The area here is definitely hard to find parking, and it had a lot of random foot traffic with people just hanging around outside. It seems like it's more of a local spot, for those who are in walking distance already. There are a few seats inside but not many. You order at the counter and they call you up when it's ready. I ordered the breakfast burrito with the chorizo, egg, potato and cheese with a side of red salsa. It was greasy and good, and hit the spot at the time, jowever i did pay for it later unfortunately lol. The portion size and price were pretty good, and the restaurant looked pretty clean overall. They had a pretty cool mural on the wall. I will definitely go back and try one of there other menu items. read more

While I was in town and craving a breakfast burrito, this spot happened to be the closest to my Airbnb--so I decided to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. The chorizo burrito was massive and absolutely delicious. The place looked clean and well-kept, and during the 10 minutes I waited, three other customers came in--clearly regulars based on their friendly conversation with who I assume was the owner. This place is inconsistent and half the time awful. I live across the street and the food is completely dependent on who's working. I've gotten this combo 2 other times. Today the chile relleno had no sauce! When i called and asked why, the guy acted confused. read more

Good prices for your meal compared to similar places nearby. Free refills on drinks too. This place gets packed with locals at lunchtime, they know what's up! I like that you can taste the grill in the food, which is to say you can taste everything they've been cooking. I got a breakfast burrito but I could taste the cheese from a quesadilla. read more

It was a bit hard to find parking here but I will say the prices are very reasonable and the size of the portions are good too. I got their veggie burrito and it was so yummy! The service was good it took a bit long to get our food but nothing crazy. I would say the location is a bit dicey at times with the people who hang out outside. read more

Azteca is a simple but solid taco shop! I recommend stopping if you're downtown and need a quick but delicious bite to eat. The service is good, the lady at the register is nice. I've had the rolled tacos and a bacon breakfast burrito.. definitely recommend! While they can't control what goes on outside of the shop, (trolley stop transients), inside the shop is very clean. I was not a fan of the breakfast burrito I had from this taco shop. They missed in several steps to make it at least a good breakfast burrito. I had the ham, eggs, potatoes, and cheese burrito. First thing I did not appreciate was that they did not chop up the ham and scramble it with the eggs. They cooked the ham and eggs separately then places them in the burrito. It just looked odd and threw off the texture of the burrito. The ham was good but the eggs were very under seasoned or not at all perhaps. The potatoes I had a huge problem with because they were greasy and to mushy. They tasted of oil, so I proceeded to remove the most I could. I also bit into some totally burnt pieces of potato. They were not pleasant and I had to spit them out. The flour tortilla was okay, but it was not heated all the way through. The lackluster attention to details at this taco shop was disappointing. I don't give out many one star reviews, but when a place deserves it, well I have no choice but to follow through. Taco shops like this one is what give taco shops a bad name in the minds of certain people. Step it up people! read more

We LOVE this taco shop. We usually stop here and pick up a burrito before we head into petco park to watch the Padres. I've had the California, Carnitas, and Bean cheese and rice burritos, all delicious! I just order the roll tacos today, also amazing! My bf likes their breakfast burritos (which are served all day) and carnitas tacos. They have a green salsa and a red salsa that has some heat. The location is right off the park and market trolley station. Very casual ambiance, you order at the register and pick up there as well. The cashiers have seen my face often enough that they know what I'll order... the orders are usually fast and always good. Ok.. talk about a diamond in the rough!! I have been a really big fan of California burritos for a lonnng time now. A couple weeks ago I would have told you I've been to every taco shop in San Diego and tried everything on each of their menus. So glad I found this place! One of the best Mexican food restaurants I've been to and Im so surprised I didn't find it sooner Ive tried a few different things on the menu and everything has more flavor than your usual taco shop. The Carne Asada is tender and goes so well with the Carne asada fries but the burrito has potatoes and its just so delicious I had to rant about it. Taco shop is tucked away off of a trolley stop with a cool Myhan calendar inside. The area is quite littered and can seem sketchy but that doesn't stop me from coming back whenever I crave some Mexican cuisine. This place is definitely worth a try if you live quality Mexican food at a fair price. read more

