NOTE: This is now known as Angelina's Restaurant and located in Angelina's Market. Was spending some time with my parents and they wanted dinner and worn out of eating pizza, so my son suggested Middle Eastern food. After the brief search through several junk drawers, my mum pulled out the slightly creased menu for Babel restaurant. Quickly, decisively and with military precision we decided on the grilled meat tray for 4. Were you thinking how exciting that sounds? That makes three of us. Arriving at the market, the little kitchen is located straight back. Nothing fancy, nothing notable, obviously no seating. Food was ready at the time they said it would be, wrapped neatly and ready to go. Once home, there was a difference of opinion on the enjoyment of the food. My son, being 15 and eating everything in sight, said he liked and my dad being 78 and not really caring, said it was fine. My Mother on the other hand was a big fan. She said it was delicious. Of course, after eating pizza 3x a week with the grandkids she babysits, just about anything would have gotten a good grade from her. So along with son and Pops, I'm throwing her opinion out the door. So that leaves the one opinion that truly matters and that is mine. The food was still warm when we ravaged it, so this is not a case of it getting cold first. However, in my humble opinion, there was much lacking. The eggplant stew and the mixed veggie plate was good, no issues. The stew was thick and flavorful with good texture and viscosity. Great weight on the tongue. But we aren't here for stew and some mixed fruits are we? We are here for the main event and that was the meat try. Sadly I found it extremely overcooked and dried out. The rice was a meager serving for a dish that was meant to serve 4, and while the kabobs were a good size all of the meats were very dry and chewy. I actually poured some of the stew onto the meats just to add some flavor and moisture to it. As for flavor, that came out on the short end also. Let me make it clear, nothing was bad about the meal, but there was nothing that made say I wanted to come back and eat it again. This fantastic little cooking kitchen deserves some Yelp love! Located inside the Auburn Ryan Market, on that exact cross street location. It's more of a cooking kitchen than a restaurant, per se. You can call in your order, so that it's ready when you arrive or you can place your order at the counter and shop in the market while you wait. They cook up orders fast- and it's all very fresh! They offer tons of salads- tabouli, Iraqi salad, lebneh, cabbage salad, marinated/sautéed mushrooms, just to name a few. They also have grape leaves and hummus, of course. The sizes of salads and appetizers are sold in small $4, medium $6, and large $8. They portions are beyond generous! More than you'd ever get a your typical sit down restaurant. As I said, this is more of just a cooking kitchen, located inside an ethnic market, so there is no place to sit and eat. It's carry out only. They offer all kinds of pitas and wraps, with your choice of thing/flat pita bread or fluffy/thick, made in house triangle Iraqi bread. They have shawarma cooking on the vertical spits all day long- your choice of chicken or beef. They make kofta kabobs, again both chicken or beef. The Kofta kabobs are the ground mince meat kabobs. Not to be confused with the more familiar chicken tika kabobs and beef or lamb kabobs, which are the cubed marinated type. They also make and sell fried fish. All items can be bought al la cart, as a lunch or dinner plate. Pitas and wraps can be sold as a combo or as pita only. All pitas are ONLY $3.99! How can you beat that price!!? Get a few and save one for later! Not only are the pitas a great price but the whole menu can't be beat! They sell combo trays to feed anywhere from 2 -10 people- and again, these prices can't be beat anywhere! I've been patronizing this "restaurant" and market for nearly 4 years. Never once have I been disappointed with my purchases. Oh- don't forget to grab some fresh made spinach, meat, chicken or cheese pies. Each are only $1. Grab some fresh made Iraqi bread for only 4/$1. Most importantly- get the BUREK! They are amazing! The triangle ones are the mince beef with parsley, pine nuts and spices. The long, cylinder ones are the seasoned shredded chicken. Both are amazing, and only $1 everyday. If you like ethic food and a good ethic market, this is your one stop shopping.
