Terrible experience. The rental car was in unacceptable condition. We rented a full size SUV, Ford Expedition. The car we received had over 75,000 miles, was visibly damaged on the outside, dirty inside and out, and reeked of smoke. Even worse, the tires were extremely worn down, which is a serious safety concern. I expect much higher standards from a major rental company. Would not rent from this location again. We arrived just before midnight to find Avis was our only choice of car rental company. After waiting for a previous customer and then another 40 minutes as the attendant struggled to input our information into the computer, she told us "the computers don't work after 12 o'clock." Avis is absolute garbage company to rent your cars from!! The lady who checked the rental car to us was yelling at the budget agents, was very rude and unprofessional towards me as a customer. Shortly after checking out our SUV all the check lights lit up on the dash board. Some of the turned off, but the check the tire light was on and the car was swerving every which way!! The lady with the dreadlocks was so uninformative and rude yet again towards me when I brought this to her attention the next day. She said that, "We don't change the oil or service the cars until thousands and thousands of miles after the check lights come on." I told her that is not safe! What if something had happened due to your companies negligence!! She stared at me with a blank stare and shrugged her shoulders!!! She checked me out instead of exchanging the cars!!! Now I didn't have enough funds for a new one so my fiancé had to use her credit card to get us a new vehicle! All in all this place is horrible!! They DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR SAFETY AND WELL BEING!!! Do you know if you call their 24 hr. Emergency Road Side Service you get a chatbot... not a person... then the promised tow truck... which was to arrive between 9:17-9:47 Am... did I mention my car broke down at 7:22 AM... never arrived... so I had to secure my own tow truck and pay for it out of pocket... then you must send a letter to an email address to try to get a refund for both the car and the tow truck... then today they are trying to charge my credit card for $1,385.61... for some unknown reason... I can not say anything good about them at this time. Perhaps they will step up to the plate and take care of me today and if that happens I will add to this review but for now they do not even rank one star. But I had to give them one to get this posted. read more

Do not rent here - if you must, at least double/triple check your car for items you might have left as you will not get anything returned of value. In a hurry to catch my flight I left a $750 suit in the trunk of my rental. I realized as soon as I got through security and immediately filled out a lost and found form online which is the only way to even contact the company regarding lost items - I would've been able to recover or at least secure the suit immediately if they had a direct line to lost and found/front desk but of course they don't because they do not care. Less than a day later I sent my cousin to Avis to pick the suit up which I figured must've been found and turned in.... It was "not turned in," which clearly means it was stolen out of the trunk by one of the employees. There is no recourse for anything left behind that ends up stolen. I realize it was my oversight but when dealing with what should be a respectable brand name company I would expect not to be blatantly robbed and then treated with utter disregard. read more

Being disappointed is a understatement. It's very clear to me that your employees do not take the time to inspect the vehicle for safety concerns. The tires (photos attached) is beyond the point of replacement and is unacceptable to rent to anyone! Then to have me wait in line to receive a vehicle (photos attached) that is clearly not what I reserved. Then again to wait in line to receive a vehicle that finally was safe to drive and met my requirements as a mid sized SUV. It shouldn't be up to the counter agent to try and convince me a Toyota corolla Cross is a mid sized SUV is completely a waste of my time and to be completely honest with you I was at that point losing my patience with the incompetence of the counter agents. I hope you can retrain your employees to understand that bald tires on a vehicle is unsafe and can cause a accident that can result in death driving a car with no tread. Every vehicle should be inspected before renting it out to anyone is horrible and shows me the laziness that the employees can not take the time to do that. read more

