It had been over two years since I had been here. It was well worth the 18 mile trip this time! Starting off at the salad bar, the Cole slaw, potato salad and some other salad , not quite sure what it was very tasty and fresh! I went up to the food bar, bypassing the cheese and pickles grabbed some mashed potatoes, ham ( man that ham was oh so tender and so juicy!) and a chicken breast. Then a dilemma hits me should those mashed taters be adorned with that sauerkraut staring me in the face, or turn around ad grab me some of that sausage gravy from tHe breakfast bar? I decided gravy wins this time, I'll come back a little later for the kraut and taters. But I also grabbed me a couple pieces of that HEAVENLY orange pound cake/ bread whatever it was, and headed back to the table. I'm telling you there wasn't anything on my plate I did not like and everything was fresh moist and. OH SO GOOOOOD! Ok so I sit back for a breather look up at the taters.... and think..... just then a party of 26 walked up to the bar, oh well I really didn't need any more taters, but I'm betting they would of been awesome with that sauerkraut! So I head over to the desert bar, grab a couple cookies, piece of apple pie , some kind of apple something that looked like banana pudding, and a piece of bread pudding slathered in warm caramel sauce! Well folks I probably should of passed over those cookies because I had to turn back that last bite of the chocolate chip cookie! I just about told management to call 911 to gurney me out of there. We took a mini road trip and sought this place out due to Yelp reviews and it being listed on "Only in your State" website. Upon arrival there was a employee sitting outside enjoying her break and she welcomed us. I thought that was nice, she could have just ignored us as she was taking a break. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Asked if this was our first time and offered to walk us around the buffet. I thought the food was pretty good for a buffet. On a recent road trip we stopped here to check the place out, drawn in by the collection of antiques and railroad memorabilia decorating their property. We should have checked out Yelp first! We quickly learned it's a buffet style restaurant serving no alcohol/beer. We opted for the $5.95 dessert bar and beverage since we were not looking for a full meal. There was a fairly good selection of pies, bread pudding, hand dipped ice cream and cookies to select from. We tried the apple and cherry pie and bread pudding. Quality was what you can expect of a buffet place...not memorable. There is plenty to see and check out inside if you have an interest in history or antiques. Quite an eclectic collection of items including items like railroad, cigar store Indians, and Burma Shave roadsigns. Unfortunately this collection and decor also gives a unpleasant odor to the place, in my opinion, that made my eating experience less enjoyable. It's a musty, old odor that may not bother most but for me was overwhelming the day we visited. We have no plans to visit there again. read more

Seafood buffet on Friday night featuring all you can eat crab legs, prime rib, shrimp, clams and ham. Salad bar was stocked quite well with multiple choices of ingredients. I did not have much room lefft for desserts, but I sampled a few of the choices. They were all good. They had an attendant there to dip the ice cream out for you. They had about 8 different flavors and it seemed to be a high quality ice cream. Price for the seafood buffet was $21.95. Apparently the buffet is less on other nights. read more

We were excited about visiting here after reading about this place. The food was not good (tasty) and the variety less than you would think. I was disappointed when the person carving the meat gave me such a small portion (and I mean really small) but was glad when I tasted it because I hate to waste food and I would have wasted it because it was not very good. She had a terrible attitude also. They didn't put out any fried chicken until we were ready to go. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. This is the absolute best family buffet ever! My boyfriend and I love it. The brisket is so tender it just melts in your mouth. You can get ribeye just the way you like it. The crab legs on Friday are so good you don't even need the melted butter. It is so delicious with a lot of home style entrees and sides. You should definitely go here. It's very worth it. read more

We go to football games in Muncie since we are season ticket holders for Ball State Football. One of the places we used to go to was Welliver's Restaurant in Hagerstown, once a year and it was the premier buffet in Indiana. Well, that closed several years ago and is now under new ownership. But, we live in Fort Wayne and during this time, we also stopped into the Back 40 Junction in Decatur instead on our way back home one year. I can honestly say that the Back 40 is equal to if not better than the old Welliver's was. Flash forward to 2012. We go here several times a year ever since we discoverd it years ago--usually, once every three months or so. We always enjoy the seafood buffet on Friday nights--huge snow crab clusters, not overcooked, and plenty of them. So many places feature seafood and fail to keep the pans filled. Not so with the Back 40. And the other selections of food have always been consistently good as well--the salad bar, the cheese bar, the main food line, and the dessert offerings. The staff is attentive, the decor is great fun, and the drinks are refilled promptly. We went back about a month ago, and the food remains outstanding. I know Midwest Living featured Welliver's in its magazine in the late 90's. I wish they'd do a review of the Back 40 Junction in Decatur. My only advice if you do decide to go and if your party is less than 6 in number is to go early. Reservations are now only for larger groups of people. read more

