We originally went to the dock side diner first, there was nothing there that looked appetizing...and there was nothing for my wife the vegetarian to eat. We ended up walking a little further and came across the Back Stage Express restaurant. First, it reminds me of going to work: welding supplies, automotive paint cans, old tires, lots of spare parts. I had the royal guard burger, it's a 1/3 pound angus beef burger with BBQ beef brisket on top. It's served with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and fries. The burger is just okay. I think it lacked flavor, maybe some BBQ sauce or hot sauce would have given it the flavor it's missing. As for the fries, they were okay, they just needed a little salt and pepper. My daughter had the chicken and waffles. She seemed to like it. I tried the chicken, let's just say it's not Publix chicken tenders (which are awesome). My wife had a capresse sandwich with arugula, only one problem it was very light on the arugula. It had about 3 leaves! Dessert was okay. I had the chocolate mousse and my wife and daughter shared the Darth Vader cupcakes. We wanted to go to Woody's for some food but it was raining so we headed here instead. The menu has been updated since I've last been here. As we'd already had a buffet for lunch we weren't overly hungry. I thought I'd only option would be chicken tenders but they had a Cuban sandwich on the menu which looked good. So we shared that between the two of us and it was plenty of food. The Cuban is cut in two, a toasted hot panini and one half was plenty enough for each of us, we couldn't managed to finish the fries. The sandwich though was very good, lots of meat, sauce and cheese as well as pickle. It was very enjoyable, just the meat tried to slip other the other end of the sandwich!!! read more

Yay GF bread/buns, and chicken tenders (cornmeal)!! My second visit here, the staff informed me that they MAKE their own gluten-free chicken tenders....SAY WHAAAAAT?! I had already committed to one of the burgers (on a GF bun of course) for that visit, but on the next time around, I was all about those tenders. They were light and crispy (not to mention FRESH), similar to some storebought branded GF-tenders, but a hint more of that sweet corn meal flavor. Just about everything can be made or ordered gluten-free here except for the chili and the waffles. As others have said, some of the items you can share with a friend, so if you're just hankering for a snack, go on and split something. Oh, and the SPACE! It's nice to be able to stretch out anywhere in Disney. There is space to walk, get your condiments, walk again, sit down, stretch, eat, and relax. PLENTY of seating inside and outside. Avoid the kitschy "paint can" nook though, it's hot as all get out. If you're on a Disney Dining Plan this is an amazing choice for a quick-service meal. I was on a moderate dining plan so the "full meal" was included (ie. a main, a side, a drink and a dessert). In this case a turkey club sandwich, fries, a coca-cola and a cupcake. During our recent visit to Hollywood Studios the park was celebrating StarWars Weekends and had lots of fun special events (Jedi training, interstellar autograph signing with the stars, etc.). We stopped into the Backlot Express restaurant in search of a StarWars cupcake for me and were pleasantly surprised to find great gluten-free options for my husband and amazing customer service! Who would have guessed? MID-AFTERNOON SNACK TIME When my husband mentioned he was on a gluten-free diet, the cashier called for the manager (as they do for all guests with food allergies). The manager arrived quickly to gather more information and to make my husband's order personally to ensure NO cross contamination. Not only did the manager know all of the gluten-free options (burger, chicken, GF hamburger bun, fries), but when my husband said he actually only wanted the fries, the manager insisted on providing those complimentary. Wow! DINNER After a snack here earlier in the day, we returned for dinner since we knew the restaurant could provide a variety of gluten-free options. My husband had the burger, GF bun, and delicious fries made just for him. His meal was served on a special green tray to designate it was a special, allergy-free meal. I was quite happy with the Pressed Turkey Sandwich ($10.49) on multi-grain bread which came with a choice of carrots or French fries. The sandwich was served panini style - everything inside pressed together on the grill. The turkey had a slight smoked flavor and was well balanced with the vegetables and cheese melted together inside. Sadly, the Yoda cupcake was not quite as delicious as I had envisioned, but I wanted to partake in some of the StarWars Weekend festivities and really, how often can you eat a white chocolate light saber?! Although it's tucked back into a corner of the Hollywood Studios lot, it is actually a pretty sizeable eatery! It was a touch confusing on where exactly the ordering was, as the seating area is broken into a few buildings. They offer standard burgers, nuggets, and the like. Hubs had the burger, I went with nuggets. They do give you a TON of fries with each order, so be ready for that - ha! My nuggets were so buried under the mountain of fries, I had to eat a bunch before I could get to nuggets without knocking fries all over the table. Staff was just okay here - not really the Disney vibe we usually get. The cashier didn't greet us, but did move the line quickly - so 50/50 here. The theme is fun and whimsical - there are a bunch of prop styled items to look at throughout. There is even a hidden Mickey in one of the buildings, so be on the look out! Overall: B Solid eatery in Hollywood Studios. Burger was just okay - nuggets were good. They give you a ton of fries! ($35 for the 2 of us to eat.) read more

