I just went through a plumbing crisis, or rather, B & D Plumbing & Heating just got me through one. Plumbing problems are always urgent. Plumbers aren't doctors. You don't call one up for your six-month or annual examination. You call one up, because you're desperate. This has been the coldest New York City winter in memory, and we couldn't take a hot, or even warm shower for three months. On a bitter cold day, your body desperately needs to be invigorated, physically and mentally, by a hot shower. If you can't get even a warm shower, the next thing you know, you're getting depressed, your resistance is falling, and you're getting sick. Plumbing problems are always expensive. Few people can fix their own boilers, which makes plumbing an increasingly rare skill. That means it doesn't come cheaply. However, B & D was fair. They did not gouge me on the price of parts, or by staying any longer than necessary. They also did not try and skip out, with the job undone. As a homeowner now on his second double-duty boiler (heat and hot water), unfortunately, I have quite a bit of experience with plumbers. I wish I didn't. You know the scene in Moonstruck, where plumber Vince Gardenia is explaining to his apprentice, Nicolas Gage, how to rip off customers by dramatically exaggerating their problems? I've dealt with guys like that, which is why I don't like plumbers. (I won't tell you what I believe some other guys did to my boiler in the past, because you'd write me off as paranoid.) So, I was expecting the worst. And my machine was in trouble--it needed a new flow switch. Due to the old one being broken, when I turned on the hot water, the water function didn't communicate with the machine, to tell it to shut off the heat, and "dedicate" itself to just heating water, as the B & D guy explained. But that didn't do the trick. We needed a new mixing valve, as well, to regulate the water temperature. And so I had to bring B & D back. That's not on B & D. I'd suspected that we needed a new mixing valve, but hadn't said anything. Our valve had supposedly been replaced three years earlier, and our machine was new. And yet, we'd had problems with our hot water since before the "replacement." (Thus, my paranoia, and my retiring of my old plumber.) Plumbing problems are often convoluted. Our machine is a Laars Endurance. It's completely computerized, and so unlike with its predecessor, I can't replace a relay switch or anything else on my own. I don't like that. And because it's computerized, instead of everything being handled by a plumber, you have to deal first with a "technician." If the problem is above his pay grade, they call a "plumber" for a second visit. I don't like that, either, which had me very suspicious. However, although it took two visits to solve the problem, each time a technician could handle it, and I never felt like B & D was finding excuses to gouge me. The total, for two plumbing jobs, was as reasonable as one could expect, in this day and age. Plumbing problems are time-consuming. However, this is a plumber, and though the workers did everything in a reasonable amount of time, and were very polite, keep in mind that you are one desperate person competing for their time with other desperate people. You have to leave a lot of time to be home, waiting for them to arrive. Which brings me to my one problem with B & D. One day, between the two times they came, they scheduled a visit, but got backed up, and never made it. Fortunately for me, I work at home, so that did not ruin my day. Otherwise, it would have been... bad. Their office is located in Brooklyn, and I live in Queens. They're easier to get to come to your place, if you live in Brooklyn. I am giving B & D four stars, and will re-hire them the next time which, hopefully, is a long ways off. read more

My condo came with a condensing boiler that had double the heat output that the apartment actually needed, was horribly piped, and just generally a mess. After educating myself on my options, I contacted B&D to have them tear out the old unit and install a new one with an indirect HW heater. The available area in the boiler room was rather tight, and they warned me it would be a rather labor-intensive install. Their quote wasn't the cheapest, but I elected to go with them because their techs actually understood the proper design principles for condensing boilers and didn't fight me tooth and nail to oversize the darn thing once again. 80+ man-hours (installers/helpers/electrician/turn-up technician) later, my boiler room was transformed - new boiler, cleanly installed piping, any equipment that could require maintenance/replacement (like the circulation pumps) all easily accessible. They were great to work with, professional, and never left a mess behind during any part of their 5 days of work in my apartment. I'd highly recommend B&D. Sometimes you get what you pay for, folks. In my experience, plumbers get the best rates of any of the residential trades. I'm willing to bet the plumbers who installed my original boiler cost less than B&D - in retrospect, a rather expensive 'bargain' in the end. read more

