I love açaí bowls and Backyard Bowls is such a perfect spot to enjoy them. They have a great selection of options and their ingredients always taste fresh. My favorite choice is the island bowl with peanut butter on top- sooo good! I really enjoy the Goleta location for dining in. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Plus the parking is super easy. The staff always seem to be in a good mood. I recently enjoyed hanging here for a bit and did some work on my laptop, though they do not have wi-fi.

Their mermaid smoothie has no consistency. Every time I pick up from this location the color is too light as if they barely put any pitaya or blue spirulina. The picture below is how it's supposed to look like

Stopped by here for a light and refreshing lunch while in Santa Barbara for a few days to move in! Backyard Bowls is my go-to for high quality acai bowls in the SB area. The restaurant is cute with some outside and indoor seating! I love their unique wooden log tables. The menu is pretty extensive, with acai bowls, oatmeal bowls (until 11am), smoothies, and toasts. There are options for gluten free granola, add ons, protein, etc. sizes range from small to large, with the exception of the Santa Barbara bowl that is only offered in large. We ordered the Power Bowl (regular) and the Berry Bowl (large) to share amongst three people. I loved my Berry Bowl, the base tasted so bright and refreshing and it came with a plethora or strawberry, banana, blueberry, and granola! The Power Bowl came with crushed nuts, banana, granola, and blueberry. I was not as big of a fan because the peanut butter flavor was extremely prominent in the base, but my brother loved it! Service was friendly. Overall- the most solid acai bowl place in the Santa Barbara area.

My go-to spot for açaí bowls throughout my undergrad! I tend to go for bowls with a plant based milk like hemp or coconut rather than juice because the milks make the base creamier. Most of my orders have been the Santa Barbara bowl, which used to be called the Backyard bowl. It's pretty much the classic açaí bowl, but the toppings are loaded on! The bee pollen adds a fragrant, flowery element. Since it only comes in a large size (about 1.5 servings), I prefer splitting it with someone. When I didn't share and tried to finish the whole thing, I would be stuffed and cold; the regular size is a perfect portion! The Power bowl, formerly called the Gainz bowl, is delicious if you like peanut butter, but quite rich. I had trouble finishing the regular size because the peanut butter flavor was getting too much! The inside can be loud with the blenders roaring and whirring, so I'd snag a table outside if you're eating it there. Parking isn't an issue in the strip mall. If you have a physical stamp card, they'll still take it but won't give out new ones since their loyalty program is now through phone numbers. Overall, Backyard Bowls really hits, especially after a hike or workout!

Went to this place pre-COVID, and WOW! I'm a hardcore smoothie bowl aficionado and Backyard Bowls is definitely in the top tier. They give massive portions of granola and fruit, the base is just as smooth as a smoothie can be, and taking the whole bowl into account, it wasn't overly sweet or sour. The workers are also super sweet; they coached me through the deliberation process of picking a bowl and made sure I was happy with my order. Very enthusiastic, efficient service! Only took a few minutes to get our bowls. The inside is also decorated in a super cute way, it's giving me all kinds of inspiration with the shiny wooden tables and succulents everywhere. The location is also prime for a post-grocery-shopping pick me up, with lots of parking outside. I can't wait to be back for more icy goodness!

Ug, I hate to write this review since I am generally a fan of the Backyard Bowls franchise. I will say that I prefer it over their biggest competitor, Blenders in the Grass. However, Oakberry inside Paseo Nuevo truly takes the crown when it comes to açaí bowls. Based on my Yelp Check-Ins, I have been to this Goleta location three times; I even became the "Duke" today. These visits have allowed me to have a decent idea of some things they could improve upon: - My largest complaint is inconsistency. The past two times I have requested to not add certain items to my bowl. For instance, this morning I had the Spartan Muesli with the ask of skipping the goji berries, coconut flakes and almonds. After arriving home with my take-out and taking off the cover, I then realized it had all the above... The order was typed in as 'with' instead of 'without,' even though it normally comes with those items?! (Image attached). The previous time they still put almonds when I requested it without for the Power Bowl. I unfortunately have an odd intolerance to almonds so I try to scoop them out. For the price and being a place with the goal of being healthier and open to various dietary limitations it is disappointing. - Their bowl options are MASSIVE. I'm a 5'8" male and I can't finish their Regular size açaí or porridge bowl. Why they don't have a children's size? The "Small 16 oz" bowl (again still too large) is only available in the Island, Berry and Power Bowls. - They claim to be sustainable on their website, yet the American portion-sized bowls cause a lot of waste. Not to mention, the bowl is paper, but the spoon appears to still be made of plastic. Correct me if I'm wrong... - While the staff is often very busy and courteous, they tend to be young college age employees who don't seem to really care about their work. Sadly, it isn't just this business that has this issue given that finding staff can be tough so I tread on this lightly. All in all, I want to like Backyard Bowls but the inconsistency is too common. Hopefully this review with constructive feedback will be read by management so when a visit down the road I can remedy it with an improved rating. (P/S: I am not asking for anything of value in return, just that changes are made).

