After a less than stellar experience at a different plant shop in the area, I stopped by Ballantyne Gardens on a whim and WOW... what a different experience. Charming, exceptional service, and just an overall gem. Even though it's the winter season - and thus only the main shop really contains plants or anything to purchase - the selection of plants was surprisingly diverse. I found a number of itty bitty plants that were on my wishlist, and they also happened to be the perfect size for me to snag a few extras to give as gifts to colleagues. Wonderful plant options at a fantastic value. (I also snagged the last "boobie cactus" - and yes, that's what it's usually called, lol - and now a couple of my colleagues are all excited about propagating from it.) It doesn't hurt that when I first arrived to the shop, I was adorably greeted by a gentle giant of a dog named Henry. I made sure to give Henry plenty of pets and face smooshies, and then he happily trotted off to the back office. The folks here genuinely care about their customers and providing an exceptional experience. I can't wait to visit again when the weather is a bit warmer and the grounds are opened up a bit more. :) read more

Great selection this Spring! Beautiful multicolored hanging baskets at affordable prices! So many flowers and plants to choose from. Love the landscape with babbling stream, and pond filled with coy fish. Many chickens wondering the grounds. Lots of nature to experience at this quaint family owned nursery! THE place to go! They have a fantastic selection of indoor and outdoor plants, potting soils, fertilizers, and decor! Interested in different varieties of indoor plants? They got you (and the prices are reasonable)! Want native outdoor plants? They have them too! I don't know any other place that carries a good stock of native plants in the area. They carry Fox Farms products, which is a huge bonus for me! Its my go-to spot for all things plant related! read more

I have been going to Ballantyne Gardens for over 10 years. I look forward every spring for their bus trips. This summer Tim did some much needed landscaping to my home and I can't describe what an excellent job he did. He knew exactly what I wanted and his professionalism was wonderful. I came in search of some specific herbs. While they didn't have the exact plants I wanted, (to be fair, none of the shops in Syracuse seem to, so I think my timing might just be off,) I enjoyed my short visit. The atmosphere is very charming. There's a wide backyard and a few fountains, and there are chickens roaming around! A couple of the plants I saw looked a bit thirsty and the parking lot is wicked small, but overall this is an excellent garden center. Very pretty spot with helpful staff. Glancing at the pictures and other reviews, it seems like the owners do a lot of education, which is cool. As a cat-mom, I was especially happy to see that pet safe plants were marked- super important! read more

Ballantyne Gardens is absolutely wonderful I've been here twice with my family. The first time was for a Christmas tree for my family and the second time was a few weeks ago. We didn't know it but we came right before closing time and met the owner and an employee both were super friendly and helpful! We met the owners chickens and we ended up purchasing lilac tree for my in-laws. Aside from the lilacs they have a widespread of beautiful flowers and plants with decent prices. read more

Beautiful plant store with absolutely wonderful staff. I have had my heart set on calathea plants for a while and some larger stores in the area only carry very common houseplants. I happened upon this store when I googled "calathea" and actually did not realize that Ballantyne was so close to me, or that they have such a great variety that includes many rare plants. They get new items in regularly and what they do have is very well taken care of. They also have very cute chickens wandering the store! Would highly recommend to all of my plant lovers out there! read more

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I took our local youth group to learn about gardening to Ballantyne Gardens. The owners, Tim & Lisa, welcomed us with a sign for our group! They were as thrilled to have us as we were to be there! The greenhouse and grounds are beautiful! They prepared a wonderful presentation for the kids that included the safeguarding of our native pollinators and the proper growing methods that helped new gardeners. They introduced our group to the chickens they had on the grounds and how they help fertilize the garden and how they remove unwanted insects from plants. They also provided materials for the kids to plant their own plants in biodegradable containers as a donation to our efforts to help grow edible plants for Meals-On-Wheels! They also educated our group on the correct use and types of natural fertilizer for gardening. Tim and Lisa are amazing generous in helping the community! They were patient with all of our students questions and were very thorough in explaining things! They are VERY knowledgeable and kind people! This is the kind of local business that we should all stand behind! If I could give more than 5 stars in my review, they would have it! They have beautiful plants & flowers too! This is definitely a place you'll want to stop in and grab some beautiful, healthy plants for your garden! This was a wonderful experience for our youth, you will not be disappointed! read more

We hired them to rip out all our existing landscaping and come up with a simpler, beautiful new landscape for our front and side yard. It was a HUGE job. Tim and Lisa came up with the perfect plan for us, considered all our needs but also helped us with suggestions. Tim and the crew spent 2-3 days working here and the result is a complete and amazing transformation of our yard. It looks like a completely new house, but at the same time, seems as if it is the way it should have looked all along. It was exactly what we had wanted and more! Tim took time to explain all the new plants to us how to care for everything. We couldn't be happier with Ballantyne Gardens for this project and would highly recommend them to anyone! Old Fashioned Personal Service with a Genuine Smile. My husband and I went there in search of some organic compost that was not available at the closer bigger heavily advertised location. We were pleasantly shocked at the warm reception, excellent service and strong knowledge base of the owners Tim and Lisa. The plants were healthy and beautifully arranged and the store was full of friendly four legged and avian companions. Henceforth this will always be our first stop for our gardening needs!
