Finally tried Bamboo Sushi! Amazingly aesthetic interior. Definitely a higher end sushi restaurant based on interior, customer service and pricing. What stood out to me the most is 99% of everything on the menu is GLUTEN FREE, including their Tamari sauce which is amazing cause my friend has a severe gluten allergy. In terms of how the sushi taste, the platings are very aesthetic, but the taste is average to me compared to other sushi place of similar price points with the exception of their rivers and streams rolls. What stood out the most and what I recommend ordering is the Rivers and Streams Rolls, their crispy leek has a very delightful aftertaste. I would say their pricing goes into the aesthetic, accommodations, and great staff, sushi wise is above average though. read more

Recently ate dinner at this establish, on a Tuesday night with my brother as we were bike packing through Portland. We were craving something reasonably healthy after resupplying at REI across the street. We checked in with one of the three hostesses upon arrival and were told it would be about a 20 minute wait for a table. Made sense...they were busy and it looked like a couple of empty tables still need clearing. I asked for a couple of waters while we waited in the waiting area. Ten minutes elapsed and despite the the young ladies having ample time to stand around, chit-chat, and have something to drink themselves, they failed to bring us any water. So I asked one of them again and received a pretty snotty remark, "as soon as [she] get's a chance!" Strike one! After receiving the waters we waited for our table another 20 minutes or so (about 30-35 minutes in total). A third hostess seated us and to much my surprise we were offered two seats at the bar! Bar seating and table seating, especially at a sushi restaurant, are two completely different things! Strike two! Our waiter checked in with us fairly quickly upon seating... +1! My brother and I each ordered a roll and we split an appetizer...and asked for refills of our waters. Our waiter quickly return and refilled our waters. My brother and I engaged in convo regarding our route for the next day and within a short time our tempura calamari appetizer was delivered. Solid portion, well battered, and we really enjoyed the tempura mandarin orange slices included! Very tasty appetizer. As we continued enjoying it and carrying on with our convo, it didn't seem too long before his roll came out...someone other than our waiter dropped it off and quickly scurried off. So fast so, that my brother couldn't request an additional drink to go with his roll. It took several minutes before our waiter stopped talking with the other waitstaff and for him to come over and check in on us. My brother ordered his drink, received it, and had finished his roll long before I ever received my roll. Probably a good 20 minutes between him receiving his roll and me receiving mine! Strike 3 and 4! And once again my roll was delivered by someone else and it took me another 5-10 minute to get our waiter's attention once again to place my drink order. And then I see it sitting at the bar in front of my waiter who just stood there chit-chatting and drinking with the other waitstaff. I literally had to point at my drink at the bar and then him for him to snap out of his daze and bring me the damn drink! Strike 5! The calamari was pretty good! The rolls were good, but small and honestly overpriced for quality and quantity. Service was abysmal! The only people that seemed to have any hustle in them may have been the sushi "chefs"... no one else. Whomever is the owner of this place, needs to fire the manager/assistant manager and then train the waitstaff appropriately. I'd probably fire the entire waitstaff and clean house. Worst service I've experience in quite a few years! Won't be back...ever. I'd recommend avoiding the place. read more

Ordered: Unicorn roll Crispy rice citrus salmon Scallop nigiri Seaweed salad Miso soup Edamame Unicorn and scallop nigiri were my fav! Very fresh and well balanced. Crispy rice was unique and pretty good, but I didn't realize the salmon would be grounded up. Seaweed salad could've used more seasoning/dressing. Miso soup and edamame were fine, but expensive for what it is. Especially the miso soup! $7.50 and doesn't taste anything special. Came here on a Sunday night for dinner and sat at the bar. Ordered the Chef's Choice 12-pc Sashimi and the Friday the 13th signature roll. I enjoyed mostly all of the sashimi cuts - I got salmon, hamachi, albacore tuna, and another tuna (I forget exactly). Except the hamachi, which usually is my #1 favorite sashimi ever, wasn't what I expected. It felt a bit more slimy than all the others and the mouthfeel was off. I hope this isn't what their hamachi is like all the time. I liked the roll as well though I which there was more texture, it was pretty mushy with no crunch. Service was pretty fast even though it was a full house. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd come in to try some of their other rolls. read more

