The boards outside show a few interesting specials to tempt you inside - rose lamb hotpot with garlic bread, vegetable stew as well as some breakfast-type options of scrambled eggs. Inside it's nicely decorated - not too over the top with the Frenchness but there's a lovely chandelier, loads of seating, and a generally pretty cosy vibe. There's a deli section which has a chilled stacked with cheeses and meat, as well as pre-made croissants and baguettes. There's also a shelf of jarred French delights like marinated garlic, truffled mushrooms, terrine, goose fat etc, plus fresh breads, quiches and Christmas hampers. As you can probably tell, they've managed to pack a lot into this deli! I was keen to try the Croque Monsieur so asked to get one takeaway. They offered to heat it up for me but seeing as I wasn't going straight home I got it cold. They wrapped it in foil for me and gave me heating instructions which was handy. While I was waiting for my sandwich I gave into the temptation on the counter and grabbed a couple of pastries for £1.50 each (pastel de nata). Now - confession time - I did actually buy two of these and one was meant to be for my husband, but I ate them both. Woops. They were just divine, the crispy caramelised top was too much for me to resist. And I don't even have a sweet tooth. I also got a wedge of Gruyere (who can resist a cheese counter?) which wasn't bad value at £19/kg, and off I went on my way. I warmed up my sandwich in the oven when I got home and can confirm that it was just as delicious as it looks - cheesy, creamy, crispy and delicious. Yum. I want another one right now actually.

Then when I discovered they sell one of my favourite French dishes ever, the humble Croque Monsieur, I knew I had to get myself down there. Popped in for a flying visit today and I definitely wasn't disappointed - it was bigger than I was expecting and was definitely a nice, cosy place to come into out of the cold! It was pretty busy considering it was about 3pm on a Sunday and had such a lovely atmosphere, really chilled out and just seemed like a good place to relax. I went up to the counter to place my order (to take away) and was told it'd be 4 minutes, nice and specific! I had a wee nosey while I was waiting and all the produce looks so very tasty. They had French cheeses and saucissons, as well as quiches, pastries, bread...among other things - mmm! The staff were very attentive and friendly, can't fault the service at all. The Croque Monsieur itself was totally delicious! I was determined to make it home before I ate it but I ended up scoffing half of it when I got in my car cause it smelled so good!! They also had the Moulin Rouge soundtrack playing when I was in which I loved, that's a plus for me! Definitely going to go back (hopefully sooner rather than later!) so I'll write an update on what the sit-in service is like too - can't imagine it'll be bad though!

It was a great start to a Saturday which held a long and tedious bicycle repair in our future! There was just a fantastic selection of fillings and breads. Everything was lovely and fresh, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating when ordering something that didn't exist on the menu. The prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed - I loved the radio station selection, if indeed it was radio! For a wee sandwich bar, they are definitely ticking all the boxes, and they also do pastas and other hot foods. If you're ever near the Victoria Infirmary or the Battlefield area in general, this is probably the best place to stop by and refuel.

Gizzi opened just along from the very recently closed Coffee Station today (Monday 2 February 2015) so I popped in for a very quick visit. It's a narrow space and yet they have quite a bit of seating. At first I thought this was just a coffee/cake place, but somehow they're also doing pasta and pizza. Pasta such as lasagne, penne arrabiata and macaroni for around £5 eat in. The stone baked pizza options are also pretty simple: margherita, inferno, Italian sausage and misto and again, around the £5-£6 mark. As I was just making a brief visit I grabbed a couple of pieces of raspberry jamaretti (yes, that's amaretti biscuit with jam in it) which I'm going to eat for dessert tonight. The guy serving me was super lovely and welcoming, and seemed busting with happiness about their first day. I can't wait to pay it another visit.

