It's hard to give this restaurant just 4/5 stars. For dallas it deserves 5/5 stars. Had the lobster curry, the papaya salad, the sausage, the frog legs and the chicken liver. Bambu always has great Thai dishes that are quick and affordable. This is a great spot for lunch and is always packed. This restaurant has a lot of natural light so it's always brightly lit. Service is excellent and food comes out quickly. I really enjoy their Massaman curry, pad Thai and curry with rice dishes whenever I drop by. It's not a big place and this place always seems to fill up during the lunch hour so there is sometimes a short wait. Excellent overall. read more

What exactly is Mieng Kum? And how do I safely pronounce it? Take a look beyond the printed menu at the list of specials written on the chalkboard behind the serving bar. You probably won't know what half of them are. Hell I thought I was immersed in a Rosetta Stone thai course. Fortunately the bespectacled young guy behind the bar helped us navigate this list of unknown dishes. For my money this is the jewel of Bambu's repertoire. The regular menu contains most of the typical thai offerings, and I'm not saying avoid those. We had a nicely prepared "Crying Tiger Beef", and a quality curry fried rice. I should order the pad kee mao to assess it - that's my normal measuring stick of a thai restaurant. Damn, but I can't stay away from that specials blackboard: Nam Khao Tod are Thai lettuce wraps with a tectonic taste shift that reminds me how different Thai food can be when you break out of the American standards. But in the aforementioned Mieng Kum, texture, flavor, fragrance and appearance combined in a dish that "wowed". The beautiful basil leaves were like lily pads that held crispy, salty, spicy, lime-tanged flavor packets. Little magic flavor carpets. This is apparently Thai party food, and only increases my overall fascination with hors d'oeuvres. After a few dirty glances from my girl and despite the kicks to my shins under the table, I'm going to assume the correct way to order them is "Mieng I'm about to..." oh wait never mind. Came for dinner around 6:30pm on a weeknight. Nothing too fancy. Typical Thai restaurant. Small portion. Okay food. I ordered the papaya salad. Laos style. It was okay . For $9 the portion was too small. Ordered the Crying Tiger Beef with Sticky Rice. It was plain beef with a fish sauce pepper. The pepper wasn't that great. There's a Jim Rohn quote which says "Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying basic fundamentals." After multiple visits to Bambu it's obvious to me they have the fundamentals down to a science. On each and every visit I've been impressed with the consistency of the entrées I've ordered. When it comes to some Thai restaurants, the spicy level changes like the weather. That is not the case at Bambu. The flavor and overall spice level consistently meets my expectations. My favorite entrées from here include Basil Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Ginger Beef and Chicken Basil. I highly recommend them all. The space itself, while small is very warm and inviting. It's consists of table/chairs and there is a small bar area. Weather permitting, there is an outdoor seating area. I've always had a good experience with the staff. They're very friendly and available when needed. This is true whether I dine in or if I'm picking up to-go order. My only complaint is Bambu is not on my 'beaten path' which prevents me from stopping by more frequently. This said, whenever I have a Thai craving I look forward to going a little out of my way to stop by Bambu. It is well worth it! read more

