I have been doing CrossFit for about 10 years, I've been to many gyms and they are not all alike. Ballston CF is a top tier CrossFit gym for many reasons: 1. the equipment is excellent and kept in very good condition. They have over a dozen platforms for weightlifting - which is awesome. 2. Solid programming and coaches who keep the classes moving while making sure everyone keeps up/uses good form (shoutout to the 630 coaches, Madison/Bobby/Justin, you're the best!) 3. The community is strong (physically and as a great group of friends). They host happy hours, holiday parties, sporting events, ladies/guys night, 5ks and the list goes on. 4. They offer a variety of classes: CF, Hyrox/endurance, gymnastics, yoga, theres something for everyone. I'd highly recommend giving them a try if you're on the fence. Easiest way to make friends as a grown up! read more

I had never done CrossFit when I started but BCF is very helpful to beginners!! Coaches are all great!!!

Had such a great and super fun workout!! The facility is great (including the AC!) The equipment is well kept and the staff is attentive, energetic, and gives great cues!! As a 6 year CrossFitter and frequent Drop-in while traveling elsewhere, my standards are high. Definitely worth a Drop in if you're in the DMV area! They've got everything you need, and you can expect a great sweat and a full body workout with friendly and welcoming classmates Thanks again!! They also honor all of their 5 and 10 year members- SO COOL!! read more

I have never experienced a fitness community like the one at Ballston Crossfit; from the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted with an infectious energy. The coaches and fellow gym-goers are incredibly helpful, friendly, and supportive, elevating the entire experience. Before signing up, I was intimidated by the idea of starting a workout routine. Walking has been my go-to exercise for nearly thirty years and it was seriously past time I up my game. The coaches at Ballston CrossFit quickly put me at ease, and I have found that the workouts are designed for various levels of ability, ensuring that I could progress at my own pace while still pushing myself to new limits. The workouts themselves are transformative. Each session is carefully crafted to challenge every muscle in your body, combining elements of strength training, cardio, and agility exercises. And what's incredible is that no matter your age or fitness level, you can participate and see results. After only 8 classes I've rediscovered my abs which is a major feat all in itself. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a newcomer like myself, you'll find yourself surrounded by people who genuinely care about the collective with no judgement. Also, they play music that motivates. Come and join us. You won't regret it. read more

Recently moved to the Virginia Arlington area and join Ballston Crossfit. thanks to Bobby, It was a no-brainer. The community is fun and energetic and very inviting. The workouts are intense and fun but with the great coaching, it makes it far easier. I typically do Bobby's classes, but I've been lucky to jump into a few other trainers classes, all of which are top-notch. read more

I've had a great experience here. super staff, great equipment and facility and they concentrate on what's important - getting form etc down right and making sure the program works for you. And the other Crossfit students are fun and supportive. read more

Ballston Crossfit is a well-oiled machine with quality/knowledgeable coaching and intentional programming. What sold me on going to Ballston when I first moved to Northern VA in 2014 was the commitment that Tucker has to hiring and developing strong coaches who are dedicated to ensuring that their members are moving with correct technique and improving continuously. No matter your entry ability level/knowledge of lifting and CrossFit, the coaches will meet you where you're at, while pushing you to improve. The coaching staff is both approachable/fun to be around and knowledgeable of olympic lifting/Crossfit. They are eager to work with both new-to-Crossfit and competitive athletes to help them meet their goals. So many people that don't do Crossfit have told me it's "dangerous" or "unsafe." I always mention to them that it comes down to the learning correct technique and taking care of your body. For the 5+ years that I spent at Ballston Crossfit, they were always focused on the long-term/life-long fitness of their members by doing things right. Thank you Ballston Crossfit! read more

An incredible gym that changed my life -- feel free to check out my success story here: https://ballstoncrossfit.com/amy-schramm/ You won't regret joining this community of athletes - even after moving away from DC, I've always compared other gyms to BCF. The coaches really care about their athletes and make sure you have a great (and safe) time while getting the best workout of your life. Every move can be modified and the coaches keep you honest about good form. Thanks to Tucker and the whole team! read more

Great coaches, great community. Will get you in great shape and you'll have fun doing it.

