Lahaina Fried Chicken with spam fried rice
Donna A.

My kids and I dined in on Sunday, October 4, 2026. We enjoyed all the food we ordered. Our favorites are there Lahaina, fried chicken and spam fried rice. I especially love their Chinese chicken salad with Lahaina fried chicken always hits the spot, especially if you're on a special diet and not eating too much carbs. service is always great. We were blessed to be served by Madeline. Ambiance is also great. Felt like we were back in Hawaii with all the local folks eating there. If you're craving some local grindz, definitely Back Home in Lahaina will satisfy your craving.

Review #1015 2026-085 Food Order: Back Home Sampler (Lahaina fried chicken, kalua lumpia, wontons, grilled beef stix, Filipino lumpia, spam musubi) Hawaiian Nachos (wonton chips, Portuguese sausage, jack & cheddar cheese, tomatoes, green onions) Beef Stew Curry (rice) Fish & Chips (macaroni salad, french fries) Kaibi Short Ribs Entree (macaroni salad, ramen cabbage salad, & rice) Kalua Pork (macaroni salad, ramen cabbage salad, & rice) Keiki Meal (Lahaina fried chicken, french fries, lemonade, ice cream sundae) Lahaina Fried Chicken Entree (macaroni salad, ramen cabbage salad, & rice) Lahaina Wrap (Lahaina fried chicken, ramen cabbage salad, Back Home special sauce, spinach tortilla) with Fries Lau Lau (macaroni salad, ramen cabbage salad, & rice) Saimen Noodles with Spam (kamaboko, egg slivers, green onions) Spam Musubi Haupia Cheesecake Jello Cheesecake Hawaiian Iced Tea Long overdue review... I've been coming to Back Home in Lahaina in the early 2000s since I started working in the South Bay. With our frequent visits, we were given loyalty stamp cards that earned 3 free rewards after reaching a designated tier: beverage, appetizer, & entrée (usually redeem the Lahaina Fried Chicken Entree) or t-shirt. In the early 2010s, we changed our dining time to their "Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays" after H turned toddler, & brought our friends with kids too. While the longstanding promo is no longer active, they occasionally run holiday or event-based kids eat free specials. Their Keiki (kid's meal) Menu includes: main entrée, side, drink, & dessert... it's a great value for the amount of food! I first learned about Back Home in Lahaina from my bank supervisor who lives in the South Bay. Her family loves the authentic Hawaiian comfort foods, particularly the addicting Lahaina Fried Chicken. It's famous for their slightly sweet, light & crunchy chicken. I love adding a splash of NOH Hawaiian Hot Sauce for a l'il heat! There's 2 specials (Beef Stew Curry, Fish & Chips) that I often order when I see it on the menu. And I always order the curry... love the Japanese-inspired curry roux base with mild heat! Usually posted in the late fall & winter, it's the perfect comfort food to counter the chill! When my husband is hungrier than norm, he'll either add an order of Hawaiian Nachos (they use wonton skins as chips instead of tortillas), or replace the entrée with the Back Home Sampler, which has a bit of everything. We've ordered maybe 1/2 of the menu over the years? Sticking to our favs, & adding other items when we're dining with guests. Their entrées are large enough to share between 2 people, & have been doing so in later years whereas I was hangry enough to eat the whole plate on my own. If you still have room for dessert, Haupia or Jello Cheesecakes are both delish to end your meal. I like the former; it's creamy yet light with a delicate, rich coconut filling. The kiddos love the latter for the strawberry jello that adds a sweet bouncy punch of flavor to the tangy cheesecake. The 1st decade's food & service was excellent, & we dined in so much that we knew most of the servers & can ask for "our usual" before we are seated. The timing is almost seamless from entry to our order to paying our check. Our servers were detailed-oriented to make sure everything is in place after serving our food (extra plates & napkins, necessary condiments), refilling our water with no/little prompts, & bringing our check quickly with necessary boxes when there's leftovers. However, the 2nd decade had its ups & down, especially during the pandemic lockdown (the once spacious dining room was awkward & warm with the plexiglass partitions). Gone are our fav servers, loyalty stamp card, & "Kids Eat Free on Wednesdays." What really kept us from returning often is the lack of consistency in food & service. If we're taking an early dinner around 5:30 PM, sometimes we have to wait awhile because there's no host(ess) at the counter. There may be times when we're seated & there's no server around, or I'm waving the menu to catch their eye. Then there's order execution issues: waiting period from our order to expedition time, not everything is served the relatively the same time, food quality (partly raw chicken, stale wonton chips, overcooked chicken tenders, etc.) & quantity (seems like there's a less?) issues. It's common enough to be a deterrent for frequent repeat visits. But when they're on point, it's the best bang for your buck value for a delish Hawaiian meal! Back Home in Lahaina serves some of the best Hawaiian foods around the South Bay. It's a vibrant community hangout, especially when they host live Hawaiian music (usually on Friday evenings) from regular local acts & guest feature artists! Mahalo! Recommended: Everything on the order list, especially the Lahaina Fried Chicken & Beef Stew Curry.

