I traveled to Bacchus Winery with my family since tasting times were clearly posted as starting at 1pm. We were approached by the person behind the counter and told that a class was in progress and that we would be served when the tasting hour began at 1pm. We waited patiently until about 1:20pm, and even purchased some food to eat while we waited. Several other customers came and went while we sat. I saw none being approached by this person behind the counter, who, granted, was teaching a multiple person winemaking class of about 12 people or so. We left without buying any wine or doing a tasting since the class still continued. My husband left an honest review with our experiences in order to inform the community of what our expectations were and of what we encountered. The owner has sent him an offensive private message accompanied by a demand to remove this honest review and an offensive reply on this platform. I have worked in retail for 20 years, many of them in a small business setting and 5 years as a manager of a small, local business. This is NOT an acceptable response to an honest customer review. I would seek out any feedback, positive or negative, as a way to improve the way our business served our community. I love and patronize small businesses and spend purposefully at those I visit so that they may continue to enrich the culture of the areas they support. If you are not able to do tastings when a class is in session, post signage that says the same. We had no idea a class would be in session. If you are unable to interact with customers during class times, do not be surprised if some are unsatisfied. I have worked in retail during the recession, during COVID, and during the painful recovery process all small businesses faced. Shame on you for your poor customer service, and for your offensive post. read more

My wife and I have been coming to Bacchus Winery for a quite a few years now. A friend of ours sent us a Groupon for a wine tasting which we put off using for almost a year. Hal actually called us and reminded us that we had the Groupon. That was pretty awesome of him to take the time to call us when he could've just collected the free money from an unused Groupon. We had no clue what we were getting ourselves into, but looking back, it was the best Groupon gift we've ever received! We have since taken 6 wine making classes at Bacchus Winery and it's all because of how the owner, Hal, treats us and everyone around him! This man has a ton of knowledge (30+ years if I remember correctly) and patience, which is well needed with some of the classes we've been a part of. Lol!! I've seen a few people from his classes start businesses, plant vineyards and even other winery owners getting a few tips. Hal has helped them all and makes himself very available to each student that takes his classes. The classes usually start at 10am and end at 1pm but depending on which stage of the wine making process the class in, it can go past 1pm or end a little early. I've seen plenty of customers come into the winery around 1pm and Hal will greet them and either serve them or explain that it's going to be a little wait so he can finish up with the class. With that being said, I can promise you the wait is well worth it!!! The wines that Hal makes in his winery are top notch! They also serve slushies that seem to be a fan favorite at all the events I've been to. Hal is very open to questions and discussions about his wines and others. Bacchus Winery is a unique experience that has something for everyone's palate. Be prepared to leave with a bottle or two! read more

My husband and I have been going to wine tastings and visiting wineries for several years now. Our neighbors introduced us to the art of wine making at Bacchus over 5 years ago, that was when we were curious about taking a class to learn how to make wine ourselves. The experience of learning about the grape and how it is cultivated into wine was enough for us to keep coming back. We even return for an occasional wine tasting when our parents come to town. While it does get busy, the owner works as hard as he can to ensure everyone is accommodated. I worked in retail several years ago for a family business and I understand the nature of maintaining clientele and meeting the demands of the business. Considering the circumstances of the changes in shopping habits and the habits of customers making it out to storefronts post-COVID, I can understand challenges from both managing the business to receiving outstanding customer service. I can only imagine as business manager what that experience was like to ensure sustainability of a business during these difficult times while our economy continues to repair. I was introduced to Bacchus Winery from an outside source and have become hooked. That was over 2 years ago. I have made wine with Hal and have even committed to buying a full case of the 2020 chardonnay once bottled. During every and all business transaction Hal (the owner) has been nothing but professional. To those saying he is racist I say this: in the past 2 years we have conversed both professionally and personally. Being as we are two very different people from different generations do I ALWAYS agree with his opinions? No. Does he ALWAYS agree with mine? Probably not. But that is the BEAUTY of being human. The ability to think and feel and learn and change. To disagree without hate, to find common loves without judgement. As a business I have nothing but praise for Bacchus Winery. What a gem of a find when I found this place many years ago. Hal is so knowledgeable, warm, friendly and inviting. Makes you feel at home in his shop. I have even taken 2 classes with him to make both wine and hard grape soda. You don't just go through the motions, but he truly educates you on the process, the history and even his personal experiences with the subject matter. I believe he has put his heart and soul into this business, a second career, not to make millions, but rather to share his knowledge, and quite simply make and offer superior products for people to enjoy. If you want to learn how to make great when this is the winery to go to. I signed my wife and I up for a class last year and had so much fun that we signed up for another class this year. Hal is a great teacher and cook! He encouraged us to entry our first wine into an international wine competition and our wine won bronze. During the class we got to taste the wines being made at the winery and I have not had a bad one yet. For those of you that have been drinking wine in Virginia know what I mean. For the price Bacchus has some great wines comparable in taste to the more expensive wines from the west coast. This is a must stop on your Virginia wine trail trip this fall. read more

