When I went to Back in Motion in May 2022 I was in a very bad way and wasn't sure I'd be able to get around and do simple household chores again, much less drive. 4 1/2 months later I'm doing substantially better and have been discharged from Physical Therapy. Luke Cancilla DPT, was a Godsend and helped me make progress session after session. My only regret is that they told me I'm too well for there services now and discharged me. I'm driving again, climbing stairs, doing household chores, I feel more confident and am looking forward to my next stages in recovering. I received superior treatment from Back in Motion 4-5 years ago. I went back with significant neck, shoulder and bicep problems, resulting from spinal compression. To my dismay, all my former therapists were gone. To my delight, the new therapists were just as good --- maybe better. When I first arrived, I could barely move my neck and could not turn my head enough the change lanes while driving on the highway. After 8 sessions I could turn my head about 60 degrees to each side. Similar improvement to my biceps, plus my shoulder and spine pinching were totally gone. Highly recommended, especially Emily and Drew. read more

I can't speak highly enough about the team at Back in Motion. I was treated for 'tennis elbow.' The therapist that I was initially assigned was scheduled to move when I started therapy. Therefore, I had the opportunity to work with multiple therapists for treatment, Laura, Drew, Luke and Mary. They were all outstanding!! The entire staff (receptionists and therapists) are all very friendly and professional. They all do an excellent job of explaining the causes of my condition and how the various exercises and treatment were intended to help resolve the issue. This was my first experience with PT in many years and let me just say....the service was outstanding. My PT was Katy Lyon and she was amazing. I used their services from June 2018 through October 2018. Katy was very attentive and helpful. She explained everything before she had my try it. I appreciated it considering I was a bit stiff in the beginning. She put together some exercises for me to do at home, which I did. She was consistent and persistent. I started going here in November after I started to develop some serious neck pain. These therapists here are FANTASTIC! I saw Danielle mainly and she was very thorough, down to earth, and helpful especially explaining things in a way that I could understand them. I went from barely able to move my neck to moving almost within a normal range in all directions. I was even able to get in for a couple very last minute appointments to deal with a neck strain/knot that they fixed in ONE visit. I had the pleasure of working with a couple of the other therapists as well, and they were equally pleasant and helpful. The range of therapies they cover at this facility is astounding! The facility is new, clean, and very professional. I felt very relaxed and at ease here and look forward to continuing my treatments here. They will send you home with a printout showing detailed instructions for continuing the therapy at home between sessions. read more

Most caring and professional therapists! Between my husband and I, with two different areas of need, we have seen nearly all the therapists at this location. I love that each therapist has a slightly different technique; keeps things interesting when you go regularly! They do like to schedule you with the same 1-3 therapists, so that works out great. Although you start going to PT for a specific area of concern, they are mindful of making sure your "total body" is in sync. Unlike other PT offices (where the therapist schedules 3 patients at the same time, all working in an open space), here you receive 1 on 1 care and attention for the entire hour of your appointment. They have private rooms as well as a "gym" depending on what your needs are. Often, you'll find that you use both spaces during the appointment time. I highly recommend Back In Motion! read more

This place is excellent! I started with total body motion (or as I call it, "witchcraft!") on my shoulder which helped me go from very limited movement to feeling much better in one visit. Over the next several weeks I was amazed at how quickly Twila was able to get me back to almost 100% mobility and strength. She used active movement and passive massage which helped both, and dry needling which did help with a bit of neck pain I also had. Any questions or concerns I had, she took the time to talk with me about and make sure I was comfortable. The rest of the staff was incredibly pleasant, kind, and very welcoming. I have given Back in Motion the highest rating possible because of their consistent excellent service with readily measurable results. The therapists are excellent and genuinely care about your progress. At age 83 I have used them for physical rehabilitation after surgery (hip), falls causing severe pain and balance problems. In addition to the on-site sessions the therapists have provided me with detailed plans for daily exercises I can perform at home with limited equipment. They also provide periodic reviews of healing progress measured against my personal goals. read more