Hawaiian bbq chicken

Wonderful hospitality and cute gift shop. Chicken thighs were tender and flavorful (used a side of teriyaki sauce). A little underwhelmed by the presentation but it's chicken and rice so I guess I should adjust my expectations. Parking garage was full after the lunch hour but managed to get a quick spot but I could see this being a challenge during lunch time. Overall it was good but not sure I'd go out of my way to go back unless in the area.

5/5 Seating and parking: lots of spacious seating options and there's street parking and a back parking lot 3/5 Chicken long rice soup: a little disappointed it was a little bland but did have a good portion size 3/5 fried chicken entree: this was also surprisingly bland. Very good crunch but not really juicy or flavorful. 3.5/5 macaroni salad: the most seasoned item I had 3/5 cabbage salad: again mostly the low rating just because it was very bland

Loco moco in forefront. Laulau on left. Lomi salmon on right. Hawaiian fried chicken in back.

I forgot to check-in but we just left there and are home now. Food hit the spot and husband who is from Hawaii praised them on the loco moco. Said it was the best one, yet, on this side of America. I had the Hawaiian fried chicken and attacked it that I had almost no room for anything else on my plate. I definitely recommend. Our server forgot to bring us our Portuguese sausage wontons but when he did, they were also delicious.

To start, you need to get the coconut haupia cheesecake. I do not like cheesecake, but this was the lightest, freshest, most wonderful dessert I ordered in 2025. I ordered just the plain haupia pudding, which I was eating outside. One of the guests told me I needed to try the cheesecake, and ended up buying me a slice when he went in to order his food. I am so so thankful for that man because it was really really delicious and I will definitely be back. This place is absolutely amazing. I got a takeout plate and some desserts, but I am so eager to come back to try more of the menu. I got the combo plate with beef, kahlua pork, and chicken katsu. It came with sides of potato mac salad and this AMAZING cabbage slaw that was dressed in an asian sesame vinaigrette. Every bite was literally addicting. I highly highly recommend the takeout for lunch.

The food is great. I love the appetizer platter. Great cakes. Live music this Friday. Disappointed there's no draft beer on a Friday night. Service was a little slow. I love that they have a Togo side and dine in side. Free covered parking in back. Coconut cheesecake was tried and was very very good.