This has become my favorite hole in the wall. The food keeps me coming back. I've tried just about everything on the menu and it's all good. The pollo and carne asada are both a treat because they don't try to cover up the taste of the meat with that same old Tex Mex flavor - they respect the flavor of the meat! And everything is served fast and hot with a friendly smile. And if you're a regular, a hearty "Mi, amigo!" From breakfast (served anytime) to entrees, Azteca has yet to disappoint, and that's saying quite a bit. And I just can't get enough of those mini tacos! read more

Tacos are excellent!! The ambiance is not terrible. After all it is a taco shop... Very nice cashier and good service, as far as I'm concerned. The trick is to order your food to go and eat somewhere else. The trolley stop is just outside and so there is a major congregation of homeless, transient and vagrants. On occasion you get a whiff of either weed (very skunky" odor or urine smell when the wind blows. You don't get a choice, it's just one or the other. Again, food-wise you can't go wrong. read more

This place is a hole in the wall on a crappy block, and it is AMAZING. Seriously, when you think low key authentic Mexican food, this is it. Their carne asada and adobada will rival anyones. My go to's are their street tacos (mini tacos on their menu) or their California burrito, which, and I'm not joking here, is a top 3 California burrito in the city. It's that good. Excellent crispy fries inside, amazing carne, and perfect mixture of guac and sour cream. If you're looking for a bite before a Padres game, come here instead of Lolita's. read more

This meal was a tale of two tacos. The individual tacos we ordered were amazing, especially the shrimp taco. Topping it off with their salsa roja and salsa verde made it even better. The birria tacos, however, were basically the opposite and pretty disappointing. The overall dish just lacked any real flavor and was very dry, but I'm not sure if that was because it didn't have any cheese or if the meat just turned out that way. Still a good spot to check out, but only for their normal tacos though. read more

Azteca has become one of my favorite places from El cajon to Carlsbad being Mexican and primarily eating Mexican food when chosing fast food , I can tell you azteca is always on the top of my list I would walk 10 minutes and drive and extra 10 miles to get here if needed. They seem to have the right idea when running a Mexican food eatery from their great service to God quality fresh ingredients but most importantly to me is their delicious and consistent salsa , I love their red salsa it's got a kick and good flavor. You can expect a great meal with whatever you choose to order I primarily get their California burritos as it already comes with everything it should guac cheese sour cream . But I also love their carne asada as it's from a good cut and always cooked seasoned right . I also love their rolled tacos specially since you can order them with everything guac cheese pico lettuce . In the morning I enjoy their bacon breakfast burritos , I always add beans to the burrito and I'm sure to be full all day. The area is not the best but that never makes me think twice about going there , there's a brewery next door which they allow you to bring food in so it's a perfect combo for me. read more

Quaint little "Hole-in-the-wall" taco shop located across the street from the Park & Market trolley station. Burritos were pretty flavorful and beefy for the price point, and staff here were very friendly. It isn't a fancy Michelin-star place by any means, but it's still definitely a step above any chain Mex place in the area, that's for sure. :) read more

Ok, so it's not much to look at on the outside but then again, some of the best places I've eaten at are home in the walls. I live across the street and have seen this place but never ordered until one night I was so hungry and didn't want to wander too far. I got the shrimp tacos, carne asada tacos and carne asada tostada. I'll be honest, the shrimp taco was good but nothing to rave about but the carbs asada taco and rosado - OMG!!!! So good. The tostada was probably the best I've had. So so good!!! I've been back three times on the last two weeks. It's now my go to. Great food, cheap prices and super quick. Give it a chance, you won't be disappointed! read more