I saw Caryn Grogan, a licensed physical therapist, at Back in Motion earlier this year. My complaint was arthritis in both knees for which I was receiving cortisone shots every three months. I had heard about a technique called "counterstrain'" and Caryn is licensed in that particular therapy. It is a fascinating technique, noninvasive, with no associated pain. After several visits, my knees were much improved. I was due for cortisone shots in January but due to my excellent physical therapist and counterstrain therapy, I have not been back to the orthopedist for cortisone shots since last October. I highly recommend not only Caryn Grogan but the counterstrain technique. It definitely worked for me in terms of delaying knee replacement! read more

The therapists at Back in Motion Lorton are excellent. I have been treated by Pattie, Jamie and Dan are they are all so knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and kind. They have helped me a great deal with weakness in my hip, leg, and ankle. They use every modality from massage and heat, to warmup and stretching, strength training, balance training, and counseling. "Homework" with handouts and online video is provided. The front office staff are so nice and helpful, and they handle all the insurance stuff. The facility is clean and neat. Everyone is so nice at Back in Motion. I've never met such pleasant and patient receptionists-I mean all of them. I would call them constantly and ask them to reschedule my appointments, often times putting them on hold while I tried to figure out my schedule. I always apologized for hassling them so much and they would always tell me not to worry about it, that it wasn't a bother. I had three different physical therapists and they were all great to work with. Patty sticks out in my mind because she's got such a great personality. She encouraged me to stay optimistic and patient when I was starting to feel down on how long it would take for me to recover. Every appointment I had with her, felt like I was talking to a close friend. We'd spend the entire time cracking up. Payment and everything was such a breeze at this place. I will definitely go back if I ever need to. The one thing that I think they could improve on is: less talking among the therapists. When I was at their gym for example, and there would be other therapists around, they would wind up chatting a bit too much. I felt like--I'm here because I need to recover from my injury, I want to use up every single minute I have with you, so please focus on ME. There are few places as special as Back in Motion. A few years ago my husband had an incident ending in a torn meniscus. Post op he needed physical therapy and I brought him to his first appointment. That first appointment included and evaluation beyond what I expected (having had knee surgery myself years ago and having also gone thru post op PT I knew the path...or I thought I did...wow I wish I'd gone to Back in Motion). I had planter fasciitis in my left foot and between my heel and mid arch the pain was enough that simply walking was difficult and painful. After months of waiting for it to go away I contacted Back In Motion on advice from a friend. I felt immediate relief after the first visit, with a noticeable improvement walking to the car that day. I had six visits over about 10 weeks, maybe slightly less time, and the pain has been 100% eliminated. The entire office was professional and I genuinely felt concern by the staff for my problem and the individual plan and post treatment exercises were exactly what I needed. I have been in and out of physical therapy with a number of different physical therapy treatment facilities and therapists for 39 years for back and neck injuries, other orthopedic injuries, and fibromyalgia. By far, Back in Motion is the best provider of physical therapy. It starts with the owner Mary Nalls who has been readily available to make sure I had the physical therapist who best fits your my current needs. The receptionists are kind and helpful. What makes Back in Motion so special is that the therapist spends the entire hour with the patient. I have never been turned over to a technician or left alone other than for short periods of heat or ice and stimulation. In addition, all of the therapists stress exercise (in the office and at home) to strengthen the body to promote recovery and prevent later injuries. The therapists attend frequent training sessions to keep them up to date on current methods to treatment. In Kingstowne, Anne Marie stands out for her years of experience, bedside manner, and creative exercises to treat the injury. For my fibromyalgia, Robert Dowd, who has a B.S. in medicine from medical school in addition to advanced degrees in physical therapy, has been exceptional. He is the first physical therapist and medical care provider of any kind who has ended any of my fibromyalgia flare-ups without the use of medicine. When I have a fibromyalgia flare, I see him and his expertise with the strain/counter strain technique has reduced the flare-up.