I contacted B & D Plumbing in 2004 to do all the new plumbing in a landmarked, 1847 vintage, two family home in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn that I had purchased. This was after a plumber that I had originally hired failed to show up and after I had purchased a large amount of materials for the plumbing facet of the job, which was a complete Gut-Rehab. Bill Munks, the owner visited the site to reveal that he had lived in this same building as a youngster with his family. We proceeded with the work which included 2 kitchens, four bathrooms, two laundry rooms, two gas fired boilers, and all the new drain, supply, and gas piping. The work was superb, and I felt that I gained a number of new friends during the course of the ongoing work. In addition to being the owner, I was the General Contractor, designer, lead carpenter and electrician for this undertaking. The crew from B&D met my expectations for the quality of work that I demanded. I have since recommended them many times to my neighbors and friends for the quality of their work, and their business-like yet friendly attitude. We had two big probjects: Convert from oil to gas heating and Solve our severe pipe banging problem that is waking up our son a couple of times a night. B&D helped us convert and they did a fabulous job. They were professional, efficient and tidy. The company is run with their eyes on the prize - CUSTOMER SERVICE. The entire staff from the owner (Bill) to the consultant (Mike) and the office manager (AMY) were attentive and on the ball, not only with mechanics but also the paperwork. Bill has even provided some counseling:) They also helped us solve our pipe banging problem that kept all us up for most of the winter. Prior to B&D, we have had 4 other plumbers come thru our door and done all sorts of diagnosis and adjustments but none of them solve the problem in its entirety. B&D sent its technician over (Chris) and now our heating is SILENT and BEAUTIFUL. Even we know nothing about heating, we never once felt patronized by B&D staff. In fact they are very good hand holders and we very much appreciated it. Yes they are $185/hr, but if you need real professionals to solve real problems, B&D is the real deal. I own three buildings in Carroll Gardens & Cobble Hill and the only contractor I let near my plumbing jobs in the neighborhood is B&D. Being in this world I will be the first to admit that they are pricey, so much so that I used someone else for a few years. After several botched installations & service calls and having to fight for people to come back and fix their work I decided to return to B&D. The owner, Bill Sr. takes pride in his work and I think that's the difference, jobs are completed timely and 9 times out of 10, done the right way. Every contractor screws up every once and awhile but the difference with these guys is they'll always make it right. You absolutely get what you pay for here and they get away with charging what they do because they have a great reputation. I've never been "sand bagged" as was claimed here, but a piece of advice for anyone here doing any type of contracting work, get the price before hand on labor, period. If you get someone who doesn't know what they're talking about or won't talk to you, ask for their boss. Also, never ask the guy who is doing the work, unless he's independent. Be smart! read more

Dawn the dispatcher was super nice ,and called me to let me know the plumber was on his way and they were on time and very knowledgeable . The team from B&D Heating did an excellent job repiping our furnace. Our house had a poorly designed furnace room that was causing constant faults and errors (zones turning off, potential safety issues), and since they finished the work we haven't had any issues. Anthony (Red), Gustavo, and Joe did the project, and they were professional, thorough, and punctual. No surprises or messes and they stuck to their budget. They were very good at troubleshooting all the problems with connecting the furnace to controls in different zones, explained everything to us in an easy to follow way, and followed up quickly when we had questions. I have been using these guys for many years. It began with having some trouble with some LARS Endurance On Demand units. After having many plumbing and heating people come and not fix the problem, B & D came and figured it out completely. Not only did they solve and fix the problem with the units but they also figured out a larger issue with the line coming into the building and helped get that resolved as well. I should add that that part didn't cost me anything. I have been their loyal customer ever since. Their response time is also great. Just what you need when its 10 degrees and you have no heat. They are not the cheapest but they have been good to me and have cut me a bit of a break here and there. read more

B@D heating's workers are great ! they know what they are doing. Recently i had the company install a new boiler control and thermostat which cut my gas bill by more than 1,500 a month ( more than half) .They have a on staff electrician who completed the job in no time, he explained how to work it and how to adjust it to even get it more efficent. When they were done they tested and cleaned up every last piece of wire. also their plumbers are fantastic ! we have used them from sewer cleaning to a clogged toilet and never a problem. The office staff is always courtious, but they dont arrive until around 8:30 am so give them a chance its worth the wait...... read more

I just found B+D plumbers 6 weeks ago, they have serviced my two building, Steam boiler 4 story T/House, and two hot water furnaces in a mixed use building. They knew exactly what to do and generally have parts with them or will return quickly and solve the problem. Anthony (Red) is simply the "best" boiler technician I have ever met. We have been using them for over 8 years and they have always been very professional, courteous and knowledgable. I have never had to call them back because the work was done improperly. The office staff is very helpful and they will call you if the plumber will be late. No job is too big (they replaced our oil burner with a gas burner) or too small (repaired a leaky pipe under the sink). Had trouble when the expansion tank sprung a leak through the sidewall. They came with a new tank and installed it quickly. Told me to keep checking the pressure guage since it might have to be adjusted. Called them back to adjust the pressure and they sent the same tech. Adjusting the pressure is time consuming, it took a few hours. Since then it has been perfect and there was 'NO CHARGE FOR THE RETURN VISIT' Will always use B & D because I can always reach them and they are reliable. read more

Our 36-unit apartment building has had a problem getting heat to units on the top floors forever. We have had dozens of plumbers try to solve the problem by bleeding radiators, changing valves, and more. Today, Anthony from B and D spent 15 minutes in our boiler room and figured out the solution. After my Super quoted me $1200 to replace a bathtub faucet, mainly because he needed to break marble tiles around faucet and replace them, I walked in to B& D to inquire about a second opinion. They made time for me on the spot, and brought their tools, just in case. 50 minutes later, and no broken tiles, my faucet was fixed.