When I first moved to Shawlands over ten years ago, I always walked past this place as it looked like a basic greasy spoon. About a year ago I finally went in as I fancied a hangover roll with something better than slice (square sausage to you Weegies) on it. I was shocked at how good the Salsiccia and roasted peppers on focaccia was. Then they bloody closed down! Thankfully this was just for a long overdue re-fit, and they were back open in a few weeks. What a difference! Having now tried the pizza, I can say the decor now lives up to the grub! Across a half dozen visits plus numerous takeouts, I will say that the standard is very good for the grilled sandwiches, salads, soups and pasta. The coffee is Italian Aroma supplied, reasonably priced and above the (admittedly rather poor) general standard for Glasgow. Service is always warm and friendly, a definite benefit of a family with a long experience in the trade. My usual gripe as for pretty much everywhere in Scotland, tables could be cleared-wiped-reset a bit faster, but this is from a used-to-be-in-the-trade viewpoint, and have never seen a customer inconvenienced by it. Now the pizza. Let me qualify this; I have eaten several kilos of pizza from Bella Napoli over the years, and even ate from the Crolla's previous premises at Italmania in the city centre (showing my age?). Domenico Crolla has justifiably won loads of international awards as a pizzaolo, and will probably continue to do so. Well, the pizza at Gizzi is hand made from scratch too, by seasoned Italian hands, and the results are just as good. Super thin, with random pockets of crisply bubbled dough and the odd deliciously chewy bit, everything you could want proper pizza to be! Makes your face and your belly smile, and causes strange noises of longing to elicit from those sharing a table with you. Add to this the happier, friendlier atmosphere in Gizzi, and I know where I would rather spend my cash. Other reviews have already mentioned that Bakery47 supply the pastries, so no need to go into detail their, suffice to say they are uniformly excellent. Barring some catastrophe, they have a customer for life.

The range and quality of sandwiches is good, the pizzas and nachos are really nice, the staff are fantastic. They've done up their back garden and it's now a lovely place to sit out when it's sunny, with proper comfy seats and tables. Since we started going back, we've actually met some of the other ex-Beanscene regulars who also stopped going around the same time we did, but who are starting to go back now too. And it's starting to feel more like part of the Shawlands community again - they occasionally have local musicians in, one time we were in there was a guy with a guitar, just singing a few songs in the corner, and it's the regular meeting of a bunch of gamers who sit up the back and play board games. My only tiny gripes are that the quality of the coffee can vary depending on which barista is making it and I'd like to see a few more evening food options, but Norval has really started to hit its stride as a great value coffee shop which is becoming a central part of the Shawlands community once again.

I love that they hit brought the jug of maple syrup to the table, usually you have to beg borrow and steal at places to get more! Ben got a side of macaroni cheese because, why not. And he enjoyed it thoroughly, just the right amount of creaminess to the cheese. Very reasonably priced, great food, lovely staff. I was warmly welcomed and shown the menu and told what was available today. I was there in the afternoon which meant they'd sold out of quite a bit of stuff - but that shows they're popular and making stuff fresh, which is great! I ended up ordering the full breakfast (£4.95) and asked for the black pudding and beans to be left off. It didn't take long (even though it was freshly cooked) and was a generous plate of food. I loved the roasted tomatoes, bacon and sausage which were all lovely. I don't really like scrambled egg but overall it was a tasty breakfast which was just the afternoon perk I needed. I stayed for a while doing some work and they kindly offered me their wifi code which was nice. The owners are really lovely folk who really want to make their customers comfortable and well looked after which I appreciated. As the name says, there is a huge range of cakes too but I didn't try any on this visit. I'll be back soon though as I want to try their soup!

I usually view coleslaw in cafes with suspicion as they are often sour and vinegary and come straight out of a catering pack. This coleslaw was made on the premises tasting of fresh veg and creamy mayonnaise. Regulars popped in and out, on first name terms with the soup man and cake lady confirming this wee cafe's role in the community. Oh and the coffee was great as well.

When our food came out, I was a bit put off the way they piled the veggie haggis on top of my sweet french toast, but I ate it first and got on with it. I made my boyfriend try the veggie haggis, and much to my surprise, although he said he'd never actually order it, he didn't hate it. I quite enjoyed it and the massive amount they gave me actually filled me up before I even started on my french toast. The french toast was a massive portion. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but the slices of toast were really thick and perfectly cooked. The wee pot of syrup that came along could have been a bit bigger, but that's just me being a greedy American wanting my french toast covered in syrup. I would have also loved some powdered sugar (icing sugar as they call it here) and it would have been the best. Needless to say, it was still really great and super filling. I ended up giving a piece to my boyfriend unable to finish the three pieces. The boyfriend quite liked his eggs, beans and toast, but didn't enjoy his coffee one bit. I loved the presentation of the eggs - generous with a lovely rocket salad on the side and an added side which I think was a potato scone (I ate it too quickly to remember properly). The only reason I have to dock a star is that the muffins were burnt in parts which I know sometimes happen but my god I hate a burnt muffin. The rest of the dish was just lovely though and I really enjoyed it. Prices are reasonable for the area, and as I said, the staff are really friendly. They don't seem to have a huge deli section (as mentioned in some other reviews) but that wouldn't put me off going back for lunch or breakfast. Also, it looks like they don't have a customer toilet but if you ask the staff, they'll point you behind the counter and past the kitchen down the stairs.