Had lunch at Backlot Express in Hollywood Studios. Traditional American cuisine. When i went, it was mobile order only. The Disney app worked great. I showed up at the time I requested and told the app I arrived. Guests are required to wait outside the restaurant until your order is ready. It took about 5 minutes to prepare my meal. Easy! I like this restaurant because of the large outdoor/indoor eating space. It was a great place to take a break and feel like you had some space to social distance. read more

In regards to being a quick service restaurant in Hollywood Studios, the Backlot is a decent choice for lunch. I had the Royal Guard Burger: 1/3 lb Chargrilled Angus Beef Burger, topped with Barbecued Brisket, Pepper Jack Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato and a Pickle on a Dark Bun served with French Fries. I like the condiment bar--it's easy to use, and I prefer barbecue sauce on my French Fries. The oatmeal cookie was not as amazing as I thought it would be. read more

There is really nothing special about this Hollywood Studios food spot. I cant say what I had was bad but it was just chicken fingers and fries. Pretty standard theme park food. I will say the Wookiee Oatmeal Cookie Sandwich that I had was awesome and I would definitely get it if i went back to this spot again. The food wasn't exactly hot nor cold. The staff was friendly and the restaurant clean. I have also had a burger from here and it was also good but pretty standard as far as burgers go. This is a great spot if you're in the park and looking for decent food that is quick. Loved this location when we were in Disney! A great place to escape the sun and heat, while still being entertained. The restaurant is designed to look like the inside of an abandoned hangar, filled with stunt materials from some of Disney's (mostly Indiana Jones) previous films. The large fans, made to look like propellers, provide a nice cooling breeze in the Florida heat. The seating outside, where we chose to sit, was directly across from the Star Wars Jedi Academy. So during lunch we got to watch the young prospective apprentices battle Darth Vader and his acolytes! Food was great. We tried the chicken and waffles, the burger, the grilled chicken sandwich, and the pizza. Everything was great, higher quality than that of other 'Quick Service' locations. The drinks however, were top notch. The frozen vodka lemonade and the margarita were delicious, refreshing, and cooling. On a 98 degree day, these helped out a lot. Highly recommend you try one. The only downside of this place is that there isn't many healthy options. Aside from the grilled chicken sandwich, you can request apples instead of fries. But that's about it. The fast food joint at Disney World's Hollywood Studios isn't worth the money. You're charged over 10 dollars for your basic burger. Moreover, this is similar to a burger you would find at a high school cafeteria but bigger. The theme park just makes so much money they don't feel the need to invest in better food for customers. And people have to eat right? The place isn't so packed during prime lunch hours either. So, customers are inclined to dine here anyway. The menu selections are few, and this keeps the lines moving. It works for them I guess. On another note, the place is clean and spacious. 'Ello chaps! Backlot Express is a Quick Service (QS) restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Tucked away between Indian Jones and Star Wars, this is one of the larger QS restaurants in Studios. Their menu features American fare, such as chicken fingers, cheeseburgers, and salads. Plus desserts. What makes Backlot Express a bit more appealing than the other QS restaurants, like ABC Commissary, is that Backlot Express has a bit more indoor and outdoor seating capacity. That makes a world of difference, especially during rush hours. TIP: Use the My Disney Experience app to order your food on your phone, and then when the alert tells you your food is ready, simply walk up to the prescribed counter and pick up your order --- all while skipping the long order lines. OVERALL: I give Backlot Express THREE CHEERS out of five. At the end of the day it's still over priced fast food, served in a trough style cattle call but compared to other options in the park, it's got something going for it. read more

