Loafers is one of the nicest wee cafes in the South side. A mark of any good cafe is the amount of…read morefamiliar faces you see popping in each day and there are plenty here. The coffee is good, the sandwiches are lovely and filling, but best of all is the soup! My boyfriend claims it is the finest soup in Glasgow and, true enough, be it a broth or a blend, it's all good. Plus they give you a cut up baguette for dipping. Not just a piece of bread... a baguette! A word of warning though, when you first go to Loafers, be careful what you order to drink because that is what you'll get served from then on. I don't particularly like Fanta but that is my lot in life.

I ordered the soup and sandwich deal which was £5.50. Seemed reasonable for a local cafe. However, what arrived at the table was the biggest disappointment ever. The lentil soup was really tasteless and the vegetables in it were like mush. The only thing I could liken it to was tinned lentil soup from the 1980s. So much so I literally couldn't eat it despite being really hungry. It was accompanied by a peri peri chicken and cheese baguette. The chicken peri peri was cold cubes of reconstituted chicken with a slimy cold peri peri sauce on it. It was very very low grade/quality food that left me feeling quite squeamish for the rest of the day. It is inexcusable to serve up such low quality for these prices. Despite telling the waitress/owner that the soup was inedible, there was no offer of a discount which leaves me thinking that she was satisfied with the quality of what she was serving up. It's a real shame.

As a sandwich shop how can you hope to be memorable? Follow these rules:…read more1. Be accessible - just off Battlefield and near a big fat hospital helps. 2. Offer a selection - different types of bread/rolls, diverse fillings and dressings and two soups de jour 3. Have an interesting daily special - tempt people with value for money and impress them with execution 5. Make to order - assemble in front of the customer and ask them what they want 6. Be quick - there's always a queue at lunchtime but you never wait for long 7. Repeat steps 1-6 consistently In other words, follow the Light Bite formula. It was a great start to a Saturday which held a long and tedious bicycle repair in our future! There was just a fantastic selection of fillings and breads. Everything was lovely and fresh, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating when ordering something that didn't exist on the menu. The prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed - I loved the radio station selection, if indeed it was radio! For a wee sandwich bar, they are definitely ticking all the boxes, and they also do pastas and other hot foods. If you're ever near the Victoria Infirmary or the Battlefield area in general, this is probably the best place to stop by and refuel.

This wee café came to my attention through twitter (they followed me, I decided I needed to visit =…read moreso simple!). Even though I'm a south sider, I don't really visit this area very often so I don't know what it replaced but it's a lovely, cosy space - couches, tables, lots of space and very bright inside. I was warmly welcomed and shown the menu and told what was available today. I was there in the afternoon which meant they'd sold out of quite a bit of stuff - but that shows they're popular and making stuff fresh, which is great! I ended up ordering the full breakfast (£4.95) and asked for the black pudding and beans to be left off. It didn't take long (even though it was freshly cooked) and was a generous plate of food. I loved the roasted tomatoes, bacon and sausage which were all lovely. I don't really like scrambled egg but overall it was a tasty breakfast which was just the afternoon perk I needed. I stayed for a while doing some work and they kindly offered me their wifi code which was nice. The owners are really lovely folk who really want to make their customers comfortable and well looked after which I appreciated. As the name says, there is a huge range of cakes too but I didn't try any on this visit. I'll be back soon though as I want to try their soup!

The day's soups were spinach and lentil, and chorizo and tomato which was more of a stew. The spinach and lentil was delicious, rib sticking thick and tasty, tasty. My chicken salad sandwich on thick wholemeal contained proper roast chicken. The accompanying side salad had a balsamic dressing and included ribbons of carrot along with the usual ingredients. I usually view coleslaw in cafes with suspicion as they are often sour and vinegary and come straight out of a catering pack. This coleslaw was made on the premises tasting of fresh veg and creamy mayonnaise. Regulars popped in and out, on first name terms with the soup man and cake lady confirming this wee cafe's role in the community. Oh and the coffee was great as well.
