I rented one-way from Avis at JFK, not having been told that the drop location would be closed on Thanksgiving. That's okay, except that when I got to the airport, everything was closed, and there was nowhere marked as a key drop off. I called the main number and they told me that if I couldn't find the key drop, I should just lock the keys in the car. (I figured they wouldn't tell me this unless they had a way to get into the car; plus, in this location, the cars would be very, very easy to steal if they were left unlocked with the keys inside.) The next morning, I got not 1 but 2 rude phone calls from the Reading office of Avis demanding to know where the keys were. When I told her that I'd locked them inside as instructed, she called me a liar. This is definitely among the top 5 most shockingly bad customer service experiences of my life. They ended up charging me for a lock-out which I disputed with my credit card company. Do yourself a favor and avoid the Reading office of Avis. read more