Hard Pass! I have been here many times and every time it gets worse and worse. The last time however was the final. Now I am boycotting it ;) 1st. The location is not the best - being located right next to the trolly and around the corner from where the homeless beg. The restaurant itself is just a step above a hole in the wall (and not one of the good ones). Somewhat dirty, extremely dark and dreary and they blast the small TV with Mexican soap operas. I would especially never eat there. 2nd. The food is average to poor. A basic selection of your typical Mexican dishes yet none are good almost taste as if it was just warmed up old or freezer food - definitely not fresh or authentic, which is surprising. 3rd. And lastly - the service! They are very slow in getting your order taken, as they are more concerned with talking with their coworkers, watching TV or pretending to clean tables. Then the people who work there themselves - extremely stingy and inconsiderate. For example they will only give you one salsa container. What Mexican restaurant doesn't have a salsa bar for one and two what one limits you to the amount of salsa you are allowed?!?!? read more

Ok. Here's my honest opinion of this place. It's always packed and has good customer service but what surprised me the most is that the food is more than excellent. Most little hole in the wall places like this usually have something wrong. I think the only thing wrong with this place is the location. Apart from that this place is damn near perfect. My favorite food here is the "quesabirria burrito". It's absolutely awesome down to the very last bite and great portions too!!! Enjoy!!! read more

I asked for without potatoes the second time because it was a little strange to me, but that's just preference. They absolutely fixed it up just perfect for me and I wished I lived closer. Wanted to eat a vegetarian breakfast burrito downtown. I asked an older man smoking a cigarette if there was a place close by. I was waiting for the library to open downtown. The elderly man recommended Azteca. I am so glad to have found this place. Never knew there was a taco shop on Park Blvd. near the library by the trolley tracks! I usually eat the breakfast burrito number 8 for $4.95. The burrito has eggs, potatoes and cheese. I recommend this place for the good service and very reasonable prices. read more

For entree, we got the scallops with corn cake, a salad and I had the poblano burger. I asked for the burger to be cooked to medium. When the entrees arrived my burger was overcooked with no pink in sight. The flavor of the burger was good but the burger was definitely dry as can be. The corn cake with scallop was interesting it was almost like the corn cake was a croquet that encased a corn salsa. Overall the food was okay but the service left a lot to be desired. The waiter and the end seemed to put up a fake act when the check came. Since we asked for the check it seemed like the waiter was on hyper speed. Overall the view is nice but the food and service did not meet the expectations.

Talking about a hidden gem! Easily one of the best Mexican food in San Diego, especially in the downtown area. I've had pretty much everything here and nothing disappoints. Even the horchata is one of the best I've ever had. There is lots of groups hanging outside the shop smoking, loitering. The shop is literally in front of the trolley station, so I mean cmon what else do you expect. But the inside is always nice and clean, and the customer service is 100% great always. I had the carne asada fries today and it was really good. Both red and green hot sauce gives it a boost of flavor in every bite. I'd recommend everyone to come and give it a try. read more

I'm visiting from LA, so I taking the trolley around so I can experience new locations. This spot is right in front from the trolley. Their is some weird characters outside but the place is very clean. I got the carnitas tacos and there are one of the best tacos I ever had. Some places have their carnitas hard but here there were juicy and so flavorful. I bought two and I ordered two more because they are that good. I will definitely visit this place again when I have the chance to visit San Diego again. The next day I decided to get breakfast, so I got the machaca burrito. It hit the spot. read more

We decided to go see the Padres game at Petco Park. When we were walking towards the stadium, we stumble upon Azteca taco shop and decided to give it a try. I ordered the carne asada fries and my bf got the carne asada chips. They were so delicious. What I like about these carne asada fries is that it's a perfect portion, they're big but not too big. Some places carne asada fries are just too much and it gets to overwhelming and you just get grossed out. Here at Azteca you finish feeling good and satisfied and not feeling like crap. read more

I work in downtown, so every time I'm on my break, I have to stop by and get some food. They have one of the best rolled tacos hands down. Other places rolled tacos are just bland and greasy. Here, they are nicely prepared. read more
