We had such a great time! Got a Groupon and booked for a Thursday night. Came a little early to sign the waiver and checked in. We kept masks on the whole time, and they kept the door to the building open. Staff was so friendly and helpful. Meg and Tom were our coaches, and Meg has the warmest personality and really set the tone for us to enjoy our time there. Took me a little while to get the hang of it, but my husband was amazing (he got around 20 bullseyes). You get over an hour to try out the different techniques the coaches teach you, and get out some of your aggression with the axes. Bought tickets online the night before and was happy to find an open time at 3pm on a Saturday! They ask you to arrive 10 mins before so they can give a quick tutorial. The staff were all super friendly and helpful and gave us some really good tips since it was our first time. They also remind everyone to keep their masks on the entire time and the space is very well-ventilated as well with open doors and a strong fan. It was $35 for 75 mins and we felt like that was a pretty good amount of time for first-timers, but we'd probably choose a shorter duration for next time. Also if you buy tickets together then your group shares a lane, so would recommend buying together only if small group, otherwise you won't have as much individual time. Axe throwing is awesome and pretty fun! Before checking out axeventures i had been a few times before; but I realized their axe are a bit old and won't out which makes it hard to stick to the wall, and also the target boards are a bit run down which makes it hard to stick since a lot of tiny sticks fall off the wall when you hit your target. The handles of the axe I used were flimsy, a bit shaky as if broken but taped together type of feel. Customer service is incredible; these guys are super friendly and always want to help or answer your questions, which was amazing! I just wish their axes weren't flimsy. On a whim, I took my son here for his 10th birthday. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was super fun. Age 10 is easily old enough (at least in terms of strength and dexterity) -- and his 80 year old grandparents were also able to do it. Axe throwing can be an intimidating proposition for some. Sharp objects generally tend to cause most people anxiety. I first developed a curiosity a couple years ago when I saw axe throwing while driving through San Marcos while touring the breweries in the San Diego area. But I didn't have the nerve to attempt it back then. During the pandemic, I had developed a comfort level with folding knives and very sharp culinary kitchen knives. It prepared me somewhat for the experience of axe throwing. I recently attended a Yelp Elite event at Axe Ventures on Park Ave near Rose Garden and Downtown San Jose. I returned a week later with four of my co-workers including two engineers from Korea for company team building. I was the only one who had thrown axes, which was for the first time a week prior. It is a large warehouse-type of space with quite a few fenced lanes and targets. They had the roll-up garage door in the back open, so it was a bit chilly. I would imagine during the summer it helps keep the space cool. Hopefully they have air conditioning for the sweltering summer months. The first thing I noticed was the emphasis on safety. The staff there had us sign waiver forms the moment I entered the door. The motion of throwing an axe at a wooden target reminded me a lot of bowling. You first select the axe, which vary significantly in weight and length. The heaviest ones can be challenging to hold steady with one arm, so two-handed throws are an option, although I found it to be somewhat awkward. The next step is positioning your feet along the lines painted on the concrete floor denoting height. There is an orange line for 5'3" and below, a blue line for 5'4" - 6'4" and then another orange line for 7'0". I stood somewhere behind the blue line. The key was coordinating my feet with my arm. I focused on the step. They told us to place our dominant side's leg forward, and then take a step forward while throwing the axe from a raised position over the head. You then bring it down while releasing it. From there, it seemed like it was a matter of practicing the location and making sure the head of the axe remains straight. I saw a lot of people unintentionally turn the head of their axe horizontally, which would make it near impossible to stick the axe in the wood. So there was a balance of strength and precision needed with each throw. Positioning in relation to the floor lines also seemed to help with the fine-tuning of the axe rotation. I tried to observe how the axe contacted the target. If it looked like it was under rotating, I took a step back. When it landed, if the axe head was facing too far down, I took a step forward. While my co-workers were initially hesitant to participate in axe-throwing (one of them was actually too scared to attend), within half an hour they were landing some really nice throws with the occasional bullseye. The two engineers from Korea were also landing a lot of their throws and had a lot of fun. They said that they hadn't seen any axe throwing in Korea at all. Toward the end, I was sticking the axe on almost every throw. They even gave us a ice pick axe to try out, which was small and dense. You have to be pretty precise to stick the ice pick axe in the target. At 40 dollars for an hour and 15 minutes per person, it's not inexpensive. So for me, it would probably be an occasional hobby rather than a regular thing. That said, I'm glad that there is a local spot to experience and recommend it for reasonably physically-coordinated folks. read more

