I actually rented from Budget at this location, but I doubt that the experience would have been very different since they seem to operate as one business. Anyway, EVERYTHING about this rental with the exception of the car itself (which was fine) was underwhelming! First, they didn't have the car that I reserved. Second, I needed something with a hatch back (since I had a big cardboard box to carry with me that wouldn't fit in a sedan's trunk) and they tried to put me in a sedan. When I told them that wouldn't work, they told me that the sedan was the only car that they had available and that I should at least go and look at it. Which I did and it wouldn't work. So, I called the 800 number to see if they could help. They told me that since the contract had been opened, that they couldn't help me; that I would have to deal with the location. So, I went back in and told the lady, who couldn't have seemed to care less about my issues, that the sedan wouldn't work, she miraculously came up with a Ford escape...which worked fine. They told me that the car had a full gas tank, which it didn't. Also, when I wanted to add an additional driver (my son who rents from them all of the time) they insisted that he come in with me to show his driver's license. When I told them that I would be picking him up in a different city, they insisted that we go to a local location to show his drivers' license.....this was ridiculous! He rents from them frequently and they have his information on file. We offered to email a copy of his drivers license and they said no! It was against their corporate policy...I say BS! Anyway, the location looked Ghetto and the clerks did the bare minimum that they had to do...overall, not a very good experience! read more

Horrible experience. The representative was very nice and I don't blame him..BUT. I rented a car and when I got there...no cars were available. He said that they had to get cars from the airport. I used this location to avoid airport fees but I will gladly pay the fees from now on just for the convenience. This was the 2nd bad experience that I had within location. (Obviously if I had known I would have just booked somewhere else.) I asked them to provide some documentation so I could possibly contest this later with the rental car company. In response to my (what I thought was fairly reasonable) request, they said "I am deciding to not proceed with the sale. Good luck finding a car." I rented a car from the Avis location at Crabtree Mall in Raleigh. The car was very dirty, with pieces of debris in the hatchback area, weeds and outside debris in the driver and passenger sides, and a greasy hair bonnet between the seats. I went inside to complain, and the lady looked at my pictures and said it might be possible to get a discount due to the car's condition. Please note, when you rent a car here, you have to initial that you could be charged a $450 cleanup fee if they feel it doesn't meet their standard when returned. When I returned the car on September 16, 2024, at 11:00 AM, I asked the man at the counter about the discount the previous lady had mentioned, as cleaning the car and wiping the interior delayed my road trip by an hour. He said they don't do discounts. I asked for a manager, and he said he was the operations manager. I asked for his name, which was Desmond, and he gave a last name, but I couldn't remember it, so I asked again. He looked frustrated and told me to leave without repeating his last name, while threatening to call the police. I was shocked because I was not angry and had never been threatened with the police before. There are several issues I have with this experience. I am a retired DOJ federal law enforcement officer who respects the law. I am also an older Black male with no police record. I was deeply insulted because this Avis representative, who appears to be of African descent, threatened to weaponize the police against me over a simple business matter. He felt he could make the issue go away by intimidating me and using my skin color against me when he brought up the threat of the police. He would not have threatened a white individual with the police and the issue would have been processed. Please note, RPD and my organization have made great strides in building bridges between disenfranchised communities and the police. In fact, my son-in-law is a member of RPD. Sometime after I left the Avis office, I noticed the Avis employee who threatened me, carrying a leaf blower to the parking lot. In my opinion, this Avis representative is using forced air to clean the car instead of a vacuum cleaner, which removes pollen, dust, street matter from shoes, etc. The issue is that I was transporting someone with serious health issues and a 3-year-old child. The adult I was transporting has a compromised immune system and requires a generally clean environment. This is why it took me an hour to properly clean the car, which I assumed Avis had done. The last issue is that I paid Avis full price for a product, and they did not deliver their part of the deal. The public assumes that when they rent a car from Avis, they will get a safe, clean car in good mechanical condition. Therefore, because of this breach, I requested a discount or credit for a future rental. read more

