Kind of a letdown for a vegetarian Jewish deli. It may also explain why many of the items offered here have not much character to them. They look pretty, but beyond that, there is not much to take in. Meat takes character, meat is something that has personality. Vegetables have color, vegetables have sex appeal, but a vegetable will only leave you satisfied for a short while. This is what happens here. The matzo ball soup is piping hot, but the matzo ball itself is flavorless, along with any of the vegetables that go with it. It is a nice portion, but I feel I got too much meh and too little yeah. Additionally, the soup only comes with one matzo ball. That alone costs a star. As I had not had lunch for the day, I also got their Challah French Toast with two eggs. It is slightly overcooked, with too much egg custard into the mixture. The bread is fantastic, but that is about the only positive going for it. When only the eggs have any sort of personality, and those two are only just because of the wobble, it is not going to bode well in the end. I see where they are coming from, and I see the direction they want to go to, but this is not for me, not for those absurd East Village prices anyway. read more

I ordered a Flounder Sandwich on Toasted Challah, a Smoked Whitefish Salad Sandwich on Toasted Challah, Matzoh Ball Soup, Kasha Varnishkes with Sautéed Vegetables, Potato Knish with Mushroom Gravy, The Tieso (cheese perogi, mushroom-sauerkraut perogi, potato pancake, stuffed cabbage with tomato sauce), Rice Pudding, Fresh Carrot Juice and a Chocolate Egg Cream. Quickest service around! We walked in, took a table immediately, got waters, ordered, and our entrees were passed to us over the counter maybe five minutes later. The food tasted good and came in sizable portions. We got decaf coffee and a slice of chocolate cake to share as dessert also. Great vegetarian/pescatarian options on the menu. What used to be my favorite Tuna Melt in the city for a cheap price has now turned into a spot I can overlook. I used to live in the area and would frequent B&H for their $8 Tuna Melt. I came back this past weekend and waited 30+ minutes for a Tuna Melt to go - on their menu it says $12, but the lady input $13 and with taxes it turned out to be $14.15. The size of the sandwich has decreased to half the amount it used to be, and I saw the lady touch the pickles on the side with her hands after handling cash from three other customers who were dining in. With a $6 price increase for half the amount of food, this is a let down. It is a good tuna melt, but for all things considered it has dropped in the ranks for me. read more

This is one of those classic New York spots that you go to more for the atmosphere than the food in particular. We were able to snag the one table outside, and thank goodness because the inside activated claustrophobia I didn't even know I had. The staff were very personable and kind, the food came out quickly, and we liked what we got. The latke sandwich was good--the latke was deliciously crispy and I liked the challah, I think they could have chosen cheddar rather than american cheese and added pickles/cole slaw/sauerkraut/a sauce because it was a little bland and dry. This Kosher dairy diner serves all vegetarian and fish dishes. The perogies and knishes are very good. The borscht and vegetable soup are delicious. The french toast is a nice treat. The only thing here I ever disliked was the mac & cheese. It was flavorless and the macaroni was so soggy, it was softer than the cheese, and resembled glue paste. It seems like it was sitting in a pot from noon until night. Other than that, the food is excellent diner food, although not as cheap as I remembered. On our last morning in New York City, we wanted to start the day with a hearty, old-school diner breakfast and so B&H Dairy seemed to fit the bill perfectly. We arrived around 9:00 and the tiny place was already pretty full, but we managed to snag a table anyway. A quick perusal of the menu led me to the Lox and Onion Omelet ("Served with our own challah bread, home fries, small orange juice, and coffee"). At just 11:00 for all that food, it's a seriously great deal. The first thing to show up at the table was the challah bread, which was lightly toasted. It's really good. It's fresh and sweet (but not too sweet), and I can definitely seen why they're known for it. The omelet arrived shortly after and it's quite tasty. Although I found the lox maybe a little too salty, it's generally balanced by the onion and copious egg. The home fries are plentiful and tasty, while the potato pancakes, which we ordered separately, are quite hearty and flavorful. Nothing at B&H Dairy knocked my socks off, but sometimes you just want a good old-fashioned breakfast and that's exactly what we got. read more

Came here for lunch during Passover with my brother, baby, and cousin from Israel. We enjoyed the old school diner ambience. We had a stroller and couldn't move it through the restaurant so had to leave it up front. The place has been open since the 30s. It's long and narrow and has room for a 4 person table at the back of the restaurant. Otherwise, there are counter seats and pretty much 2 seat tables. The menu is large with a lot of options and all dairy. The blintzes are outstanding. I didn't love my dish, likely because it was a dairy stuffed cabbage and I usually get it with meat. Highly recommend the blintzes. Will be back for them. My brother got blintzes and borscht. The staff was really friendly and provided great service. read more

The food was just simply not that good. The borscht was missing the "homey-ness" that I usually love about borscht. The tuna salad in the tuna melt was meh and the sandwich was soooo soggy. Writing this review was a major upset, because this place has decent food and usually, great service. My husband and I would come in to have breakfast in the mornings, but this time, decided to go for dinner. Big mistake. We were able to find a table without issue, but then waited for over 20 - 30 minutes to order our food. I understand that it can get busy, but every time we tried to get someone's attention, we were ignored. My husband had to ask a couple sitting, up at the bar area, if they could get someone's attention so that we could order. Then we received an extra soup that was not ordered and on top of that, it was bland and lukewarm. To top it all off, the two men working in the front were making very rude comments towards us, especially my husband, when we went to pay. "You should give us $100," "f**king cheapskates these days." I get that B&H is one of those dying NYC institutions that everyone loves. And to be honest, that's why I demanded that we eat there when my wife and I visited our daughter in the East Village last weekend. Unfortunately, the food I got was just OK. I ordered the challah french toast and the kasha varnishkes. Both were OK -- nothing special. I was born in NYC, and my mama used to eat here regularly when she was pregnant. She always brought us here as kids, so this place holds a very special place in my heart. Our family moved to CA 50 years ago, but I'm always happy to see B&H still standing, serving the BEST blintzes in the world every time I'm back in NYC. Old staple in East Village known for some of their their Eastern European flair, proclaimed as one of the last kosher dairy lunch counters in the city. Me and wifey did bike angels (Citi bike) all summer and we'd pop in and share a tuna sandwich and a split pea soup. Sandwich was very filling, not stingy at all and tasted great. The soup was equally great, very flavorful and filling, also try their borscht! There is a old school lunch counter and some seating outside, I never have a hard time finding a seat. Got delivery when i was home sick from work and i think B&H Dairy cured me. I should've realized the soup wouldn't have chicken broth in it but i'll blame it on my cold. Didn't love it but i did expect a normal chicken soup so I'll cut it a break. The sweet potato knish was amazing and i loved the gravy. Giving it five stars for what it is, not what it isn't. It's a very tight, hole in the wall, fast paced, hot, clean, tasty, breakfast lunch place in the east village. A few two seat tables and old wobbly count stools. A cook who I think was named Leo on the grill with a smile and confidence. A back kitchen and front server, a few tables outside. There are specials every day and you may not be able to get the soup you want that day, as Leo said on a Tuesday, "you can give me the money now and come back on Friday". I had a white fish melt on challah and Swiss cheese that was very satisfying. My buddy ordered split pea soup we shared that was hearty, filling and very good. Five stars just for that.
