We bought three five inch fruit pies from the stand at the August 21st Northside farmers market…read more They looked delicious. Two apple, one peach. $30. Not cheap. But worth it, if they were good. They weren't. It's as though the baker forgot the sugar. They weren't tart, they were sour. On the positive side, the apples were soft and the crumb crust was good. But the pies were almost inedible because of the sourness. Once we doused the pieces with sugar, they were quite good. By the way, there are no samples (I wonder why?), and the table guy was snarly. The market itself is very nice, upbeat and with an interesting and diverse crowd. Lots of good, fresh local produce.

Customers may purchase the pies through the business's website for pickup, through the Market Wagon website for delivery, and in person at a couple farmers' markets. For about 1.5 years, I have been a customer of this business and have ordered many flavors of pies. The quiche lorraine had a crispy crust and was filled with flavorful eggs, cheese, bacon, onions, etcetera. My husband ate the quiche, and he said, "This thing I would eat again. This is my ideal breakfast." I ate the berbere beef hand pie, and I liked its crispy crust and its filling of ground beef, potatoes, onions, carrots, and spices. I also ate an apple pie and chicken-verde hand pie, and I liked both of them.

We were down the street enjoying a great calzone and some beers and we kept seeing people walk by with ice cream. So when we left we found the place...we had no idea what we had found. Inside the two ladies were cheerful and greeted us with smiles. They gave us tastes of several different options and we each chose the one we wanted. Payment was easy and there were opportunities to stay inside if you preferred. The night we went it was a lovely and cool evening so we walked back to our apartment eating the most delicious dairy free ice cream I never knew existed.

Several great spots I know carry these ice cream sandwiches (Pittsburgh Taco Boys, Burghers in Millvale, among numerous others. I tried my first Leona's sandwich from the Millvale restaurant). Some supermarkets carry them too, I think. I had their lemon meringue ice cream sandwich. Man, it's really good. The sandwich part is sturdy and holds all the great ice cream together. The ice cream is fresh and flavorful, and quite sweet. I just really enjoyed it. Yes, decently pricey but high quality, so I think it's worth it.

I like these salsas at room temperature. They are both tasty, and have a very unique flavor…read more Unfortunately, if you don't finish the jar and need to refrigerate it until next time you wish to use it, it congeals into a solid mass (probably since it is oil based). Therefore, it needs to thaw each time you bring it out of the refrigerator for a while before using. Other than that, it's a very good product ... Cheers!

Machacha Foods is a small business that currently sells two types of salsas--Macha and…read moreCilantro--under the brand name of La Tapatia. At the Oakmont Farmers Market, I met the owner Robert who operates the business with his wife. He allowed my husband and I to taste-test the two salsas. The Macha salsa had a strong flavor of brown chili peppers, olive oil, garlic, salt, sesame seeds, and peanuts. The Cilantro salsa had a milder taste and contained cilantro, green chili pepper, garlic, olive oil, ginger, and salt. Each jar of salsa weighed 12 ounces and cost $13. I decided to buy one jar of the Cilantro salsa. I think that this flavor tastes better than many salsas from grocery stores and even many salsas from Mexican restaurants. If this business ever sells additional flavors of salsas, I will feel happy to taste them!

They are crushing it selling quality meats, veg and such to the general public and it looks like they are doing it in a safer manner than any grocery store I've seen. I took some of the chicken feta and spinach sausages, gave them a real quick sear in cast iron and then a light drizzle of olive oil wrapped in tin foil. Basically a confit/braise. It was a beautiful thing. The leftover cheese fat was borderline life changing drizzled over some roasted potatoes. All the sausages and cheeses have been amazing so far. Some of the meats I know are the same things that places like Burgatory and Morcilla have sold. Not sure what all other restaurants they were selling to until recently but it seems like a lot. I havnt grabbed a veg box yet, but plan to on Wednesday. It looked like the people in front of me got that and oat milk. I guess that's cool for the vegans, but not my thing. Anyhow, all in all I'm super stoked about this service and will be using it extensively for the foreseeable future.

The workers/owners are SO friendly. We stopped in for Beaver Light Up Night and were encouraged to sample oils and vinegars. I like that they have a sheet that lists out which oils pair well with which vinegars. I sampled a bunch, but decided to purchase the denissimo balsamic. It is aged for 20+ years in barrels and has that thick syrupy texture that good aged balsamic has. I got a small bottle that I will use sparingly on my caprese salads. I also have the truffle olive oil and truffle salt products of theirs at home. It was fun to look through all the seasonings they had that you could add the olive oil to for an easy dipping sauce. They had dried pastas and other specialty food items. The store is located right on the main street of Beaver.

Kool Cones is a local, family-owned and -operated ice-cream shop…read more For several years, I have eaten at Kool Cones off and on. During my most recent visit, the menu listed soft serves, frozen yogurts, sundaes, shakes, floats, slushees, milkshakes, and more. I wanted to treat my dog Daisy to an ice cream. I did not see it listed on the menu, so I asked the employee. She spoke nicely with me, and she explained that a pup cup is vanilla ice cream. It would be nice to see additional flavors such as peanut butter. I bought it for $1.40. It had a milk bone on top. My dog ate about half of the ice cream and all of the milk bone. I think that she would have eaten all of it if she were not tired and hot. Some outdoor seating is available here.
