20 year avis preferred customer. This is the worst rental car location I've ever been too.

These people are utterly negligent. Our car broke down 4 miles from the pick up location and the manager refused to bring a car to exchange. The tow truck was estimated at a two hour wait in 97* heat. We were in the express lanes with no shoulder. A department of transportation vehicle assistance unit happened along and was able to reset the system, 10 miles later it seized up again. read more

I cannot ever recommend Avis rental car out of St. Louis. Shame on me for deviating from my usual, I never had trouble with Hertz or Enterprise. Avis charged me $1700 for a 5-day rental on a car that didn't run and they said was lost or stolen. I rented a vehicle from Avis. I drove from the airport to the hotel about 30 minutes away. At the hotel, I pulled up to the yellow curb and turned off my vehicle; I went inside to complete my room reservation. When I went back to my car, it would not start. I called roadside assistance, the number provided on the key ring for the rental. A gentleman came out four hours later, he gave the car a jumpstart and told me that the check engine light was on and it was not safe to drive. He advised that I call Avis to have them bring me a new vehicle. I called Avis and they said they don't do that but I should return the vehicle to the airport. I advised that it was not safe to drive the vehicle because that's what I was told by their roadside technician. Davis customer service rep told me because I fucked through Travelocity that I would have to contact Travelocity to solve the problem. I did call Travelocity, and they told me they could provide a refund for me as soon as I was able to return the vehicle to the airport. I opened a customer service ticket with Avis via email. For the next four days, I got rides from other people who were going to the same destination as I was not able to drive my vehicle back-and-forth from the work function to my hotel. I also found two people who have jumper cables, because I knew I would need a jumpstart to return the vehicle on the last day. In the meantime, my customer service ticket with Avis is open and we are corresponding via email. However, I am quite certain that this was an automated communication because no one ever spoke to me about what was actually going on. At each step of the way I detailed the difficulty that I was having. On the morning that my flight would depart, I had the vehicle jumpstarted, I drove it to the terminal to drop off one passenger and my luggage. I then drove to Avis to the return aisle. I turned off the vehicle, the technician said may I email you a receipt to you, to which I said yes please because I don't want to miss my flight. I got on the bus and I could see as we drove away she was not able to start the vehicle. No receipt in my email. I continue to correspond with my issue ticket to Avis via email, and I am assured that as soon as the vehicle is booked in as returned I will be credited for the time that the vehicle was not able to be used. A few days later I get a message from their loss prevention department telling me that the vehicle was stolen. Shortly there after I get an invoice from Avis with the recovery fees and all kinds of other fees totaling more than $1700. Yes, they charged my card within $1700 for a vehicle that ran for a total of about 90 minutes over the entire four day period that I had it. They think that I should pay for every day because the car was in my possession, they think that I should pay for the recovery because it was "stolen" or lost and then recovered. I forwarded that information to the customer service ticket that I had open with Avis, and they credited me a total of $1200 because the vehicle was returned and obviously not lost. However, I am still paying more than $500 for a vehicle that I could not use. I continue to attempt to communicate with Avis through their customer service ticket, but it appears hopeless. This is beyond embarrassing. And I feel absolutely robbed and taken advantage of... I had to depend on the kindness of strangers and other colleagues to get me to and from my destinations each day. I had a rental car that did not work without being jumpstarted, and the only 3 times it drove was when I left the airport and got to my hotel, when it was jumpstarted and moved from the hotel lobby area to the parking lot, and when it was jumpstarted to get from the hotel back to the airport. I have communicated with Avis on the phone and via email through their customer service ticket every step of the way. To be charged $1700 for a car that was not stolen or lost, then to still have a $500 charge for a 5 day rental that was only usable for a total of 90 minutes - to and from the airport and only with a jumpstart - is completely ridiculous. I deserve a full refund. This is criminal, and they should not be allowed to charge my card, it equates to flat out theft. I cannot ever recommend Avis rental car out of St. Louis. Shame on me for deviating from my usual, I never had trouble with Hertz or Enterprise. read more

Worst Avis service ever ! 2nd week in a row at this location and the wait is long. I was there the prior week and updated my credit card number on the file.. the following week i'm there they say my account doesn't reflect the update and I have to either call in or do it online. then why did I do it with the gentleman the previous week. That employee was standing there too - so she pulled up my account, she pulled up the wrong account, made me sign up for a different preferred member number and disregarded my concerns. I argued that the account she tied me to was wrong and its been inactive and she said its the only way for her to issue me a rental. I'm confused! My reservation in my hand reflected the right info - 30 min later - she pushed me out..Now my account is all messed up and 3 weeks later I still cannot get it corrected via Avis online support - SO annoying! read more

