The staff took our order (menu is in Catalan-and it's a build your own style place) and they were very helpful and insightful. They made a recommendation based on our selection and were honest if a particular item didn't go well with the rest. When the order came out, the meat was juicy, the bun nice and warm but yet crispy on the outside and their home made ketchup was one for the books! It was typical late night in Barcelona. I just watched the parade of "Fire beasts and dragon walk" down La Rambla. Packed and sweaty, wondering when someone would be brave enough to pick pocket me. The crowds of people jammed from end to end, the supply of oxygen was diminishing. Looked for food I stumble upon "Bacoa". Why does that name sound familiar? " I have seen this place on Yelp!" Barcelona as some great food everywhere you turn but the folks at Bacoa saw something was lacking in the gourmet-ish burger bar and created something that frankly could be exported to USA. While we have some very good burger places around me, the options, the ability to customize make this place great. This is a great option for lunch. My friends (vegetarians) and I decided to eat here because it was right next to the place we were staying at and there were three veggie burgers to choose from. One of the veggie burgers sounded really good, but I ordered the burger with the caramelized onions (my fav) and also the bravas with the aioli and chutney sauce. Like the rest of Europe, this restaurant is tiny and little seating. Food comes out relatively fast though so this wasn't really a problem, even for a group of four. I was shocked by the size of the burger, felt like I never left Texas. This thing was HUGE. I usually finish all of my food, but I had trouble with this one. The burger was pretty tasty, but since it was so big I got tired of it after a while. As for the bravas, very crispy. I preferred the aioli sauce over the chutney sauce. Chutney sauce was too sweet for me, but my friends liked it. There is also ketchup and bbq sauce on the tables that are made in house. Ketchup is not what I'm used to. Generally eat local cuisine when traveling but when famished at midnight, sometimes you just have to get takeout burgers! And these were *terrific*. They didn't look large in their pictures so we ordered 2, their classic La Bacoa and their Montesa truffle burger and when we got them they were HUGE. At first thought it would be too much but after tasting them we were glad we did get 2. Got both with the dry-aged beef "entrecôte" option and they were perfectly medium rare in the middle and nicely charred outside. The truffle burger reminded us of the burger at Lola in Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, and the quality of the meat reminded us of Burger Bar in Amsterdam. Even the bun (brioche) was great. On our last night in Barcelona we went to bacoa to grab a quick dinner. I went with the chicken burger with whipped avocado, cheddarcheese and fries. My boyfriend went with the Classic bacoa burger with cheddar, and we were very satisfied with the meal. The chicken was very moist and flavourful. The meat on the Classic burger were grilled to perfection. This is my number 1 place in BCN for tasty gourmet burgers. It's owned by the same people of El Kiosko; what I love about this location is that's a great hole in the wall! Don't get me wrong...the eating is just as messyband delicous as many other burgers places. What really makes a difference is the type of burgers you'll encounter here. The burger was (pretty) good, it was well cooked and substantial. However, I wouldn't be convinced of the overall quality of the meat. The toppings I got on my burger (the bacoa) were delicious. The bun was terrible, I went for the 'integral' and for whatever reason it wasn't toasted, which worsened the messiness of the situation because of the slippy, soft bun. The patatas bravas were not great either, but not bad. I wouldn't ever hold it against a restaurant for me not enjoying the meal, but what made the experience largely unenjoyable was the misleading menu. The burgers are pretty expensive themselves and add ons like sauces or cheese are not given prices on the ordering menu. You could end up paying 13 Euros for a burger and French fries if you're not paying attention, which is far and above the quality of the food you're getting. I shouldn't have to calculate what I'm paying for a burger, it should be obvious from what I'm ordering. read more

However the buns are terrible - way too thick and large, flavorless bread that crumbles two minutes after you get your order. The service was surly and unhelpful (e.g. We tried to order a veggie patty with different toppings than what the menu suggests...and were told repeatedly no). The sauces were just ok. And the prices can get fairly high if you want any extras or order any drinks. Maybe we are biased being from the United States, but there are fast food joints and chains that do burgers better (In n Out, Five Guys, Red Robin) much less restaurants. So...a solid meh. read more