I have been a member at Ballston Crossfit for five years. I have nothing but the best things to say about BCF and their entire staff. The community at this gym is welcoming, fun, and a place where you'll be sure to make life long friends and get crazy strong along the way! The coaches and entire staff are incredibly knowledgeable and detail oriented in all aspects of their coaching. This is clear in the well planned and executed programming to the attention each and every member gets on improving technique and form during WODs. I began Crossfit here in my early 20's coming from a workout regimen of 100% cardio. After five years of consistent strength training I am stronger than I've ever been, have the body composition I always hoped for pre-CrossFit, and have a better relationship with food and fitness than I ever thought possible. Give BCF a shot and it will be one of the best decisions you make for your health and wellness and overall quality of life. read more

Love how they turn 5's into 10's. Best coaches in the dc area...Tucker is an amazing coach and guy! Real results, always clean and well resourced, and they are active in the community to boot read more

Absolutely LOVE Ballston Crossfit. It had been about 4 years since I did any sort of crossfit workout, but after my first class I immediately questioned why I ever stopped. The coaches are incredibly personable, supportive, and always looking for ways to help you reach your goals, which is largely a testament to Coach (and Owner) Tucker's ability to hire the best of the best. The facility is great with very well kept equipment. The workouts produce great results regardless of what stage you are in your fitness journey. There are constant social events planned (fitness and non-fitness related) to help build the community and create friendships. There are tons of class times times offered every day. I can't say enough good things. Highly recommend!! read more

I've been doing crossfit for over 8 years and moved to the DMV area from Florida about 3 years ago. For experienced Crossfitters everyone knows that each box is different. Some boxes are better than others and the skillset/level of coaching can be subpar. I can without a doubt say this is the best crossfit box in the DMV area. The coaching staff are the most enthusiastic and well versed crossfit coaches I have come across and the box is outstanding. Highly recommend this box to all of those who are looking for a new crossfit home or who are just starting their crossfit journey read more

I have to say, I've been hesitant to start CrossFit training for some time. I have a chronic knee issue that tends to be aggravated by running and jumping. And I tend to be more interested in overall fitness than muscle mass. However, I was mistaken to wait. Tucker and the rest of the crew are incredibly safety and health conscious. By making sure I started out slow, really learned proper technique, and always stayed within my abilities, I've actually been able to strengthen my knee so that it is far less of a problem than it was before! And the various mobility seminars and yoga classes have helped me improve not just strength and cardio, but mobility and flexibility as well! Overall, I'm very impressed with CrossFit. But even more, I'm impressed with Tucker and the Ballston Crossfit coaches for making it an effective, safe, and fun experience, for new comers and experienced athletes alike. read more

CrossFit is great but this gym sucks. Here are its unique problems: - You need to sign up for classes in advance. - No Sunday classes. - Class times seem to change every few weeks. - You can't drop the weights, except on Saturdays. Trying to set heavy barbells down gently is dangerous. - Careless programming. Metcons typically last 15-30 minutes, never less. Day-to-day programming is completely random (unlike CrossFit's main-site). So workouts with 135 reps of pressing (real example) or 80 ring dips (real example) are followed by more pressing the next day. - The owner is frequently on vacation--figuratively if not always literally. Members new to CrossFit may not know any better, but it doesn't have to be like this! read more