Backyard Bowls is very fresh and refreshing, if you're that's what you're looking for. Ordered: Island Bowl + Berry Bowl which were both $9.95 each. Next time I would definitely change the base of the Island bowl from the coconut mylk base to an apple juice base. The Regular size is plenty enough for just one person. The Large would be prefect to share for two. Plus, a large costs about $12. They do have an small outside patio area to sit down and eat at.

Today I used my $10 birthday reward which was nice. I love the island bowl. I have been coming to Backyard bowls since they opened and I like sticking to the island bowl. I think I have strayed a tad from this order and wasn't pleased. They have a lot of healthy foods here. I especially loved coming here when I lived within walking distance. The ambiance is clean and well decorated. There is not a lot of decorations which makes the small local look bigger.

On the one hand I really like this place but I've had issues at both the La Cumbre and Goleta locations with the avocado toast - for some reason the food preppers dump an absurd quantity of salt on top of the avocado (and it was a skimpy quantity of avo for $11) Normally it's good but 3 or 4 times it's been inedible due to the salt. I should remember to request no added salt but it's not something I'd normally think about with avo toast. The watermelon radish was oddly dried out and much thicker than usual. Lastly I ordered but did not receive an island bowl to be eaten on site. Looks like maybe a Santa Barbara bowl? And everything packed to go.

I was staying at the Kimpton Goodland right next door to this complex. We were visiting for a wedding and not necessarily looking to have indulgent meals while traveling. Enter Backyard Bowls! From the hotel, it's a five minute walk. I ordered the island bowl and added peanut butter for protein, and my boyfriend ordered the power bowl. We both really loved what we got. The good news is that the bowls are pretty big--we were expecting something a lot smaller. That being said, I could only finish half my bowl so I wish there was a smaller size offered. I guess that is a good problem to have, especially in a pricey/expensive area like Santa Barbara! We actually stopped by after an early morning hike by the beach and it really hit the spot. We appreciated the light meal in advance of a long day of eating/drinking/dancing.

By far the best açaí bowls in the Santa Barbara area! There's something about the bowls and how they hold the perfect amount of sweetest! Their portion sizes are also great! I recommend getting a small unless you can eat a lot (then get a large)! Definitely worth the price!

Can definitely say I do not plan on returning here. I decided to try it after hearing all the hype about their bowls, and ordered a large Dragon Bowl with add ins such as goji berries and pea protein so my order for one item came out to a whopping $15. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who plans on being able to still buy food (elsewhere, paying rent, etc. The best part of this experience was when I went to pick up my order and was handed a small smoothie... when I told the employee it wasn't my order, instead of offering to actually make my order, they gave me a shoulder shrug and promptly walked away. I accidentally forgot to ask my order taker to put peanut butter on top and they accidentally blended it. I had been looking forward to this bowl that I asked them to remake it. I felt so so bad because I know the ingredients are expensive but they were so so nice about it and I left happy. This place has great customer service! I hope they read this lol! read more

The wait after you order your bowl is ridiculous! I ordered 2 bowls togo and I waited 30 minutes before walking up to the counter to watch some girl who walked in 10 min ago walk out with my 2 bowls! What is the point of asking the customer for their name if you aren't going to make sure the correct customers get the correct bowls? I thought the point of togo was to get it quick and take it away, in the time I sat there I could have eaten a for here bowl. I'm happy with the quality and amount of bowl I got. But the wait time and the lack of making sure customers are served properly really sucks! read more

