I am pretty new to The Dalles and have been told that this is THE place to go eat. I have been twice and...... I don't get it. Both times have been very disappointing. The food has not been good. Not even close in my opinion. On both occasions we ordered the calamari. The first time I just didn't like it, the most recent time it was inedible. The garlic was so overpowering that one bite was all I could handle. My boyfriend refuses to waste food and will eat just about anything..... and he even couldn't handle it. We didn't send it back, but we certainly should have. I had the Bleu Bird sandwich. It was okay once I scrapped off about 3 tablespoons of mayo. My boyfriend had the seafood linguine. The seafood tasted old. Not like it had gone bad..... just not at all fresh. They do not skimp on the seafood though. There was A LOT of it in the pasta. However, I would rather have less fresher seafood than lots of low quality (maybe prior frozen?) seafood. It just wasn't good. Maybe I have just had bad luck and I'm just missing the mark because people really seem to like this place. We had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table on Friday night. The place was packed! I'll try it again, because my options in TD are pretty limited and I feel like by my third visit..... something should go right, right?? Meh. I am so sadly disappointed. After doing my Yelp homework, I already knew what I wanted to order before we parked the car. It would be the infamous French onion soup and the stuffed mushrooms for me! My Mom-in-law had the soup with the half ceasar salad. The manfolk opted for the Santa Fe burger with potato salad. Our soup arrived and looked amazing. They have a complimentary loaf of homemade bread (yummy). I had a few small bites as my soup cooled. Uh oh. We have a problem. I like salt. Like, I really like salt. With that being said, this was VERY salty. I knew that if I thought it was too salty, Mom would probably be hating it. I asked, already knowing the answer. She ate three bites and pushed it away. I tried to eat it all, to no avail. I was still optimistic about my shrooms and Moms salad. The rest of our food arrived 15 minutes later or so. Moms salad was basic, which is understandable. It's lettuce, salad, cheese and croutons. My order consisted of four very large mushrooms, that were supposed to have artichoke hearts, bread crumbs and delicious spices and flavors. There was "stuffing" but the only flavor they had was bad. I'm not sure how to describe bland and tasteless to ick, what did I just eat? The manfolk was happy with his burger, hence the three stars, and the waitress was nice. I really enjoyed the Baldwin Saloon. The building built in 18 49 I believe was a beautifully preserved piece of history for the town. On the inside it was decorated with half nude ladies scantily clad like you would find hangover some Western bar from an old Saloon days. The bar railing kit bar at the bottom of the brass bar or from an old-school bar that they had brought in. I understand from someone that previously the building housed saddle makers. The decorations and the brick walls and the chandeliers all made it seem very old timey and the menu was really really something to look at. I ordered a Reuben on Fresh French bread that was made on premises and also ordered was a Cobb salad and a seafood salad and everything was right on the Mark. I was told not to worry about a thing there and they were absolutely correct. read more

Far from bawdy, this classy establishment features turn of the century Englehart oil paintings on every wall, an 1899 Schubert piano, and tons of other nifty antique and historical pieces that span the history of the building. Sometimes a small town restaurant gets it right - that describes Baldwin Saloon to a "T." The ambiance is simple yet interesting. The place is an historical building filled with large oil paintings primarily from one artist famous for early 20th Century west coast landscapes. After a day in the Gorge, the art somehow really adds to the experience of connecting with nature. There's a wide variety of items available on the menu - in fact if anything the menu offers too many choices; is it really necessary to have four different Halibut entres? But no matter, turns out everything is really very good and the portions are large. The staff is friendly and the place is well located within the downtown part of The Dalles. Next time I'm in the Gorge I won't hesitate about where to stop to eat; Baldwin Saloon won me over. read more