I have been to Hawaii. A friend of mine won a give away by stuffing a ballot box at a grocery store, and then he gave me the plus one ticket. Was it a trip gotten via ill ways? Back then I did not think of that. And now that I do, I say the breeze of Hawaii would help anyone understand that what he did was a youth Indiscretion, like going for a swim in the cloak of darkness while only wearing a lei. Going to Back Home in Lahaina was not a trip back to the Big Island, I won't say that, but it was a moment of joy inspired heavily by a Hawaiian decor that both bordered on the tragically kitsch and the whimsically fun depending on where you stood or sat. But the true treasure of this Hawaiian micro-isle is their fare-- no doubt about that. After the meal my friend Conrad and I went to the front of the house, where they have the to go section. This is where the kitsch became most circus-y. Although, I did not clip everyhing, I did clip a make your own lei kit, hawaiian stickers, and other things that make the place feel like a tourist trap for Hawaiian hopefuls. For me, the tawdry lessened the impact of the Aloha I heard from the dining room. In sharp contrast, the main dining room had this mural of a whale coming out of deep blue water with Hawaiian florals on the edge of the land that was more transportive to the land where coconuts fall from palm trees and hula skirts are a must for every closet. The main room dining room also had these string lights and sphere paper lamps that made me feel like I was eating at a night market where I could see the stars of a Hawaiian skiy but it was both day time, and there was a roof above me. The food was the situation that needs to be address though, with great respect and admiration because almost every bite was supremely good. My friend Conrad and I first shared a Lahaina Platter- basically their appetizer platter or to be Hawaiian their pupu platter, and please do not go for the easy joke it is not that funny and really kind of base and gross, if the wrong person is making it. The must of the spot, unsurprisingly, is their Lahaina fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and kind of like karage chicken but different with the spices and flavors and ocean fronts of Hawaii. I know I did not make sense but I gotta believe that Hawaiian culture made the dish great and Hawaiian culture is partly define by waterfront property. My favorite things from the dish were the Lumpia which are often described as Filipino eggrolls. The pork meat was flavorful, the paper wrapping was on point, like wonderfully thin yet still structurally strong, not crispy, more firm with crisp. The Cinderella story of the day was the spam musubi. The saltiness of the seaweed was present but not in an overblown way, the sweetness of their teriyaki sauce carried savory notes that uplifted the sweet notes, in a wonderful way, their sticky rice was textbook fluffy and fabulous. Overall, I would nitpick flaws. And for this review I do not feel like finding the wrong cracks on a whole coconut skin. My main dish was their bbq grilled chicken plate. I could not finish everything at the restaurant. I had cold left overs at home and they hit the spot in this way that really earned my respect, because cold left overs still holding strong that is like seeing a shooting star while you enoy Mai Tais in a white beach---- living the improbable dream. What was best out of the bunch was their Lahaina chicken. And again, even though the fried goodness had withdrawn, the flavor and textured that remained was still, in a way, intact and in some ways optimal. I just shivered admitting that. I was happy with the food overall, and want to communicate that it was a strong showing for a place that sits within a strip mall. Do not just a shore by the lack of its crashing wave sounds. I also love the name of this place. Like I went back to Lahaina, has personality. Like it is a name that drips from the tongue even though it is long. Pluis, saying multiple times in a conversation makes the place feel important. Conrad had some cheesecake with jello and he loved it. I did not try it, but it was unique and I did not think such a dessert existed. The crust was walnut, I would have thought it would be Macadamia. I definetetly love this place and want to back again soon!

It sure did hit the spot. The food was very good. I haven't been here in a great while but I do remember the short ribs being a little meatier. Nonetheless it was still good. The spam fried rice is a meal by itself. Hawaiian BBQ/Island cuisine at its finest here. I would day it taste like back home in Lahaina. The service was good. Our server came by often and everything came out in a timely manner. It was full but not too packed for a Sunday. I'll be going back sooner than later. The rest rooms are always clean and there's plenty of them.

If you're craving Hawaiian food, this place honestly is even better!! Big portions, traditional flavors, freshly made, affordable prices and the whole experience minus the costs of traveling to Hawaii! I love Hawaiian bbq, we came on Saturday afternoon for lunch and service is prompt and efficient, we were seated right away. Love the vibes and Hawaiian art on the walls. The kalbi short ribs were sooo good and a big portion of more than 3 ribs! The fried chicken is tasty and unique too, kind of a sweeter taste. Overall great place for traditional fresh Hawaiian food, highly recommend!!

This place is located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking. I love the vibes inside. It felt like beachy/Hollister type vibes. The staff was very nice and prompt. Their menu and portion sizes are massive. This is what we ordered. I ordered their poke plate. It comes with three sides usually comes with rice Mac salad or you can substitute for a Chinese chicken salad, which is what I did and a side of fries this plate was awesome, but the dressing that comes with it is a little too powerful kind of like that wasabi mustard type of dressing I'm pretty sure they have other options but next time I'll know my friend ordered one of their combo plates, which was also huge massive portions with the meat, a wonton soup and the appetizer sampler. The fried chicken that came with the appetizer sampler and the combo plate was phenomenal. It was like a cross between Filipino chicken, adobo and fried goodness and I've never had anything like it and I highly recommend it if you're looking to kill your hunger love big portions & comfort cooking This is the place for you probably one of the top tier Hawaiian places I've been to so far.

I especially appreciate them selling poke by the quarter pound. Absolutely no one else does that. We tried three different pokes (shoyu, Cali Hawaiian and Garlic Spicy) and they were all delicious. The Cali Hawaiian had krab in it, which was a little unusual but not unwelcome. Definitely ask the employees for recommendations. Free parking in the lot. I would happily return.

