I have never had to wait more than a few minutes for a glorious meal and an epic coffee at Industry - sure the parking is a jerk, but right between Nicholson and Brunswick Street means public transport ahoy! My absolute favourite dish is the Lemongrass Beef with Betel Leaf, however that is not always what a hungover human is after. Instead, try the smashed avo or the fried chicken burger - holy bananas are they good. Most recently we grabbed the Industry Charcuterie, which we had heard was one of the best in Melbourne. I had been wanting to go to industry beans for a while having heard bout their coffee and salivated while reading their menu but it didn't live up to the hype I had created in my head On a 9am Saturday morning it was quite empty. My brunch date had chosen to sit outside and despite the heating I was freezing. My extra hot skim dirty chai arrived with an espresso shot in the cup and a small jug of chai flavoured milk. Too much milk and not enough coffee as I used the espresso shot all at once. The chai was subtly flavoured but it was one bloody good dirty chai. I got the crispy beans quinoa with avocado and puffed rice. The dish I got had heaps of crispy beans duh that were flavourless. Smashed avocado covered the small amount of quinoa underneath. The one slice of chilli added nothing to the flavour. The dish tasted just like avocado. Avocado bland and no amount of salt or pepper helped. The chilli did nothing. The beans provided crunchiness but no flavour. The puffed rice again added no flavour. Quinoa itself was tasteless. The best thing about the dish was the poached egg. Hmm. For 23 bucks it's not a large dish and not flavourful. My brunch mates shanklish omelette was quite dry with a strong taste of cheese that arrived with some very dry sourdough bread. He enjoyed his omelette but thought it was just ok. Waiter was quick to kick us out despite there being no rush or wait. Hmm Average experience. read more

They roast their own beans here and offer a range of preparation styles (espresso based, filter, cold brew etc). You can buy coffee beans for home use too. I had a strong latte (double ristretto based) and it was not bad. Not great either, but OK. The wife had a cappuccino which was served luke warm. The venue itself is warehouse style but smaller, has high ceilings and was very busy on this Saturday arvo. There's also a nice looking outdoor / garden area. Loved my brunch this morning. So much so I had to review it ASAP. I tend to hang south of the river and when i venture north it needs to be worthwhile and this sure was. We had a good mix if sweet and savoury and as per usual shared everything. Have to say the bill was quite reasonable for the quality of food and quantity that we ate. The plates were all quite creative and super happy with the pulled pork how cakes and the French toast was delicious. There was also a side of duck bacon ... mainly due to curiosity and vegetable chips which were served with paprika mayo. My coffee was great and beautifully presented for something as simple as a long black. I wanted something warm on a col drizzly day but did get slight coffee envy when I saw a few people having cold drip. This is definitely the place to get experimental with coffee. The space itself is well designed, large communal tables both inside and out. The space is well lit and quite cheerful yet still ha a strongly industrial feel. Service was exceptional. Stand alone (intense) coffee menu & slightly intimidating regular menu full of foods you've never heard of, alongside one of the coolest fitouts I've ever seen at a cafe. But don't be afraid - I've honestly never had a bad meal here - in fact, the food is usually delicious. The coffee admittedly can be a tiny bit hit & miss depending on the day but is very good for the most part. The staff are so so friendly & it's quite a big space so can accommodate loads of people which is good because it gets busy on the weekends. The menu is seasonal so it's always changing but the avocado smash is always excellent (and generous with the avo), the burgers are always great & the summer green papaya (with cured kingfish) is a highlight of the current summer menu. There is no surprise that melbourners and fiztroyians (?) braved the cold and rain to pack out this very cool (VERY warm), seriously industrial, funky eatery. Dining amongst shelves and shelves of locally roasted coffee beans, this experience is fun to start off with and is lifted by the quality of the food served. So much more than your standard poached eggs on toast the quality of the food here is simply mint. There will be a wait for a table (you have been warned) BUT the food comes out so quickly you will find it hard not to forgive the lovely staff of this establishment. Every element on each of our dishes was on point. The