Supposedly one of the best restaurants in The Dalles. I was expecting to be blown away I guess. Long day in the airport and on the road coming in from Portland....maybe I was just tired and being a picky little baby. Had a glass of wine, and the Captain's Seafood Platter. The Captain's Platter consisted of beer-battered deep-fried halibut, breaded fresh deep fried scallops, fresh pan fried oysters, and deep fried prawns. Served with cocktail sauce for 28 bucks. The scallops were amazing...but everything else was just fried food. The coleslaw was pretty good as were the oysters, but honestly, I thought they would be really something special - but they were just A-ok....i.e. 3-stars. I wanted it to be better, but it was just an old restaurant in an old town, that had a whole lot of locals who really like the place and recommend it a lot. The bar was extremely well appointed and the wine selection was pretty good. I did enjoy two rather excellent glasses of their house red (its name escapes me). The staff and bar team were excellent and I cannot complain about anything at all. They took very good care of us. Like I said, just a little disappointed that a 70 dollar meal didn't excite me a little more. read more

My husband and I stopped for a meal late afternoon on Friday, having found the Baldwin Salloon on Yelp. I'd give it 6 stars if I could! My husband had a bowl of clam chowder that he loved and shrimp tacos. The tacos were fabulous, homemade tortilla thin and delicate, which held together perfectly. I am gluten free and they had me with gluten free pasta. When I asked what kind of pasta, Ashley, our knowledgable server. Informed me all types of pasta are homemade gluten free. I started with the Turkey noodle soup, yum. Then I ordered the smoked salmon and shrimp fettuccine alfredo. OMG! The best alfredo dish I've ever had, even before I discovered my gluten intolerance. Today, I had one of those crappy Mondays highlighted only by the best BLT I have ever had. This sucker was off the hook. It was so good I wanted to smack the waitress three times across the mouth just cause I liked it. The bread was some sort of grilled blue cheese goodness. The bacon was thick, flavorful, and delicious. Shredded lettuce sliced tomato and a healthy (or not so healthy) dose of mayo. You have to eat it. We went here for lunch on a Saturday in October. A lot of Oregonians were trying to patronize the Gorge after the fires, and actually it was really busy in Hood River. This restaurant in The Dalles had a steady flow of customers. The Baldwin is a charming old building and it's well worth going just for the scene. There are few restaurants or bars in Oregon with that kind of vintage--the only ones that come to my mind are the famous Huber's in Portland or maybe Tolly's in Oakland OR. Unlike some other reviewers' experiences, our service was actually quite good, a friendly guy who seemed pretty experienced. The food is where I'm hung up. It was...decent. For a lot of America it would be considered very good. But this is Oregon and our expectations are higher. We came to experience the Gorge, during the peak of fall harvest. And while there were apples and pears at orchards just up the road--literally!--we could have been anywhere in a suburban strip mall for lunch. I would still advise people to come here. But I see so much potential, I'm going to be bold and throw some advice to the owners: Ditch the Denny's-style laminated menu. Make it shorter. Have your front page titled "The Northwest Connection" or similar and make it change seasonally with the produce you're highlighting. Examples... Do a pear and blue cheese salad (the classics work). Or grill a sandwich with a locally sourced ham or turkey and some thinly sliced apples and camembert. (No, I didn't make this dish up--I've had it elsewhere.) Or a local mushroom bruschetta. Oh, and that's another thing. You mention you grind your own hamburger. Don't just mention it in passing. Feature it, and answer the obvious follow up question in a diner's mind--where do you source your meat? Finally, appearance matters. On your website (and your menu) update your design. All that extra bold/ital/underline combo stuff is tiring to read. Get a real old-style font not Times New Roman. And proofread-- please don't spell prosciutto with the u first. (Found on your specials on the website). Would love to see the Baldwin really become a star and take on the powerhouses up the road in Hood River. read more

