This place was very unique. Very cozy and artsy! The banana bread latte was good! Personally I do like sweeter coffees but this was still good. You can taste banana bread opposed to straight banana. The nitro cold brew is your average cold brew. Still good! The only thing is the price. It's definitely worth a try if you're a coffee fanatic!
Backyard Brew is a really fun and unique little spot. You kind of feel like you're finding a secret coffee shop. You have to go through an alleyway to get to it. Once you're there, you'll find a cute coffee shop that has some nice flavored lattes and some solid choices for food. Definitely recommend it if you're in the area.
Such a cute spot! This is an outdoor place, and they do have a couple menus when you go in. Service was fast and I ordered a nutella mocha with oat milk, my friend ordered a pistachio baklava latte. We also ordered the avocado toast, and it was decent. The presentation was nice though. Only downfall is they provide you with 2 different receipt numbers, one for your beverage and the other for food, so it does get a little confusing.
I got a double espresso and an oat milk macchiato and both were good. I was glad they served them in glasses. The espresso is strong, acidic (a little more than I would prefer, but good if you like that), and smooth. Well dialed in. Macchiato was well made. Would try almond milk next time to see if it better compliments the espresso they use. Would definitely come back to try their Turkish coffee, cortado, and pour over.
I stopped by for a cup of coffee as I was in the area. I remember trying to come here before in the past, but probably couldn't find it due to its somewhat "hidden" location. Anyway I saw a sign for it today and turned in next to Terun. I ordered a cappuccino (my go-to order everywhere) and it was delicious! Shortly after ordering, a crowd of people showed up. They have some seating in the patio area as well.

The service is always amicable and efficient, and the coffee (I regularly do a pour over or the golden latte) hits the mark. The atmosphere is a great mix of eclectic & natural, and they always have some good tunes playing. There are plenty of spots to sit and chill, or work if that is your vibe. The pastries I've had are ok.. not great, and I normally go down the street for a bagel if I'm really wanting something to eat. I added the environmental score because I am noticing more and more places that do not offer any reusable mugs (when I forget to bring my own). I normally order an espresso but there are places where I won't because they put it in a cardboard, often waxed) cup.

There are quite a number of people working or studying, and they do have free wifi (not sure if they have outlets though). The front entrance is located right next to Terun and is this cool alleyway with murals. You can also enter from the back, which connects to the street next to the parking garage but it's not as cool. The service here is good. The people working here are friendly and inviting. I've gotten the Nutella Mocha, which is a bit heavier but is to be expected with the Nutella. Creamy and rich but still can taste the coffee. I've also gotten the Banana Bread Latte, which was strong in cinnamon taste. Didn't really remind me of banana bread but it was still good if you like cinnamon. I also got a Parmesan and Leek Pastry and my partner got a Pain Au Chocolat. The pastries felt a bit dry and stale and not the freshest. Maybe it's because I came so late in the evening. All in all, I will be coming back here since it's such a nice spot to get some work done or read. I will probably stick to the drinks moreso than food though.
Backyard Brew is in a word amazing! I love that they have many options and you can even customize your drink. Their list of flavors, most if not all organic and natural extracts, make for some of the best iced lattes I've ever had. Besides their tasty offerings of food, coffee and new addition to the menu delicious mocktails, Backyard Brew is family owned and operated by some of the most wonderful personalities and kind dispositions I've encountered. Not only are they welcoming and inclusive of all, they literally go out of their way to acknowledge, inquire, and connect with each and every customer. I highly recommened you come see all this place has to offer!
I've had this place bookmarked to check out and finally was down the street to check it out. Walked through the hallway and found the menu right before you enter. It was late in the afternoon so opted for a Chai to not be overly caffeinated LOL. Ordering was a breeze and had to use the restroom that was off to the side while I waited. I could smell coffee beans roasting and when I walked out I saw a man roasting coffee beans. Got to talking with one of the barista about the business what's popular and where to park (right behind the building). The chai was fine. Nothing out of this world. Cool space. Plenty of tables and chairs to sit. Space can feel crowded when busy. Menu visible to pick what to order ahead of time. Will need to come back and try their latte to have a better idea of the coffee here.

Backyard Brew is tucked away and is accessed via an alley off of California Ave. The coffee shop itself has plenty of tables to hang out along with pastries for sale. Ordered a nutella mocha and it came out tasty. Temperature of the latte was perfect and the espresso was smooth. The foam on top was great too! $6 for a nutella mocha. They take credit cards too!
Warning: They use cardboard straws. Everything else 5 star. The service was fast. We ordered the Banana Bread Latte & the Oh Canada Iced. The drinks were very pleasant at perfect temp and taste. The wait time for the order was about 10 minutes which is surprisingly fast for the quality of the drink along with how crowded it is. There are only 3 guys doing the job of about 5. The atmosphere is quiet with the sounds of a fountain and smooth jazz.
Backyard Brews is a hidden gem in the alleys right off of California Ave. The road has been secured for al dente dining, so the road to get here IS somewhat closed to the public -- however, DO NOT FEAR! This coffee shop is bustling and is quite outdoors like no other. The serene sound of the fountains and the hustle and bustle of local businesses bring buzz and light to this hidden gem. I love how it despite being outdoors, they still worked hard to make the best banana bread latte and croissant. Despite it being a little small, it didn't really matter much because the coffee beans that they used were quite "arabica".... with really strong coffee smell. It gives a sense of community, and the coffee shop wasn't too crowded at all. Kids were coming in and out with their families and it just makes sense to me that they did open an outdoor coffee shop like Backyard Brew did. Locally owned businesses for the win!
Very welcoming and great drinks!!! We wanted a coffee and wanted something new. We didn't know what to expect but immediately felt welcomed and in love with the spot. If you want a cute even quick spot try this!! Worth every penny spent