polenta chips are the best I've had! On top of all this the coffee is amazing and there is quite the menu for any coffee connoisseur! A friend recommended this place and we went for breakfast on Sunday after Yoga. Well, I loved it. The place was packed to the rafters as you'd expect so we had to wait a little bit but it was a beautiful day so we didn't mind. It was nice to be out. I ordered the Coconut Crusted Brioche, which was absolutely delicious. The presentation was very nice, visually attractive and added to the whole experience. My Flat White was also really nice. There are plenty of other options on the menu to suit all palate and I already have my eye on the Wild Mushroom and the Wagyu Burger for my next visits. Nothing short of spectacular! Took a nice cycle with my family to this place. Blew me away with the food. There was a 25 min wait but the wait was worth it. Got some water to start then a few ginger beers (unfortunately no alcoholic drinks here). Then started to order. The food came in time and the wild mushrooms were excellent. A good mix of different mushrooms with excellent flavour and perfect texture. The poached egg was standard and watercress added a nice touch. The truffle foam however made the dish special. The addition of polenta chips definitely made the dish special. The polenta mix felt like a nice cheese mix in the chip but polenta is very light so a good healthy alternative but probably the best tasting chip I've had in a long time. Definitely recommend this place although a little pricey was definitely worth the wait and price and would come back here again! Came back here a second time. It was a 30 minute wait for an 8 seater table but were very accomodating in trying to clear a table for us. Got a table with good service as well however the only bad parts of the meal was a few things forgotten such as table water for the table and a ginger beer ordered was forgotten but this time I ordered the Fried Chicken Creole burger. I asked for extra pickles and they gave it to me, excellent. The texture of the fried chicken was soft and succulent while also having the skin being crispy but not falling apart. The beetroot relish tomato seed salad was excellent and once again the polenta chips were spectactular with the cheese mix in the chip giving it good flavour while the aioli sauce that came with it gave the chip extra flavour. However, the staff is on top of everything and we were seated within 10 minutes! The lattes were perfect - not a hint of bitterness. All of the food looked amazing and I wish that I had been hungrier. Instead of a larger dish, I had one of their fresh muffins: chocolate, raspberry and coconut! YUM! The setting isn't as loud as I would expect from a warehouse. I love this place for their food, friendly service, cold drip, location, ambiance, and also their hot coffee (in order). This is my favourite regular coffee place north of Johnston St. The food menu is creative and the dishes all live up to their expectations. Staff are very professional AND friendly - they remember you after a few visits (I got to pet-photo sharing stage within a couple of months). Presentation - the building, the coffee, the tables, the food, the staff, the view of the busy kitchen - all superb. However, the high warehouse ceilings, long benches, and structured layout can make the vibe a little sterile, especially when it is too busy to get much attention from the staff. The coffee - doesn't blow my mind (some blends / single origins were simply not as good as other Melbourne venues), but it is a very consistent quality and I am a regular. TIPS - It gets SUPER busy on the weekends, but the staff handle it with grace. If time is an issue then perhaps find somewhere else, as the wait for the food can take a while. - I noticed families, including those with small children, found it a great space as the long tables are perfect for groups. - The sunny area at the front is great if you are on the phone, smoke, or want some fresh air. read more

Industry Beans are speciality roasters, they are famous for making their own coffee. If you grab a table at the very back of cafe you'll be able to watch how the coffee is roasted. Industry Beans coffee menu is educating customers on various techniques and flavours of coffee available. Numerous brewing methods are available such as poir over, Aeropress, v60, cold drip and espresso based coffee. On weekends they are always busy, come on weekdays to avoid the crowd. All the staff are pretty knowledgable regarding coffee and their food, most of them are happy to explain things to you. I admit, I probably would've given this place a 4, or maybe 4.5 stars if this restaurant was located in say, Beijing or San Jose, but it's not. Let me get this straight - the vibe/environment here is superb. The architecture