It's been over a year now. Every month, we order. Anytime we have extra money, we order. We have NEVER had ONE item that wasn't delicious. No greasy hands, no huge blobs of fat on the ribs, no sodium overload. And!?!?!?! We FINALLY ordered what I consider the litmus test for Chinese food: Hot and Sour soup. Wow! Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): Bamboo House is a great delightful experience if you were looking for Hunan or Szechuan cuisine. Located between Electric Boat Shipyard and the Pfizer main entrance, the restaurant doesn't look like much located in a small strip mall. They recently reopened after taking a short break during the COVID-19 shutdown. They have resumed takeout and delivery operations. What can't be beat about bamboo house is the prices for the amount of food that you get. Most everything we ordered was very flavorful. I'll be honest the Jonathan J's photo of the "wonton in hot oil" is what made me try it out. It was more like thick wrapper, frozen dumplings topped with General Tso's sauce. I wasn't what we expected and won't order again. The hot and sour soup was lacking in flavor as well. They have a variety of meat and vegetable dishes though nothing on the menu is clearly labeled as being vegetarian or vegan, you can always call and ask if you have questions. There are no Vegan meat substitutes such as seitan or tempeh, but they do have tofu. In light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, they have developed a new ordering system with their website. The website makes it incredibly easy to order and was developed very well. Their menu includes many classic dishes, Chef specialties, lunch specials that are perfectly sized and very affordable, and Seafood. If you're ordering takeout, right now they have set up a table between their two door vestibule that allows you to select soy sauce, sauce, hot sauce, and hot mustard. Just go to the window tell them your name and they will bring out your order to a table set up by the door, very quick and easy! I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. Enjoyable Chinese take-out with speedy and outstanding service, and a quick and easy online ordering system. If the Wontons and soup was better it could be 4 stars. This is a traditional Chinese take out that has been serving the Groton area for over 15 years (same management), which speaks for its quality itself. Nothing is fancy here, but done perfectly with the most reasonable price in the area. Delivery is always done promptly. Very disappointed in this place I've heard good things they did have Good service the girl at the desk was very nice. They gave me the wrong food. I asked for a side of vegetable lo mein they gave me shrimp lo mein and when they went to change and it and give me a new batch I get home just to open my vegetable lo mein with shrimp at the top I know most people wouldn't mind but I don't eat seafood this grosses me out. And clearly they just picked the shrimp out of the lo mein they were going to give me. My General Tso's Chicken (I know, it's not Chinese!) was some of the best I've ever had: crispy outside, tender and flavorful inside. Picked up dinner tonight: Vegetable fried rice and buffalo wings. Buffalo wings were bad. Soft wings, discolored (yellow) meat under the skin, and felt sick afterwards. Drank some off-flavored lukewarm water from their hot water dispenser (for tea) while I waited. Vegetable fried rice was good! Yellow rice, not too oily, good mix of vegetables mixed in. "Very loud" noise level refers to the insanely loud door buzzer that goes off every time someone walks in or out. This is not a place for ambiance, but the door buzzer puts the cherry on the whole mediocre dining experience. read more

