Anytime I hear or see the word "Michelin" associated with any restaurant, I get all excited especially if they're located near me. This was the case with Baikohken, a chain of ramen shops from Hokkaido with a handful of international locations including this sole US location in Waikiki. My impetuous reading had me thinking they were awarded a Michelin STAR, but turns out it was a Michelin PLATE rating, a brand new category born in 2016 to award restaurants that "simply serve good food". Still prestigious but nothing like obtaining a star. ATMOSPHERE: Located in the Waikiki Yokocho, seating is very limited. A big 10-top communal seats diners around a large, artificial cherry blossom tree. A small counter seats 5, and a few low tops seat 10 more. The place was clean and organized. MENU: Ramen, cold ramen, rice bowls, apps, beer, sake, whiskey. FOOD: Kimuchi - $4.00 AKA Korean kim chee, in a Japanese restaurant? Okay... And, they did an excellent job on it! The flavoring and spices were perfect! Gyoza - $6.00 The five pork-filled dumplings had thin wrappers that could've been seared more but had great taste. No gyoza sauce was available but you can make your own creation with the table condiments of shoyu, chili oil and vinegar. Shoyu Ramen - $12.99 So this was the infamous broth that garnered them a Michelin Plate mention. The combined dual broths of "animal & seafood essences" (pork & chicken bones with dried fish & seaweed) made for a beefy-porky-shoyu taste that had a subtle medium depth; definitely in my top five of best shoyu broths. The curly noodles were perfectly chewy and plentiful. Standard toppings were shoyu-soaked chashu that were a bit tough, and shoyu-soaked "huge" bamboo shoots which were way thicker and softer than your mainstream version. I added bean sprouts that were mixed with white onions and minced pork for $2.50, and a halved ajitama for $2.00. Highly recommended for the shoyu broth fan. SERVICE: The place was full even at 10pm but four spots on the communal opened up as we arrived. The server quickly cleared and clean the area for us and got us started. Food delivery was quick and we were checked on throughout our meal. Greetings and farewells were plentiful in the Japanese tradition. TIPS: Even though they close at midnight, last call was announced at 11pm. By 11:20pm, the chefs were leaving the restaurant. 10% kama'aina discount. 15% auto tip added to all checks. OVERALL: Do they deserved the Michelin Plate rating? I'd say yes as the three items we had were really good. read more

My group chose Baikohken over a handful of other ramen options, though I'm not sure we knew they had ties to a restaurant in Japan that earned a Michelin Guide spot for their bowl of noodles. Their claim to fame - broth made up pork, chicken, fish, & seaweed - was difficult for my tastebuds to comprehend, & in the end, I concluded that I didn't like that specific mix of "essences." I enjoyed the tender noodles, curly & voluminous, in my order of Butter & Corn Shoyu Ramen (~$16.) For $2, I added extra menma (bamboo shoots), but found their chunkiness tough & hard to eat. We were craving a bowl of ramen and thought this place would be good since it was "Michelin star" and the line was long. Line was long cause it's a small place but honestly it wasn't that good. In fact it was way too salty, the noodles were super al dente (like it could have cooked for another 2 minutes), soup was like warm (mainly because they take your order while you are in line, and as soon as they seat you from the waiting line your bowl of noodles arrives in its luke warm salty state. Been wanting to try this Michelin rated place. Went on the Monday before Christmas and there was no line at lunchtime. Perfect! We each ordered a different type of broth- shio, miso and shoyu. I also added corn and butter to my miso ramen. There were a lot of different flavors in the broth and by adding fresh garlic (on the table) to it, the flavor was over the top! The shio was the least favorite (too bland according to one person), the miso with butter and corn plus garlic was the winner. Noodles were good but I've had better. Also we found the broth to be very salty. All in all the ramen was good but maybe I was expecting a lot because of the Michelin rating. The prices were a bit high for ramen too although we got a 10% kamaaina discount. AND... we didn't realize that they automatically add a 15% service charge so we tipped on top of that. Wandered into this place because they offer a vegetable ramen and my fiance is vegetarian. However, it is important to note that the broth is not vegetarian. After ordering, I realized that their broth was Michelin star rated. When the food came out, they had accidentally put meat into my fiances bowl, so the waitress sent it back. It would've been fine if they brought it out to us, he would've just picked out the meat since the broth was meat based anyways, it wasn't a big deal. By sending it back, it took 10 more minutes for his bowl to come back out. The noodles were pretty good, they are thicker noodles just the way I like. The chashu was okay, not very flavorful and didn't have good texture. The soup wasn't as good as I expected either. Being Michelin rated, I expected something mind blowing, but instead just got pretty good. Overall, this place is just pretty good. They had decent service, tasty food, and reasonable price. Ooh I think I found a new favorite ramen place. Unfortunately one of my favorites closed up and I've