is post modern but laid back and doesn't have the harsh industrial feel. Spacious and comfy. The food - it's creative and interesting. However, for what it's worth, the taste doesn't live up to its hype, I'm sorry. I'm going to be a bit controversial here. There's enough 5 star-reviews on this page that I think people will be encouraged to make up their own mind. Anyone that knows me, knows that I like my coffee. To the point where I have been spotted at Yelp events and referred to as 'the coffee girl'. It's for that reason that I could not write a glowing review about this place and lead my fellow coffee nerds astray. I was greeted (six times I might add - man these people are friendly!) with a 12-page coffee menu. I was super excited. Started with a pour over. Oh. Not great. Moved on to a long black. Undrinkable. It wasn't burnt, it wasn't made incorrectly. The taste was just awful and unlike any specialty coffee I've ever had. It's just not good coffee. This put me off trying any of the experiments like the Coffee Pearls or 'Cold Drip Cavier'. My bf and I ordered burgers for lunch - the Roo Burger and Brioche Bunny Burger. We split them to try each.The rabbit was delicious. Really, really good. Unfortunately the brioche was so sickly sweet that it was more like a croissant than a bun. The Roo burger promised that it was chilli and coffee infused, of which I tasted neither. Again, bun so sweet that I thought I was going to bring it up for a good couple of hours after attempting it. We were so disappointed. The food looks SO amazing and the rabbit really was great, so I don't doubt that many of the dishes on their extensive menu taste as good as they look...but they have a way to go before the coffee is going to take on the likes of the top roasteries in this town. Service, 5 star. Really. The guys were so lovely, to the point where when asked how the long black was (which I didn't even finish half of, it was that bad) I avoided eye contact and said good. How can you give anything other than 5 stars to a cafe/roastery where the staff greet you by name, and let you pay by card for just one coffee - no excuse not to get the morning Joe here! Not only that, the coffee is CONSISTENTLY AMAZING. Not just consistently good, consistently amazing! The baristas are both artists and scientists, and are guided by feel, experience and science - they have some of the same equipment here as I have in the lab! Inside reveals a nice and modern industrial look with walls made out of pallets and warehouse metallic racks where the large coffee beans bags are stored. Finally a great place for premium coffee in Fitzroy north of Johnston St or even north of Gertrude. Yeah I know, first world problems. But you're on Yelp, so I know you care about this stuff. Wonderful selection of blends and single origin coffees to more than please the coffee snobs and aficionados. And presentation of coffees couldn't more delightful. Beautiful matte black ceramic cups and saucers, insulated glass tumblers for cold drips which come in cute little bottles. For a warehouse fit out they have done extremely well. The place feels inviting despite the large interior space. There's a large outdoor area under translucent covering. Inside, long share tables, high two-person stool tables along the wall, and benches at the window. A seating style to suit all. The main challenge they will have with the space is heat. No aircon, just fans. Heat gets trapped in there and there are skylights high above in the warehouse roof which let through a lovely glow to place, but also heat. Possibly noise could be a problem when full. Lastly the food. Delicious and gorgeous presentation. A selection of modern lunch and breakfast options. I had the slow roasted pork belly and it was great. Check the website for the menu. I'm pretty sure I will upgrade this place to a 5 stars in no time. But they just opened and running off buzz and excitement, so I'll give them something to aim for ;) Ooh, one more thing. I want to like this place, but it's too pretentious and can't handle their current popularity. It's been packed every weekend since opening, but despite the place not being huge and having a seemingly large staff-to-patron ratio, it took 40 minutes for our food to come out. Our waitress did the same thing with us as we later saw her do with everyone else around us - took our coffee order, came back to take our food order, submitted it to the kitchen, and then came back and told us there was a 30 minute wait on food. Maybe they only quote times after submitting orders, but this is something you should tell people when they sit down. They are emulating the other popular but too-wanky-for-me fancy coffee places, with a whole little book when you sit down about the many different types of zero-origin-freer-than-thou-trade