Ask a German living outside of Germany what they miss the most about home and I guarantee you that they will almost always mention the bread. I do not have such strong ties to German bread, but my time in Berlin has taught me how to appreciate a good pretzel (with butter if necessary, not mustard, you heathen!). Bäkehaus isn't quite as gemütlich (or cozy) as your favorite neighborhood bakery in Germany since it's all self-service, but it gets the job done. The pretzels were soft and chewy and surprisingly enough, reasonably priced! Bäkehaus also offers loaves of rye bread and a plethora of sandwiches with a German twist (I spotted a pork schnitzel sandwich with cranberry sauce on ciabatta for £3.99!), so why not grab something here for lunch instead of opting for a pricey sandwich from Pret or a sad sandwich from Tesco? It's located on the high street just minutes away from the Tube station, so you really don't have an excuse. read more

I stopped here just for a pastry and some coffee to relax a bit before heading to the airport that morning and it was a great spot. Very close to Hammersmith station and a nice quick breakfast. Coffee was fantastic! read more

This cheap and fresh made bakery is one of the best things that happened to Hammersmith in the last year. The bread is good. The pastries are good. The strudels are good. The coffee is ok (self service Piacetto is not that bad). The prices are popular. I mean, 1.30 for one spinach and goat's cheese strudel? Serious? I love it. All the thing is self service and they have no toilet, so it's good for a quick visit or a take away, but you won't regret it. Today I tried the hazenult speciality and I can't wait to come back. I became really fond of kicking off my Sundays with a proper bakery brunch. This week I visited Hammersmith for some of its famous wunderbread. The game plan was to follow the savouries with the sweets while engaging in some casual sketching. The charming lady was happy to provide some butter to have with the bread (£0.20/portion) and so I went on to pick my stuff. Starting with the most aromatic, delicious pretzel I know Bakehaus was a hit. And so the rest of the goods tasted great with the highlights being the Butter-nut Crest, Bienenstich Pastry (vanilla and almond) and Chocolate-Hazelnut Crocant(delectable!). I have spent a solid hour in there and had a very relaxing start for the day, recommended! read more

I just ate a massive warm crispy and doughy pretzel for my lunch. Danke Schön Bäkehaus and danke schön Deutschland! I'll be back for more of your fresh bread and cakes sometime soon. Some of the other items like the sandwiches and coffee selection didn't exactly strike me as German in anyway but they looked good enough. The clean efficient shop with über-functional lay-out and tables definitely seemed VERY German. The smell and sight of the baking ovens behind the counter is a big plus too. But really - it's the pretzels that matter. 85p will get me back at least once a week. How about you start upping the German-ness and put in some big sausages on the menu? read more

I love Bakehaus! I spent part of my childhood in Germany, so I'm always pining for German style breads and pastries. Bakehaus is as close as you can get to the real deal without hopping on a plane. This place is part bakery, part restaurant. There's a large wall packed with all sorts of savoury and sweet baked goods originating from Germany (and a few generic items as well), but you can also order things like schnitzel, currywurst, and bockwurst at the counter. The pastries are great and well priced, and service is quick. You grab what you want, pay for it, and you'll be out of there in a few minutes. If you want you can also sit down and enjoy your hot food or pastries at one of the five or so bench seating tables. There's usually always space, even on weekends, and I've been known to pop in for some schnitzel before making my way to Heathrow...it's a very weird secret habit of mine. The only slightly negative thing worth noting is that some items on their menu are seasonal, so don't get attached to any one thing. It might not be there the next time you visit. read more

Bakehaus is like a posher, German version of Greggs. The posh (and German?) bit is the well-ordered display of a variety of sandwiches, pastries (from Germany and other parts of Europe), pretzels, doughnuts cakes and strudels, both savoury and sweet. Sidle up to the counter to pay, and that's when you notice the similarity with Greggs - the low prices. Sandwiches seem to cost in the £2.50-£3 range, and pastries/pretzels in the £0.80-£1.20 range. They're also good. Not the best you'll ever have, but good for the price. Overall - I'm a fan. read more

I can't believe this place has been around for ages, and I have only just come across it! It really does have a German feel to it, even though it's playing on obvious stereotypes a bit too much (not every sandwich in Germany contains sausages!), but all is forgiven as they sell proper German bread. Both the sunflower loaf and pumpkin seed rye bread look and taste just like the real thing. Compared to many other upmarket/artisan bread shops, Bakehaus offers good value. And I was happy to spot some stollen for Christmas this will save a trip to Germany next year! I will come back for more bread, but probably continue to avoid the meals they do look rather junky by comparison. read more