It was our first time throwing axe and we had a blast. I liked how organized the whole thing. We got briefed on safety and tips on where to put our foot and how to throw the axe. 75 minutes passed by very quickly. We started out missing all our targets and was able to hit bullseye towards the end as we got better. So patience pays off! We also didn't have to throw hard so this game is perfect for people who may or may not be very athletic and couples going on dates. I'll come back again :) The best part was that there's also parking! The restroom was pretty clean, too. It wasn't very crowded in the venue as there were many lanes and reservations are required. If you're looking for a great stress relief and/or an activity to do with friends or family, then check out Axeventures! We booked a 9 PM reservation for Saturday night for 5. We checked in around 8:45 PM where they had us sign waivers electronically. There were multiple groups there. Right at 9 PM, they had us all congregate in the center while they do a demo. After, they assigned us to our designated lanes. The axes were located in the center table - free for all. We tested a few and when we turned back, groups were hogging a bunch of the small axes. The workers were kind enough to get us the small axes so we can use, so we appreciated that. The time was for 1 hr & 15 mins - it flew by so fast. We had so much fun & made really great memories. It has become cliche, but we went here for a date and we had a lot of fun. Our instructor did an awesome awesome (if you've had him you'll get that) job teaching us the basics: raise, step, slam! I was a little worried at first when my throws bounced back almost as fast as I had thrown them, but eventually I got the hang of the throw, and which size axe was best for me (just like bowling). My wife went through the same adjustment process, but by the end we were both throwing occasional bullseyes, and I even hit the 10 point dot a few times. Again, a little cliche, but it felt a little like a movie throwing axes while having Pantera blaring in the background...pretty fun stuff. Great way to try something new, and fun low pressure date given everyone will have to go through the learning process. read more

Well...my Norwegian blood did not come through for me in regard to my axe throwing skills. But it was definitely fun after I got past my initial fears. I watched way too many of the YouTube videos before going and I was convinced the axe was going to come back at me and lodge itself in my head, but thankfully it did not. I also grossly over estimated my strength if I thought I could throw it hard enough for it to bounce back at me. The guy in the lane next to us managed to do it though, but it just dropped at his feet. We made our reservations a day in advance for a Saturday at 3. It was completely booked for that time period. They get everyone in and do one group lesson and then cut you loose to throw axes. It was pretty funny because it was fairly quiet for everyone's first round of throwing. And then as people realized they weren't going to maim themselves there was almost this collective sigh of relief and then things livened up. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. People were laughing and cheering each other on, etc. The atmosphere is low key and the place itself is nothing fancy. It's in a warehouse and the boards could probably use a repainting but it doesn't take away from the experience or the fun. The guys working there were all really nice and helpful. Each group gets their own lane and I believe each lane accommodates up to five people. At each lane you get an assortment of axes to throw. You can buy different targets to throw at or just throw at the target painted on the wood at the back of your lane. You can also rent a larger axe and knives. We did the knives, which was fun. They have chips and drinks you can buy too. There are bar height tables and stools outside of the lanes and they have different games sitting out that you can play with if you want a break or while you are waiting for your turn. They also have a smash room where you can pay to destroy things, which actually sounds kind of fun. We initially thought the 75 minutes was going to be too long but it went by quickly and we had a lot of fun. I think it was the perfect amount of time. Any longer would probably be too much. It's nice to have something unique to do with family and/or friends. We all agreed it's something people should at least try once and that we would go back and try it again. read more

Really fun one of a kind experience! The atmosphere was fun, really open with garage doors on each side allowing for fresh air to circulate - which is great because axe throwing works up quite a sweat! The rock music in the background added to the overall ambiance. Kai was super awesome and led a brief instruction for the group. I started with throwing the small axe one handed and got 2-3 shots out of 10. I could not hit the 2 handed larger axe until Kai stopped by to give me a few pointers. After that I was making 8 or 9 out of 10! Which made the experience a lot more fun. Plus it was easier to pick up the axe from the board vs bending down each time.
