In February 2013, I began having what appeared to be significant urinary tract issues. I completed a Google search and located information for Dr. Mark Avon. I met with Dr. Avon a total of three times; during each encounter, he was very thorough as he attempted to accurately identify the source of my issue. He completed a thorough evaluation of my urinary tract and surrounding systems. He determined that my bladder was "pristine" but having identified what appeared to be a hardened area behind the bladder, he order a CT scan of the pelvis and abdomen. The results of the scan visualized a massive tumor in my uterus. The scan also visualized the lower sections of both lungs and identified the existence of two lung nodules. Dr. Avon immediately called me at home to advise me of these findings and also immediately reported this frightening news to my then primary care physician.
These findings resulted in further testing and scans which ultimately determined that I had stage 4b Uterine Leiomyosarcoma, an exceedingly rare, aggressive, and difficult to treat form of cancer. The cancer began in my uterus and very quickly metastasized to both lungs. At the time of my initial scan there were 12 nodules throughout both lungs. Within five weeks, the number of lung nodules had grown to 32.
Although the conventional medical wisdom prognosis for such a disease is devastatingly poor, I have been able to lead a relatively normal life under the circumstances and remain very hopeful. I am now receiving medical treatment, including chemotherapy, at the Stanford Cancer Institute's Sarcoma Center, one of only a few such medical facilities in the nation that provide the required specialized care.
Had it not been for Dr. Avon's professional diligence, I might not be alive today. He is absolutely one of the most knowledgeable, caring, compassionate physicians I have ever dealt with. I am truly blessed to have sought his care when I did. read more