I can't live without my Green Bowl. And I'm totally not a health food person. The bowls look really strange and if you've not had one, you might wonder what in the world they are. I stared with the Berry Bowl. It was a good entry level model. Loved it! Then I graduated to the Green Bowl. I don't particularly like vegetables but the Green Bowl gets veggies in me. I add peanut butter which changes the flavor some. If you're not big on sweet, have them make it with Pure Acai. I prefer the Goleta Backyard Bowls over the other two in town. The people are all super nice (just like at the other locations) and Goleta just has a nice suburban feel to it. Enjoy!! read more

The absolute worst service. They have no idea what organization is. Ordered my bowl and six customers AFTER me got theirs before. Figured there must have been a mix up so I politely reminded them and 4 bowls later finally got mine. Took 25 minutes to get mine made and leave. read more

We used to come here every week, but then they changed the seating from cozy wooden tables to just a few metal chairs. Now there's hardly any seating and it's really crowded so unfortunately we eat elsewhere. Bummer. They still make great bowls... 5 stars for the food, 1 star for the setting. read more

This is a great healthy spot to grab something naturally sweet to eat. I usually get their island bowl and it holds me down for a few hours before i need something a bit more filling. I suggest to dine-in if you have the time as it seems like you get more than the to-go portion.The staff is always friendly here! read more

This place is amazing. They're a little more on the expensive side so I don't go too often but it is definitely one of my favorites. I'm too scared to venture out from what I usually get so I always end up going with my go to which is the island bowl. It's absolutely delicious and the small is enough to keep me full for hours. Definitely a good choice when I want something light and not too heavy. read more

i normally wouldnt eat this kind of stuff but my friend convinced me and it was pretty good. Everything is super healthy.. fruit and grain bowls.. super colorful.. i had some bright purple frozen yogurt with fresh fruit and granola... super hippie .. but pretty tasty.. this place is super trendy and gets busy as well. read more

So far I've had the berry bowl, the island bowl, and the backyard bowl. All of them were delicious! This place never disappoints and I am always excited to eat here. If only the bowls weren't so pricey I would come more frequently. There is a bit of a wait at times but its not too bad. Overall, the bowls here are well worth it! read more

Backyard Bowls is my ultimate FAVORITE place for Acai Bowls!!! My only regret is that I wish I had discovered this place sooner when I was attending UCSB years ago lol.. UGHHH! It's okay.. I make sure to go to Backyard Bowls whenever I am in SB though! All of their locations are great, consistent, friendly service, massive portions, and absolutely delishhh!!! Sooo I came here today w/ the BF for a snack before a 5 hour drive back to the city. He claims he wasn't hungry and didn't want an acai bowl.. that's until we got there! We both ended up ordering our own "small". We went for the Diego and the new Gainz Bowl! We are obsessed with peanut butter so that already makes it 1000x better for us! I've tried many of their bowls so I can't decide which one is my favorite.. you cannot go wrong! I live in SF now so I have to settle for what's here.. But I would greatly appreciate it if Backyard Bowls can open up a location in SF! I would dieee read more

Definitely did not expect to have a decent meal going in and came out very satisfied. The Brasil bowl was very refreshing and filling. Other than being a bit pricey the ingredients are very fresh and you come out feeling like you did something good for your body. read more

Love me some backyard bowl. Every item on their menu I've tried has been awesome. I like the splash of yogurt to an acai bowl to add a little protein. Most of the employees have been nice and courteous and seem to care about doing a good job which struck me as refreshing. I wish they were open past 5 so I could go by on my way home from work for a dinner pick up. But I understand that may not be cost effective. I do appreciate opening at 7am so I can stop by on my way to work when I have time. Cheers! read more

It's pretty hard to find places to eat that focus on good organic foods. We were really happy to find this place on our way home from a mini vacation. Diego bowl was amazing and I loved the crunchy texture of the granola. My husband got the cocoa smoothie. I highly recommend the bowls!! Very filling! read more

Super good bowls, loved this place a lot. The island bowl tasted really good, fresh and healthy. Even thought I got a small, the portion was large and the toppings were fresh and plentiful. If you're looking for a place to sit down and do some work on your laptop for an hour or so in a chill environment, this place is not it. I spent $9 on a small smoothie and small coffee, and then they wouldn't give me the WiFi password when I sat down at a table (there's clearly a "Backyard Bowls WiFi" you can connect to). It's not busy, I'm one of 4 people in here, and there are plenty of open tables. The smoothie is fine, the coffee is fine, but I feel like this place is trying to be more uppity than it needs to be. read more

This place was great! The bowls are tasty and filling. The smoothies are great. Not surprised by the prices. You get what you pay for. The only reason for 4 stars was due to the wait. Places gets busy and it took a little long to get our food but service was working hard and as fast as possible. Would come back when in town read more

Established in 2009.

