The best place on the Eastern shore to get chicken livers and gizzards. They're delicious when smothered in hot sauce!

They didn't have a large deli area with grab and go food items like I had hoped to find but we made due and got some cheese, chips and crackers, and some salad bagged mixes to have for lunch in our room before a nap. Food Lion is the only grocery store of Cape Charles and basically the main hub for everything in the town. Cape Charles doesn't have a chain drug store like a CVS or Walgreens (which nearly made this city girl pass out), so for anything you need, you can count on going here. The makeup section is quite literally just a very slender few rows of items that's heavily picked over. But, again, this is a Food Lion. You're probably here for food (but if you forgot to pack something, pray to Jesus you can find something here to suffice). We purchased some groceries for our few days in Cape Charles and were able to find everything we needed, including a few housemade pasta salads and a fried chicken. The store is very organized and clean and surprisingly big for this tiny town. This grocery store will get you through your weekend trip the way it did for us!

First off, yeah, they know lots of folks are going to want alcohol, and I think half of the aisle endcaps displayed something alcoholic. While they had a lot of classic and domestic products, they do offer a decent amount of local beer, wine, and pre-mixed cocktails (even though the Untappd app said the local beer I was looking for wasn't sold anywhere in a 25 mile radius, Island Foods had it!). We came the week of Pony Penning, and the store makes a couple dozen cakes (see picture) to celebrate the occasion. The produce aisle is small, but they have enough that you could get a decent variety of fruits and vegetables for your stay. There's a pretty decent selection of meats here. I don't remember seeing too much non-frozen seafood, but I imagine it's hard to compete with the fresh catch with specialty fish markets on the island. I was pleasantly surprised to find several Gardein products, which meant vegetarian Child #1 could have some imitation meats and seafood if he wanted a protein similar to what the rest of his omnivorous family would get. Things are pricey. Inflation's here to stay and it's a touristy beach town. Considering that, it's not too bad. The folks at the register were very friendly. Whatever foodstuffs you're looking for, it's a good bet that Island Foods has it.

Food Lion seems to dominate this area as we didn't see any other food chains. Outside in the parking lot someone was hosting what appeared to be a private birthday party - complete with bounce house, DJ, and group dance. It was very odd indeed but perhaps that's how they do things down there. Inside the grocery store was like any other. It was clean and fit our needs. The only thing I didn't find was generic bottled water that wasn't purified. I thought the carry out selection was above average although some of the salads had lettuce that was browning. I was impressed with the variety of hummus they carried. What bothered me the most is customers and employees alike that have their own agenda when it comes to time. Everyone is so slow. Slow to move out of the way (or not at all), slow getting their money out to pay, our cashier was slow ringing our items across the scanner. Like dilly dally slow to the point it was driving me crazy! It's like no one had a sense of time or urgency. I couldn't take it. When the lady in front of me took her good old time rearranging her purse, getting out her wallet, rumbling through her bills it took all the control I had not to pay for her order myself just to get her on her way. Must be the Yankee in me. On the plus side they have some sort of loyalty program and I asked the cashier to apply the store's card to our order. She agreed but a customer behind us happily offered up hers for the points. I don't know if it really saved us any money but oh well! I was just glad to get out of there. Considering we only picked up about 5 items I spent more time there than I do doing a weeks worth of shopping up home (including the drive to and from!)

It's a quaint little shop where you can buy fresh seafood, groceries, as well as different pastries and other dishes at the deli counter. I was originally in the mood for an Italian sandwich, but after speaking with the employee working the counter, I got a Shrimo Po' Boy because he said "The way we make em here, you won't find anywhere else." After one bite, I realized exactly what he meant; the shrimp were so fresh that I just knew they were caught straight out of the Cheseapeake Bay that same morning. I was also a fan of the thinly sliced French fries. I got a lemon square to eat after my sandwich, and it was also so good that I grabbed a slice of rainbow cake to go. The rainbow cake was good, but a tad dry, so definitely go for the lemon square if you're looking for a dessert here. All in all, the beach market is a great stop for anybody looking for a quick bite to eat or to support a local grocer in Cape Charles.

Just a wide as steak fries but sliced ribbon-thin and very well seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and maybe a little parmesan. And if you enjoy a thick fat Italian sub, this is it. The bread was a crusty ciabatta roll. What made the difference for me on this Italian sub was that it was nicely toasted... holy smokes! The Beach Market is, indeed, a market, too. Let me start with the deli department: They are just plain rude and continue to ignore you even when they see you standing there for five minutes or more. They are more concerned with getting their maintenance work done than taking care of the customer. This was not a one time occurrence. Sadly, I live local and have experienced their lack of customer service pretty much every time I have been in there. Last time I was there, I couldn't wait any longer for the woman behind the counter to acknowledge my existence so I grabbed one of their presliced deli packages. Got home and sure enough the ham was brown all around the edges. Last month I made the mistake of not inspecting the pita bread I purchased and of course, it had mold on it when I opened it up. Ever buy Mayo-que? If you buy it there, make sure you check the expiration dates. I went to buy that and checked the date and it was expired and still on the sheld. I thought, no big deal I'll set it aside and grab another one. Every single one they had on the shelf was expired. I put it back, told the employee that was stocking that aisle about it and showed him they were all expired. Came back three days later and they were all still there. Wanna talk about their meats? Nah, you really don't. I live in Saluda, and I go there once in a while now just because it's convenient, but I pretty much get my meats at Tri-Star in Kilmarnock or Urbanna Market and now drive 45 minutes to Publix in Williamsburg or Kroger in Gloucester every two weeks for my major grocery shopping. Avoid Food Lion like the plague!
