While visiting Cape Charles for…read morethe first time two weeks ago, I stopped by Brown Dog Ice Cream since I wanted a dessert following dinner and saw a lot of people walking down the street with their ice cream cones and they had solid reviews. The shop isn't brightly lit, it's on the dim side, and you need to walk to the back of the shop to start your order. I came towards the end of the day and it wasn't crowded--there was one other person in line--but despite this and the long walk to the end of the shop I wasn't greeted by any of the staff. When I got to the start of the order line I was the only one in it and I looked at the overhead menu for some plant-based ice cream (google stated that Brown Dog Ice Cream carries plant-based ice cream options), there was an employee standing there who saw me standing in line and search the menu but didn't greet me or ask if I was ready to order--then I made eye contact with her to make sure she saw me obviously standing there and she STILL said nothing to me. Fortunately, there was another employee who came over and acknowledged me and kindly asked how she could help me. I let her know I was looking on the menu for plant-based ice cream but hadn't seen it. She let me know that Brown Dog does serve plant-based ice cream options but only in the summer months. I thanked her for her help and walked out. Because of the cold-shoulder I received when walking in and from the first employee, I won't be coming back for the summer plant-based options. I hope management hosts a training with all of their staff on how to treat people that walk into their shop...you kindly greet people when they walk in and when they are next in line, you greet them and ask how you can help them. Hopefully this improves.

When we stopped in around 6pm on a Friday there was no one here and the friendly and patient lady serving the goods was happy to answer questions about flavors and menus and after much back and forth my husband and I chose two flavors to swirl into one cup together: a coffee cappuccino flavor and black cherry. It was SO good! Large portion in a cup - easily enough for two people to share and price is fair at around $4.50. We liked it so much we came back again after dinner the next night, just as good, same friendly lady, same wonderful service. This is an easygoing, no-nonsense spot with cute seating outside and some great flavor combos as well as some other items. They have a cold brew coffee soft serve, as well as a Madison mud-pie looking brownie cup. YUM! Some sprinkle cones and other items are also options if you want to add more to your order! This is going to be a staple of my visits to CC from now on!

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. Their event coordinator, Sarah and her team provided impeccable customer service. After about 20 minutes or so, our table was ready and we did all love the atmosphere. Drinks were great - they made a perfect dirty martini and always extra points for blue cheese olives. The bartender on duty was the star of the show. We didn't catch her name, but she also works at Deadrise, so send her praises! Food was very inconsistent. We got a few appetizers to start off and the mushroom tart was by far the favorite across the table. Seasoned perfectly and loved the flavor combos. We also got the special crab puff pastry, which was fine but it felt to be lacking some difference in texture and for the price, didn't feel worth it to us. Caesar salad was extremely under seasoned, essentially flavorless but our other salad was superb! The She Crab Bisque was lovely and the crab puff on top was adorable. This place loves a puff pastry. Entrees: we sadly did not have an entree at the table that we would come back for. I got the seafood linguine, which looked delicious but again, was missing seasoning. The "sauce" tasted like seafood-y pasta water which I don't believe was the intention. The seafood was all cooked beautifully so I ate that happily and left the pasta. A friend at the table got the filet, which was seasoned beautifully but cooked incorrectly. Ordered medium, served blue rare. She did ask/tell the server, but the server shared that they just cook their steaks less than most places. The table next to us also sent back an entree and I overheard her say that it was a tough night, so with that being said, I will come back to retry this place because I have a feeling it can be really awesome
