I rented here from June '21 to August '22. For the first 3 months, the place seemed great. I even wrote a 5 star review for the maintenance manager [who has changed multiple times since then] and assistant property manager Diamond Sims (which has since been taken down. How? Keep reading.). I gave Kandyce Johnson, the property manager, who wrote a review "I love it here" (below, a year ago), some email feedback about her work in August of '22. One thing: I had rented the gather room for $200 for a Baby Shower and she 'forgot' to put my name in the system. By September, Kandyce would no longer speak to me or even look at me, one time just starting to whistle weirdly when I was in the mailroom.
[Side note here: the maintenance managers and I would talk alot and they told me that no one else stood up to Kandyce but that they were glad that I had. They could see she was the kind of person who would give you the cold shoulder if you critiqued her. I also knew other people who called Broadstone and she was really good at hanging up on them if they wanted something from her that she didn't want to put any energy into. I experienced this for months, later, when I was working to get the fake fees removed and security deposit back. More below.]
From there, things went downhill. I had a feeling about this company and made sure everything was taken care of before my my lease was up in August by checking in with Diamond when I was on a work trip for the month of August. When I got back to move out, Kandyce said Diamond hadn't confirmed everything. She tried to charge me for an extra month so I spoke to the Regional Manager, Kimberly Solano, who reluctantly agreed to charge me 1/2 a month extra. We shook hands and I wrote a note and left my keys and everything was settled.
It took until March of '23 (7 months) for me to get my security deposit back, having to get help from my attorney to threaten them with a suit for not following through with their legal responsibility.
Then in November of '23 (15 months after my lease ended), I got a collections email from a company called Genesis (aka Columbia Debt Recovery) for one and a half months more rent and some "reimbursed" utilities, garage fees and other seemingly professional charges that made no sense. I'd send a picture, but this review post will not allow it. It totaled $1,696.74! When I spoke with Stephanie [assigned to my case] and Ken [manager] about what this company was doing, they said it all looks legal so they can't do anything about it. And Ken threatened my credit score because I wouldn't let him talk over me. My attorney told me that I would have to pay it and bring them to court. So, I paid it.
This parent company Greystar has assets under management of more than $76 billion dollars, not least because they take advantage of their renters, most of whom don't have the energy to fight for what is theirs. This is the kind of company that gives America a bad name: they prey on the common man to amass a fortune, while using companies that can threaten credit scores and property managers that are friendly enough to get you to rent and then take advantage of you once you do. This creates resentment in people who are trying to come up in the world and makes people paranoid. The cycle gets dark.
My advice to anyone looking to rent here: stay away. They will pull you in with seemingly luxurious amenities and then treat you dismissively and like you are disposable until you are done renting. The rooftop fireplace worked twice in 15 months and I would call the maintenance managers almost daily to get it going and help out the other tenants. What a joke. I feel sorry for the victims of companies like this. read more
