I finally tried this spot for lunch today. It's a very cute 50s style diner inside with red and white decor. It's very clean. Our waitress was great. I saw on a chalk board when we arrived that they had a special of wings and fries. I asked about them, and they were bone in but no sauce. Just fried wings. So I went with a chicken fried steak dinner instead. I like to compare all of the chicken fried steaks in Muskogee. My side salad was simple and tasty with house made ranch. The gravy was very good, and the Texas toast was thick. The downfall was the chicken fried steak. It's a frozen one just deep fried. It was good, but I love a hand breaded chicken fry. The burgers are fresh and not frozen though because the husband had a Cajun burger. But we aren't sure why it was called Cajun unless they just used Cajun spice. 2 teas, a chicken fried steak dinner, and a burger and fries was $35 though, and I think that was just too steep for the quality of diner food. I think mainly because we are spoiled in Muskogee by several other fantastic diners with extremely cheap prizes. I think if I go back to Back in Time, I'll get breakfast. The young lady that served us this morning did an exceptional job. Very friendly, welcoming, helpful and attentive. Service like we had this morning, along with a perfect breakfast makes for a happy weekend start. I had the "Traditional Breakfast": two eggs sunny side up, two strips of bacon crisp end to end, flawless crisp hash browns, a biscuit and gravy. The biscuit had received additional attention from the cook. It was split, buttered then toasted. A nice touch. The gravy was from a mix. No one makes gravy anymore. My wife ended up with a kid's meal: one egg, one bacon, and one pancake. The cook is outstanding at the craft, an artist and a person that obviously loves what they do. The pancake on my wife's plate turned out to be in the shape of Minnie Mouse with a pancake bow. Along with that was a pancake flower. That brightened her day and the pancakes were perfect! Check the pictures. Back in Time Diner is a cozy, clean comfortable, 50's 60's themed diner. It is decorated with Coca Cola, road signs, pictures of era music icons and other paraphernalia. Ads for the local businesses are laminated under the clear plastic table tops. Most of the businesses have been closed for years and long forgotten. I always enjoy searching the advertisements for odd ball companies or funny names while I wait. Little mom and pop restaurants like Back in Time Diner are a rare haven. A place where you can truly enjoy a meal and the atmosphere. The folks that work there make you feel good. You quickly forget about everything on the other side of that front door you just walked through. Excellent! Another one of my top picks for a small-town Oklahoma diner! Something you might not know. Muskogee is the home of the Griffin Food Company, makers of the "World Famous," Griffin's Syrup, proudly MIO. It's what's on the pancakes and waffles there. It's ONLY what's on the pancakes and waffles there. It is illegal to bring any other brand of syrup in to the city of Muskogee. If you are caught with more than an ounce of some other brand of syrup you will be charged with both possession and intent to distribute. Don't test the law. Great little diner and great, friendly staff. If you're here for breakfast, I suggest the Biscuit Stacker. It's a really good white gravy, poured over biscuits and topped with chunks of ham and sausage, with a side of hash browns or tater triangles (potato cakes). Their burgers are fantastic and my son loves the chicken fried steak. Meals may take a little extra time to get to the table, but they're always hot and fresh. The coffee is great (truly a bottomless cup) and the iced tea is clean and not tannic tasting. All cold drinks are served in large cups, so you don't need to worry about running out. They also offer to refill when you're ready to leave, which is a nice extra. If you have the time for a breakfast or lunch, do yourself a favor and go to Back in Time. On our recent trip from Dallas - Memphis - St. Louis - Dallas for example, we not once found a place for breakfast! Our last leg of this trip was from Joplin to Dallas. About the time we were approaching Muskogee Oklahoma, our "breakfast" of cookies was starting to wear off. YELP to the rescue! There seemed to be a lot of bad choices in this area, but I noticed this place with some favorable reviews. We set the GPS to "Back In Time Diner". First of all, if you're on a road trip, this place is NOT on the highway! It's about 7 miles off the beaten track. "This better be good" I thought. We arrived at the diner, which, like most places that aren't grocery stores or Walmart, was pretty empty. A nice lady greeted us. Someone's grandmother for sure. One look at the menu and bingo! Chicken fried steak! My son and I ordered that, and my husband ordered some kind of chicken. Nothing personal but once I see chicken fried steak on a menu I don't really care about anything else. The food didn't come out right away, which to me is a good sign. We sipped iced tea and waited. Then grandma came out with pipping hot plates in her hands. The steak was just PERFECT, loaded with cream gravy. I had ordered mashed potatoes with mine which.....hmmm... pretty sure those were flakes but it didn't matter. That steak was so delicious, I would consider driving up there just for that! I would totally recommend going to this place is you're on the road. First time eating here. I don't know if I would go back. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Real basic and small portions. I did the pancake breakfast. Which was two good sized pancakes and scrambled eggs and one sausage patty. Thought the egg and meat portion could have been bigger. The diner it's self is an old time feel and was clean. The food is ok. Just nothing great. They do however like to nickel and dime you for every little thing, (ie salsa for an omlette). The service slow. Today a group of 3 came in and had to leave without eating because of the slow service. The bathrooms were very hot and smelly. First time I used them. Not the cleanest place around. I posted this also on Facebook and well the diner replied in rude angry tone. They (according to them) were very busy (2 dozen customers). Just cruising thru Oklahoma on a long road trip from Minneapolis to San Antonio. Needed breakfast so we stopped at this amazing diner. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood this quaint place is everything you want and more! The breakfast was on time. The bacon had the perfect amount of crunch. Off the beaten path this local favorite is family owned and operated. The sweet older lady that served us was fantastic. Full of quaint Betty boop nick nacks. A simple and fair priced menu. My wife had the grilled chicken, my nephew had the French toast breakfast platter and I had the small biscuit and gravy with a dish the call the hot mess. The grilled chicken tasted fresh and had a good helping of lightly sautéed veggies topped with cheese served with golden brown hash browns and toast. The French toast was hot off the griddle with a hint of cinnamon (it's available deep fried if you like ) and topped with powdered sugar served with meat of choice and two eggs your way. To quote my nephew "those are the tastiest eggs ever". The hot mess is a kitchen sink style omelet with lots of flavorful cheese and sausage and so much more. The biscuit and gravy were simple and effective biscuit was griddle toasted and the gravy was a simple well made pepper gravy.
