Macaroni & Cheese, Soup, Tuna Salad Sandwich

Quickest service around! We walked in, took a table immediately, got waters, ordered, and our entrees were passed to us over the counter maybe five minutes later. The food tasted good and came in sizable portions. We got decaf coffee and a slice of chocolate cake to share as dessert also. Great vegetarian/pescatarian options on the menu. I'd like to return for breakfast next time, but the restaurant itself is quite narrow, so I'll have to be strategic about my timing and check it's not too busy!

I came by here on a recent Sunday for some latkes and an assortment of other dishes after passing by the line for Katz Deli, which was a bit long and doing some research on an alternative. The place itself was fairly compact and had the old school New York charm of a diner. I made my order to go. It was processed fairly quickly. The latkes were pretty good and dare I say one of the best I've had.

Add a dollop of sour cream to a bowl of hot borscht. Homemade buttered challah bread comes with the soup. This is the best food at the best price. Check out the menu.

This diner/lunch counter has stood the test of time! Around since the 1930s serving up Eastern European favorites in the East Village. B&H has classic Eastern European comfort food like blintzes, pierogies, matzo brei, and challah bread, and tons of homemade soups served in a classic old school setting with a few tables and a lunch counter. Delicious comfort food like my Nana used to make~fills your belly & your soul.

Returned for lunch and got the Saturday special - tuna melt and a cup of soup for $18. The broth in their soup is better than Katz's, though I prefer Katz's matzo ball. Sandwich was incredible omfg.

Tuna Melt with Cheddar ($14.15)

What used to be my favorite Tuna Melt in the city for a cheap price has now turned into a spot I can overlook. I used to live in the area and would frequent B&H for their $8 Tuna Melt. I came back this past weekend and waited 30+ minutes for a Tuna Melt to go - on their menu it says $12, but the lady input $13 and with taxes it turned out to be $14.15. The size of the sandwich has decreased to half the amount it used to be, and I saw the lady touch the pickles on the side with her hands after handling cash from three other customers who were dining in. With a $6 price increase for half the amount of food, this is a let down. It is a good tuna melt, but for all things considered it has dropped in the ranks for me.

If you're looking for an old school diner and you don't mind a pescatarian menu, B&H Dairy should be at the top of your list. Counter service and a few small tables are the only option in this tiny spot. But what it lacks in space, it makes up for in quality, simple dishes that hit the spot. I had the matzoh ball soup, and then the white fish melt. Both tasted like no frills, hearty home cooking. I definitely left full and happy. The menu is also still very affordable, well worth a visit for a cheap meal that will fill you up!

This is one of those classic New York spots that you go to more for the atmosphere than the food in particular. We were able to snag the one table outside, and thank goodness because the inside activated claustrophobia I didn't even know I had. The staff were very personable and kind, the food came out quickly, and we liked what we got. The latke sandwich was good--the latke was deliciously crispy and I liked the challah, I think they could have chosen cheddar rather than american cheese and added pickles/cole slaw/sauerkraut/a sauce because it was a little bland and dry. But better with ketchup, which I usually don't like. The pancakes and omelet and soup were solid as well, just nothing that blew me away! It's reasonably priced, classic kosher lunch counter fare.

Amazing lunch and great Tuesday specials. Warm and friendly atmosphere! So fast and so much fun to sit at the bar.

B&H Dairy has all the classic Jewish foods and tons of fresh challah. I just tried the egg sandwich because I wanted something easy and simple and it was great. Just what you would expect. Space in the restaurant is definitely limited so this is surely best for a group of 2 or fewer but they do have one 4 person table in the back. Service was amazing and friendly and funny. We got all our food quickly and easily

Pierogis

I'm happy to have completed a goal of trying out Eastern European food in New York. I'm amazed at the diversity of food in the city, so this was a great treat. I ordered the grilled cheese with hot borscht soup and four pierogis. The diner is a vegetarian restaurant with barstool seating and some tables behind. The staff were welcoming, and the ambience felt homey and casual. I didn't know what borscht tasted like, but it turned out great. Borscht, cooked either hot or cold, is a beet soup that tastes sweet and slightly tart. It reminded me of a vegetable stew with a tomato base. Grilled cheese with hot borscht soup is definitely a comfort food and made me feel nostalgic. The pierogis, cooked fried, came with four different fillings: sauerkraut and mushroom, cheese, potato, and spinach and feta. When I ordered the pierogis, the server let me have the mix of flavors when I didn't know what options there were. I liked the potato pierogi the most, but I wish they were steamed and pan-fried instead of fried.