- 4.6: Jordanian pancakes; these are a great accompaniment to the soft-serve. They are Just thick enough and spongy enough to hold the soft serve. - 4.0: Oat Rose soft serve: Available daily 10am-2pm. Oat milk, vanilla, cardamom, rose water, sea salt. Sprinkled with pistachio. Waaaaay too expensive at $8. It's the most overpriced soft-serve in the history of soft-serve. Also: The flavor is very muted. But it goes great with the Jordanian pancakes. - 4.0: espresso shot. A respectable Italian style shot with structure. But very sour. - 2.5: Dessert rose latte. Flavor is too muted. read more

Backyard Brew is my new go-to coffee spot. The pistachio baklava latte was perfect, and don't even get me started on their pastries - the leek parmesan thing they have and butter croissant were *chef's kiss*. Super impressed with how the staff handled the Sunday rush, keeping everything organized and warm (coffee and pastries came out together!). Love the vibe and that they have plenty of seating with a creative menu that makes me want to try everything. Definitely worth hunting down this slightly off-the-path spot. Already planning my next visit! read more

The store is popular. In the early morning, there are a lot of people who are waiting in line. The store is not fancy but they allow you to DIY your coffee. I tried a coffee that I had never tasted before the flavor to me is strange. They have a lot of tables. Nice place for friends to meet and talk. read more
A cup of coffee is always enhanced by the atmosphere and the vibe around. Even more so when there is a pour over involved and a little roaster on site. Backyard brew is a unison of all this more and even the little alley to get to the counter fills you with such anticipation that you can not resist thinking that's your special place. Yemen coffee hits the spot and you can spend hours there. So grab a seat and chill out at the backyard. Loved the latte. I like that there's lots of ways to specialize your drink from the spices, to different type of sweeteners and extracts. There are so many drinks I wanted to try so I'll for sure need to come back. The avocado toast was ok. I did like the zataar on it. I like the backyard vibe. There's a closed off area where you can see staff roast the coffee beans. Service is good. They bring the food out to you. However you do wait for your drink to be called, which I don't mind. read more

It's a cool outdoor vibe with lots of seating. There are many areas with shade under umbrellas. Oat Rose Soft Serve Ice Cream - pricey at $6.50 and not sure I'd get it every time I'm here. But I tasted more oat than rose so I think the oat milk they use is pretty strong. I really liked the crushed pistachios on top because it added some crunch and added some nice flavor contrast. read more
Stopped by for a quick drink and it was good! I got a Nutella chocolate from the Non-caffeinated section and it was smooth, creamy and just the right amount of chocolate. I couldn't decide between hot or cold so I asked them which they recommended, they said that the hot was better because it was a cold day so it was a nice recommendation! There are a lot of seats and tables so you can work here. The Wi-Fi is a little spotty though. It is semi- outdoors. They have a lot of canopies and coverings so you have shade and are protected from the weather. I had a pleasant time even though it was raining because I was able to enjoy my warm drink without getting wet. read more

I came here to catch up with a friend and get some work done. All of the seating is all outdoor seating. There is shade since there's a large canopy, but it can get breezy! I ordered a Nutella Mocha with oat milk and it was made fairly quick. The drink had a very rich mocha flavor. Didn't really taste the Nutella in it. They have 1 bathroom stall for their customers & the wifi was down when we went so no one was able to work. There is a free parking garage right in front of the entrance but is a bit limited. read more
Came here after hiking the Stanford Dish. It was busy and bustling with the farmers market happening nearby, but we still got a little table outside. The coffee was delicious - my fiance got the Oh Canada with maple syrup and I got a banana bread latte. Both were really good without being too sweet or intense. I had lox toast, which was really yummy (maybe the tiniest bit TOO toasted) and my fiance had the breakfast burrito with salsa. Overall it came out quick, it was really good, and we really enjoyed the vibes. read more

