My husband and I had dinner there two nights ago. The meals were more than disappointing. The Chimichanga was "blah" and tasteless (redundant perhaps but I can't emphasize this enough). The meal was plated in the most unappetizing way. The Chimichanga was drenched in melted queso, which oozed into the runny refried beans which were splotched with more melted queso which (beans and queso) oozed into the Spanish rice . . . which was also tasteless. I took half the Chimichanga home, all the rice and a few spoonsful of the refried beans. When I reheated the Chimichanga I found a small triangle of black plastic inside. The only thing edible reheated then was the Spanish Rice, which I seasoned to give it some flavor. Then there was my husband's burrito . . . white oval plate, white tortilla shell filled with beef, beans and other unknowns with red sauce slathered over half. It looked like it was bleeding, profusely into the pool of melted queso on one half of the plate. Presentation is everything and this missed by a mile. The chips and salsa were very tasty. We have been here a few times & had good dining experiences, so when our daughter was visiting we decided this was a family-friendly place to celebrate her birthday. The food & drinks were tasty & nicely presented. Service was attentive & respectful, except when the wait staff gathered around to sing. All started very festive with sombrero & singing, then one of the female servers took a spoon & smeared whipped cream on my daughter's face dripping it down the front of her silk blouse. My husband and I have eaten here several times, the last time being today, Sunday. The food deserves maybe a C-. I had taquitos with overcooked beef and a tortilla which was like trying to chew shoe leather. We've had much better Mexican food in other places we've lived. What's worse, I tried to use a coupon from our local Superbook. The coupon says: one free lunch entree with purchase of same or greater value." When I tried to use the coupon, I was told it's only good Mon. thru Frid. for the lunch special. I told the manager this is not what the coupon says. The coupon says "entree" not "special," and there is nothing on the coupon to indicate it had to be used Mon. thru Frid. only. The manager did not make good on the coupon. In addition to low quality of food, this was extremely bad customer service. We will most likely not frequent this place again. read more

Went there last night & I got the tacos al pastor - which was basically all fat and gristle. Completely gross. Toward the end of our meal (around 9:45) they started cleaning with very strong smelling cleaner and it was very clear that they wanted us to leave. They had a whole restaurant to clean but they concentrated their efforts right around us. The smell overpowered the food and we all took the rest of our food to go bc it ruined the meal. We asked for the check but it took 15 minutes to get it - and our friends never even got theirs. My husband and friends walked out saying they would never go back and I have to agree. We have never been impressed but kept giving it a try anyway. There have been 2 separate Tuesdays that they have been closed for "repairs" - and we've had very rude and/or slow service every time. Definitely skip this place. It's a shame bc the restaurant looks like it should be nice but it's horrible. read more

Wife and I driving around at 9:00pm on a Saturday to find somewhere to eat. We love North Shore Inn, but it was closed. Went to Silver Beach Pizza, they were lined up outside. Decided to try Azul Tequila for first time. It was great. Unfortunately there was only one other table full in the entire place, which may have been to our benefit for the fast food and service. Very cool design inside. We were served quickly and our waitress was very nice. Chips and salsa were good and we got a queso blanco which was tasty also. My wife got a Quesadilla and asked for Chicken and Pineapple (addition). It was friggin huge! I had the Carnitas and they were very tasty. A TON of food. We also did not think it was possible to get food faster than El Rodeo (which we all laugh about), but we did! I know you can go to a ton of different places and get Mexican. Others have pointed out it isn't "authentic". What ever, it was good. I have eaten Mexican all over country and obviously some are better and more "authentic". This place fit the bill, late at night and we were hungry. Won't be our last trip and I hope it stays consistent. Also, our bill was a ridiculously cheap $24.00. read more

