They went above and beyond the level of service I expect from stores in the garment district. I made the mistake of trying to pick out items on my own. I'm thoroughly out of practice with sewing and picked out about 10 spools of heavyweight thread in assorted colors before the owner corrected me. He didn't give me an attitude that he had to put back the 10 spools, which I would have deserved anyway. The prices are tremendously good, so much so I ended up w/ enough spools of 1000 meter Gutermann thread to last me a lifetime ($3 each, how could I resist?) and 5 rolls of 50 yard 1" elastic for $8 each. I am now a customer for life.

Owner Carole is often working inside with 1 rotating staff member, mostly organizing the shelves. The selection is very much Melissa & Doug's active catalog and Hatley branded footwares along with a smattering of other goods like Mad Libs, some trinkets, and . Pricing is an issue as obviously all customers know Amazon and online retainers of preference (eCommerce offers tons of membership, loyalty and affiliate shopping, wider selection, Walmart offers next day delivery free to metro NYC, etc.) thus seeing the prices like Melissa & Doug's Frozen Treats for $34 here vs $19 online or Wooden Sushi set for $26 vs $15 online are a problem. Likely customers are from nearby StuyTown or working at the many local medical institutions and businesses in Kips Bay thus of normal incomes thus likely to do as such. The staff visibily disprefer children play for beyond 30mins else they'll actively suggest one leave. It's likely to quell previous problem situations and to maintain an open floor space devoid of children. It's good thus for a quick blow through without the kids to get ideas then to move onto better priced retailers as most customers seen while there seemingly came in to spectate then cruise out without purchase. There're event spaces in the rear, namely a doored room of about 80 ft2 and the front area which can be closed to retail and converted to a large sitting area where the kids playareas are easily moved and removed. Pricing is mostly as expected, you will pay a few dollars extra per yard as opposed to some of the discount fabric stores. Personally, spending the few extra bucks at B&J is always worth the trade-off because of the smooth and well-designed experience in the store. They stock high-quality materials and I have never been disappointed in something I've purchased. This store goes the extra mile and will provide you with up to (I believe) 15 free samples per visit. Their inventory is extremely well-managed and they put a bar code/ID sticker on each fabric sample they give you. This way, the process is extremely fast when going back to the store to make purchases. The employees can simply scan the sticker from any of the samples and cut you a piece to length. The whole process seldom takes more than 5 minutes once you have decided what you want. This beats the discount stores 10/10 times in my book, because I save so much time that it warrants the slightly higher price. I have not written any reviews for fabric stores because, frankly, my experience has been nearly identical at all of them EXCEPT for B&J. Along with my fabric purchases, I was looking for bag/backpack hardware today which they do not really carry. One of the employees (did not get her name) was kind enough to hand me a printed list of other stores and recommend a couple that would have what I was looking for. She was absolutely spot on, and I got everything else I needed from the other store. I really appreciated the tip, I have not had a comparable experience or been given this level of attention/help at any other fabric shop in NYC.

All fabric clearly fresh and new, not from a poorly managed warehouse, but obviously from a neat and orderly business. Thanks y'all! I'm in SC and found you online. I used to live in NJ and Staten Island. Some NYC fabric stores don't have adequate websites, but yours is not only adequate, but excellent! The only thing I would add is: care instructions on each product page. I am mystified as to how to launder the cotton guipure lace I purchased, and I conclude that I will do dry clean only to stay way on the safe side. Thanks again!