A bit over priced in the overall menu, however the food was decent, given the limited amount restaurant options in The Dallas, I would have made an exception. However, the customer service here is by far some of the worst I have ever encountered and I believe it is fostered by the owner's arrogant and entitled attitude that bleeds into the rest of his staff. Service was mediocre at best and our server seemed only in a rush to take our orders and get us out with no attempt to engage us. This was a slow Saturday night so I wasn't sure why she seemed like she was such in a hurry and would walk off mid sentence when inquiring about a menu item. We had the scallops, chicken, and BBQ salmon special. All were tasty yet not thoughtfully prepared or presented which didn't quite align with the pricing. But the biggest complaint was the fact that the owner, refused to remove a $5 glass of Rose from our tab (and replacing it with a Chardonnay)after we returned it because it was, #1. Not a Rose but a Zinfandel, and #2. Principals of customer service. So maybe it sounds pretentious right?? Not really.. look, if you have a party of three who spent nearly $150 on food in a small restaurant establishment in a small town with a lot of visitors, any experienced restauranteur would in good conscience remove that small item to make a big difference and impression on whether or not these patrons would return or recommend this establishment. Judging from some of the more recent reviews, this person has no business running a restaurant and has no clue about how to manage restaurant reputation. The only interaction we got from him was the glare he gave us in the way out. I will not be returning to this restaurant and I would advise a friendlier establishment or taking a drive to Hood River. read more

When you come to The Dalles, Oregon, you don't think of a destination for foodies...However, do not be fooled, The Dalles has some seriously amazing restaurants, and Baldwins is one of them. I wish you could see how happy my tastebuds were when eating my food. I had the Chicken Parmigiana and my husband had the seafood fettuccine and clam chowder. Ok, so they do not put potatoes in their clam chowder. Go figure, just clams, in the clam chowder. My husband said it is the best clam chowder he has ever had, and honestly he is a clam chowder snob, so I know he was serious. My Chicken Parm was excellent! I could taste the freshness of everything. It's all homemade. The seafood fettuccine was out of this world good. The huge pieces of smoked salmon were insane! There is no scimping on portions here. Even though were full, we ordered the Coconut Cream Pie for dessert. I mean, it said it May be the best cream pie around. IT IS!! OMG!!! it was delicately perfect and not too sweet or coconutty (it's a word..lol). One star is too much for this place. While the interior is well-decorated, the staff and manager were the rudest we have EVER encountered. We thought that four adults could have a quiet, pleasant dinner here -- but apparently that was hoping for too much. After putting our name down, we waited in the entranceway along with everyone else but were rudely told to "move" several times by waitstaff. With extremely limited waiting space, we tried our best to stay out of the way, however as we waited we had a waitress push her way past us with an air of extreme annoyance. We could have dealt with that, but the worst moment came when my mom tried to sit at the bar to order a drink and was quite literally chased off by some of the terrible "regulars" who seem to frequent this place. The bartender had completely ignored my mom, and spent his time grovelling to their needs. They then complained loudly when we were seated first despite the fact that we had arrived first and the hostess had written our name above theirs! The manager then came out to see what was going on and, unbelievably, said this was "not going to work" and suggested we leave?! After TAKING OUR MENUS FROM OUR HANDS, he crowded us out the door and showed us we were unwelcome. After we confusedly left, he followed us out the door and sarcastically told us that "another restaurant down the street would serve us"! We were speechless at the rude treatment we received at the Baldwin Saloon. The staff have no business being in the hospitality industry. The group of regulars who felt entitled to all the bar seats were quite literally some of the rudest and snobbiest people we have ever had the misfortune of meeting. In addition, we are certain that they heard my mom speaking with a Spanish accent and decided that they could passive aggresively mock her. We tried to make most of it by putting kids at one table and adults on two tables. The owner came to make a harsh toned statement "Everyone needs to stay seated. It is a restaurant, meant for seating." This was in front of kids for age 5-10 who were shocked by how rude the owner was, only to hear next from the owner "Do we have a problem?" We decided to ease the situation by sitting with our own children. The owner returned now very impatiently to announce "Do I need to say it 2nd time? You cannot walk around! You need to sit down!" We tried to nicely explain we were trying to sit with our own children to ease the situation. He then bluntly said "This is my place. I tell you what to do." My husband told him "Please relax and leave us alone!" He became furious "It is my place. I decide how to treat you. It is not Chucky Cheese! You should just get your bill