Honu Poke & Grill -- Lomita, CA…read more 1824 Lomita Blvd, Lomita, CA Honu Poke & Grill is a small, cozy Hawaiian-style restaurant located in a shopping plaza near the intersection of Western Ave. and Lomita Blvd. PARKING & LOCATION One thing to be mindful of is that the parking lot is currently undergoing renovations. From the looks of it, they may be installing a Tesla charging station in the center of the plaza. Some areas are fenced off, so parking and navigating the lot may be a little inconvenient until construction is completed. ATMOSPHERE & SEATING The restaurant has a small, Hawaiian-inspired interior with tropical decorations. Seating is limited to four tables accommodating four people each and two additional tables seating two people each. There is a self-service water station, but no soda fountain. Also, there are no restrooms available for customers. My biggest complaint about the dining experience was the indoor temperature. I visited during this October heatwave, and even before noon, the restaurant was already uncomfortably warm. With all the fluorescent lighting turned on and the refrigerated poke display cases potentially contributing additional heat, it felt like the temperature continued rising. I'm not exaggerating when I say I was actually sweating while sitting there eating my lunch! Better air conditioning or ventilation would definitely make the dine-in experience much more enjoyable, especially during warmer days. MENU & PRICING They offer a good selection of Hawaiian-style poke, including Hawaiian Shoyu, Hawaiian Limu, California Hawaiian, Spicy Mayo, Spicy Garlic, Salmon Shoyu, Salmon Limu, Salmon Sweet Spicy, Spicy Garlic Salmon, and Salmon Spicy Mayo. Poke bowls range approximately from $14.45 to $15.95, while poke plates range from $15.45 to $16.45. For this visit, I ordered: * Combo Poke Plate -- Hawaiian Shoyu & Hawaiian Limu * Loco Moco -- $15.95 * Hawaiian Sun POG COMBO POKE PLATE -- HAWAIIAN SHOYU & HAWAIIAN LIMU Both selections tasted fresh, which is definitely something I appreciate when eating poke. The Hawaiian Shoyu had a nice flavor, and the Hawaiian Limu was equally fresh-tasting. The plate came with two scoops of white rice topped with furikake seasoning. Overall, I enjoyed both poke selections, and they were a highlight of my meal. LOCO MOCO -- $15.95 Something worth mentioning is that the Loco Moco is made to order, and I was informed there would be approximately a 20-minute wait. So if you're in a hurry, keep that in mind. The Loco Moco comes with two scoops of rice, sunny-side-up eggs, hamburger patties, and a generous amount of brown gravy. The hamburger patties were smaller, almost like mini slider-sized patties. What I appreciated was that they tasted handmade and nicely seasoned rather than like the typical frozen, pre-made patties. The patties were practically swimming in gravy! Now, the gravy itself had good flavor, but the consistency was definitely on the watery side. I'm talking almost soup-like consistency. If you scooped some up with a spoon and tilted it, the gravy would immediately run right off. Personally, I prefer my Loco Moco gravy to be a little thicker, with enough consistency to coat the hamburger patties and rice rather than just pooling around everything. That being said, the flavor was there, so it wasn't necessarily a bad gravy, just not my preferred consistency. The rice was good, and so were the sunny-side-up eggs. However, the eggs were cooked a little longer than I personally prefer. The yolks were approximately half solid and half runny. When I order sunny-side-up eggs, I like the yolks nice and runny so I can break them and mix everything together with the rice, hamburger patties, and gravy. Still enjoyable, but a slightly runnier yolk would have made it better for me. OVERALL EXPERIENCE Honu Poke & Grill offers a nice variety of Hawaiian-style poke along with other local favorites such as Loco Moco. The Hawaiian Shoyu and Hawaiian Limu poke tasted fresh, and I appreciated the homemade taste and seasoning of the Loco Moco patties. The gravy had good flavor despite being thinner than I prefer, and the eggs were just slightly overcooked for my liking. My biggest issue wasn't necessarily the food but the dining environment. Sitting inside a restaurant sweating while trying to enjoy lunch isn't exactly a comfortable experience. The lack of a customer restroom is another inconvenience worth mentioning. Would I come back? I would consider returning for the poke, but on another hot day, I'd probably opt for takeout rather than dining inside. Good food overall, with some room for improvement, especially when it comes to indoor comfort.