coffees they offer in different formats like pourovers and siphons and water pipes and pearls. I know some people like this, but it's too much for me, I just want really good tasting straightforward coffee. Which we did get, 20 minutes after ordering it - again, they are victims of their own popularity and can't seem to handle the crowds they're getting. The brunch menu, like seemingly every cafe that has opened in the past couple years, is just way too high on wank and not high enough on simple delicious food. "A whole avocado with chevre, opal basil, micro mint, green tea sea salt & charred lemon" is a contender for the 2013 most self-indulgent menu item description award, but as usual it's going to be a crowded field. I'm probably old fashioned since apparently everyone else in this city seems to like these "inventive" menus, but I find it fairly silly and pretentious. They have rabbit and kangaroo burgers, but one made of beef is apparently too pedestrian. The food, when it did finally come out, was pretty good. But it had taken us so long to get it, while sitting at a very cramped communal table with waitstaff constantly brushing past us, that it was not an enjoyable meal experience. This place has only been open a week and it is going to be unbelieveably popular! It is a largish place next door to a gym with both an indoor and an outdoor section. The hot chocolate is good and the staff are really really friendly. I went in there to get a takeaway hot chocolate and the owner began chatting to me. What really impressed me was that he remembered my name a few days later when I went back in. This sort of thing is important and it keeps people coming back! The layout is pleasant, friendly and inviting. It seems like the sort of place where coffee snobs and regular people who wouldnt know the difference between good and bad coffee can both feel comfortable! I had a long mac and a piccolo and both were fab: Complex, smooth, and without a hint of bitterness. Just the way I like my coffee in fact. Service was friendly and speedy, and the open space (including a large covered patio out the front) was perfectly nice. The problem here is the food, and strangely, the bewildering menu: First off, it's a bit too big for it's britches. Your regular smashed avo on toast comes with "charred lemon" and "green tea salt". Yeah, whatever, guys. You keep telling yourself that your avocado with cheese, lemon, salt is more special than the other 400 Melbourne cafes that over-charge for a dish that can be prepared at home in two seconds flat. Than there's the "hoe cakes" (WHAT?) with coriander, caramel sauce and wasabi aioli. Over-reaching a bit here methinks? It doesn't sound appetising at all. We bypassed the above dishes in favour of a share plate with pumpkin and kibbeh salad, chorizo and olives, and crab toast with avocado mousse. 20 dollars. The portions were tiny and everything was a super greasy: I expected roast pumpkin with the salad, but instead it came with a stick of deep friend pumpkin puree. It was expensive and it didn't taste good. The coffee alone would have earned Industry Beans four stars from me but I have no patience with their pretentious menu, nor with their lacklustre and over-priced food. read more

Yum, yum. We got to Industry Beans in prime brunch time, and were warned of an anticipated 25 minute wait. The staff corral everyone waiting down the back, it feels weird but at least it is dry and they will happily bring you coffee while waiting. Once in its just a waiting game. We ended up waiting closer to 40 minutes but once we were seated the food came quickly. The range of food options is quite impressive- ranging from Asian inspired dishes, to the more traditional, to truffle mushrooms. The dishes are mainly savoury. Most menu items have optional extras- be aware, while the polenta chips are delicious, they are at $3 for a side, $1 each. I had the chicken burger which came with a side of quinoa and tomato salad, which o think has beetroot crisps and a kind of.. Beetroot pesto? The words escape me right now. I've only ever had espresso here, but what I've had has been delicious. The space is the real draw-card though. Every time we've been it's been quiet (mostly because we seem to visit at around 2pm), the high ceilings with exposed pipes are visually appealing, and the outdoor seating area is wonderful - we sat outside, surrounded by timber and foliage, with our coffees as rain plummeted down a few meters away. The long: We chose to sit outside, which is nicely set up with both and large small tables, accommodating all party sizes. Inside was bustling and full of energy. Our server was a nice chap who took time to explain the various coffee brewing methods (traditional espresso based (Americano/long black), as well as the new wave filter style