Do not contact this school if you are looking for a babysitter for your pre-school children. They might actually try to show them how to hold a musical instrument or expose them to medieval scrawls they claim are a "musical staff and notes." They know nothing about feeding time for 2-year-olds. I know a 3-year old can't even hold a Stratocaster let alone move the whammy bar unless they are already standing in the Ace Frehley position. They should know that a Fender Mustang is the best-suited guitar for any child 4 or under, the radius is a loving 9.5 and if you put 9s on one, it plays like buttah. And an acoustic guitar is too big for a 4-year-old, mine couldn't even get her hand around the long cross bow handle thing with the plinky wires on it. Go to another school if you actually expect your child to be well-fed and have clean hands when you pick them up. read more

Bach to Rock is such a cool place! Our 5-year old active son LOVED his rock camp and it showed in his daily experience and feedback, and the culminating demonstration on the last day. The teachers are not only talented musicians but also kind and effective childcare providers, and that's a hard needle to thread. We also enjoyed seeing some of the other musical genres being explored around the office. We are planning to return for more camps and play days! read more

I enrolled my daughter about 5yrs ago, into kids n keys. She continued on to private piano, vocal, drum lessons and a camp. I started taking guitar lessons with them a little over 2yrs ago. We are consistently challenged, inspired, and motivated to play. They have flexible scheduling and always do their best to work with my kids evolving schedule. My daughter has displayed confidence in music/theory that her teachers at school have commented on. I can only credit B2R for that. If you're interested in being involved in something cool? Can't say enough about the amazing staff and the facility. I have been taking drum lessons for a few months, and the lessons are consistently the highlight of my week. My instructor, Indigo, is a very patient teacher and an incredibly skilled drummer. He makes learning fun, and will try different techniques to help me understand and advance my skills. The whole atmosphere is great, and the staff encourages students to have fun, try new things, and learn to play the music you are most interested in. Everyone has been fantastic from the front desk, the instructors and management. The facility is really cool, with rooms for bands to play, rooms for private lessons, as well as a full stage performance room, and a recording studio. You can't go wrong here. read more