Backyard Bowls is the creation of two friends, Pete Heth and Dan Goddard. They met their first year in the dorms at Santa Barbara, and have been close friends ever since. After graduating college, both of them proceeded to spend some time in the working world. Not satisfied with their direction, they each decided that some serious change was in order. Dan picked up and moved to the island of O'ahu, Hawaii, where he spent his days surfing and working in local restaurants. Pete went on an extended voyage to a number of the far reaches of our globe, culminating in a few months living with Dan in Hawaii. Aside from surfing, one of their favorite things about living on O'ahu was the acai bowls. For breakfast or lunch, before, between or after surfing, there was absolutely nothing better than an acai bowl. On top of that, the ingredients were distributed completely unevenly between the two halves. I literally had to take both halves apart and redistribute everything myself just to make it edible. Nothing about this felt fresh. I also swapped the "house-made chips" for tater tots -- which turned out to be the exact Ore-Ida frozen tots you buy at the grocery store, and even worse... they were undercooked and mushy. I am willing to bet I just paid $16 for about $2.50 worth of ingredients. For $16, this was not just underwhelming -- it was bad, REAL BAD. Do NOT order this sandwich.

Love this place! One of my favorite places to get breakfast. The bowls are big, so they fully substitute a meal. If you get a large bowl, it will tie you over from 11am until dinner. Some people might complain that the portion sizes are too big, but I think the bowls should be seen as a meal, not as a snack or as a treat. The best part about the bowls are the ingredients. You can taste the freshness and the quality with each bite. The combination of flavors is fantastic... my favorite bowls are Diego's Power bowl and Dan's special. The power bowl contains peanut butter... who would have thought of putting peanut butter in a cereal bowl??? Genius! And Dan's special contains carrots! Awesome! I also like the fact that they encourage you to eat it and use the ceramic bowls and metal spoons instead of using the disposable stuff. The location in Goleta is close to my house, so I stop here more often. But I have gotten pretty consistent bowls at all three locations, and the staff is always friendly. I tried working at ByB, but the blenders are a bit too loud to stay inside and work at my laptop. There is outside seating and the noise doesn't make it all the way out, but it's too bright to work on my laptop. On the other hand, it really forced me to focus on what I am eating and probably that made me enjoy my bowl even more. read more

Backyard Bowls is a great place to go if you're looking for a healthy, light breakfast or lunch. I got the Green Bowl with blended Acaí, Banana, Broccoli, Spinach, Ginger, Lime Juice & Apple Juice and Strawberries, Blueberries, Granola & Honey on top. It was delicious and the perfect size for me! A great way to get a healthy dose of greens if you aren't a veggie fan. Even though it contains broccoli and spinach, the other ingredients completely mask it, making it taste like a sweet, thick fruit smoothie (in the best possible way!). They also didn't skimp on the strawberries, which I thought was great, and the granola helped to make it feel more satisfying as a meal as opposed to just a smoothie. The staff was very friendly and the facility its self was quite clean. I'm looking forward to going back and trying another option on their menu, possibly one of their hot quinoa bowls! I was VERY skeptical about this for lunch. I grew up in a mid-western family that believed if you didn't eat (or consider eating) part of a dead animal for lunch or dinner, you're: a) starving, b) punishing yourself, c) poor). Also, these bowls looked more like breakfast fare with the fruit, granola, yogurt, not "lunch". I was pleasantly surprised at how FILLING mine was! (granted I ordered a larger bowl). I will go back. I went with a friend who is kinda a hippie, progressive, Calif. Vegan, and there is that "vibe" there, but I didn't feel out of place. There were some moms, and working gals there. Please Please Please someone help me with telling the staff to keep their Thumbs out of the bowls!....they need to learn that when you serve a dish u bring it on a tray then hold bowl on both sides and set down,every time I get my meal sure enough some young untrained staff sticks their thumb in it!....YUCK!...