and leave." Hands down the rudest owner ever! I have never been to Chucky Cheese but can only imagine way better manners and service than this Baldwin Saloon owner. Btw food is lousy. This place is hit or miss. It can be great depending on who is working the day you go. Last month we had a fabulous waitress, and the food was very good. Unfortunately, today we had a snotty waitress, that made us feel like we were a bother. We ordered the Bonney Burger, The Baldwin Burger, and the smoked salmon shrimp fettuccine alfredo. The burgers were very good, the fries over cooked (really charred) and since they were out of smoked salmon, I had to change my order to just shrimp fettuccine. The pasta was good, but the shrimp were way over cooked, and rubbery, with little to no flavor. The waitress never came back after she served us our food, until we were ready for our check. No water refills which was frustrating. When we looked at the check we saw we were charged .71 for a little ranch. If they were consistently great, I'd keep going, but they are too spendy for me to risk another crappy, semi rude lunch. read more

Never been treated so poorly....i have rarley even sent a dish back because of taste...when i did....a person came out and proceded to tell me ibeas wrong. And that they are the only ones who make pasta correctly, and other establishments "cheat". No apology. Dod review on Facebook and that same person slammed me on social media, making assumptions (that were incorrect) and saying the other reason he took it off the bill was he felt sorry for "my husband". 1) was not there with my husband, as i am not married 2) how does he know it wasn't a casual business lunch? Had not been by this joint in a couple years, I'm a travel'in man, up and down the gorge, stay damn busy. So's my frail and I stops in for a bite after the waitress tells her there's plenty of room and food will be up in ten minutes cause I'm in hurry as usual. She takes our order most rickety tick. Had to finally ask em' to bring the damn cup a joe I ordered. The cup was a dainty lil thing, some daisy would drink out of and it wasn't even full. 25 minutes and my food wasn't on the table. My doll tells the waitress to bring me more coffee cause I'm gonna use it up and .. she should watch my cup to be certain it's not dry. I gets tense when the day is long and still lots to do, and miles ta go. That didn't work very well. Getting more coffee was tedious and slow. My food was excellent. But, my salad had a minimum of dressing served with it. I asked for more, the girl said she'd bring it. She did, but by then I was long since done eating. I left half of my salad .. undressed .. which is a good way to leave some things, but not salads. I like those dressed as a rule, Here's the ol' bottom line ya mugs. The food was superb. The coffee was good. The problem was getting the food on the table in a timely manner which isn't happening here. Getting coffee is another matter entirely. Better off to bring your own if you really want coffee to drink while you eat. Or go have it someplace that will keep it flowing. Order extra salad dressing at square one if you have salad cause they will only bring enough for about half of the salad and getting more is gonna be awhile. Took over an hour to get in and out. If you work for a liv'in you might not have that much time to spare. I don't. Maybe it'll be better next time I stop here, say in a few years .. if ever. Cousin's hops to it when you go there to eat. Liked the menu options looking online and were referred by the hotel manager after wine touring in the gorge. We were Ignored while locals were heartily greeted and got drinks but once the server showed up and took our order everything moved very quickly. Had a Great second glass of Pines red wine when the first glass came out with stuff stuck inside the glass but it was served anyway. Second glass did come out quickly. Soup and salad came out before the appetizers and bread. Really. Started the salad but had a long hair in my third bite. No apologies or recognition from the staff other than "would you like another one?" Soup was shrimp bisque and decent. Dijon calamari was very good following the salad. Bread was a good soft French. Chicken scallopine was good but not pounded thin and even and so texture differed throughout. could have used more (some) lemon. Couscous was really great. Broccoli was great. Coquille st Jacques Scallops were cooked very well but tasted like a Cajun dish and too spicy. Served dry With little cream sherry sauce at all. I think the cook made the dish poorly but too tired to deal with fixing it. I would have the Pines wine every night and loved the couscous and calamari. Server was pleasant. But everything was so uneven for the price I cannot recommend it unless you enjoy the issues above with your meal.