This place is our reliable, go-to stop, for a quick service Disney meal when visiting Hollywood Studios. Located across from Star Tours and the Jedi Academy Stage, this location is the perfect place to grab a bite after your tour of the Star Wars galaxy. Their offerings are the standard choices you'll find at most Disney quick service locations throughout the resorts. My go-to meal here is their grilled veggie sandwich. In the middle of the restaurant they have their condiment bar (side note-I cover EVERYTHING with their awesome honey mustard). Every time we've come here we've had awesome service from the staff taking our order-very friendly and knowledgeable. The décor is that of a studio prop closet. Signage, random items, etc are found throughout the restaurant. They offer indoor and outdoor dining and the set up is the same as other locations: wait in line, place your order, move forward, pick-up said order, get to your table, and get your grub on. Don't go in expecting Victoria & Albert's, you'll be greatly disappointed, but if you go in looking for a solid burger & fries style experience, you'll be a happy camper. This is my absolute favorite quick service location in all of Hollywood Studios and one of my favorites in all of Disney World. I make sure to stop in with each visit to the park (well each Disney trip) because... well I just love it that much. It's got your basic burgers whatnot, but I still think that it's worth a check out. It's the perfect place for you if you have picky eaters or are one yourself. We ate here when on vacation in Orlando. It is located in Hollywood Studios which we thought would be very expensive but when I ordered the price was very fair averaged about 10.00 a meal chicken fingers waffle fries and a drink. After 20+ visits to this park this is the first visit to Backlot Express. I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I love that this quick service location has a self service drink station, a rarity for Disney locations. I ordered the Royal Guard burger and was pleased with the flavor. Although, the picture on the menu has way more brisket than actually served. Nonetheless I would order it again. I would recommend this place if you are at Hollywood Studios. A quick service restaurant with good options. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken nuggets, and salad. I opted for the chicken salad and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Chili dog fans will enjoy the one here (and all other chili dogs across the parks). Their cupcakes are big and awesome; there's a lemon vanilla and chocolate peanutbutter (my fave). If your a sweets fan, definitely get one. Annual pass holders receive a discount here, so be sure to mention to your cashier. This is our usual stop to get a quick bite to eat when we are in Hollywood Studios. The food isn't anything spectacular, but I've never had anything that was bad here either. Disney isn't known for having the healthiest choices when it comes to dining, but they do have some places that have some healthier fare...which I find especially nice during those hot summer months when you really don't want to eat something that is to heavy or you just want a nice cool crisp salad. The Backlot Express also has refillable drinks! So if you order a fountain beverage they just give you an empty soda cup or souvenir cup if you purchased one and you can go refill it as many times as you want during the time that you are eating. This is also a great place to fill up your water bottles with ice and water since the soda machines are out in the open and the lemonade button doubles as a water button(the water and the ice that comes out of the machine is free), plus it beats standing on line inside of another restaurant for a cup of ice water. read more

At some point I knew my fiance and I would have a hankering for a burger and I am glad our day at Hollywood Studios is when we decided to cash in that craving. I had been following an Instagram food blog about Disney food options and the one day it was all about burger ratings at the parks. The Backlot Express burger ranked very high for that specific blogger so I decided to add this place on my favorites list on My Disney Experience app so I would remember. It can be difficult to find because well, its in the backlot area :). The food service area is tucked away on the inside part so you need to walk down a few stairs to get to it. Anyway, there is plenty of seating both outdoors and indoors. And some of the outdoor seating areas have a great view of the Star Wars attraction where Darth Vador and Kylo Ren test out young jedi training techniques (kid volunteers). I had the Angus Bacon Cheeseburger while my fiance was bold and had the Royal Guard Burger. Both VERY good!!! Do not be alarmed by the black bun on the Royal Guard Burger it was still very tasty and great consistency. Plenty of fries (which were also really good), and it was nice that they gave you giant cups you could fill up yourself. We ended our quick-service lunch with a Darth Vador chocolate peanut butter cupcake and a chocolate mousse. Both surprising delicious considering this was just a quick-service facility. I will say like most of the eateries in any Disney park that the food is probably very overpriced, however you get an extreme quantity of food so at least that is not lacking for paying so much. And I was on the Disney Dining plan so the price did not really affect me so I did not need to pay attention. Would definitely recommend this place for a burger! read more

This was the worst food we had during our whole Disney experience by a long shot. I don't understand why the food here was so much worse (and more expensive) than for instance Cosmic Ray's Cafe at the Magic Kingdom. Shouldn't they be equivalent across all parks? I guess not! Maybe the different casual cafes are run by different companies. Anyhow, I highly recommend not coming here. The food was really expensive and it was really bad. And by that I mean you will spend $12 on a tiny nearly inedible sandwich. It is also much smaller than some of the cafes at the other parks and we had to sit outside half the time. Eventually my husband scored an inside table much to our relief. This was after we had hiked all over the Hollywood studios looking for a place to eat. Everywhere we went it was super crowded with huge lines and no tables. They definitely have a lack of inside dining options at this particular park (Animal Kingdom seemed pretty bad too but we didn't even try to have lunch there). We really wish we had known about the Sci-Fi dine in theater before coming here. Would have been willing to spend some money for a fun lunch. Unfortunately, it was completely booked up. read more

Always scared when getting into this kind of "junk-fast-food" place just to find myself only with fries because they only serve anything with meat. But hey, thank's Backlot they serve one menu for vegetarian, and there I ordered, their Grilled Vegetable Sandwich. Too pricey I guess, but o well that's fine, the sandwich was good after all with a very well-cooked red pepper since I never like them but it tasted more like tomatoes and my favorite huge cucumber in it.
