Been checking these guys out for a while for a family trip up to the Carolinas. A couple of weeks ago I visited their Miami location because I wanted to physically see the vans and their space since, although I'd read about them for a bit, I'm not familiar with Spinters in real life and wanted to see one "face to face". Spoke to the clerk onsite and then asked him to show me their 12 psgr model. I sat on the drivers seat and found the seat a bit on the stiff side (stiffer than Econoline van), but relatively comfortable for our 12 hour drive. It's a big van but for the driver it seems like you're in the driver seat of a smaller vehicle. Not intimidating as I thought it would feel. Then I sat on a couple of the passenger bench seats. The bench seats had the same level of stiffness as the driver's chair, but the the seats have a headrest (unlike the Econoline van) which help on a long trip. I noticed all the amenities like the Xbox, WiFi router, TV, etc. were all there as described. But then on the front-most bench I touched the middle of the seats (Under rear AC vents) and noticed it was moist. I had read about the problems with the rear AC units leaking so I asked the clerk showing me the van about the moistness to see if he knew what the moistness was. He said: "The seats have probably just been washed and were still wet". I then said: "Are you sure this is not due to the rear AC condensation leaks on these vehicles?" And then he admitted that yes on some of the older Sprinter models like the one I was looking at, the leaks happen, but they try to minimize their occurrence by cleaning/unclogging the condensation ducts out before each rental. OK. So he lied first, but then fessed up. There's Strike 1. Not cool, but ok, I let it go and asked if I could get one of the newer vans without the leak problem during my rental period. He said they'd try to do that for me, but made no promises. Today, even though I'm aware of the risk for the leaky AC was there, I decided to go ahead and call to reserve my 5 day rental. As soon as I told them the dates I needed, I was told they couldn't take my reservation that far in advance and to call in 6 to 8 weeks to see if they can put my short 5 day rental between 2 longer period rentals, or call closer to the dates I need the vehicle for. I understand their business need to catch the big fish, but if shorter rentals were considered 2nd rate, they should spell that out on their site so customers know what to expect from their service. People make reservations in advance to not have to worry about resource availability right before they have to travel. That's Strike 2. Now my plan is to secure another rental somewhere else for now and then in 6-8 weeks give these guys another shot. Let's see if they strike out or if they wow me on the recovery and earn increased stars. read more