Bottom line: BCF is awesome. From the coaches to the facilities to the members, I couldn't have asked for a better experience being new to the CrossFit world. Sadly, I am moving to Boston and have to leave BCF behind. While I have liked BCF from day one, I don't think I knew how great BCF was until I started researching and visiting other CrossFit boxes in Boston (and others while traveling). Here's what BCF has to offer: Staff: Tucker, the owner, is the best. From the very first day that I went to a free class when BCF first opened, his goal was focused on teaching and explaining CrossFit in general, as well as every specific move and the reason behind it. No regular gym can provide this kind of instruction in such a fun environment and not everyone is a natural teacher, but Tucker and his staff definitely are dedicated to teaching. Facilities: The location is perfect; walking distance from the Ballston metro, and convenient for those of us who live and/or work in Ballston. Additionally, there is plenty of free on-street parking within a few blocks. The box itself is incredibly clean and the equipment is always put away in the correct location so the next group can find exactly what they are looking for. There are bathrooms and showers if you need them for changing and plenty of space to stretch and socialize with other members before and after workouts. We also have access to the trails to do some running for warm-ups or in the WODs. Members: The demographic of Ballston is primarily young professionals and the atomosphere of BCF naturally resembles this demographic, which makes it a great place to meet friends, especially if you are new to the area. You will quickly be introduced to the other members, who make it a point to get to know you and who are always friendly. This is also the most supportive environment I've been in. While having run several marathons before joining BCF, I thought the running community was the most supportive. However, I quickly learned that WODs at BCF are even better - no one cares if you scale a lot or if you are impressing people by Rx-ing; BCFs top athletes are always supportive and encouraging to all members. Classes: Daily WODs are the best. They are always posted on the website and Facebook the night before, so you know what you are in for the next day (or you can choose not to look!). Tucker plans to add additional classes as the gym membership grows, but right now classes range from 5-15 people usually. It's small enough that you get individualized coaching/training, but large enough to keep you motivated through tough WODs. And you don't have to sign up for classes in advance - just show up whenever it fits in your schedule for the day so there are no excuses for not making it (and trust me, you will want to go because it's fun!). Also, free yoga on Sunday mornings! Extras: Tucker is always arranging outside programming and clinics that take place at the gym. These include running seminars, mobility workshops, skills seminars, etc., and he is open to including other activites if there is enough interest from the members. Oh, and how could I forget the happy hours and BBQs that members host at their houses. Like I said before, the members are great and it's a very social environment where you can also get in a great workout in 60 minutes. I'll definitely miss this place when I move to Boston and can only hope that I find a box that is equally as good as BCF. read more

I tried several CrossFit boxes in the greater DC area and I can confidently say that BCF is the best. When I moved from Seattle, I left behind the box where I started CrossFit. I figured every location would be the same. While each of the other locations I tried around DC had some parts of what I love about CrossFit, none of them felt right. I was looking for a great workout, with active coaches who get to know you and other CrossFitters who are there with a smile on their face because they know they are there to have fun and get a great workout. I found all that at Ballston CrossFit. BCF felt right because they focus on individuals. I am not the best athlete (which I'm reminded of every time I do something athletic) and at BCF that is OK. Tucker and the coaches go out of their way to ensure you are doing the movements with correct form. They even encourage you to use less weight in order to ensure the proper form. The other athletes who are there are willing to help you get better and they push you to do so. I wouldn't say it is a competitive environment, but you still want to compete at BCF. As a less than stellar athlete, one unique aspect I appreciate at BCF is there are two versions of most workouts. One for hardcore athletes and one for people more like me. The space itself is awesome because it is huge! Many boxes are tiny and you're stacked on top of the other athletes. BCF has plenty of space. I also give Tucker props for the lifting platform he built. I travel and try to do WODs on the road. I've never seen anything like the lifting area at BCF. If you do CrossFit for the workout, go to BCF. If you do CrossFit for the coaches, go to BCF. If you do CrossFit to meet fun people, go to BCF. Bottom line, go to Ballston CrossFit. read more

Tucker and his team are awesome. I went to a trial class at a different Crossfit in Arliington, and this gym is far superior. -The classes are exciting, fun, and challenging. You hear cheering and applause for peoples successes, which is very encouraging. -You get personalized and friendly training every single class to help you with form and motivation. -The workouts are constantly varied and high-intensity. I've tried P90x and Crossfit left me sorer, which is a good thing. - Based on how fit the 3-6 month members look, you can clearly achieve great results exercising at Ballston Crossfit. The members look like they've been chopping wood or digging ditches all summer. And that's exactly what I was hoping for. I want to feel and look like I am fit enough to move furniture, not fit enough to sit on the beach in a bikini. - They play a good mix of dance and rock - not all metal and heavy testosterone music. It's an environment that makes girls feel comfortable and welcome. -There is a wide variety of brand new members...heavy and old to fit and young. If you're not already in good shape, you won't be alone. But, hopefully you'll get into shape if you stick with it! The long-time members look awesome. I'm really excited about this gym and will update this review in a few months! read more

There are a lot of articles/rumors circulating about the evils of Crossfit, how it supposedly causes injuries and lacks results... Well, let the haters hate because the truth is just the opposite. I played sports for many years, and I've found that crossfit is a great way to get my daily dose of competition - plus, the workouts are hard but also vary enough from day to day that it's tough to get bored. The coaches at BCF have been awesome with helping me tailor my workouts around, and helping to rehabilitate, a pretty severe back injury (the cause of which had nothing to do with crossfit). Moral of the story: don't knock it 'til you try it! read more