U can find this alleyway right before Teruñ where an outdoor coffee bar and patio is tuck away like a secret. The alleyway is covered in art which is a very cool walkway for a very cool almost hidden coffee bar! Once u enter, there r many small tables and chairs with umbrellas mostly in the shade and even more seating outside the back gate which is a relief bc almost all of them were filled in the main way. There is a small counter where u order and various specialty lattes which i am usually inclined to ordering. I went with the Desert Rose latte with almond milk and it was very unique! Tasted of spices and rose flavoring and was not too sweet which is how i like my lattes. The lavender oolong tea was delicious and flavorful as well. The service was also very good as our coffee was hand delivered to us even tho we were way out and far from the main area which i really appreciated!! When the weather is great like this weekend, i def recommend checking this place out! read more
This place is hidden. It's coffee is okay. They have interesting flavors like tea with coconut and a lot of chai. If you like Nutella Mochas or Almond Joy drinks then this place is for you. Got the Nutella Mocha and it was too sweet for my taste. Service was slow even though no one else was in line. The restroom was dirty. Tables needed to be bused. If you're looking for sweet drinks then this is your place. It's just not mine. read more
I would have never found this place on my own. My friends introduced us here. The location of this spot is a little hard to find since it is literally like a backyard and is located right by a parking structure. I like the set up of it though. There is plenty of outdoor seating and it has a hipster vibe. They offer all sorts of drinks and pastries. They have very interesting signature brews. I didn't want anything with too much caffeine so I went with their tumeric chai which came out perfect. I like that their lattes aren't sweeten with too much sugar. My girlfriend got their desert rose latte which she said is her go to drink there. My husband got an Americano which he enjoyed. I like that they had drinks you can't really get anywhere else. You can even add cardamon, gloves, ginger or turmeric. Besides your typical coffees they offered turkish, mexican, and even ethiopia coffees. They even had different lemonades. Oh and their pastries looked so good. They had scones, croissants and savory stuffed items. Can't wait to be back. read more
This is a cute coffee shop nestled in the heart of California Avenue. The outdoor ambience and location are unbeatable! I came here on a Saturday afternoon in August to do some work - I love how they have wifi and outlets (which I generally wouldn't expect from an outdoor coffee shop). The atmosphere definitely gives backyard vibes - you have the typical backyard fencing surrounding the area, with tents for shade, and outdoor furniture. The coffee shop being outdoors has its pros and cons - it's nice to get fresh air, but it can get uncomfortable depending on the weather. I went when it was ~85 degrees outside - it was definitely warm even under the shade. Now for the drinks: I got the Raw Mocha iced, which was really good! Most coffee shops serve very sweet mochas, but this place uses unsweetened chocolate! You can probably have them add sweetener if you prefer, but I loved the taste of the unsweetened mocha! They have lots of other interesting drink options - I'm hoping to try something new during my next visit! There is a huge parking structure directly across this coffee spot, so parking shouldn't be an issue! There are also a variety of different restaurants along the street in case you want to grab a quick bite! Will definitely be back! read more
I come here all the time. Partly because they are open all the time, rain or shine- which is funny to write in a drought state but lately with so much atmospheric rivers and cyclone bombs etc I've loved seeing their ally doors open. The set up is alluring especially if you come from California Ave and go through the tunnel of art towards often- playing music. A great spot to impress a date. Seating is outside but covered. The drinks! Desert rose latte is my go to. I've tried the flat white and the Nutella as well but the desert rose is my favorite. Of course, not everyone gets why you'd put flowers in your coffee but his is something you should try if you haven't. Beignets are yummy as well. read more
Backyard Brew - a semi-hidden caffeine oasis along CalAve! Excellent house made pastries! I recently enjoyed a flakey leek gruyere hand pie here. Fantastic outdoor spaces with quirky ambiance - couches, individual tables, awnings - when the weather is nice, this is the best cafe spot to work or lounge at Great tea selection. The coffee is usually good, although tbh I have other spots nearby I choose when my primary goal is getting a great cup of coffee. This is THE spot on CalAve for a funky, cozy space to work and/or socialize over a hot drink or snack. read more
I don't know how I'm so LATTE to discovering this hidden gem. Tucked behind an alley and near the California Avenue Caltrain Station, Backyard Brew is a hidden 60's oasis with some of the most unique coffee flavors that I've tried. Some of my favorites: Nutella mocha Oh Canada! (Maple) Desert Rose I also love their breakfast burrito, which is filled with the fluffiest egg, and a yummy, refreshing salsa. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of dining in, since there tends to be spotty shade coverage and the back area is not exactly the cleanest (there are a lot of flies flying around). Would highly recommend takeout for a better experience! read more

Such a fun cafe! Hidden behind the buildings, Backyard Brew is truly giving the backyard vibes. I love that it is down an alleyway with some really cool art along the walls. Almost like it's a treat that's there for those who are willing to look. Once you get to the back, there's tons of seating in lots of different separated areas of the cafe - by the fountain, under the canopy, on the side of the coffee bar, etc. I went on a Sunday afternoon after the farmers market was done so I didn't encounter any long lines or huge crowds. They have QR codes everywhere so you could order online or you can place your order directly at the cashier. I was a little confused with the online ordering system though. If I clicked on customer creations or signature it didn't pull up the options I saw on the paper menu. But since there wasn't a line, I ended up just ordering at the cashier. Went with a regular iced latte and regular it was - good for sure and as you'd expect an iced latte to taste. It was prepared pretty quickly so we were in and out in 10 minutes tops. All in all, loved the vibes and will def have to try out the mocha everyone's raving about next time I'm in the area! read more