My mom rented from them and the car smelled like cigarettes. She contacted them to let them know that the smell was putrid and they didn't do anything concerning it. We decided to rent from them again (midsize) and the car they tried to give us was a compact. We told them what we paid for and they gave us a midsize car but the car was filthy. Whenever I rent a car from here, it's always super quick and easy. Basically any time I'm in Syracuse, I rent from here. The people are nice and efficient, although some aren't the best at making small talk, but that's no biggie. I've always had a fairly good selection with cars. I've always driven something different, but I kinda like driving new/different cars. I've gotten a free upgrade twice because they didn't have the car in the class I reserved for, so that was kinda nice. I'm definitely coming back here, pick up and returns are always quick, efficient and easy. Plus I find the people helping me while I return the car to be much more fun to talk to. Whatever you do, DO NOT prepay your rental to get the lower rate, because the second you press the button, you cannot cancel your reservation without losing a $50 "Processing Fee", nor can you change the date of that rental without adding a $36 fee "which is the best they can do." Lets start when I picked up the car. It was dirty both inside and out. The windshield on the inside had the nice window film as I call it. I purchase 2 hand towels to clean it best I could. Did not work and then on top of the towels I have to buy a GAL of windshield washer fluid as there was none in the car. Then to top the entire rental off I asked if I could pay cash when I took the car back I asked about paying cash. I paid $110.00 was all I had for the charge of $113.59. These people at Avis in Syracuse Airport could not figure out the charge would be $3.59. Nope they billed credit card the full $113.59. Some place my $110.00 cash payment went missing. I was told by Avis they will credit my account $110.00 for the cash payment I made in Syracuse Airport. Good work people renting out dirty cars and can't handle cash payments easy. Kudos to Michelle and Fran at SYRACUSE AIRPORT who assisted me with a complicated return due to the POOR, INEXCUSABLE SERVICE of the LAGUARDIA AIRPORT LOCATION. Fran took the time to review my rental disaster from LaGuardia, Michelle assisted with corrections to my charges and both were very pleasant and understanding of the ridiculous problems LaGuardia created. I received a refund and am now aware of LaGuardia's poor service and shady operations at the expense of travelers. I am grateful to the Syracuse Avis for stepping up to address a problem that was not their fault. read more

SHAME on you, Avis, for taking advantage of people--including my Marine. I booked a car rental for my son as he was flying to Syracuse to go to the military base there for duty. Car rentals at airports aren't cheap, so I went to Priceline to find the best pricing. The rate (allegedly including taxes and fees) was above his meager military budget, but I reserved an SUV for him at his request (necessary 4 wheel drive due to impending snow storms.) When he arrived, they charged him more than twice the price we were quoted on the priceline booking. This young man, with his excellent training in discipline, weaponry, martial arts, armored vehicle operation, and his unmarred driving record, was treated like a mark and charged excessively, beyond his means. He was unable to reach me and needed to move forward (or I would have told him to walk away from Avis immediately,) so he absorbed the excessive expense as he felt he had no options at that time. My Marine's younger sister (she is 20 and also a Marine) has rented cars several times (not Avis) and has never had a car rental company take advantage of her, so he (we) did not see this coming. Avis, you absolutely should be ashamed of your treatment of people, especially a young military man trying to do his duty. His car rental cost him more than double his income for his military duty in Syracuse. That is pathetic and immoral. read more

We went to return the car and was told that the guy who usually checks cars in wasn't there that day. I'm not sure who the guy who told us this was because he was dressed in street clothes but I assume he works for Avis. He was very condescending and rude when we asked what was needed of us to return the car and where we could find their front desk. At the desk the line took a good half hour to even speak to someone. The lady was informative but anything but friendly. On top of all of this we were told that since we picked up the car at 4 on one side of the country but returned it at 5 on the eastern side that it was considered late and we'd be charged close to $200 additionally. We spent over $2,000 without the fees and are a family that takes many road trips and have used many other companies who provide better service and actually account for the fact that this country has time zones. The woman behind the counter was rude, disclosed personal information so loudly that other customers overheard, which embarrassed my husband and then she refused to refund our money...customer service was worse...the man at the other end of the phone refused to take my complaint, wouldn't give me his name and refused to transfer me to a supervisor...save yourself the aggravation and embarrassment and use one of the other rental agencies down the road...otherwise you too will pay for a car you ll never get to drive! read more

Terrible experience with the Avis Syracuse. Made reservations, asked questions, was assured everything was set, then my two sons show up to pick up the car and they are denied. Stuck 2,700 miles from home with no way to get a rental car because my son is only 21 and does not have a credit card -- both of these facts were approved during the reservation process. He was told Avis would just put a $200 hold on his debit card (which has a credit card symbol) but the people at the counter just kept apologizing -- no solutions were offered. Called Corp Customer Service - they apologized, said it was an internal training issue, then left my two sons stranded at the airport. Had to pay double for a cab and they weren't able to make the stops they had planned on their way to the university in Ithaca. Will never, ever rent from Avis again. Would give negative stars if it were an option.Horrible!!! read more
