One-of-a-kind experience! I was recently in Austin, dying for some Indian food, and this place HIT!…read moreThe atmosphere was friendly and inviting. We had the best server, our little group quickly vibed with her! Of everything we sampled, the Samosa Chat and Sag Chicken were my absolute favorite - the spice was on point. Because our group enjoyed spicy foods, our server generously brought us out a unique New Year's drink, and let me tell you, I need to have that on the regular! All in all, a great restaurant!

I tried the Ulavacharu soup--absolutely delicious. It's main ingredient is horse gram, which apparently is in the legume family. It wasn't like any soup I've had before, so description is a bit tough. It was fairly spicy to start with, but less so as I kept eating it. The only things I could identify was ground up horse gram, some sweet onions, and some thinly shaved ginger, but it had a lot of complexity. Highly recommend that and the rose milk (especially if you need some relief from the spiciness when you start out.) I had a little bit of my friend's butter chicken sauce, and that was excellent too. More heavily tomato-based than I'm used to, but a lot of depth of flavor. I'd happily order that in the future. I can't wait to come back and try their buffet when my diet restrictions are over :) Service was great. I asked if a few of the menu items have coconut in them since I'm allergic, and our server double checked with the kitchen for me and was very nice about it. Really pretty dining room as well. The location isn't as central as I'd like, but that does make it easy to find parking in the lot. Definitely recommend!

The kebabs are the true highlight...juicy, flavorful, and grilled to perfection. The portions are quite large as the hubs and I shared a wrap. We were sufficiently full after eating the chicken tikka wrap. Interestingly, the wrap came in a Shawarma King packaging with their contact phone number. So, I assume that Usta staff are sub-contracting from Shawarma King. Usta also has freshly baked bread and classic sides like hummus and rice paired with the main dishes. The restaurant has a homey, lived in feel. It has a few middle eastern artifacts sprinkled throughout the restaurant. The menu offers a wide variety of options, from Iraqi and Adana kebabs to shawarma and traditional Middle Eastern plates, so there are food items for both first timers and regulars who want to explore beyond the basics. They also serve flatbreads where you can have two different toppings. The food focus is on bold, traditional flavors rather than modern takes on middle eastern foods. On the desserts front, they have an assortment of desserts and several sections of ice cream. I had the baklava, which was surprisingly delicious...it was not eye-squinting sweet like a standard baklava. It was crunchy, flavorful, and had nuts that were substantial. Layla, my server, was so super sweet and welcoming. She pointed out that Usta provides its customers free tea. How cool is that? I cannot remember last time I received a free drink.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, suitable for a place nice enough for a family/friend gathering. The service is friendly and reassures wanting to provide an enjoyable meal. The best thing we had were the veggie samosas, really liked those. The dal soup was alright, lacking flavor and watery. The onion pakoda was exactly what you'd think, fried onion strings. I've had way better Shahi korma, tikka masala and chicken biryai and the jalapeño naan was interesting. It was just plain bread with jalapeños on it, no garlic or butter or anything else. Maybe I'm missing something and this is just part of the fusion, but it was not doing it for me. They do have a good happy hour if you want to come try them out!

We had our choice of outdoor or indoor seats, and chose a spot outside on their wrap around patio. Tables were a bit wobbly and cement was cracked/uneven, but there was a charm to it. Our order was taken promptly! We got a lamb samosa (half off appetizers M-F from 4-7pm!), a couple of curries, a garlic naan, and a mango lassi. The curries were a little under-spiced and the lassi was a touch over sweet, but the garlic naan was amazing and the basmati rice was as perfectly cooked as any I've ever had! Portions were a touch small, but prices were fair. Our server was also incredibly kind and warm. I will definitely come back to try some other items off their expansive menu!
