North side meets Bay Street. I like this cafe because to me it feels like a little bit of the North side has come to Port Melbourne. Located even at the northern end of Bay Street, this Cafe is a bit more chill and less pretentious than those closer to the beach. Coffee is great, all the regular milk/non-milk options available, chai and matcha latte are wins also. They haven't got the golden (turmeric) latte yet but I'm working on them. I haven't eaten a large range if their foods but the sandwiches are spot on with fresh bread & fillings and if the peanut and jelly muffin is in the counter stand throw out your diet and get one! The cafe itself is smallish and I find it can get a bit loud, they don't take bookings but don't have an issue with seating a large group, willing to ask other customers to move if need be, and other customers don't mind! The staff are super friendly and helpful and know their regulars well.

    Brownies of awesomeness.

A relaxed atmosphere with fun and informal service, Balderdash was a nice addition to Bay Street when it opened about a year ago. The boys here know good coffee and always nail a consistent cup. They have their own blend, created and roasted for them by Five Senses, along with a rotating list of singles from various sources. I recommend trying those as a pour over or cold drip. This place gets pretty packed on the weekend when people file in for breakfast and lunch from a menu that has all the usual suspects. The homemade sweets are great - brownies, muffins and pink iced cupcakes are always a welcome pick me up in the afternoon. With outdoor seating, bowls of water for the local dogs and the friendliest service, Balderdash is exactly what a local cafe should be - welcoming and easy.

Thank goodness for Balderdash. Mark, Nick & their gorgeous team of coffee professionals have created something to skip down the street about. Offering all the perfect cafe options. Love just my plain poached eggs and their yummy pizza like omelettes. Yum. Cakes, slices and muffins made in-house. Coffee options to satisfy the coffee nerd in us all. Cold drip, cold brew, pourover, etc. Outdoor seating available. Love making new friends here, and making new friends with other furry mates too. Oh and their custom coffee machine is really really groovy. x

I have been here a couple of times and the service has been fabulous. The staff are friendly and make excellent food recommendations. Who knows - maybe all the food is good. Coffee is excellent. As are the lovely little cakes - try the wheat free, banana, almond flour and chocolate ganache muffiny thing next time you have an afternoon craving. Lunch worth trying is the Moroccan Chicken Salad with mixed greens, mograbiah, preserved lemons, grated carrot, chickpeas and dressed with raita. My friend enjoyed the BLTC wrap which, for a non bread eater like me, looked pretty tasty. There was loads of flavour, bacon, chicken and greenery going on inside a thin crisp wrap.

So somewhere in my dreams there is a place that serves Mac and Cheese for breakfast without having to beg for it off the lunch menu. It is a dreamy place where the coffee is nice, they do iced chais and have sassy wait staff who never fail to make you feel like you have been a regular there forever. Welcome to Balderdash where all of this Melbourne girls dreams do come true, yes they have mac and cheese for breakfast!! Given all this hype I probably should have ordered this but I didn't, I have the corn fritter waffles with bacon and home made baked beans and they tasted like happiness I can promise you. My tip is book a table if you don't want to wait as this place is a little packed on a Saturday morning!

In its early days, this place would have warranted a 4-5 star review, but as it stands I am giving it 3.5. When it first opened on Bay street I was delighted, the place was small and quaint, never over crowded with just the right amount of seating. I used to come for the feta and basil pesto eggs or the lime and goats cheese with poached egg on turkish bread. Like any good cafe that mets the demands & needs of its clientele, it quickly grew in popularity and I noticed the quality of the food start to drop, portion size and perhaps even the standard of service, waiting up to 40 minutes for a meal to arrive. I haven't returned since that soured my experience and every time I think about going the crowds put me off.

Consistently good coffee, but the fitout is a bit try-hard, and the music is hit-or-miss enough to be annoying. Service is good.

    The X-ray coffee machine!