I miss this place! I moved from Groton 5 years ago but when I visited again this past winter, I had to go and get me some General tso's chicken which is damn good (the best Ive had to date) and the crab rangoon is to die for (make sure you get the dip thats supposed to go with the rangoon, its so good with it.) They actually have crab meat in their crab rangoon lol. They have pretty good spring rolls too. I hope I get to go back again someday. Lunch in Groton... What to have? Today it was Chinese. I've been going to Bamboo House for years. When I want a quick lunch for under six dollars this is my go to place. Now I've tried many of the items on the menu but I really enjoy the Kung Pao Chicken. I wish there was a place close to my home that made it the same way as Bamboo House but there isn't. Still, today I went with General Tso's Chicken. Wish I ordered Kung Pao Chicken. The General let me down today. I found the chicken pieces to be difficult to eat because they where way over cooked and tuff. The sauce was think and overly sweet. I felt like the chicken was candied in the sauce. I liked the rice and egg roll. The Place: Bamboo House is a small mostly take out place. They have about six tables inside if you wish to dine there. Order at the counter and your meal will be quickly served to you, nice and hot. The place could use a renovation, not much to look at and it could use a good cleaning but its not dirty in a scary way that would keep you from coming back. I like the family that runs the place. Their kids are super cute and everyone is alway friendly. Overall: great place for a good inexpensive meal. Not the greatest Chinese food in town but where else can you get a good sized entree, rice and soup for under six dollars? You can at the Bamboo House. Tip: if you're ordering take out be sure you ask for soup, otherwise they won't include it but charge you the full price. It's happened to me several times. Finally!! I've found a decent Chinese restaurant in Groton! Tried them all and this place beats them by a mile. I was ordering enough food for two days so I ordered two combination plates that contained two sides and pork fried rice (I substituted one with shrimp lo-mein). I ordered gen tso's (as per everyone's recommendation), coconut chicken, buffalo wings (I know, I know, lol) and crab Rangoon. My fav is the Rangoon. Has to be the best I've ever had!! Very creamy and fried to perfection. I've never ordered the coconut chicken before and must say- it was amazing!! Both the coconut and gen tso's chicken were very crispy (which I wouldn't have expected from delivery). The surprise was that the wings were really fantastic!! Even though they were smothered in buffalo sauce- they still managed to stay crunchy and flavorful! The rice and lo-mein were good as well but nothing really stood out, I suppose. Still above average though. Currently about to drift into a food coma so I figured I'd write my review while it's still fresh in my head. Will absolutely be back soon! read more

i think i was too nice the first time i reviewed this place. things that pissed me off, the second time around: i ordered by phone. the guy, speaking nearly indecipherably, misinterpreted my order for Plain Rice as plain fried rice (WTF??) and didn't ask if i wanted any soup or (additional thing that comes with the lunch combo). hung up as quickly as humanly possible. i go to pick up my order and see that "plain fried rice" is written on the outside of it. um, sir, plain rice. he gets Really Fucking Pissed. "you wanted plain fried rice! that's what you told me!" (no, i didn't) "you order it and that's what you get!" (no, i ordered plain white rice, steamed.) "you should have told me steamed!" then he walked off in a huff, and said, "give me a couple minutes," yelled at his cooks, and had someone shove me my lunch. i suppose, at $5, i shouldn't expect much. a broken fortune cookie. more rice than actual entree. passable-quality american chinese food. but the attitude? seriously? this place is parked right outside of pfizer and down the street from electric boat. don't tell me you don't get any business so you can't do a mistaken order right. read more

The best Chinese food I've found in Groton. The Kung Pao chicken is especially good, and the fried rice and chow mei fun are above average. Wouldn't recommend anything involving fried shrimp - they over-bread it terribly. Delivery has always been reasonably fast and the drivers are friendly. My favorite Chinese food place around here. My delivery is always exceptionally fast. Out of the likely 30 times I've gotten delivery from here I've only had one bad experience, likely due to ordering later than usual and getting the "end of the day" stuff. The Buffalo chicken wings aren't the highest quality wing, and if left in the container they get far too soaked in sauce, but they're decent and cheap. Every other food I've tried from there has been decent, with most of it being good or very good. Their Lobster Lo-Mein is my standby. Easily the best menu item I've had from any chinese food place between Westerly and Waterford. The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars (yet) is because the dining area is a bit sketchy. I've never sat and ate there because of that, but I've picked up my order a few times on the way home. read more

This is going to be my go to Chinese food joint from now on! The staff was friendly when we first walked in, they gave my two year old fortune cookies to munch on. The food was amazing! I had deliciously crispy General Tso's chicken and fried rice, it was a good deal for a combo plate. My husband had Sweet and Sour chicken, also very good! We also did side orders of crab rangoons and egg rolls. The rangoons were friend to perfection, delicious! I tried to order via website, but was unable to pay by card. It took 7 minutes to place an order of just a few items by telephone because the lady who answered couldn't understand my address. I was very careful to state on several occasions that the dishes should be cooked without pineapple (as my wife is allergic to it). I was advised the food would be delivered in 30-40 minutes. An hour later, my food arrived with pineapple! The receipt even said 'no pineapple' in two places!! I called the restaurant and advised them of the mistake and they said they would send out a replacement dish, although it would be 45 minutes. An hour and a half later the replacement dish arrived. Their menu said no MSG but there had to have been some or something close because I was very sick, head ache couldn't see.