Upon arriving from Dallas late Friday night our driver Paul was awesome. Check in employees weren't thrilled to be there Thursday night working and it was obvious to the customer. Leaving St Louis Sunday night our driver Mark was unfortunately not motivated to even look up to see we were 2 women with 5 suit cases and didn't bother to help. I'm sorry, I would expect a little assistance from a service that your rental company offers. read more

I've never been to a rental agency this bad in my life. Not only was it understaffed, but I don't think the workers could have been any slower. The entire system is horrible. It needs to be overhauled, pronto. Incredibly rough experience, easily the worst rental experience once could imagine. read more

Not enough words for my disappointment. Ripped off is a good description of my experience with this Avis location. Avis did not honor my reservation price. Still trying to get my money back on erroneous charges. We'll see how this whole thing plays out. I will certainly update if the rest of my interactions go better than the initial vehicle pickup. Update: I dropped off the vehicle and was over charged. It seems that Avis doesn't understand that you can't tax a person twice. Absolutely the worst experience in rental cars. Avis/Budget will never get my business again. I wish I could give negative stars on this rating. read more

Why do I have an Avis preferred account? So that I don't have to spend any time waiting in lines, standing in lots, or otherwise delayed from travel. And in a dozen trips it's been good. Enter St. Louis. I have an email that says "Your Ford Taurus is in spot D24", the board says "Ford Taurus, Spot D24", but what's in D24...nothing. So I go to the counter and explain that where there should be a car, there is no car. With no apology or concern I'm told to go to the swap line and grab any car I want. 'Great!' I'm thinking, upgrade! But when I get to that swap line, all that's there are bottom of the barrel, no whistles, no bells, all Chevrolet Malibus. So now I'm taking a downgrade? Nope! I see a Taurus a couple spots over from where mine should be and think, you're mine. I hope in, get to the gate, and am told I have to return to the preferred counter. Hopefully to get the car put in my name...right? Wrong. I never really let this get me down, or express too much annoyance to the personnel at the counter. But they're not terribly concerned about the fact that this is kind of a nutroll for me. I never got so much as a 'sorry for the inconvenience'. I asked, "why can't have just take the Taurus, considering that's what I reserved?" "Because it's reserved for someone sir" "Okay, then where's the Taurus I reserved?" "Sir, I have no way of answering that." Super. I was told I could have a Hyundai Santa Fe, which would be great if I was hauling my family, but it's just me, and I'm driving 3 hours. I said I wanted a sedan and was curtly informed "Well if you can wait a few minutes you're getting a Chrysler 300"...not that I was given much of another option. Now the Chrysler probably IS an upgrade. It has leather, it's big, it reminds me of my long gone 92 Lincoln Towncar. But it doesn't get great mileage, and is probably much bigger than I need and prefer to drive. I probably would be less irritated if the employees would have shown any concern for the situation, they could even feign concern, just make me feel like it's an issue that isn't interrupting YOUR day more than my own. What I would have expected to happen is that when I had to go out of my way to find a car that SHOULD have been there. They would either get me the same reserved car (if it's on the lot) and upgrade whoever was expecting the Taurus. Or if it's the owner of Ford Motor Company coming in and he MUST have that car, upgrade me to a nicer sedan. But make it easy, I shouldn't have to turn tricks to get a car. Car was clean, slight cigarette smell, and the guys that clean/move the cars around were friendly as was the check out lady at the gate. Preferred booth personnel, not so great. You can sell me a shitty product, but if you handle customer service well I'll probably come back for more shit. They're selling a good product here, but I won't come back. read more

This was not so pleasant experience at the Avis check in center. They were overwhelmed even though it was almost midnight. They didn't know what cars they had or where they were located. I was sent to the wrong car in the rain then ran into a guy who worked there and he couldn't find the car, so we are walking around in the rain trying to find it. I did find it and the car was clean, but not totally fueled up. I didn't noticed that until I was long gone, but it was late and raining, so I just filled it up myself and ate the cost. Needless to say, Avis will not be my first choice in St. Louis anymore. read more