been trying to find a new place. I really didn't know about this place until I was watching some program on tv. I guess it was just a coincidence that it happened to be on. They were previewing all the ramen restaurants in Yokocho Alley. I've been to the Yelp Elite event to Yokocho but we got a sampling of the different types of food and drink there and not just ramen. At that event the ramen we tried was the volcano ramen. Anyways on that tv show I was watching, they said there are four ramen places. Did you know that some of those ramen restaurants are world famous? There were two on the program that really caught my attention. I had to bookmark them so that I could there when I had time. Well today was the lucky day. We went to Yokocho and I told my friends about the different types of ramen each location offered. The two that I was interested was the Tsukumen one, which is the dipping noodle, and Baikohken. That tv program said that they have Baikohken in Japan and people wait in lines to come to this place. It also said that it was famous for its shoyu ramen. I'm pretty plain when it comes to choosing broth, shoyu is my favorite. So I'm glad that the consensus was to go to Baikohken. The broth on my ramen was Ah-mazing. I've never tasted anything like it. It was different because most times when you order shoyu based broth it's pretty dark but this one was kind of clear. I just kept drinking and drinking the soup. The noodles were good and it complemented the soup well. My friends got the shio ramen and they liked it as well. I was so excited about how good it was and I came home and bragged to my husband about it. He wasn't as excited about it, probably because I didn't bring him home any leftovers, haha. read more

My favorite place to eat in the Waikiki Yokocho! There's about 4 other ramen places and this is my favorite. Parking Usually there's flare rate parking, leave before 6pm at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza above Waikiki Yokocho. Best deal in town during the weekends. Plus you can take your time and walk off the food you just ate after you're done. Restaurant The place is clean but not the best for large parties. The staff is always friendly and they do offer Kamaaina (local resident) discount during the lunch but not sure on the dinner menu. Food You can't beat the quality of the food here. We love the miso ramen, especially with the buttered corn on top of it. The dumpling are good too. Not my favorite but we still order it as part of our order. The corned croquettes are a must try. Two huge pieces and it's so delicious. If I wasn't craving ramen, I'd probably order this with a side of rice or something. Oh and don't forget to order an egg on top of your ramen!!! read more

Taking the first bite of hyped-up, delicious-smelling and delicious-looking ramen was probably the most anti-climactic moment I've had at Yokocho so far... Right across of Tsujita Ramen, Baikohken is on the right side of Yokocho towards the back of the restaurant row. The restaurant is spacious and very clean. Now back to that moment of utter disappointment. I had ordered the Miso Ramen and my mom got the Shoyu Ramen. The broth was a little tasty but mostly salty and bland. I expected a nicer Miso flavor but didn't get that. The broth was 5/10 in taste. My mother's Shoyu Ramen was actually better than mines. At least it had flavor... The garnishes for both were alright. Miso Ramen came with a heaping amount of bean sprouts, a good amount of green onions, pork, and bamboo shoots. The pork was mediocre - alright flavor but the cut and overall quality was not impressive at all. My biggest gripe is with their bamboo shoots. The slices were annoyingly big. Bamboo shoots should be sliced thinner to compliment the flavor of the ramen, not to overwhelm your mouth and overpower the broth flavor. These big slices of shoots felt sloppy and as if they were plopped into the ramen with no care at all. Prices in Yokocho are generally high. Here particularly, they are indeed quite high. $13.99 for a bowl of ramen, on top of being disappointing is ridiculous. Portions were good -- filling you up -- but that's only if you actually finish your bowl. Oh and I will mention a service fee automatically added to your bill. The staff was OK but really, I can't even remember because nothing stood out. So yes, you HAVE to pay the included tip. Don't be surprised if your bill is no less than $30-$35 for 2 people. However there is a Kama'aina discount for 10%. But don't let that fool you. I'm a cheapstake and even that discount won't entice me back. Alright, alright -- their ramen is okay. Nothing I would ever rave about or pay another $13.99 for. They don't have many redeeming qualities for me so you may want to try for yourself to form your own opinion. We were pretty excited to try this new food hall out since last few times they were closed due to Covid and renovations. Sadly we we're disappointed.. we decided to try this place since we wanted to give business as it was empty and the other stalls decently had people. As some people stated for the spicy miso ramen, it lacked body and savory ness. Toppings such as the bamboo had absolutely no seasoning. The only good thing about the dish was that it was actually spicy. I honestly tried to like this place and enjoy a simple bowl but it just didn't. Sadly the service for us at least was mediocre. Another interesting ramen place here in Hawaii. This one has a medium curly noodle that evokes