This is the worst table in the place. Everyone walks by this table when they are seated, the servers regularly walk by it, and everyone that uses the bathroom has to walk by it. The sizzle hamachi is flavorless and in need of acid, tempura was raw inside (veggies and batter), and not the light, airy texture I was looking for. Rolls were okay, but again that tempura inside...Crispy rice, it's crispy, but nothing flavor-wise. The honest best thing here was the green tea. Felt like I was in Japan, that Matcha. Service is also, just okay. Felt like sometimes it was one of those, you should be grateful to be here kinda things. Asked if we were done super quick, and maybe I don't blame them as maybe they could sense the unhappiness. I have to say, unfortunately, I would not try this place again. I walked around the complex and came back and sat by the pick up area. Where they put and pack the items when it's ready. A couple of customers with pick up orders came and went. Thirty minutes later. I was still waiting. The kitchen staff seemed busy with enough customer traffic. The man who took my order kept himself looking busy. The icing on the cake was when one of the other staff members started match making the guy (who took my order) and a female staff member. You're in a restaurant working and we can all honestly hear your banter. When my order was handed to me I asked if there was wasabi, soy sauce and chopsticks? I was told "there should be!" Housemade miso was perfect, they used the highest quality pickled ginger, and they do a spicy tuna roll CORRECTLY (no avocado, no spicy mayo, balanced flavors and textures. The staff was sweet and accommodating and attentive. Shout out to Daniella who took care of us. Prices were good for the quality of the food ($11 for a 8 piece standard spicy tuna roll). I called to make a reservation for a party of 10 for a post-rehearsal/pre-wedding dinner over three weeks in advance and was told that they can't do a 6:45p or 7pm reservation because they "prefer to book large parties earlier or later so they can accommodate other parties." Not that they HAVE reservations for before mine, just that they want to leave it open IN CASE someone else wants to book. On any other night, I'm totally flexible with reservation times. But because this particular occasion has time restrictions (a rehearsal beforehand, an early morning wake-up for most of the party afterwards), it wasn't feasible for me to book earlier or later, and I apologetically told them so. The host checked with the GM, who confirmed that they wouldn't take my 7pm reservation and the "very earliest" they'd do was 7:30pm. So I ended up booking my dinner elsewhere because it's for mid-October, and restaurants in PDX slow down drastically in the fall, and the other restaurant was happy to have my business. On one hand, I get it. I really do. I've been working in restaurants for over two decades now. It's absolutely ideal to try to stagger reservations so you can get at least two turns on your only big-top table. But that's the IDEAL. It's not always possible to "maximize your table turns" because the real world is full of variables. Guests show up late. They cancel at the last minute. They book a res for 10 and show up with half that many. Or they do show up, but only half the party is ordering food. That's the biz, baby. And at the end of the day, you're telling a guest who wants to celebrate a special occasion at your restaurant that the POTENTIAL to make more money off that table is more important than her occasion--and that's such a tacky look. And it's also a poor financial decision in the long run. Because EVEN IF they're so thoroughly booked in mid-Oct that they can turn down my reservation with full confidence that they'll definitely get two solid turns out of that table and make a few extra hundred dollars that night, what they've actually done is make me never want to dine there again because I feel like they don't care at all about me as a customer--my special occasion is just an inadequate dollar sign to them. They had enough goodwill from me that I was going to treat my entire wedding party to a dinner there, and now that goodwill is gone. So not only have they lost out on however much money we were going to spend on our rehearsal dinner, but they've also lost my future business, and now I'm ALSO irritated enough to be telling other people in the industry and everyone on yelp about it. Anyway, best of luck to them weathering the next few years when business continues to slow down--it's restaurant teams who invest in their guests and make them feel valued who will survive. read more

I had high expectations based on the reviews, but surprisingly I was not a huge fan based on what we ordered. First of all, if you are open to trying a modern take on Japanese American food than this is definitely worth the try. But if you're looking for authentic Japanese cuisine, might want to skip this place. We ordered the Veggie Tempura as an appetizer and the large cut sizes of veggies ended up being hard and undercooked, plus the tempura batter was not crispy at all. The Green Machine roll w/Salmon was one that I was looking forward to, but the cilantro chili oil was a bit too sweet that overpowered the sushi itself. I wish I could taste more of the fish and seasoned rice. We took Agedashi tofu ($11) and Karaage ($12) appetizers to go and sadly it was not worth the price for the small portions as you can see in my images. I understand their sustainable mission behind their food, which I do commend them for, but in my opinion, I could not justify it with this subpar experience. Long waits must be associated with this place. We ordered take out and it said 50 minutes. Total wait time was 1h 20min. My gripe was I was takeout order #127 and many orders above mine were getting completed. Most with large bags. An order #142 got their bag before me. I only had 4 items. I feel like they need to optimize their system because that's ridiculous. Also all the worker were all so stoned face and little checkup. Not friendly vibes. Regarding food, the salmon nigiri with yuzu was pretty bitter. Could just be my palette but didn't really enjoy it and the salmon was kinda tough and small. The crispy tofus were okay but nothing too special. The crispy rice with salmon and green machine were pretty good and only reason this wasn't a one star. Probably won't be coming back. read more

This is the third time I've tried to get my family in to this location. I get it. We have a larger family (6 kiddos). Every time there has been more than enough room and space. I also get there might be reservations...but two of the three times has been a flat out "no we can't seat you." Not a "this is how long you'd have to wait." Just a no. Then once we were done, we waited 15 more mins to finally get their check. The restaurant was hot with no air conditioning on. (May not have been their fault)? All I know is that two days prior I had eaten at the Lake Oswego bamboo and had an excellent visit with amazing food and service and was hoping to share that same experience at Cedar Hills, but was incredibly disappointed. Came here for the first time with a small group on a sunny Wednesday night for a midweek get together. The doors were open, the sun was shining, and the restaurant was bustling. Luckily we had a reservation so we were seated right away. Service is friendly and efficient and I'm honestly loving the handheld POS system that makes paying individually so much easier. Drinks were so pretty and the food came quickly and everything tasted delicious! There was a great variety of appetizers and specialty rolls to choose from and lots of options for everyone and great for sharing too. I highly recommend the cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and the spicy edamame did come with a kick. The miso Caesar salad looked refreshing as well. No pictured but the Green Machine roll had the most flavorful sauce that also paired nicely with the huge vegetable tempura. The rolls were on the pricier side but I feel the quality, presentation, and restaurant vibe can justify treating yourself. If I had to describe Bamboo Sushi in three words, I would have to say: classy, quality, spendy. We ate here for lunch the other day, and the ambience and style can't be beat! Highly recommend for the vibe. The food itself was also very good (highly recommend the Green Monster, this one surprised me but was very good). All this being said, this is just an expensive spot. If you know what you're getting when you go, that makes it a bit better, but don't be taken off guard. Most main items fall in the $15-20 per, and as with any sushi, just one thing probably isn't enough to be full. Overall though, great spot for a nice night out! read more