The staff here definitely has poor integrity and so does it's management. WATCH OUT for bait switch tactics and slipping you an upgrade because once you drive off, you have a "legally binding contract" Management will stand by the contract and acknowledges completely the sales tactics that are employed here and then reprimanded me like I was an employee that didn't know the rules. Yea this place definitely follows the motto of "We try harder (at ripping you off)" I complained to corporate as well and their response was "We'll take care of it. Trust us." My colleagues and I travel for work regularly and we've had this same bait and switch tactics at Milwaukee Airport, Denver as well as Columbus. Rent from Enterprise. Their corporate structures encourages integrity and happy customers because their branches are graded on a third party satisfaction survey. You're less likely to be treated like crap. read more

So listen to this: on a freezing cold, snowy day, 4 colleagues and I drove up at the Avis car return to return our car and take the shuttle to the airport. So as we're all walking toward the shuttle, 3 people get on and then the driver suddenly shuts the door in my colleague's face leaving both of us standing in the cold. My colleagues on the shuttle repeatedly asked the driver to open the door for us as we were knocking from outside. The driver ignored us all and drove off. The shuttle was not full. It was freezing outside with snow on the ground. But still the driver had no common sense, consideration for customers, decency, or humanity to open the shuttle doors. Needless to say, my colleagues and I will be taking our business elsewhere. Terrible service! No concern for customers! read more

The shuttle stops running at 10 PM, and it is a mile away from the baggage claim. All of the other rental companies were still running shuttles at 12 AM. Added to that, Avis changed my rental from a one-way to a round-trip, and wouldn't change it back, because they didn't have enough cars. They left my family and me stranded in St. Louis. Luckily, Hertz came through with a nice, clean car. Never touching Avis again. read more

This location at the STL airport simply does not have the refinement of the AVIS brand I have witnessed elsewhere! On check in, the computers were down, and though that is not the fault of the two agents manning the check in desk, it was unacceptable for no apologies or announcements made as to why it took over 15 minutes per customer to obtain a car. Without forthcoming information, the huddled masses were ready to mutiny! Questioning the overall efficiency of this location's staff, I decided to allow plenty of time for my car return. Driving in to the return area, one arrow pointed left on one sign and on another sign it pointed right. No AVIS rep was visible and cars were faced ever which way! I drove around the lot twice before I found the area for car return by following an employee who said "follow me". I would have to say a big NO for future rentals from AVIS at STL. Sad! read more

They scammed me and I had to pay for an upgrade. When I saw a misc charge from Avis i called them and they said I got an upgrade. I've never once asked for an upgrade for any rental car, nor insurance. I think it's a waste of money. So I was shocked I got charged for one. I always keep rental car contract receipts and sure enough I was stupid and initialed next to upgrade. They never told me or asked me about the upgrade. Just "initial here, here, here, and here". It was late and I was tired and I trusted Avis so I didn't think about reading the fine print. So DOUBLE CHECK your contract!!! Take an extra 5 minutes to look it over. Bc these people are not honest. read more

This business is terrible. I was rented a car that had some initial problems. I took it back and the employee who checked the car decided to "test" it by speeding through the busy parking lot at a truly insane rate of speed with both my wife and I in the car. Both my wife and I were terrified the entire time. I am not exaggerating. The employee is lucky they didn't hit anyone. When I then needed to extend my rental by one day due to a cancelled flight, this office was impossible to contact. Their phone number only worked intermittently, often returning a "could not be completed as dialed" error. When I did get through, I got an automated answering service that tried to transfer me as requested but consistently dropped all calls. When I stayed on the line as if I was on a non-touch-tone phone, it dropped me then too. This does not happen sometimes. It happens EVERY SINGLE TIME. It is literally impossible to contact this agency by phone, which frankly put seems to be a deliberate and highly dishonest practice on their part. This is the single worst customer service experience I have ever had. read more