It's one of those places where the people and the food make you feel at home. This visit, we ordered two mixed plates: one with furikake chicken and roast pork, and another with garlic shrimp and Korean chicken. I usually stick with the furikake chicken plate, but I wanted to switch things up and try something different. There is an upcharge for beef or shrimp on the mixed plates, which feels a little steep to me, but I was willing to pay it this time to see how the garlic shrimp compared. The furikake chicken is a staple for a reason. The flavor and texture are usually consistent, and this visit was no exception. I've had one previous visit where the chicken was a little tough, but this time it was solid and exactly what I hoped for. This was also my first time trying the roast pork, and honestly, broke da mouth. It ended up being one of the highlights of the meal and something I'd definitely order again. The garlic shrimp had good flavor, but my only gripe was having to deal with the shells. They do let you know when ordering that the shrimp comes shell-on, so it wasn't a surprise, just a personal preference. I enjoyed it, but between the shells and the upcharge, I'd probably choose something else next time. The Korean chicken also had good flavor, though it was a little too salty for my taste. Next time, I'm going straight for the mixed plate with furikake chicken and roast pork. That combination was definitely onolicious. Even with a couple of things that weren't quite my preference, it was still a great visit. If you're craving Hawaiian food and a little taste of home, I'd definitely recommend Auntie Maile's.

Now, I must admit l, I was surprised by the super delicious macaroni salad. The mac salad is superbly seasoned with spices. I could detect a hint of pepper, which balanced the flavor of the salad. While waiting for my delicious food, there was a band outside, playing entertaining music. The food was delicious, seasoned and served with abundance of flavor. All while I enjoyed the sounds of Hawaii in the air. All I can say is, "Aloha!"

My order came with 2 beef bone, short rib, mac salad, and white rice. The beef ribs were so flavorful and falls right off the bone! The meat is so tender and juicy. Prolly the best ribs I ever had! It's a hole in a wall spot and definitely would come back to support this place!!

If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be hugged by a plate of food, 808 Local Hawaiian…read moreGrill has the answer. This spot is small, casual in the best way, the kind of place where you walk in stressed from work and walk away knowing the food will comfort you. The moment you step in, you get that "bro, relax" energy. No crazy décor, no weird mood lighting, no host judging your outfit. Just good food, good vibes, and the faint spiritual presence of someone whispering "aloha, braddah." It's the type of place where you can roll in wearing gym shorts, flip‑flops, or your "I woke up late" face and nobody blinks. Service here is like being adopted into a Hawaiian family you didn't know you had. They're friendly without being fake, fast without rushing you, and they actually smile, like real smiles, not the "my manager is watching" kind. They hand you your food like they're handing you a blessing. I swear one plate winked at me. Listen... the food is delish. The kalua pork and beef is so tender it should come with a warning label. The teriyaki chicken tastes like it was marinated in the tears of happy island angels. And the mac salad? Bro... that mac salad could solve arguments, reunite families, and end global beef. Portions are generous, like "I didn't need all this but I'm absolutely finishing it" generous. Miguel C.

We were greeted by the friendly staff who took good care of us from start to finish. The cozy dining room had a warm island atmosphere. I ordered bacon fried rice topped with two over easy eggs. The portion was huge, easily enough for two or as a second meal for leftovers. There was a generous amount of bacon in the fried rice. The eggs were perfectly cooked and oozed warm yolk over the flavorful fried rice after chopping up the eggs. This was the ultimate comfort food and was so satisfying. My friends ordered kimchi and chashu fried rice. I tried the kimchi fried rice and was blown away by how good it was! I'll be ordering that next time. Overall, Gardena Bowl Coffee Shop was awesome! It won't be long before I go back to explore more of their large selection of comfort food.

Why has no one told me about this gem??…read more As soon as you enter the restaurant, it feels like your grandparents home. I mean that as a compliment, follow my train of thought now. There is so much love, so much heart that is put into the food. Additionally, the amount of food is coma sending. I finished the food and was so ready to take a nap in the warm weather. It's literally like eating grandma's food when youre a young child. The spicy tuna came out first and we were shocked at how delicious the fish was. There wasn't a lot of rice which I appreciated and that fish had a bit of a kick. Pair that with some wasabi shoyu and you're tasting some real goodness. The spam musubi was solid with the furikake. My only gripe was that it had a bit too much rice which could have been better balanced with a thicker slice of spam. Regardless, it was solid. Now the star was the chicken combo. Boy oh boy, that Ladybug Fried Chicken was amazing. The batter had so much flavor and added to the juicy chicken. Pair that with you salad and mac salad.. oh my.. youre tasting a slice of Heaven! Fair warning, there is some grinded celery in the mac salad, so if youre allergic then let them know. Otherwise, that aroma of celery added so much depth to the mac. I can't emphasize enough, there is so much love in the food and the servers take gooooood care of you. It was also amazing to see how much attention to detail the owners put in the restaurant. There is ladybug decor all throughout the place and hand drawn papers from customers. It was really neat to see how much love they receive from their customers.