I purchased two bottles of the Peach Apricot Chardonnay for a long awaited get together with my husbands childhood friend and his wife. She had brought a bottle with her but I told her about Bacchus Winery and this new flavor. We both thought it was the best wine we have ever tasted. Needless to say, we finished the bottle before the night was over. I hope Hal continues to make this flavor and many others like it!! Every bottle I purchase has been exceptional! We arrived at 12:40 one Sunday, apparently in the middle of a wine making class (Not noted on their web site). we were told we could wait until class was over at 1 to do a tasting. we came up to the counter a few times to order a glass but no one came to help us. though the class was told to us to end at 1, at one they were preparing to eat a cheese plate and wine pairing as part of the class. Had to interrupt the only employee there/wine class teacher to pay for the few snacks we had helped ourselves to per the signage. Finally left at 1:15 without any service. read more

A friend and I stumbled upon Bacchus one day. We couldn't be more happy that we did! We were so warmly welcomed by the owners. We sat down for our (free!!) tasting. We mentioned we like sweet wines. We were treated to an amazing array of delicious wines, reds and whites! We were able to watch a couple learn to make their own wine. If you are interested in making your own wine, Bacchus offers classes. If you are experienced in making your own wine, but don't have the space to do it in your home, come to Bacchus!! Great winery experience. The vintner is on site and is incredibly knowledgeable about all facets of winemaking. I have been making kit wine for several years and Bacchus has an excellent selection and great prices. You can sample a wide variety of wines before purchasing the kits - no more ordering on line and hoping for the best. If you're new to home winemaking Bacchus even offers classes where the master vintner walks you through the entire process. Just do it! You'll get a great hobby that results in wine that is better than you can imagine. read more

Awesome time every week for the past five years! My wife and I started with taking a wine-making class that far exceeded our expectations!! Ever since, we have been proud to be part of the Bacchus family! The food and service are "top shelf" always!! A trip to Bacchus is now a tradition when my in-luvs come to town! From the moment you walk in, Hal makes you feel like family. Hal is so kind and so friendly and recognizes us every time we visit. He offers a free wine tasting while visiting and shares with us his knowledge about each and every wine. This place deserves way more than 5 stars. We were gifted a wine making class for Christmas by our two sons. Not knowing what to expect, we jumped in headfirst. We just finished our 5 of 6 classes and could not be anymore happier!! Hal and Stephanie are a true delight and joy to learn from. The classes have been fun and entertaining. Hal also provides gourmet food samplings at the end of the class along with wine. The wine is outstanding!! We will definitely be attending more classes and of course, buying more of Bacchus wine. read more

The owner, Hal, is very attentive with his clients. In addition, he is very family oriented, always welcome our kids. I grow Kiowa blackberries and several varieties of elderberries, and his coaching has been absolutely exceptional as I try to continually improve my blackberry and elderberry wines.