Let me state this as simply as possible: Ballston CrossFit will change your life! I started going in March when I was pushing 250lbs. Within three months, I had lost 30 pounds and had gotten my blood pressure under control for the first time in years. In addition, the results were so successful, that my doctor was able to take me off of my blood pressure and cholesterol medications (which I have been able to keep off). Tucker, Mark, and the rest of the crew are simply fantastic coaches. (Though that doesn't even begin to do it justice.) While each workout is hard, they never fail to keep you motivated to keep pushing yourself. Each day is an opportunity to get stronger, faster, and fitter. Probably the best thing about BCF is how well it epitomizes the best aspects of CrossFit generally. It has been said that CrossFit is the only sport where the last one to finish gets the loudest applause. That is certainly the case at BCF. Everyone works together as a community to push each other from day one and nobody is ever made to feel out of place, regardless of their current physical conditioning. Whether you are coming in with serious, life-threatening health problems (as was I) or whether you are coming in with years of fitness under your belt, BCF will take you farther than you ever thought possible. I can honestly say that I am better as a person due to BCF and its amazing staff. read more

If you're new to the DC Area - as I still am - and are looking for a new CrossFit box, be sure to head over to Ballston CrossFit to try out a free class. In just a short period of time I have been thoroughly impressed, not just by the facility and available equipment (which is all solid), but more so by the quality instruction provided by the coaching staff. The owner (Tucker) has been a tremendous help as I look to get back into a new CrossFit cycle. It is clear that he - as well as many of the coaches I have interacted with - has an extensive knowledge in CrossFit movements, Olympic lifting, mobility, and more. What is most impressive in my book is his willingness to address your questions or concerns without hesitation. This morning, in the middle of his own strength set, he was able to provide me a number of new mobility exercises to help improve my positioning for squats. That goes a long way with me, and I'm sure it does with the rest of his athletes as well. From the moment you step into a class at Ballston CrossFit you can be assured that the coaches are there to make you a better CrossFitter by constantly reviewing your form and providing feedback as to what you could be doing better. I've been to a number of CrossFit boxes, and that is something that is not always a given. Do yourself a favor and head over to Ballston CrossFit if you're new to the area or if you have always had an itch to get started with CrossFit and keep finding ways to put it off. read more

Two years ago, I decided to try out Crossfit. At the time, I didn't realize that this would be a life changing decision. My girlfriend and I choose this gym over the Crossfit gym located 0.25 mi from our home at the time because their foundations class schedule fit into our schedules. We were so impressed with Tucker (the owner) and James (coach), that we decided to join after our foundations class completed. They were both very enthusiastic, gave great instructions, incredibly positive, and were not salesmen like at all. 1.5 years later, we moved 35 minutes south and decided to change to a close gym simply due to the distance and time it took thanks to DC metro area traffic. I personally tried out five other gyms and I can honestly say that in my opinion, Ballston CrossFit is the top crossfit gym in NOVA. Here are my top supporting reasons. 1. All of the coaches are very passionate about coaching. You can easily tell that it is more than just a job to them. 2. They strongly focus on technique. If you perform a movement incorrectly, they will notice and help you to correct it. 3. The environment is very positive and friendly. This gym has a very strong community presence. 4. Tucker is constantly reinvesting in the gym. There is always new equipment and the gym is very well maintained. 5. They utilize the HVAC. You may think no big deal, but some gyms in my experience are in the low 50s in the winter and I'm told they approach 100 in the summer. There is no way I would ever workout in a 100 degree gym! I did work out in one that was 50s and my hands were in pain. 6. Ballston Crossfit offers discounted rates for longer membership commitments 7. They have multiple programs in addition to the standard crossfit classes (skills class, barbell club, yoga for crossfit) 8. Seminars (nutrition, mobility, pain relief, etc...) 9. Coach Jake (enough said)... Overall, I love this place and I wish the commute wasn't an issue. read more

I've been coming to ballston CrossFit for over two years now. Consistently the best programming and coaching in the DC area. one thing that is sometimes over looked too is that the equipment is always repaired/upgraded when it needs to be. You can be confident that you're working out in a place that actually cares for its members. It's a great place to get fit and make friends too With consistent get togethers with the crew. read more