OK, so my car got into a little fender bender. Actually it was more of a bumper remover and I needed to find some alternative means to get to work while it was in the shop. Mr. Priceline chose Avis for me. I was able to get into a Toyota Camry for $23/day. Great job Mr. Priceline! I've never been a big fan of Avis and I'm still not a fan. They are set up primarily for those coming in from the airport. I get that. I know when I have some one drive me there it's gonna be a pain in the butt to bring a "non-Avis" car into the lot. So yes, it was a big pain in the butt again. But you don't have many options for a rental car on a Sunday in St. Louis, other than the airport. I was not impressed with the customer service. I don't think the customer service rep was listening to what I was saying. She's holding my Missouri Driver's License which shows my St. Louis address and asks me "what are you in town for?" When I say "I'm local", she responds "Are you going to try to catch a Cardinal game while you are here?' When I'm leaving she told me to enjoy my trip? Maybe she meant the 5 mile trip home? Who knows! Anyway, in the end the car did what it was supposed to. But, I wouldn't chose Avis the next time, unless of course Mr. Priceline says I must. read more

I used to like this rental station at Lambert Airport. However, they now have a new deal where the bus driver drops you off in the middle of the parking lot and you have to schlug all your stuff over to your car, no matter where it's parked. Avis - Car Rental Near Me - Saint Louis, Missouri

What a coincidence that the only other person to rate Avis in St. Louis was a fellow Phoenecian? But I digress. Unfortunately I didn't have as good of an experience as Michael. I travel a lot, usually every other week, if not more. I'm a member of Avis First which means (I think) I'm supposed to get better service. Not usually. Tonight I arrived at rental facility to find there was no car in the space I had been directed to. Okay, no big deal, go to the counter. But that's just it, I signed up for the Preferred Service so I WOULDN'T have to wait in line. Ended up missing dinner with my co-worker because Avis didn't have their act together. read more

After the 30 minute wait in line (even with an online reservation that was paid), the experience was fast and easy. This place serves Budget and Avis together and the line is for both customers. As others mentioned, there were not enough people working for how many people needed to be helped. I think they (and other car rental companies) want to push their select or "preferred" memberships so they don't make an effort for the average customer. Thankfully once I did get to the counter, it was a 2 minute check in process and then 1 minute walk to my car. So without the line, it could have been a 5 minute operation! The drop off people had no line. The car was nice, except that it smelled faintly of smoke. We didn't have time to ask for an exchange after waiting in line so long. read more

We booked a car with AVIS because we flew out and arrived in St. Louis around 1:00 AM and had a 2-3 hour drive to Fort Leonardwood to see our son graduate boot camp. To our surprise, the long line of 20 people were all out of a car even when we pre-booked. Seriously like a Seinfield episode. Had to hitch a ride with another nice family going to the same place who got the very last car. THEN Avis had issues giving us a refund. Not only did they give away our cars, but we had to wait 3 weeks for a refund and call back 3 times. Seems like this company needs to get their act together. A big name as well, and I expected more when I rented from them. read more

By far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. The female manager turned away myself & 2 other customers at 8pm on Monday 1/10/2022. That's 3 different people who all had reservations booked and paid for through our companies. Why would she turn down business that was already agreed upon and paid for in advance? My interpretation, she was not interested in working but only wanted social hour with the other 5 people at the desk doing absolutely nothing. I went to Hertz had no problem & was out the door in 10 minutes. read more

Avis bought Budget so we had to wait in line behind Budget customers to get our Avis car. When we finally got our car it smelled so bad with cigarette smoke it knocked me over when I opened the door. I went back inside to ask for another car, and had to wait in line behind another Budget customer who did not have her conf# nor did she know what name her reservation was under. Geeze! We got into the new car, it did not smell like smoke but it was not clean either. There was lip-kiss marks on the driver's window and trash in the ash tray, but we kept it so we didn't have to go get back in line! When we dropped the car off we were in a hurry so we figured we would eat the gas fee. Check out took too long! Then we had to wait 10 min for the van to leave although it was full and already to go???? Going back to Alamo! read more

Avis here is hit or miss. Sometimes I get awesome service, upgraded to an SUV at no cost etc. Other times poor service...this time, the driver just blew passed the preferred drop point and said that no body replied where in fact he never asked, they bumped me up which was great but...the car had no been cleaned or it was cleaned poorly on the inside, dirty car, I pulled out a mile up the road and the fuel said 7/8 full, it took me 3 attempts and 30mins just to get on to customer service just so they don't stick me for $5 in fuel. The agents checking cars back are nice sometimes and others very rude and not customer friendly at all. read more