Ichiban noodles. I had the shio ramen and with the addition of garlic and pepper it came alive. I liked the soft char siu but did not like the bamboo shoots (menma). Although they were thick, they were tough. Overall a decent ramen and you get kamaaina discount if you show your ID. Coming from an area (LA) where tonkotsu broth reigns supreme, I was ecstatic to try a restaurant with reputable shoyu broth. Baikohken did not disappoint. My regular shoyu bowl, with an added side of wakame, was extraordinarily delicious, deep and porky-tasting without being too fatty or rich. Toppings and noodles were great as well, without being stand-out, but there is no doubt that the broth here is worth your while. It's easy to pick a broth apart--complaints that it's too salty, too fatty, too rich, not rich enough, are frequent refrains. But I found it hard to find any fault with Baikohken's shoyu. It's simply a bowl of comfort, that I hope to have again next time I return to Honolulu. read more

This wasn't overwhelmingly amazing, but it was very good. Came here because it was the first stop when you walk downstairs of the Waikiki shopping plaza. Prices are little more pricier than comprisable size, but they offer 10% kamaaina discount and an inclusive 15% service charge which I assume was the tip. The chasu don $7 was about the size of my hand (I have small child like hands), but still filling. It was flavorful and tender. Also ordered the spring special "Niku Niku ramen" $19. It was hearty and had a lot of flavor and the meat was perfect. I just don't like the price and the size. Another onolicious lunch at the Waikiki Yokocho! Been wanting to try Baikohken for a while now. Ordered the Shoyu Ramen with an add-on ajitama egg. Be sure to ask for the Kama'aina discount when ordering. Service fee (tip) will be included on the check. Enjoyed the bowl, but actually thought it was a little too salty for me. The shoyu kinda overwhelmed the complexities of the broth. Liked the curliness & chewiness of the noodles and the melt-in-your-mouth chashu. I thought the menma was interesting. It was scary thick, but not fibrous at all. Tender with a nice crunch (if that makes any sense.) Maybe prefer Tsujita and Bario, but I would definitely come back for more. On the flight to Honolulu, I watched a video featuring the four ramen restaurants in Yokocho Food Mall. Each had they own style, but Baikohken looked interesting given its history. It was established in Hokkaido in 1969 and was Michelin rated in 2012 and 2017. After checking into our hotel, we headed to Baikohken for lunch. The small restaurant was full except for four seats at the counter. The waitress asked if we wanted to sit there, but we opted to wait for a table. After a ten minute wait, our table was ready and the chef even came out to apologize for our wait. Baikohken is known for curly noodles, which holds the broth well, homemade chashu, where the pork is marinated overnight in homemade soy sauce, and large bamboo shoots seasoned in the homemade soy sauce and the combined "double soup broth" of "animal & seafood essences" (pork and chicken bones and fish & seaweed). I opted for their signature ramen, which is the Butter and Corn Ramen in soy broth. The waitress said the miso broth was good option too. Broth was flavorful, though not as intense as others; noodles had a nice chewy texture; three large pieces of bamboo, which were soft; and chashu, which were tasty and not tough. What makes this dish different is the corn and the patty of butter. The butter melted into the broth gives it a richer taste. The other ramen bowl ordered amongst our group was the Shio Ramen with an added egg. The broth had a mild salt flavor. Service was friendly from the wait staff in getting us seated and answering questions about the menu. The chef welcomed us and thanked us when we departed. If you like shoyu based broth, Baikohken is a very good choice. read more

Sweet corn, sliced pork, fresh bamboo, &bean sprouts swimming in a rich broth nuanced with shoyu or miso...aaaaahhh...Such a soothing and tasty combination! The ramen here is very tasty and to top it off they add a pat of butter on each order to give it that sweet unctuous mouth feel. The pork was very tender and they import fresh bamboo from Japan to add a different textural component: chewy yet crunchy at the same time. I challenged my eating partners to slurp their noodles to have the full experience of ramen. I guess I was the only noisy eater today... I think the proper slurp adds a component of cooling the hot broth so you can taste it better. Contrary to what I used to think, ramen broth needs to have a slightly salty but not too salty taste so that the noodles can absorb some of the saltiness. What I really don't like is when the broth so too salty and you get that stinging feeling as you eat. This broth is just right. We also tried the croquettes with tonkatsu sauce. They arrived piping hot and were very tasty. Not greasy at all and a good side dish with ramen. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful. Both ramen were tasty but I preferred the Shoyu butter corn ramen. The Shoyu ramen had big bamboo shoots imported from Japan, corn, green onions, two slices of meat and a nice chunk of butter on the top. I also tried the corquette. It was yummy! There are two generous size pieces in a serving. Price: A ramen bowl price averages around $15. They do offer a Kama'aina discount to Hawaii residents just show ID. They do a service charge of 15%. Overpriced. Unappealing. First and foremost this is NOT bario ramen. There are four bloody ramen places in this little corner so pick it wisely. Second all are expensive but a base ramen will cost you $13 without adding anything - and if you add it'll be pricey in a hurry. Third their presentation is ridiculous. Their bamboo shoots were cut like wedges of cucumber making them very unpleasant to eat. Their butter corn is literally cold corn w a huge slab of butter on it, how does that make any sense? Also any additions will be on the side, don't bother asking for the stuff inside. The ramen itself is decent but I can think of a dozen places from LA to SD that do better and cheaper. And finally the price. Dear God. Two bowls of ramen, two of their plates to add things to the ramen, one order of gyoza cost a whopping $62. That's robbery especially for ok ramen. Baikohken is located in the Waikiki Yokocho that is located on the bottom floor of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza. Many of the restaurants have originated in Osaka, Japan. I have been to Osaka, and the Yokocho really has that authentic Japan feel. I ordered the shoyu ramen and a side order of gyoza. First of all, the shoyu ramen came out pretty quickly. The broth was really tasty. There was a good amount of noodles. There was two large pieces of pork what was quite flavorful. I think it was a really good deal for $12. The gyoza was also tasty. It paired nicely with the ramen. However, while tasty, they were a little small. The restaurant also give a 10% Kamaaina Discount to locals. Overall, this is a solid ramen shop, and one of the best ones in Oahu. read more

Baikohken is one of the ramen shops inside Waikiki Yokocho. There are a lot of different things you can eat but I chose to try this one per a friend's recommendation. The shop is located in the back of Waikiki Yokocho right across the Bank of Hawaii ATM. It's walk-in only and the shop is small but I was seated very quickly during the 7pm hour on a weekday. I'm a big fan of shio broth so I went right for the shio ramen. The shio ramen was delicious and it was a good amount of food but the prices are high. The parking options for eating at Waikiki Yokocho aren't that great. It's a parking structure across the street and it's $7 flat rate. I would recommend parking in an alternate lot such as International Marketplace or Royal Hawaiian Center and getting validation with a $10 purchase in one of the shops there instead. There isn't a lot of seating and it can get a little confusing as things get shuffled about but that being said it's a food court! The food is delicious! Got Shio and shoyu ramen, a chashu over rice, and some edamame. The ramens came with Chashu and some bamboo. I ordered extra egg, corn, and bamboo. It was approx 70 dollars for the two of us. One beer. One small dessert to share. The broth was awesome. Both of them were rich and felt velvety. The ramen texture was perfect and the add ins were fine. So there is this place in Waikiki that hides a parlor of nothing but ramen joints, to the locals it has always been there but to a visitor I would walk by this place countless times never knowing it is there. If you want your fix for anything or everything ramen in Waikiki this would be the spot you want to visit I stopped by with a friend and sampled this place ramen back in 8/06/2018 for a lunch bowl of their Shoyu Ramen with hard boiled egg. We sat in front of the prep area, so there is a wall and then condiments, chopsticks, salts and spices, napkins and small side clean side dishes, when you sit down you can see any of the action of the cooks doing there work, you see a granite wall, felt like everything is cubed off, there are other tables for larger groups of 8 max at one table the rest are for small couples. The menu is pretty straight forward 12 pictures of all the ramen they offer, one option for their cold dry ramen, 4 options for there don bowl (meat and rice bowl), appetizers like gyoza (fried dumpling), edamame, hokkaido croquette (deep fried potato), then beverages which offer beer, sake, whiskey then some non-alcoholic drinks. The three main ramens they offer are the Shio Ramen which is mild salt flavor, the Miso Ramen which is the soybean paste flavor and the Shoyu Ramen which is the soy flavor. I sampled there miso ramen, on a rate from 1-10 this hard 7 I will need to come back and try more of there bowls minus the veggie bowls of ramen lol. The Butter & Corn Ramen also stood out but since I frequent Hawaii I can come back for that as well as the chasu ramen lol. the ramen flavor for the miso was good, saltier then i'm use to, noodles springy, tasted fresh made, the presentation was more meh the flavor was spot on, I would order this bowl again. Allot of the shops here were all in japanese, kinda felt authentic and at the same time overwhelming if you don't speak or read japanese haha. I ordered the Seared Chashu Don, which was super tasty. It was a smallish bowl, so my wife gave me some of her Chashu Ramen Soy Sauce dish. The Chashu with the ramen was very tender and the broth was good. The noodles were cooked just right for my taste, or as my wife put it "qq". As an extra side we ordered some of their fried chicken Hokkaido style. I made a small mixture of hot oil and soy sauce which I thought went well with the tender chicken. I would certainly order the Seared Chashu Don again, and try another ramen variety to compare to the Soy Sauce one. read more