Now I don't know how often you go out for dinner in Decatur Indiana, but if you find yourself there and feel like having a good meal, this is the place to go. It's a buffet, maybe you don't like buffets, but I do. I also like cafeterias. I really enjoy looking at my food before having it plated up. How often do you sit waiting for your meal and out comes a plate of something really delicious looking placed on the table next to you? That doesn't happen at a buffet or cafeteria. Found this place reading an article on Yahoo about the best buffets in every state. After seeing this was about an hour away I decided to give it a try and glad I did. It's a meat lovers paradise and I'm a meat lover! Hand carved prime rib, beef brisket, ham, and turkey, plus fried and baked chicken, fish & breaded shrimp. All the sides you can want plus a good salad bar. The staff is excellent. Always filling our drinks and clearing away the plates. A little pricey for a buffet at $16 a plate, but that's a steal for all that meat!! read more

We do not normally enjoy buffets. This is one of the best. The food was fresh, hot and delicious. Fried chicken (not legs n thighs) was crispy and not greasy, prime rib was rare, great taste and not chewy, turkey breast moist n tender... i could keep going but you have to try it yourself!! Good place for a buffet. Not many choices for children, nice meat selection beef & pork rib tips, prime rib, turkey, ham and fish. Good salad bar and side selections. So almost a couple of years have gone by and I've revised my opinion a little. Because of the nature of my work, I find I eat here for business. The lunch is reasonable and massive. I now see that the hot veggies are not canned (perhaps some are?) on the most part. I do like the turkey, which I have almost every time I come. I wish there were vegetarian alternatives for entrees, such as veggie lasagna or eggplant parm or some other a meatless pasta, but there is not. I still believe the cheese and pickle area is surpassed by none. The dessert bar is just plain comfort food. While the hot buffet is good, it is not outstanding. I still won't come here for the pricy holidays, but will come here for a regular business lunch. You can't beat the selection in town. read more

We ate here for the first time in probably 2 years used to be one of our favorites. But today everything my family and I tried or seen was boarder line revolting, and tasteless. And for some reason this time we were there it had a musty odor ( very unappealing ). When I decided to get up to use the restroom and find our server I looked over and seen her and another employee playing on their phone and the other was looking at a magazine sitting right in the middle of the dinning room at a table. Great place for Lunch or Dinner. A large selection of meats, vegetables, breads and cheeses. Also a well stocked salad and desert bar. Prices are reasonable considering the quality quantity is no problem considering this is a buffet style eating establishment. This is one of the best buffet style dining experiences in this part of Indiana. Waitresses are very attentive and fast to top off your drink or just chat. There is no comparison to other buffets such as Sirloin Stockade or Kings and Yummy's. This place is in a class of it's own. Their selection of breads and cheeses have no rival throughout this area. And their deserts are all homemade. They usually have between 3 to 5 types of quality meat selections to choose from and a large selection of vegetables. Loved this place! The railroad theme and decor is interesting, with lots of Burma Shave roadside signs strewn about. Food was above average; the fried chicken melts in your mouth. I thought it tasted a lot like the original Colonel Sanders. They have all sorts of little specialty items on a huge buffet; dips, cheeses, and an assortment of homemade candied and dill pickles that I really couldn't stop returning for more. Service was outstanding and friendly. The only negative is the tables are a bit too close together, forcing you to turn sideways many times to get past other diners on the way to and from the buffet tables. read more

We went in last Wednesday, the prime rib was rare to raw, the brisket burnt, and the roast beef was grainy and of poor color. The desserts, cookies and pie, were old and stale. Cheese tray had turned color. If they only put new food out on weekends, maybe they should only be open weekends. They charge for babies even though the child has no teeth and was on baby food??? I downloaded Yelp before I got out of the parking lot simply for this review, especially since the experience is very fresh on my mind. Stopped in on the way home and couldn't be more pleased. We stopped in at a time that you wouldn't imagine the food to be so fresh, right between lunch and dinner time. Boy, were we wrong. It was all very fresh and an amazing selection. I began taking smaller portions so I could try more, since this restaurant is several hours from home it will be a while before I can come back, but you can bet if I am in the area I will stop again. The staff was unbeatable, as friendly and down-home as they get. So much so that I felt obliged to tip both the waitress and the General Manager who took very good care of serving us and assisting us. If you leave enough room for dessert, the peach ice cream is utterly delightful. Without a doubt the best ice cream I've ever had, and I've had a lot of ice cream. 5/5, 10/10, 100/100 on the experience. I haven't even touched on the charming decor of the place, but I can leave the rest for you to decide. Very recommended. read more
