What started out as a late lunch while discovering the hillside town of Peccioli. We had ducked in to pick a few pastries from the shining cold-case, and saw that there we tables open, so we said..."Wanna...?" We were so impressed with the food, the savory waffle, the steak tartar, the cheesecake and pastries. The atmosphere and loving family service made us feel like we were locals who had stopped into our regular place. We finished with a rich cup of coffee and Ferretti's famous Biscotti. Those biscotti are sooooo delicious that we had to buy a couple of containers of them for the road.... they traveled with us throughout Italy and we hoarded them for morning coffee each day. Our waiters were the sons of the owners, and they were so charming. They shared with us some of their own travels, especially in the U.S. (our home). Our advice; roam the farmers' market in the town square and, right there, stop into Pasticceria Ferretti. They even have a nice sidewalk seating area in that pedestrian only area. P.S. The town has a great parking garage with a famous modern-art foot bridge.... memorable, photogenic!

It's a short walk from the centre of town, nothing in Palaia is very far away! We read a lot about the view, and while the view from Palaia is stunning in general, you can't see quite as much of it from the patio, especially if you aren't right up against the edge. We started with antipasti for two which was a massive, massive portion of meat, cheese, olives, and bread. It was all delicious, but if we'd finished it we'd have been stuffed. Know that before ordering! They don't play around with antipasto in Italy. Save it for a big group, or pair it with just a pasta maybe. We followed it up with a pasta to share, and a steak. The steak wasn't nearly as rare as we'd liked, although it did have great flavor. If you want it rare, you have to ask (we thought that was a Tuscan thing, but apparently the super-rare steak is specifically Florentine and you won't necessarily get it in other places). A side of beans, and we were stuffed and happy. The menu here is made up of affordable, reliable, and filling Tuscan classics. Along with the loads of outdoor seating and relaxed atmosphere, this is a great place for a meal - and we didn't have to book on a Friday! But you probably should in cold weather if the patio is closed.

We walked here from our hotel -- about a 10-minute walk -- and we arrived to find the place packed with reservations in waiting. They still managed to get us in! That's customer service! Fabio took care of us, along with another young lady whose name I did not catch. They were spectacular. I'm a Texas guy, and we eat beef for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was impressed with the Steak Florentine here. It was tender and was mildly flavored with herbs and butter. The roasted potatoes were OK. The cannellini beans in tomato sauce almost stole the show. What a wonderful combination of meaty white beans and sweet tomato sauce! And the tiramisu was divine. This place was packed on our visit, and it is no surprise, because they are very good at what they do. Still, it was comfy, and we were well taken care of.

Nonetheless, getting a reservation within their allotted window was actually quite easy. As soon as we arrived, we KNEW the sunset would be unrivaled. It was the perfect Tuscan sunset. I'll start with the food: fantastic. We had the ragu, a beef filet, steak carpaccio, and marinated tomatoes. zero complaints - everything was perfectly simple and truly delicious. The service was next level: from the giant glass of digestif presented to my father-in-law for his birthday to the round of complimentary desserts and limoncello, the service was full of joy! As we left, our server was sharing some personal tales with us. He really bonded with my father-in-law and ended up gifting him a bottle of wine that had familial significance/connection between us! We were so grateful for this special experience and have the signed bottle sitting out still today.