Bambu Asian Cuisine is a Thai and Asian fusion restaurant in Richardson that serves up some high quality Thai food at reasonable prices. It's an example that restaurants outside of Dallas can be very delicious. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - While Bambu Asian Cuisine resides in a shopping center, its simple, clean design doesn't detract or get in the way of the real star attraction: the food. You'll find a few Asian themed items scattered throughout (Buddha statue, etc.) It's a bit simple and doesn't try to be obnoxious. 1/2 Star. Service - Our service was good not great. We were the first patrons for a 12 PM Saturday opening, so they weren't overly busy. They were attentive but did forget a simple request for empty rice bowls. Usually not a big deal, but when there are only two tables occupied you can't forget. In the end we made due, and while I may sound picky, small requests missed like these separate good places from great ones. 1/2 Star. Food - But the food makes up for it. The grilled octopus has a great smoke flavor and the octopus is quite tender (not chewy). The pad see ew is superb. It has the perfect balance of soft noodles to vegetables/seafood tossed in a slightly sweet soy sauce. The green curry was equally good, with tender bits of chicken absorbing the flavor of the curry. Our favorite was the crab fried rice. Not too greasy nor too dry, we paired this with the curry to create our own mixed dish. In the end, we consumed everythinag. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - When I remember it exists....I admit that I often forget Bambu exists. Maybe because it's in a strip mall with very simple design. But every time I eat here I think: "Why don't I come back more often?" So, from now on Bambu is on the radar regardless of where I'm at. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. Ordered takeout from here based on the pretty good Yelp reviews. I ordered through ChowNow and my order was ready on time and accurate. The pad thai was good with balanced flavors and an appropriate quantity. I wish there was some more spice to it or if they had provided some chilli flakes on the side for me to add in. I had to take this place down a couple stars because of the disappointing beef massaman curry I ordered. The curry was super watery and the beef pieces were chewy. The carrots and potatoes were undercooked and crunchy. The curry overall had a watered down taste and no kick to it. Such a shame because after having the pad thai, I was let down by the curry. Was served complimentary egg drop soup - very light and delicate. Perhaps lightest one I ever had. And also, I think it's one of the better ones I ever had. Lovely. Decided to order out of the appetizer specials menu that's on the wall. They looked far more interesting than what is on the regular menu (standard, typical Thai that you can get anywhere else). The specials, by comparison, stands out, and have not seen many of them elsewhere. Esan Sausage ($8) - sliced, has really good smell, citrusy and even very familiar to certain Vietnamese dishes, dare I say it. Simply delicious. I was further surprised that it was recommended to eat sausage with the bits of odd accompaniments: peanuts, raw red onions, hot peppers, and pieces of lime (with skin on), and ginger. Personally the sausage is excellent on its own (one of the best sausage I've had in any restaurant), but with the accompaniments it gives it a different and unique taste that is also equally as good. Mieng Kum ($8) - dried mini shrimp with toasted coconut, peanut, lime bits, lettuce, and red onion, with a sauce. Rolled up in a large leaf (chaplu?) to be eaten. Tasted dry except for the sauce, fishy because of the dried shrimp, and sweet because of the coconut. The combination of flavors oddly works although I think it is more of an acquired taste than the sausage. Atmosphere was that of a nice, clean and comfortably modern cafe. The service was helpful, friendly and on top of things. The owner was on site to make sure everything was going well, and even checking on customers. What made me like this place even more is that virtually all of the dishes that came out seems to be done in a fresh and healthy manner - you won't find anything greasy come out of the kitchen. Couple that with the authenticity of the dish - and you have a winner (in my opinion). This is a true find. And a healthy one at that. Watch your blood pressure if you eat here. The food was completely inedible. I think they dumped the whole bottle of fish sauce on one dish. Also the flavors don't taste authentic Thai to boot. Was recommended this spot so came on a Friday night to try it out. The environment was cool. Dark setting with lounge or date night dinner vibes. Also it was clean. The food though wasn't that great. Portions are small. The crying tiger beef came with a side of sticky rice that came in a plastic sandwich bag that was crunched and distorted from the heat. Wasn't impressed with the rice. Disappointed- we have been to this Thai restaurant before and enjoyed it, but tonight was not a great experience. They were very busy, which we were glad to see. We were seated in just a few minutes, but it was very loud in the restaurant. There were 4 of us at the table and we had to lean in and shout to hear one another. Appetizers were very good (chicken satay and dumplings). I could eat those all day long. For our main courses, I ordered the Crying Tiger Steak, which was not as flavorful as usual and the meat was tough. The bigger issue was that my husband ordered the Sea Bass special ($30 on the menu- one of the most expensive dishes). 3 of the entrees came out of the kitchen at the same time. 20 min later he still did not have his meal. Patience was wearing thin- it was awkward for all at the table and the staff was not addressing the problem. Eventually the owner came over and gave a strange and awful excuse about how they filet the fish and that they were already making one when his order went in, now they were making his. 10-15 more minutes went by, the rest of us were pretty much done with our meals when they brought his dinner out. It was plated well and looked delicious, but when he tried to take a piece of the fish it wouldn't flake off. It was undercooked. We called the waitress over and asked her to take the plate away and not charge us. She was apologetic and offered something else, the owner offered to give us another entree (not for free)- even take it home. They did offer a free dessert. When they did not offer another entree for free, my husband was done and asked for the check. It took 20 more minutes for us to get the check and get out of there. We paid $90 and all my husband ate was 1 chicken satay and 2 dumplings. Not sure we will go back- every restaurant can have a bad night, but this seemed like an issue in the kitchen and the ownership did not handle the situation the way we would have expected. read more

I found this place on Leslie Brenner's list of favorite places to eat, so we went and checked it out yesterday. In addition to "normal" Thai fare, they have a creative blackboard and specials menu that offers food I've never had, prepared in unique ways. Yesterday. these included frog legs sauteed in garlic sauce, whole grilled calamari, and a whole mackerel served with raw veggies (radish, red onion, eggplant, raw ginger root), unusual fresh herbs (horse radish, kafir lime, and several others, all grown in grandma's garden) and green wraps (leaf lettuce and others) to make playful little bites with, explained as Thai party food by our server. It is a bright and interesting place to dine, filling a niche (fun, creative Thai food) otherwise devoid in the metroplex. Bambu Asian Cuisine is such a great restaurant to go to for anyone that loves fresh Thai food. I have tried some different dishes and loved them all. One of my favorites is the Pad Woon Sen. I modify mine to be made vegan friendly, so they don't include any egg in that dish. All the vegetables and perfectly cooked and the flavor of the food is incredible. Everyone I've brought to this restaurant with me has agreed with how good it is. They have a full bar which is always a plus. The staff is very friendly there and the restaurant has always been very clean when I've been there. Talked to the manager and turned out the whole brewed tea pot went bad. What we received in return? An apology and "we will not charge your Thai tea." What?!