I saw this place when they were turning it into a Bakehaus. It looked interesting and new and I remember thinking that I was looking forward to it opening so I could go and see what it was like. Turns out it's great. I went yesterday on my way to a concert. Needed some food and conveniently I was passing by so went in. It's a very modern place but still rustic with big wooden tables and benches, and all the pastries and breads on shelves on one big long wall, and looks so appealing with all the bakery. I picked up a pastry on the way in (you have to walk past them all to get to the sandwich end, so might as well!), and then stared at all my lunch choices. While walking down the shop I saw some good looking hot paninis/sandwiches listed up on boards over the tills. They sounded good but I was in a hurry so needed something quick and settled on a baguette filled with ribsteak, german coleslaw, mustard, mayo and salad. It was very tasty, the coleslaw was fantastic and the bread just perfect. The pastry was equally fantastic, lovely blueberry filling, and I got a drink for £1 with it so as a whole for my huge lump of baguette, blueberry pastry and bottle of pop, I paid less than a fiver which I thought was a pretty good lunchtime treat, making a very happy me! read more

This German bakery is excellent! I love the rolls and pastries, and salads are good, too. The currywurst didn't do much for me; it was really spicy- but if you like it hot, you just may like this! Prices range from cheap to reasonable, not bad. Plenty of seating in bench-style communal tables. I'm in love! read more

Terrible food, bockwurst was not authentic, really a cheap frankfurther. Fish filet, cooked in a microwave, was soggy. Avoid.

Amazing bread and rolls! This place is worth visiting purely to buy their bread the brötchen (rolls) and the loaves are simply miles ahead of what's normally available in London and Bäkehaus isn't even very expensive! We buy our bread from there as often as possible, and often pay a quick visit on weekend mornings to get freshly baked rolls for breakfast just like in Germany. Cannot recommend Bäkehaus enough if you're at all interested in eating good bread. read more

I walked by this place a few times and kept looking in at the fresh handmade pizzas in the window. I finally walked in to grab a pizza meal deal. Any slice, a drink, and a pastry for 4.95. I choose a roasted veggie slice and really enjoyed it. It was full of flavor with a nice medium thin crust. I say and enjoyed the pizza, drink, and pastry while sitting in the window and watching people walk by on King Street. An enjoyable experience! read more

The Bäkehaus is filled with German goods (rough German translation: Bake House). The photo shows my order: Leberkäse mit Senf (aka beef and pork loaf with mustard), which I didn't have in years and spoiler alert: It was pretty dang good. The menu has it a little misleading filed as Burger, it's not like a Burger Burger, one of those massive things you know from Ed's or Byron's, this one is with German traditional buns, which is not that amazing for Burger Maniacs, but the German mustard and the Leberkäse save the day. You almost don't notice the lettuce or the tomato, but the dill pickle gives it the cheeky harsh German touch. The meat was well cooked and a dream, really annoying that it is hard to get in GB's supermarkets. The location itself is nice and clean, more than enough seats and friendly staff. A little music in the background would have been dope, but nah, I was there for the food, not the ambiente. Another itsy-bitsy thing I would like to critizise, is that my meal was not as pleasing to the eye as most British Burgers, it's smaller and more compact in it's approach. I could have eaten a tiny piece of cake or something sweet along those lines as dessert, but the sweet drink (that is definitely not German, made in GB) was almost the perfect replacement. The prices are well balanced, my "Burger" and the drink came around £6.50, order another main dish and you got the same price for one Byron's or Ed's Burger. I came in here for a coffee and pastry for breakfast when my mother was visiting. It was a last minute decision while we were waiting for Primark to open but turns out it was a good one! Someone is making fresh pizzas as soon as you walk in the door, the smell of which already makes you want to buy everything in there. They have a huge range of pastries and delicious looking bread rolls. The best bit is that the pastries are 3 for £1.20 or something so it was actually 10p cheaper for us to get 3 than it was to get 2, meaning I saved one for breaky the next day. The coffee was okay but not great - I guess the food is their speciality and the coffee is an added extra. The "restaurant" part is also very unexciting with a few benches for people to eat at, however I think it is more the place where people pop in to buy their bread for the day and leave. I've only been here are once but really need to go again!! read more

How can anyone say Bakehaus is junk food!? Its a busy well known chain in Germany and I'd love more over here. It's a fab bakery compared to some of the rubbish ones in the UK. It's clean, spacious, efficient and cheaper than other bakeries for the quality of the products. Obviously the bread is a little more expensive as it's a foreign product but for the quality of the German bread compared to other copies I've found here, it's well worth it and all the ingredients are sent from Germany too. Authentic flour and pastries in a modern and clean setting, all baked on the premises everyday. The machine coffee is better than many! The sandwiches are also fresh and nutritious, compared to some of the other rubbish covered in mayo around. Go and try it, you won't be disappointed. read more
