The same amount of food is $12 for lunch. So I called directly, and after I had left I realized they charged me $15 for the same amount of food just because it was dinner time. 1 falafel. When I called to ask why, the manager didn't offer anything but a free dessert I would have to drive back for. Now that we have tasted it's divine flavors, Baba Pita will be a staple on our takeout rotation! Ordering is super easy and super safe. You can order online or by phone. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Furthermore, the pickup options are very safe, social distanced, and routinized. The staff all wear masks and I felt very cared for as a customer! Thanks for taking Pandemic safety policies seriously! Now to the food...INCREDIBLE! We started with 4 falafel with tahini..OH MY GOSH IT WAS PERFECT! Crisp on the outside and delightfully soft and flavorful on the inside. I could've eaten 15 of them! Since it was my first time, I decided to order the Shawarma Combo. I'm so happy that I did! All three meats were so uniquely delicious and flavorful. If I had to pick, the beef was probably my favorite. The hummus and pita was also SO GOOD! And the side salad was crisp, refreshing, and delightful. Plus with a bed of aromatic rice, this combo is incredibly filling with FANTASTIC prices. You cannot go wrong with the Shawarma combo. What a hidden gem! My husband was coming to pick me up from work and I knew he would be super hungry so I searched Mediterranean places near my workplace on yelp. Come to find out that Baba Pita has amazing reviews on their food and they happen to be super close to my workplace. My husband picked me up from work and we headed over. Anyways, paid street parking is available but if you have the time, there are side streets that don't require permit and those are free street parking. We parked one block away from the restaurant and made our way over. The restaurant is located on Taylor street and you'll have no problem finding it because the Baba Pita sign can be seen from a mile away! When we walked in, I felt like I was back in Morocco or Turkey. It just had that old feel to it. There were Arabic music playing in the background and the beautiful exposed brick with traditional paintings only added to the intimate yet quaint environment. My husband and I walked in and sat down- we had no idea that they don't come to your table to serve you. After sitting there for about five minutes, the cashier came over and told us that you order first and then you sit down. Whoops! Missed that detail! Anyways, my husband and I ordered the lentil soup, I had the chicken shawarma plate and my husband had the combo but he asked to substitute turkey instead of chicken shawarma. The cashier was very nice and accommodating. We ordered our foot, paid for it and sat down. Within a couple of minutes, a really nice lady came out and served us our soup with pita bread. With probably one of the freshest beef kabobs I've had in a while and the dill rice, ummmm yes ma'am! The beef Kabob was not the typical kabob as kabobs go. It wasn't in a skewer or in a cylinder shaped morsel. Instead it was presented on top of the rice in a very typical fashion, but it didn't bother me due the taste. I absolutely thought it was extremely tasty and so tender. I poured a little bit of the sauce that accompanied it and BAMM! I will definitely now be addicted, can you say uhhh ohhh! I think that the place is beautiful (as it use to be Grand Daddy's sub sandwiches) but now, they have transformed the interior into a Mediterranean spot. I certainly can appreciate the fact that an establishment could seriously begin an adventure like this in what was once Little Italy. I love the fact that they have given us variety, as well as a taste that usually is brought in to select neighborhoods. I see a good future for the Baba Pita, and I truly hope that more will come out and see what I have seen and tasted. I don't think you will be disappointed but if you feel overwhelmed at the variety, by all means ask for a suggestion as I did. Ordered via Uber eats with a 25-30 minute delivery window. I got the salmon platter with very high hopes. Unfortunately, this fish was extremely dry and hard to eat. The rice and salad were the only ok things on my plate. The pita was old and stale as fuck. They gave me a white sauce that was delicious but it had a skim milk consistency. I also ordered a hot sauce for .50 extra that I didn't really enjoy because I threw the plate away it was so nasty. I don't know how long ago that fish was made before it was delivered to me because with the texture there's no way it was fresh. It wasn't even that hot. The actual chicken and rice tasted excellent. Great flavors. The hummus was not good at all. The bread they gave with it was just some stale, store bought bread. The most irritating part was the sauces though. For those familiar with middle eastern cuisine, the garlic sauce is KEY to enjoying your meal. Over here, they give you one tiny little cup. And when I say tiny, I mean the tiniest. Like one teaspoon worth. On top of that, it's Watered down and very liquidy. It's not supposed to be that consistency. And it costs 50 cents extra for extra sauce. That's