coffees (pour over, gold mesh and aeropress). I ordered the aeropress and was quite happy with the quality of coffee. The menu had a nice array of brunch items, from your yoghurt muesli (healthy) to items to tickle your naughty side. The offerings sounded delicious and our group spent a fair bit of time choosing what we wanted. I settled on the fried chicken burger with quinoa salad, with polenta chips added to my order. I was not disappointed. The quality of the food was excellent, and portions left me more than full. So I honesty haven't tried the food - so I can't comment on that - this is about the coffee. Yes this place gives a feeling of pretentious. But that's just at the beginning. None of the workers here are pretentious, but rather they are quite lovely. I know one reviewer hated how friendly they were, but I really liked it. The friendliness of the staff is what took me from 4 to 5 stars. The coffee here is phenomenal. Yes they do have a menu for their coffee - but I am glad they did. I tried a few of the different roasts and the menu described each bean perfectly. So go off the menu if you are confused. The filthy smell on their glassware is caused by incorrectly cleaning dishes with eggs. Everyone else knows how to clean them properly. Do some research on the net or ask around for some help. It's really disgusting. Ordered two meals. One, fried duck eggs - sounded exciting but what a flavourless meal. The fritters were also below average. Food standards are so much higher today, this might have passed 10 years ago. Service was super friendly and surprisingly quick, given how many were there. But the hygiene levels are not pleasant and I can't recommend when there are so many better places to eat. And I think cleanliness is important. read more

Very popular little spot as there was a 15min wait for 2 of us to be seated. Coffee was definitely worth the wait! Coffee menu was daunting however the staff talk you through it and was great to try something different. I had one of the summer brew flat whites which was delicious. I also tried my first cold drip which at first I wasn't so keen on however I would highly recommend everyone try one. Can't wait to go back for another! Food menu is very different and is on the pricey side. Wouldn't go back for food however would go out of my way for their coffee any day. Also great rustic venue! read more

The people who work here are extremely prebtebcious and rude. I found this spot on a blog, I took a 35 minute walk to get there , very hungry and excited to enjoy a meal on the beautiful patio When I read the blog, it mentioned a $5 gift once you got the either towards food or a free coffee . The menu I's very pricy and I'm not a coffee drinker so I wanted to use the welcome credit toward a big beautiful salad. They told me I had to download the app first. As I struggled to download the app they then told me I could only use the app if I had a card...which I lost my wallet about a week ago and haven't been able to receive my cards because they have to be sent to my house in america. Then they told me I may be able to use PayPal . I struggled downloading their app because I have an "American" phone number so I want able to download it. They wouldn't give me the $5 off because I didnt have an American phone or a card to Match. Everyone should be able to access a $5 off welcome gift, but instead I walked away very disappointed. The customer is always right and they need to treat everyone equally, not just those with an Austrailian number or plastic card. Learn to have respect. Cheers and read more

Before I even researched the food or coffee here, I walked past and immediately 'Industry Beans' went to the top of my hit list. It's a beautiful space with outdoor and indoor options. The outdoor, our choice of perch, is abundant with grape climbers and gorgeous foliage. Perhaps it speaks volumes that I find the need to generously describe the surrounds, to over compensate for the food and coffee that frankly was a big miss. There are choices galore when considering coffee, I tried the house blend which was tepid at best and had a bitter finish. I ordered the overnight steel cut oats which were gluey and without flavour. My recommendation would be to get the basics right before accessorizing with foams and the like - I didn't finish the meal. My gal pal had the carrot and cauliflower fritters, again adorned with tricks and visual promises. She ate half and was of the same opinion - bland. It is with sadness that I give a place that looks so inviting such a low score. I hope to be writing a re-review should I venture there again, but with Grace and Hammer and Tong nearby, this seems unlikely. read more

We had to wait 15 minutes to get a table which is ok. The coffee was good but the chicken burger is really average.