Perogies, Mac & Cheese, Toast, vegetable soup

This Kosher dairy diner serves all vegetarian and fish dishes. The perogies and knishes are very good. The borscht and vegetable soup are delicious. The french toast is a nice treat. The only thing here I ever disliked was the mac & cheese. It was flavorless and the macaroni was so soggy, it was softer than the cheese, and resembled glue paste. It seems like it was sitting in a pot from noon until night. Other than that, the food is excellent diner food, although not as cheap as I remembered. The service was fast, friendly, and accommodating. The diner atmosphere brings back nostalgic memories (it was opened in the 1930s), and the food has a taste that does as well.

I've been wanting to come here for years but never made a real attempt to match my appetite with this location. Well, it was a straight chute on 2nd Avenue from our Midtown East hotel to the East Village, so Jamie W. and I decided to grab breakfast here. As I presumed, it was a shoebox of a place and perhaps the last of the city's kosher vegetarian luncheonette diners. At 8:30AM, we were surprisingly the only customers though a young couple and two computer nerd types arrived after us. The breakfast menu was mostly in the $8.50-$10 range unless you want to have a lot of fruit in your pancakes. It's a good deal because you get coffee, orange juice, plenty of home fries, and best of all, thick slices of their homemade challah bread (photo: https://yelp.to/_QRWuqwqqa). Warm and so light and airy, the butter disappeared upon contact. Jamie went for the $9.50 Greek Omelet with feta, spinach, and tomato (photo: https://yelp.to/ES72YHZH_U). I went all out and ordered the $10 B&H Special Omelet with tomato, onion, mushrooms, and green peppers (photo: https://yelp.to/lUwAbOD1XR). Both were supreme diner fare especially with the abundance of crisped potatoes. We didn't eat at the counter which had a dozen stools. We took one of the tiny tables against the wall. The staff looked and sounded related to each other, though we spoke with the one woman who handed our food over the counter. Someday we want to come back and have the latkes, the knishes, and of course, the matzoh ball soup. Oy! I love that. FOOD - 5 stars...fine diner fare with the best challah bread AMBIANCE - 4 stars...cozy crowded no matter where you sit SERVICE - 5 stars...they know what they're doing TOTAL - 5 stars...now that's a breakfast RELATED - Hungry in NYC? Ask the Community - B&H Dairy

Do they have vegetarian matzoh ball soup?

Yes.

Is this place Kosher for Passover? I just called and the woman did not seem to understand my question. She just said the owner is not straight. Not too sure what that has anything to do with not wanting Chametz over Pesah.

No, it's not.

Do they serve the soup for breakfast?

Yes, and it's delicious!

You gotta love the fresh ingredients & freshly baked focaccia it comes out pipping hot, that alone is mouth watering. We ducked here to grab some nourishment before I became to hangry. Ordering takes place at the counter then grab a table. I had a 1/2 bowl of their "famous chicken soup" and 1/2 pastrami sandwich. Had good flavor and was enough to warm me up on this brisk morning. My niece did a bagel, and after trying all week she finally got one exactly how she wanted it made. We ate and chilled for a bit, no plans for the day other than making it to the airport to go home. Was able to people watch and catch up without feeling rushed to leave. Saw locals come through, so you know it is a place worth stopping. The staff were nice and even apologized for not being able to give me the soup I wanted in a half order. Though things can often get overlooked and passed by in the hustle and bustle of the city...stop in and relax while you grab a bite to eat.

Date of visit: April 14, 2026…read more Our friend wanted to go to a real New York deli during her first trip to the city and this is the one in the vicinity of Times Square and our evening show that was the highest rated according to my fellow Yelpers, but I am not quite sure why based on our experience. Things did start out great, with Boudjema being very friendly and helpful as we placed our order. And once we got seated, we were able to fully appreciate the vibe, both in the primarily 70s playlist, but also the mirror and brass touches across the restaurant. Food-wise, however, there were some definite opportunities. My Roasted Turkey sandwich did come on quite possibly the best rye bread I have ever had, warm and flavorful. But while the gravy was also good, the turkey was cold. This odd temperature mismatch made it hard to appreciate the generous portion of meat on the sandwich. We also ordered some tater tots and those were quite good. While it definitely could have been worse--and I've had worse in New York City--this also could have been so much better.