ROCK CITY CLASS UNSUITABLE FOR PRESCHOOLERS 1. The class times for the Rock City class are 11:30, 4:30, and 6:30. Preschoolers are usually hungry and eat lunch about 11:30 and then usually nap after lunch. A 4:30 class is usually when parents and preschoolers are arriving home from the day and starting dinner. Preschoolers are tired at this time too. A 6:30 class is when most preschoolers are getting in a bath and getting ready for bed. I know for the most part, preschoolers are in bed by 8:00 pm. None of these times for classes are appropriate for preschool aged children. 2. There is no where for parents/nannys/caregivers to sit and watch their child learn music. The school is set up with a lobby in the front of the school while the class is around and corner and in the back of the class. I stayed and watched a class through a glass window. 3. The music teacher conducting the class has zero class management nor training in teaching preschoolers/early childhood classes. I have written my experience below and there I have pointed out many examples of why I make these statements. 4. The lesson given in the class my son attended that I observed was too advanced for preschoolers. Christy, the music teacher, was teaching preschoolers (ages 3-4) HOW TO READ MUSIC! Preschoolers can't even read English yet, why on earth would they be able to read something as abstract and advanced and musical notes. 5. The classroom in which the class is conducted isn't appropriate for children. It is set up like a stage with professional music equipment which the children are not allowed to touch or handle. I understand why since musical instrument are very expensive and fragile but this is my whole point. The school is not set up or equipped to handle preschoolers. 6. The school requires you to pay $19.00 just to try the class. If all of this doesn't convince you that the school needs a major reevaluation of it's preschool program, please read my experience that as been sent and read by the school's owner, Rick Walker. To Whom It May Concern: I wanted to express my major disappointment in a class my son attended today to someone who can do something. My son was at the 11:30 preschool class with Christy. Firstly, there is no place for the parents to sit and watch their child. Every other art, dance, music, and baseball class my child has attended has seating for parents to watch. Secondly, Christy has zero management or preschool/early childhood training. I am sure she is a fantastic musician and music teacher to older kids but she clearly has no experience dealing with young children - which the class is for. The room is set up like a stage and has professional instruments and is unsuitable for children in the first place. Christy handed the children a xylophone without any explanation of what it was or what they were going to do with them. After she gave them the instruments, the children naturally started playing with them and it was then she said they couldn't play with them yet. In any sort of lesson with children, the first thing they want to do is explore and play with it. Once they have done that, they are more ready to listen and learn. Even with this horrible teaching method, my son still listened and followed directions. However, there was one child in particular that was uncontrollable. When he would not follow directions, Christy threaten all the other kids (who were following directions), that NO ONE was going to be able to play. Also, Christy spent 75% of the class time chasing after that same child. He was jumping on and off the stage, touching the guitars, opening and shutting the classroom door. She gave him no warnings of "if you touch the guitars again, you will have to sit out for 5 minutes". Basic stuff! Every other child in that class was following directions but they were not able to play or get the full class time because of that one child. Christy should have reached out to the boy's mother and explained he is not ready for the class. Also, Christy dumped a bunch of tubes in the middle of the class once again with no explanation of what they were or what they were going to do with them. The preschoolers did what all preschoolers do and started playing with them like swords. The menace child started hitting every other kids with them. After about 30 minutes of watching this debacle my friend (who also was trying the class today with her son) and I pulled our kids out of the class." The owner called both of us and apologized. He stated that classes are not usually conducted this way. I am not sure how since he doesn't have music teachers equipped with the proper training in dealing with preschoolers. We are not going back despite his apology. There are many, many music classes in our area that are appropriate for preschoolers. I hope this helps. ROCKING IT! THIS IS SO MUCH FUN! I so enjoy going to Bach to Rock for my weekly guitar lessons. I am repeatedly impressed and amazed by the knowledge and ability of my instructor Peter E. He has helped me make great strides in refining my understanding of music theory, proper technique, performance, and improving my composition. My performance in my band has continued to grow as a result of my experience at this amazing local music school. The vibe is so cool and motivating. Bach to Rock is absolutely AMAZING!! My 10 year old son loves it so much, he would seriously be there every day if he could. As a parent, I can't tell you how awesome it is to see your child so enthusiastic about going to music lessons and to be learning so much so quickly. Everyone who works at B2R is an incredible professional working musician. They are young, fun, energetic and really connect with all the kids at their appropriate age-level. My son loves both of his instructors (Peter and Sean), as well as all of the staff there. (He literally would talk to them for hours about music if he could). My son plays guitar, bass, and is in a Rock Band with B2R. B2R is also so closely connected to the local music scene and the kids' bands are always being booked at different age-appropriate venues. It is SO cool they really get to play out as a band. Peter, their band instructor is incredible with them. He is able to teach them an entire song in a one-hour session. They just recently became a level 2 Rock Band and have only been playing together one -hour a week for 4 months. They play out a few times a month and it is so amazing to watch what these kids have accomplished in such a short period of time. Rick, the owner, is such a great guy. He runs an awesome business truly focused on customer service. He is so supportive of his staff and the kids, always ensuring they have fun while they are learning to become musicians. We have been so fortunate to have our son be part of such an amazing place. We are so lucky to have it in Encinitas. This review doesn't even come close to conveying how great this program has been for our son. Bach to Rock is a true gem. We love our instructors and the owner, Rick. Everyone has been very kind and made us feel like family from our very first lesson. We've been coming for about 9 months and have always left with a good feeling about music and learning new instruments. My 10 year old had never played guitar when we started and is now performing in a rock band through Bach to Rock. My 6 year old, although not as much of a music lover, has enjoyed her piano class and has made friends through the school. My son was interested and took DJ lessons at this school as a birthday gift to him. He has been taking private piano lessons from two different teachers for 8 years and is musically inclined. He picked up DJing very quickly with his teacher, but the studio was unprofessional. Their main concern was to get kids in and out of the studio. Bach to Rock does not cushion lessons to discuss with parents progress, nor do they cushion lessons for transition time. We were always early, never got into class on time, yet were dismissed on time (once early). My son's teacher scrambled for an empty room in the beginning of class, every time, taking more time away from actual lessons. As a parent of two children that take piano lessons, I have seen professionalism in the music lesson industry and it's not here. My children go to another local music studio (California Music Studios) that truly values children's education of music, before their bottom line. read more