The first day in Australia, I was craving a big, hearty sandwich, a rarity in Japan. A quick Google…read moresearch led me to Bowery to Williamsburg. The name suggests a connection to the street or bridge in NYC. Am I correct? Located in the alley between Flinders and Collins, parallel to Russell, it was a bit unexpected to find this eatery here. With plenty of tables on the patio and inside, the atmosphere was inviting. Being alone, I didn't want to occupy a larger table, so I decided to grab my order to go. After glancing over the menu, my eyes locked on the 'Reuben,' thinking 'this can't go wrong.' The staff were kind and friendly. Despite not dining in, they allowed me to sit and wait at a table. After a few minutes, I received my order and rushed back to the hotel because I couldn't wait! Excitement led me to open the box like a treasure chest, revealing a huge sandwich - the portion I had been searching for. In Japan, where I live, the general trend is to reduce portions to maintain prices rather than increase prices to keep portions consistent in the face of inflation. Now you understand how crucial this is. Another crucial aspect - the taste was on point. With a generous portion of meat, it dominated the experience along with the sourness from the pickled cabbage. It was a bit too sour for my taste, but I assume that's how a Reuben usually tastes. Overall, I was really pleased with this place and would love to come back again.

Breakfast they say, is the most important meal of the day, it gives you energy, gives you clarity…read moreto get through the day, it sets the tone. So finding the perfect breakfast, well let's face it, is reality easy in a city such as Melbourne. So many cafes and restaurants offering their take on poached eggs, smashed avocado sprinkled with the latest super food grain and freshly juiced kale and ginger juice makes it a smorgasbord of choices for today's customer. Hotel restaurants around the world have been offering up a breakfast buffet since the dawn of time, with a large degree of failure. The biggest challenge being keeping the offering hot and serving up a variety that keeps them a step a head of their competition. Collins Kitchen in the Grand Hyatt Melbourne offers up this time honoured tradition and where others have missed the mark the Hyatt have not only exceeded the mark but have set the barre to new heights. Firstly this is a grand restaurant overlooking the plain trees of Russell Street, with warm and inviting furniture that lets you know you're in a five star dining room in a world renowned hotel, a perfect place for the perfect breakfast. The major difference here is how they offer you the food, there is not a trestle table or Bain marie in sight, instead they have four show kitchens, each with a dedicated chef, either cooking to order your choice of eggs, be it poached or a wonderful fluffy omelette, or continually cooking crispy bacon, sauté mushrooms or an array of dim sum. Fresh fruit, an assortment of freshly baked bread and a chef offering to squeeze you a super juice, is awaiting you in another kitchen. There's a deli with smoked salmon, turkey and ham on offer with a great selection of cheese and crackers. If that doesn't fill you up then you'll need to head over to what one can only describe as heavens kitchen. Freshly made waffles and pancakes with fruit compotes and cream. Pastries and cakes galore will give anyone with a slight sugar addiction the fix they need. The only way to make this experience better would be to offer ice cream for the waffles, but that's just me being slightly greedy. This is not a place for a quick breakfast, to get the full experience you need to spend a couple of hours here and for $42 is certainly value for money.

High Tea at Hyatt So…read moreI just came back from the Hyatt high tea and I had a lovely time. The three of us were given two stands that displayed 9 sandwiches and 8 cakes. We were also given 10 scones and more than enough cream and jam (raspberry & fig) to accompany. The setting here at the Hyatt is beautifully laid out, the table settings are good quality and room oozes of class and style. The service was fantastic, the waiter for our table was extremely polite and professional. I found the servings to be very generous here, we had so many left over cakes-unfortunately they do not offer take away services, and so it's a bit of a waste if you don't finish it. The sandwiches included an egg salad, aged waygu beef and smoked salmon. The cakes included a chocolate mud, chocolate opera, pistachio sponge, cheesecake and strawberry mousse. I was also surprised by how many scones they gave us, did they really except us to eat that many? Overall this was a very pleasant afternoon, the ambience of the place was quite and relaxing and the prices were around $30ish per person. I will definitely head back here soon, perfect place for afternoon tea.