Worst experience ever! Service was terrible. We were not acknowledged and had to Ask to get service. We were served raw shrimp. We sent it back and we were then told the shrimp was not raw, they had been serving it all day and if we did not pay they would call the police. Overall, I would really rate this as no stars (but system won't let me)! Atmosphere is cheesy; service is very poor; and food was disgusting. Margaritas, not sure why Mexican restaurants (in general) feel they need to add so much sweeteners to their margaritas. We ordered the top shelf regular margarita on the rocks....tasted like a tangy sugar water. I added several fresh limes and even had to get a shot of 1800 Cuervo to try and get it drinkable. Btw, I drink 1800 Cuervo at home and this shot was not it. So no more drinks for us! Food, nothing authentic! Chips fake. Tortillas saugy and fake. Chicken fajitas were salty, oily, and not distinguishable (appeared to be onions, peppers, tomatoes and tiny chunks of chicken) and WAY OVER COOKED. Guacamole fake. Beans ok. It's a fine place to visit and the menu is extensive. The food was good. Not great but good. There were some odd plates brought out, as if orders got mixed up or written down wrong. There was a lot of staff on hand and it took a long time between getting drinks and having our food orders taken but the food came out fast after that. Nice atmosphere. We went for dinner on a taco Tuesday expecting to get dollar tacos but they only do that during lunch. The hostess talked us into staying by telling us they still have a deal going that's 3 tacos for 5 dollars. Our seat was bad, it was right next to a door that was open and had a guy smoking right outside of it, and we were also right next to the back of the bar that was very unsightly. The booth was also very uncomfortable. The food was mediocre. I ordered burritos and they weren't bad. They were bland. They only had ground beef and salsa on top of them. My husband, myself, & a friend went to Azul Tequila last Saturday night & EVERYTHING was terrible. We all ordered top shelf margaritas for $7.99 each & none of us could taste the tequila. We had to ask twice for water for my friend. I ordered a tamale to see if I wanted to order more & never received it. I ordered the enchilada dinner & the shrimp was so small, dry, & hard & received a half plate of lettace & tomato, but no refried beans. My friend ordered 1 taco & received the whole dinner. They were filled with chunks of lettace & the taco meat was scarce & mushy. My husband is from Los Angeles & is Mexican (you really don't want me to say what he said). To top it off, we were the only ones there @ 10pm so they started mopping right across from our table. To open a restaurant in downtown St. Joseph across from the court house like this is a sin. I took my adult daughter and my wife last night to celebrate our anniversary. We had a wonderful time. The food was good with large portions. Service was excellent, friendly, and speedy. The place was very clean and the prices reasonable. My wife and I both had the seafood chimichanga meal and were quite pleased. My daughter had enchiladas from the a la carte menu and she said that she was happy with them. Finally, we used a coupon printed off from the restaurant's web site. We will definitely return. Disappointing. While waiting to be seated, I asked the host if they made their tortillas and salsa in house -- he told me no. The salsa tasted like Pace brand and the tortillas were like Fritos. Given that this is not a chain, I really anticipated authentic Mexican. It was lunch so I didn't have a margarita (can't rate those). My meal was a vegetarian burrito and there were mushrooms in it! I like mushrooms, but not in my burrito. Very odd. And the rice tasted like it was 3 days old. The plate was a mess and the portion too large. Could have gotten 3 meals out of it, but alas, it wasn't worth the "doggie bag." While I applaud the hard work of the wait staff, it was difficult to communicate. They were friendly but the atmosphere was just okay. A little too cliche. While it would be nice to have a great Mexican eatery here, I will not be going back. Went with friends. Waiter showed up quickly and asked us for our beverage order. He came back with the drinks and seemed to want us to order right away. No attempt to connect with us or give us time to enjoy our drinks. We ordered guacamole appetizer. I could tell he wanted us to order entrees too and was afraid we would get them with the appetizer. I reminded him to bring the appetizer first. He said he would. Entrees came in like 5 minutes, Guess what? No appetizer! We mentioned it and waiter said he forgot. Seems they just wanted us to eat and get out. Food is plentiful and good but service sucks. This restaurant is going to fail because it's staff is disinterested. 5 of us had dinner at Azul last night. Worst dinner ever. I am aware that this is their first week and have things to iron out but no silverware? Really? We received plastic utensils and a tiny napkin in a packet. Ridiculous in any sit down restaurant but especially so in any Latin restaurant where much of your meal is eaten with your hands. If that was my only objection I could deal with it but 3 out of 5 meals were wrong, the plate presentation was awful, the table was sticky and had an overwhelming smell of cleaning fluid, the margaritas came from a mix when I asked for blended, the waiter who was very nice did not know the menu and I could go on and on but what really fried me was seeing the manager sitting at the bar socializing when he should have been paying attention to what was happening around him. I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of Azul Tequila but after reading some of the first reviews online which were very, very negative, I did hesitate some. Buzz around town, however, was that this place was definitely worth trying and people were loving it. We went on Saturday night at 8:20pm to try and avoid the masses. We were told we would have a 25 minute wait, no biggie. The wait was really more like 10 minutes. We were promptly served chips and salsa. They did not have non-alcoholic beer, as a previous review stated. I hope they get it soon. I was able to order a virgin strawberry daiquiri and that was delicious..even though our server forgot it and had to be reminded (no biggie to me personally). I ordered the Mexico City Chimichanga and my husband stuck with his beloved chicken fajitas. Both were huge and delicious - great presentation. The guacamole and pico with the dishes are wonderful. Our server was busy but very good (other than the specialty drink order which he promptly corrected). For being open 3 weeks, they're doing a great job, especially given the demand. Let's hope this place sticks around this location as it seems to be a revolving door! :) read more

The food (taco salad and chicken fajitas) was very good and authentic! On the other hand, the margaritas were not. They were just mix that already had tequila in them. Extremely sweet! Too sweet to drink. Waited for our server to check on us, because we had put our drinks at the end of the table to signify that we didn't like them. (I worked in a restaurant before and I always give them the benefit of the doubt, but this time I can't) I asked if I could speak with a manager, but there apparently wasn't one. I refuse to pay for the margaritas that we didn't drink and they took them off. The lady who took it off was very annoyed of the fact and was very salty and grumpy after that. In the mean time I was being kind, because I don't like confrontation. It just wasn't a good experience. The waitress was kind, so my friend tipped her just $2. But nothing more because she didn't serve the food or check on us for almost an hour. Cool place!