the equivalent of McDonald's charging for ketchup packets. Also, the place is a lil pricey for the quantity. $7 for a shawarma is pushing it. I picked up some lunch from Baba Pita today. Living in the area I have always walked by and wondered how this place would compete with the Mediterranean food I've had... Having friends in the neighborhood we often share our thoughts on local establishments and for Baba Pita I have been told several times that I've got try the place. I take recommendations very serious and once something catches my interest I'm in! I ordered take out from the yelp app, everything was pretty straightforward and easy! I waited about 10 minutes to head over and upon arriving, the place was empty, the staff greeted me and I was moments away from chowing down! From the outside the place looks small! I was actually surprised at how many empty tables there were. Not gonna lie, it is pretty unsettling to walk into an empty restaurant during the lunch hour. I figured that I'd look past the empty tables and let the food speak for itself! I kept my order pretty simple. I ordered the Falafel Plate ($10), an additional Dozen Falafel ($6), and side order of Dill Rice ($2). Everything tasted good. The Falafel was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, definitely packed full of flavor with or without the sauce! The Pita was nice and warm, soft enough to make a little Falafel sandwich that didn't fall apart in my hands. The hummus was good too but the serving size was pretty small! The dill rice was very flavorful but it was a little dry! One thing I should mention is that the take out sauce portions are pretty small! I love Mediterranean sauces, I made sure to order 4 extra sauces ($0.50 each), had I known the sauce containers were small I would have ordered more! I could have used it for the rice... Visited them for a lunch. The chicken kebab is really very fresh and tasty. The strawberry mint lemonade was made in house, and was pretty refreshing. Serving times are a bit on longer side, but acceptable conaidering ghat ghey make everythimg fresh. The falafels were crsipy and the chicken very tender. Happened across this place and am so happy we stopped in! It's adorable, family owned and around Chicago over 10yrs but this location specifically only 4, so you get that real family meal feel when ordering and all. It's very clean and well kept, plenty of sit down room. Not sure if it's because we came mid Sunday afternoon and also there was a group of 10 that ordered just before us, but the food took longer than other Mediterranean places to come out... but boy is it worth it! Had Baba Pita for the first time today and it was by far my favorite authentic falafel place yet!! We order the veggie combo plate, 4 extra falafel, and 1 extra pita bread. It was the perfect amount for two people and it was just $14. Usually falafel places leave me feeling too full in a gross way but this place didn't! The tabouli salad was really good in the pita! I have been eating here everyday for like a month when I am at work. This place is seriously DE-LISH. I really have only ever tried their beef kabob but it's because its seriously always so good! Their hummus is by far my favorite hummus. I don't know what they do to theirs that no one else seems to do, but I love it. I could eat just hummus for a life time I think. Avoid this place unless you want the customer service to leave a bitter taste in your mouth. We ordered falafel, some tabbouleh, and beef kabob for delivery. First they put me on hold for 12 minutes. When I called back and placed my order they said it would be about 45 minutes to an hour. No problem it's a Friday night and I'm an understanding person They called about 30 minutes later and said that the can't make the falafel. If find it strange they they wouldn't mention this at the time of order. I said that's fine we will just cancel the order because that was one of our guests main dish and we will order from some place else. "You CAN'T refuse" they said. They made the rest of the food already. We have to pay for the order. If we didn't get what we wanted why would we have to pay for it? The woman explained that the gas for the falafel maker wasn't working. I asked when it stopped working. She said "An hour ago." BEFORE WE PLACE OUR ORDER. Wouldn't this be something you would tell the customer upfront. If you couldn't make some of the order why make the rest of the food before informing the customer. The part that set me off is and made me write the review is that she said "I can't make you be a decent person." I am going to be a bit harsh, but I am used to authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, specifically in Bridgeview, IL... what I consider to be the mecca of this kind of cuisine. To the point, I went with the meat combo. Food arrived in 10-15 minutes and the person apologized that it "took so long" - I do not expect Middle Eastern cuisine to be fast, nor should it be. It should be fresh always. I immediately noticed the food was close to room temperature, it was not hot. On to the details of the meat combo: Chicken shawarma: Seemed like dark meat chicken? The flavor was odd and not in a good way. Someone