One of the biggest highlights of my visit was the matcha latte. Madeleine uses DONA First Flush Ceremonial Matcha, and you can really taste the quality of the matcha in the finished drink. DONA sources its matcha from small producers in Japan, and the matcha is hand-plucked and traditionally stone-milled. The latte had a beautiful, vibrant green color and a smooth, creamy texture, with a noticeable matcha flavor that wasn't hidden behind too much sweetness. It had a nice balance of earthy, toasty, and slightly nutty flavors with a clean finish. The heart latte art on top was also a beautiful touch. As someone who really enjoys matcha, I appreciated that they're using a quality matcha rather than treating it as an afterthought on the drink menu. I paired the matcha with one of their savory crêpes with ham and egg. The crêpe was thin, tender, and nicely cooked, with plenty of filling and a perfectly runny egg that brought everything together. It also came with a fresh side salad, which made the whole plate feel balanced and substantial without being too heavy. Of course, I also had to check out the macarons. The selection here is impressive, especially because they aren't afraid to get creative with the flavors. I saw everything from strawberry and peach cobbler to coconut raspberry and chocolate-covered cherry, along with some really unexpected savory-inspired flavors like elote.
