Dr. Thomas is an outstanding doctor. I'm afraid she is the last among a dying breed - the doctor with an independent office, who does a full systems review whenever you come in, and inquires about your health and life even unrelated to endocrinology. Some have argued she has the time to do these things because she doesn't take insurance and charges you for time spent. This is true. However, it's worth it to me to have at least one doctor who understands the full me, and I don't mind paying for it. She has done a wonderful job of tracking my nutritional deficiencies and helping me rectify them, and helping me manage my hypothyroidism. Today I am feeling better than I ever have before in both of those departments. What I love about her most is that she will discuss any problem I am having and doesn't stick to her endocrinology "silo." She keeps in contact with my doctors, too, so they know what is happening with me. I appreciate that I don't need to make a separate appointment to ask my primary care doctor about say, a question with my ear. During the pandemic, she has been doing a lot of phone visits, which is great. I hope she continues this into the future so I don't have to trek from San Jose to Los Altos to see her and discuss lab results. read more

I've been with Dr. Thomas several years - through 3 or 4 moves of her office. Initially I was thankful for the time she'd spend getting to the bottom of my fatigue. She also sent me to a specialist for fibromyalgia in 2009. My biggest complaint is when you know you're going to need a thyroid panel, you have to make a $250 appointment to get the lab order, understandable because she doesn't want to miss anything, but then you also have to make another appointment to get the results, even when all is well. I wish they'd tell you when you're lab numbers are off and what the concern is, rather than making you wait another two or three months for an appointment to get the lab results! I've gone through months of worry wondering what was wrong, only to finally get in there and be told all looks fine (then pay another $250! She doesn't bill insurance and wants payment in full on each visit). As a patient you have to be proactive here and call and call to get appointments, lab results, etc. The office will not call you, even to let you know they have your lab results. For as many years as I've gone to see Dr. Thomas each time she behaves as though we're meeting for the first time wanting all my history again and again! "Who diagnosed your fibromyalgia?" "You did Doctor, 6 years ago" Even "Who diagnosed Hashimotos?" when she's been treating me for it for years!! Scary! She seems very preoccupied. She's very old school in terms of treating Hashimoto's and auto-immune disease. She doesn't like prescribing NDTs, doesn't believe in or know how to treat other complications of having an autoimmune disease, like the fatigue, tissue damage or joint pain or how to keep inflammation in check. Never talked about the benefits or problems with certain foods, etc. Sad to say but I would not recommend this office. read more

While the others reviews are valid, it's not the full picture. Sure, she will spend the time with you... She's billing you for it at an outrageous price!!! She DOES NOT take insurance so she can spend more time and charge whatever she wants. She is a very nice woman, yet NEVER resolved my symptoms and basically made me feel like I was incorrect for saying they were related to my hypothyroid. She refused to agree to switch my medications to one I heard could help me (NDT), never advised me that I didn't have an auto-immune disease (which could be resolved by adding minerals), didn't catch that I was anemic/iron deficient (common issue with hypo) and had stage 1 adrenal fatigue (again, very common with hypo). These could have been addressed years ago when I started going to her if she ordered the right tests... But all she cared about was T4. She actually had the nerve to tell me my levels were good so maybe I had Fibromyalgia. Like all my issues weren't caused by Synthroid and my thyroid?!? Fibromyalgia ... She's not the only Endo that overlooks these issues, but she is the most expensive one ... For shame on all of them for not helping thyroid issues the way they should be ... I expected more from her. If you have Hypo, may I suggest what I have done and feel so much better... Go see a Naturopathic Doctor who will treat your symptoms and find easy solutions, like adding Magnesium, Selenium and Iron to your supplements and change your meds to natural desiccated thyroid (NDT). After years of struggling with my weight, at 32 I was diagnosed as hypo and over a decade of being on Synthroid I had accumulated multiple issues (candida, stage 1 adrenal fatigue, anemic, insomniac, itchy scalp, restless legs and arm pains, allergic to most food I was eating, alpha and game strep)... Once I got on the NatureThroid (which Dr. Thomas refused multiple times) and added back essential nutrients I started feeling like the old me again!! Pricey doctors that don't take insurance... Outstanding doctor. Have been going to her for endocrinology etc. issues for a few years first as a second opinion from another local endo. Actually still go to both but much prefer Dr. Thomas, other doctor seems to be a bit more aggressive in treating weight/has hookups on samples and once that is resolved will transition. Dr. Thomas has excellent bedside manner, it feels like an old school practice, and I never feel rushed or never even get the sense that SHE is ever rushed and doesn't want to see me. She promptly returns phone calls herself as well. She's trustworthy and knowledgable. highly recommended. read more