in a prior review here on Yelp said the chicken tasted "old" - I agree with that statement. Beef kabob: It wasn't a kabob at all (as stated in someone's previous review here on Yelp), just a very thin pounded piece of beef with some seasoning on it. It was slightly fatty. Chicken kabob: Just like the beef kabob, it wasn't a kabob. It was a very thin slice of chicken breast with seasoning on it. This was the most "okay" thing on my dish. Hummus: It didn't taste like it was made fresh. I don't know if it came out of a container, but I will not assume since I wasn't in the kitchen. Pita: Cold. But not stale. Salad: Was expecting a Jerusalem salad or something from the same region. Instead, just a salad with regular shreds of lettuce and a slice of tomato, spashed with some vinegar dressing. Rice: The rice was actually good, nice seasoning. But I was very hungry and it's RICE, so maybe I'm being a bit jaded after having ate the things as listed above. Strawberry Mint Lemonade: VERY strong taste of plastic, kept sucking up lemon seeds through the straw but caught them in time before accidentally sucking one down. Could not finish it. As I sit here and write this review, I can still taste the plastic in my mouth one hour later. Not good. Sorry Baba Pita, I usually give second chances but this was a rough one. I do understand that kabobs have a variety of presentations in the Middle East and not necessarily meat on a skewer, however a flat piece of beef, similar to an unbreaded schnitzel, I don't think qualifies, and what was really misleading was the photographs of the Kabobs on the wall. I minused some points because they freaked me out earlier today. I called 12 times in a row to confirm my lunch order to no available. They either didn't answer and when they did, they hung up on me. What a difference a few weeks make. I raved about this place three weeks ago, but today I'm removing two stars. Maybe it's the fact that it's a Saturday afternoon rather than a Friday evening, or maybe it's the fact that there's a teenager in charge but everything is just so bad. From her lackadaisical attitude taking my order, to waiting 15 minutes for yogurt cucumber salad and lamb shank to be brought to us, and another 10 minutes for pita bread and falafel sandwich, which were ordered at the same time. I am honestly shocked and appalled at the lack of service and overall treatment while at this establishment. After a longer than usual conversation specifically detailing our chosen meals, with particular changes, omissions, additions, and substitutions, as the friend I was with is not keen on hummus and otherwise not very familiar with Mediterranean fare. Our orders were read back to us with those specific details by the young man who worked at the cash register. We paid, signed, and sat to wait for our food. When her meal was brought out none of the other items were brought. It's not that the servers or chef messed up the specific alterations, which would have been a reasonable and understandable error. They just didn't bring out any of it. After explaining, the server indicated that because it was an error of the employees they would bring out the remaining food ordered for free, although we had not been charged for those items. After our meal having been read back to us BEFORE paying I'm still not sure how that took place. Shortly thereafter an older man came to us and combatively posited that we "got what was paid for". I began to explain to him how it's bizarre that the error took place after such a long specific conversation with alterations, and before I could finish my first sentence he cut me off shouting that it didn't matter as it had not been paid for. "Do you want to pay, or do you not want the food?!". It was the most alarming response. There was no apology - no "I'm so sorry for the miscommunication or confusion, but we can't do that..." no sense of neutral cordial respect that you would give to any person walking down the street. He spoke to us as though we were trying to run a scheme or as though we had demanded the food for free (we didn't. the server offered). I'm not sure if it was because we are black, because we are women, or because he just has no sense of customer service and finds it appropriate to treat paying customers like dogs. I should hope it's the latter - but that is reason enough to warn as many folks as I can. With regard to the food: For the price point, it is mediocre. Throughout many areas of Chicago, you can find similar or better quality food for less money. The prices are on par with or a bit more than roti, with less food served. It is not bad, but nothing I would go back for unless there was great service or a great environment. Neither of those are applicable here. With regard to the location: It is unsafe, unclean, and with more aggressive drunk beggars. I'm from Chicago, and this doesn't particularly bother me - but for the price of food and poor quality of service, it just doesn't overcome the initial awful presentation. The food was enjoyable, but I could never return or suggest that anyone go there. If you do, and you pay before hand DO NOT TIP. I tipped 20% before being seated and am still pretty bitter about it. read more