After having been a member of mass-membership gyms and paying to work with personal trainers, I tried CrossFit at BCF and I'm hooked. One Year in and I'm 25 lbs lighter, while increasing my lean mass to fat mass ratio; more knowledgeable about nutrition; have better mobility/range of motion. BCF has a great team of trainers with a holistic approach to wellness/fitness. They go beyond just getting CrossFit Level One certifications. I've heard CrossFit horror stories, but BCF is both a GREAT CrossFit Ambassador and example of how a CrossFit box should be. read more

I first reviewed BCF when I joined back in Sept 2012 and now it's May 2013. I really REALLY think highly of both the coaching staff as well as the community that the staff has helped to create. I know it's not the cheapest fitness option out there, but it has totally busted through my fitness plateau and I'm seeing gains on a regular basis. I'm a total convert. :) read more

This location is great. I've found that, with Crossfit, you have to research the gyms beforehand to see how the coaches are. This alone will determine whether or not you will have a good experience. The coaches here are fantastic. Even though the work outs are in a group, they make sure to ensure each individual is doing the technique properly/scaled appropriately. I started Crossfit almost a year ago with a pre-existing shoulder injury and knee problems. I haven't injured myself once, but HAVE had significant improvement with my shoulder. Zero knee pain. Bonus-I've made friends. This was nice since I was new to the state when joining. Two of my closest friends got me to try CrossFit after years of thinking that that type of workout would be way too intense for me. I took Foundations in September of 2015 and have been so excited and grateful for the progress I've seen since joining. I am almost 40 and though I am still always the last to finish the workouts and don't even Fx most of the time, I'm in the best shape of my life and it feels pretty awesome. I've also been so encouraged by the BCF members... since I'm usually last to finish I've often got some of the strongest cheering me on at the end :) It honestly gets me choked up sometimes LOL. The coaching is really incredible. Each of the coaches have different strengths, but they take so much care that their athletes are doing the movements well and safely. I always feel like our coaches want to help each of us become braver to try new things and to push ourselves in safe and effective ways. I appreciate the coaches' focus on technique and the personal help and attention they give their members as they're able. read more

Walking into the box you won't be blown away by the size (though there is plenty of room for all size classes), but the coaching staff is excellent. They'll always make sure to push you to new limits. They're knowledgable, respectful, and there to coach you through the best workouts you'll have. The owner is a great guy who makes himself available to hear your concerns and help you reach your goals. He'll know you on a first name basis. I would recommend this box to anyone. The CrossFit community is very strong/encouraging in general and this box definitely exemplifies that. Try a free class, I did and I was hooked. read more

I went in for their free class on Saturday and decided I would give this gym a shot. I've always worked with a personal trainers and had memberships at different gyms and just kind of got bored with it. After a few classes I was hooked! The group environment is so energizing and all the members are awesome. The coaches are AMAZING and pay attention to detail. People say "you shouldn't do crossfit because 'if' you're not doing the right technique you'll end up hurting yourself". That's why this gym is the best! The coaches are there to help you perfect your technique. Awesome gym hands down. Side note: Does your gym donate to charity for every check-in? Ballston CrossFit does! read more

I came to BCF after a couple of years at another Crossfit in California and have seen tremendous improvements over my first two months. Tucker was really helpful in my first session with him - my "test out" was a lot more like a personal training session focused on how Tucker and his coaches could help me improve. They're really focused on technique and making sure that I'm doing things the right way vs. just moving as much weight as possible. Coaches have taken the extra time to point out where (and how!) I need to mobilize and it's made all the difference. I'm now easily moving weights that were a challenge for me before. Skill work is also another focus that has helped me. I'm not "afraid" to do double unders in a WOD anymore, and the coaches have me stringing them together in just two months (something I couldn't do for almost two years of trying before). I can't wait to see what I am able to do next! All in all, a great box that's friendly, welcoming, and most importantly will get you the coaching and attention you need to get moving the right way! read more

I started as a member of the foundation class, I can say that these guys know their stuff, and they care about good training. Crossfit is a sport, not exercise, and it is classified as high risk of injury (just google). If you're above the standard 28-34 demographics just watch it. You need folks like these to guide you. As a member of the regular class, 2-3x/week, I find the classes intense and yet paced to the unique needs and readiness level of the participants. You could be training alongside a super fit person and still be able to adjust to your needs. As long as you don't compete with anyone but yourself you will find this an incredibly rewarding box to be part of. read more