Very knowledgeable Endocrinologist who was referred to me by a Doctor I trust. That said, the office is "old school" (ie they do not use electronic medical systems and do not use computers for booking, etc). In addition, the follow-up is poor (ie left voicemail; no answer and had to follow-up again) and when I arrived for my consultation Dr. Thomas had not reviewed my blood test results that were sent over by my referring Doctor. Zero follow-up after the consultation and I had to spend over 1.5 hours tracking down blood test results which were taken with the requisition form provided by their office. In addition, I have heard from two independent people that have met with Dr. Thomas and they both stated that they would never go back (and use her again). That equals three people (including me) that were not happy and would not return. read more

Dr. Thomas has been my primary care physician for many years, since she bought the practice from my doctor who retired. Dr. Thomas is board certified in internal medicine as well as endocrinology, which is a strong asset as many endocrine disorders affect the body in multiple ways. Dr. Thomas gives you the time and effort you need. She knows plenty of local doctors for when a referral to a specialist is needed. I tend to select labs and specialists that are in the preferred provider network of my insurance, and these have worked well together with Dr. Thomas. Regarding cost, I end up paying out of pocket about twice per visit what the copay would be if I saw a doctor in the preferred network. Having been doing this for many years,, and having my kids' doctors in the preferred network, I can say that I myself am paying no more for Dr. Thomas overall because I end up visiting less often that I would if seeing one of the preferred network physicians. Goes the extra mile.Does not accept insurance but will give you list of your billing codes so you can submit your own. Prices are higher than in an HMO, but you get what you pay for. read more

I could not agree more with the other posters, and no I am not her mother or her sister or her best friend. :) She is seriously the best doctor my fiance and I have ever been to--super thorough, absolutely whip smart, and we always have felt that she was paying attention and listening to us. We continue to see her even though she is out of our network just because paying more for excellent care ultimately is a billion times better than cheap care lousy service. I have no idea where the favorable reviews come from. My experience with her was a BIG waste of time and money. Hours waiting in her lobby and over $600. On the administrative side, her assistant does not know how to run a schedule. I went in two times and both times were screwed up. The first time, especially; I waited for over an hour. My experience with Dr Thomas was about thyroid hormones. She is completely, hook-line-and-sinker conventional. That means she cannot resolve symptoms. Without explaining here how thyroid hormones work, I will say that she doesn't understand Hashimoto's thyroiditis, reverse T3, or any part of T3 in general. If your body does not produce adequate enzymes to convert the "storage thyroid" to the "active thyroid" you are really out of luck. Dr. Thomas' T4 only treatment will inflame and otherwise cause harm to your liver -- not to mention the myriad of other symptoms associated with hypothyroid. Check on stop the thyroid madness website for thyroid information and they could have providers worth considering. For MD's in this area, I'd try Holtorf in Foster City and Integrative Medical Associates in Los Altos. Also check Dr. Wilson's site for practitioners trained in his approach, Wilson's temperature syndrome. If you get your 23 and me done, you can check for any deiodination SNPs as well as any methylation related SNPs. You'll have to explain how those are related to detoxification, mitochondria, sulfation, etc to Dr. Thomas as well, if you do because she hasn't kept up on that either. read more

Dr. Thomas has been my endocrinologist for 18 years, and she is top notch in so many areas. She saw me through a bought of thyroid cancer, and she is very conscientious of making sure we continually monitor my levels and fine tune things so as to make every effort to keep the cancer from recurring. I never feel that I am being held to a certain time limit during my visits, she takes the time needed to review everything, and answer any questions or concerns that I may have. With every visit I have walked out of her office with new information on how to improve my health. I take the time to drive from the East Bay in order to visit Dr. Thomas, and that should speak volumes for the great quality of care she gives to her patients, as well as great personality and desire to help others. read more
