I recently learned about barre classes in the Trib: http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/135452903.html and I was really intrigued, so when I saw a Groupon offer last week, I purchased it. I experienced my first BarreAmped class today! And to think...I thought my yoga classes were a workout! I may not sweat as much in a barre class, but holy pain in my derrière!!! I was a dancer in my younger years, so I felt right at home at the barre, but still found the class to be difficult (in a good way). Barre is a blend of yoga, pilates & ballet--the perfect combo to nurture a strong, lean body.
Tina has a very positive, upbeat attitude that helps you work through the pain and shakes...as she says, "You've gotta shake to change". She watches everyone closely and corrects positioning when she feels the need--she really wants everyone to learn the movements properly the first time so you get the most out of them (and so you don't hurt yourself). It's also helpful that she gives positive reinforcement by pointing out when our form is good and when she notices we were working hard--it makes it easier to keep going.
The studio is small, but very clean and inviting. Coat hooks line the wall near the entrance, so you can hang your things and your belongings are within sight during class. They have a nice little seating area and changing rooms around the corner, as well as a much needed water cooler. There's a separate pilates room, which today was home Tina's 3 adorable & well-behaved spaniels--she happened to be moving today, so they decided they wanted to come to class too :)
After one class, I'm already hooked! You should come try it out too--$20 for a single class ($15 if you're a student)
They have a shared lot around back, and there's plenty of free street parking right next to the studio. read more