I really think yelp needs to make negative stars. I wish I had seen reviews beforehand. So I end up with these smucks because I went third party thru Priceline (which also has proved to be a mistake). I wait in line almost 30 minutes. I get up there, there is a lady that comes back from being helped. Turns out that they gave her assigned car to someone else...which is exactly what they did to me. I requested an economy car, they gave me an impala. That same lady was driving off in my impala. So I go back inside, they give me a Ford edge. They neglect to change my paperwork. Rosita (my check out lady inside) was pleasant but she should have made sure all my stuff was in order. I'm driving out to leave...the young lady at the gate is nice. I leave. I don't like this rental. It was keyless and had a hard time locking the car so I wouldn't rent another. My hotel is literally less than a block from the rental place. I turn my car in full. They end up charging me $74...when I inquire, Priceline says they cannot give me a breakdown...sorry. Then they call themselves investigating. Turns out AVIS charged me for gas when I turned in the car full. When I came to return the car, there was an error because my paperwork didn't match so I had to go inside. The attendant that was asking for my phone number wrote on the receipt he generated outside and I ended up giving it to AViS. So basically I have nothing to verify I returned the car full. I am so pissed...I won't rent from them anymore. Now emails are flying but no one has the decency to deal with the customer directly. I am just cause number...DO NOT RENT HERE. IT WOULD BE BETTER TO RIDE THE BUS read more

I was very pleased with the service! I wound up here by accident after a very long day, and didn't realize I went to the wrong company. This was the worst rental experience with a rental car company pretty much EVER and I travel a lot. The shuttle van never showed up which left me sleeping in the airport until they FINALLY answered the phone four hours later. I made at least seven calls to them between the hours of 2am to 7am with zero response including multiple calls to the national number. Then - to add insult to injury - when I finally got there, the manager, instead of owning the fact that his shuttle van did not run as it was supposed to, tried to claim I was in the wrong place and that's why I wasn't picked up. Hmmmmm let's see -- I stood there (initially) waiting 30 mins with other people from my flight who also rented with them but I guess after running back in to the ladies room, I'm must not have been able to find my way back ... across the street ... right outside of the terminal (yes, that would be sarcasm). Never mind that the airport security kept an eye out for them so that I could go inside and stay warm and my phone showed multiple (unanswered) calls and a snarky Twitter shout-out. That all being said, the woman at the counter who assisted me was FABULOUS!! She apologized profusely for the delay and upgraded me and gave me a free day. That, sir, is customer service NOT questioning the basic competency of your clients. . #dobetter read more

Rented a car from Avis...returned the car with a full tank of gas, which is documented on my return receipt, but they still charged me for fuel. I contacted customer service and sent a copy of my return receipt...their response, "The documentation does not reflect adequate details in order for us to consider compensation on your case file." Avis-produced documentation showing I returned the car with a full take is not sufficient for Avis to know that I returned the car with a full tank. What is the purpose of the return check-in process if they don't accept and/or trust their own documentation of the status of the returned car? Their requirement is "a copy of the gas receipt from the actual gas station that includes the name of the station, the address, the dollar amount and the number of gallons purchased, showing you purchased fuel just prior to return." Or credit card statement. The tank was full, so why do they need any other proof? Also why does it matter when the tank was filled up? Although I filled it up on the way back to Avis, I could have filled it up days earlier and just left the car sit all that time, not using any gas. Would that somehow disqualify the full tank of gas? Why does it matter what station I filled up at, how many gallons I put in, or how much it cost? Why does any of that matter....The tank was FULL. How can that be disputable? The only fact that matters is if the tank was full or not. It was full. This is ridiculous. I was also charged for liability when I actually declined it. The counter person asked if I wanted coverage and I told her no. She asked me to sign saying I declined the coverage....little did I know she actually had me sign for liability (always take the time to read EVERYTHING regardless how much you're urged to hurry through the process). My reservation also said decline for all coverage. Customer service refunded only 50% (originally offering only 25%). Beyond frustrating. I will not use Avis again, nor will I recommend them. read more

We arrived in the middle of the night and there was a line 13 people long and only 1 front desk employee working. It took a LONG time to check in, but the lady who helped us was upbeat and helpful, even chatty, the whole time. All of the customers noticed her great attitude. It made the long wait a little easier. Our car was clean and we didn't have any problems with it. We did have to rent a car seat with the car and it was not ideal. The seat is the bottom of the line EvenFlo and had been Febreezed so much that our son smelled like the seat for the whole trip. The seat was horrible to buckle in and made the car rides that much harder. When we turned in the car the employees that helped us were super friendly (nicer than most people we met in St. Louis).
