What a find! There are a lot of places to stay on the Amalfi coast, but we feel like we stumbled on one of the best. It is up in Montepertuso, above Positano, so had a different feel from down below. Less tourists, more cozy.
Pros - The view - spectacular. It is quiet up there, so not only is it a great view of the town and of the "pertuso" (hole) in Montepertuso, but you feel secluded and there on your own. We really enjoyed not being in the touristy part of Positano. The food - Angelo's breakfasts were simple but yummy with fresh croissants and a wide selection of other baked goods. In a country that doesn't do breakfast well, Angelo made up for it.
Other great things about the place - spotless, great wifi, easy to communicate with Angelo. We even got a load of laundry done for 10 euro, which they kindly folded for us and left in our room. We also liked the fact that there were great restaurants within 5 minutes walk - La Tagliata, La Terra, Donna Rosa, all which we'd recommend.
Cons - not many. The biggest is that the hotel is up in the hills, so if you don't have a car you are reliant on public transport. The buses in the region are great - frequent and quite safe (which is surprising given all the precarious turns). If I had to go back, I'd still rely on the buses. But if you are planning to go on the off season, when the buses run less frequently, then you can run into some trouble. The last bus up to the hotel after Nov 1 leaves at 7:20 from Positano, making dinner down there difficult. Luckly, there are great restaurants up in Montepertuso and Nocelle, so it wasn't a big issue for us, but something we didn't know about before we got there.
Second, the stairs. Some would see this as a con, and its worth knowing there are 227 of them. But if you're not in a rush its no big deal. Does make you think twice about what you're bringing so you don't forget something and have to do the stairs again.
And we'll never forget the sight of the moon reflecting off the water from our hotel balcony. read more