Then they told us that we should stop asking why and leave and call customer service after we asked them if they could find a car elsewhere. Absolutely horrible. My experience with Avis has been exquisitely awful--from before I even had a rental with them to long after my rental had ended. Please do learn from my experience. Avoid Avis. A week before spring break our au pair got into an accident with our minivan, which prevented us from using it to travel to Florida to visit my wife's parents. My mother-in-law called an Avis store and told us she was able to secure us a rental minivan. Having worked at Budget many years ago, I knew that there was very little chance that the store actually had a rental for us. Calling around, I confirmed that the Avis store did not, in fact, have a car for us on their lot. My mother-in-law had unknowingly been passed through to a national number where employees are incentivized to set up a rental without any regard as to whether a car actually exists for you to use. When calling them, if you listen to the end of their phone recording you'll be given the option to speak with the local branch instead of their national team. However, the option to rent a car comes before the option to speak to the local branch. By default, Avis will send you to their national team without telling you that's what they've done. Nor will the national representative let on that they aren't a part of the local branch or that there's a very real chance you could be carless when you arrive to pick up your rental. Getting through to the local branches was a nightmare, but after several hours on the phone I was finally able to learn that the airport would be the best place for me to try to secure a rental. After calling the airport and indicating that I wanted to reach the local branch, the local branch apparently didn't pick up and I was sent again to the national number. Being wise to what had happened, I hung up and tried again until, an hour later, I was finally able to reach someone at the airport and secure a rental, an underwhelming Chrysler Pacifica that came with a gas tank that was only 2/3 full, despite the rental agreement's claim that it was full and should be returned full, and that routinely decided of it's own volition that it just didn't feel like letting you use CarPlay that day. Soon after returning the car, I received a letter from Avis informing me that I would be billed $450 due to "excessive interior dirt - sand." I knew when I dropped off the car that there was a light amount of dirt in the car, the amount that any small family would have generated in a week. When I called the company to dispute the charge, I informed them of just how excessive it was to charge a customer $450 for light vacuuming. However, the representative I spoke to completely ignored this line of reasoning and it became clear that they were just after more money. Their policies show that they simply don't care whether their means of obtaining that money is ethical or not. Looking online, I can see that replacing the carpet in a car costs $200-$500. In other words, for a 6-7 minute vacuuming job, they were charging us the upper end of the cost to entirely replace the vehicle's carpet. This fee is the most absurd I have ever been charged by any company, anywhere. Avis is awful, and it deserves to go out of business. After giving me an experience like this, I can only hope that day comes sooner rather than later. Please do consider how you might hasten Avis's demise by using another rental service, or better yet by using Turo, Getaround, or some other alternative. Avis is awful. Avoid Avis. read more

Waited in line for an hour for a crappy car that smelled of cigarette smoke high 50k mileage and it broke down after being driven 20 miles. Avis made no concessions for the day I could not use the car and it sat there dead, did not offer to come and swap it out, instead insisted I drive 20 miles to the airport, wait in line, get another car and they tow this one. No compensation for the inconvenience. When I told them forget it, they charged me for 2 extra days and cousomer (no) service (which used to be excellent at Avis in the old days) refused to offer any credts or compensation. I am still battling it out with my credit card company. I will NEVER, Never rent from Avis again. They depleted their stock of cars and have a policy of no service. Very disappointed in the level of customer service or lack there of, at this location. I reserved a car (or so I thought) online for this location to avoid having to pick up a car at the airport. When I arrived, the agent told me there was no car for me. They were not expecting any pickups and that they did not have any cars. The agent went on to say that bookings online don't account for actual inventory and told me I needed to call customer service. Zero empathy, no apology and HE seemed irritated. Do NOT book at this location, worst customer experience of my life. Currently in line to get my car from Avis/Budget/Payless. we have been in line for an hour and ten minutes and probably have another hour until we actually get the car. (Update: I started my watch timer 5 mins after we got in line and it took 2 hours until our rental pulled up). We booked our rental and insurance online prior to our trip hoping the process would take 10-20 mins as it typically does for every other rental I've booked. The shuttle from the airport took 40 minutes to arrive. When we arrived to the store location the line was wrapped around the building and flowing into the car cleaning area . My flight and picking up baggage at baggage claim took less time than getting a rental car that was already reserved. This is the worst customer service I've ever had. Every customer in line had to cancel plans and was extremely frustrated with this experience. I'm sure no one in this line will ever book with Budget and Avis again. No employees talked to anyone in line the whole 2 hours we stood there. When we finally got up to the counter the employee started "this has been like this for months". This location certainly ranks as one of the ***WORST*** rental experiences. I'm not sure if it's a corporate office or franchise office. Regardless it sucked! Rental was reserved approx. week before and upon arriving I was unable to find the actual AVIS location at the mall. I attempted to call the phone number listed but automated response said it couldn't be contacted at this time. I then tried to call corporate number and asked for assistance, no assistance. I ended up asking 6 different people outside/inside as to the location, finally found a mall employee who pointed me in the general direction. There were 2 agents working the counter and initially 4 parties ahead of me, most not actively in line but waiting within the office. While there I spoke to a person waiting on the side who had encountered similar issue/hassle of finding the AVIS office location within mall. Throughout the wait period of ~40 minutes both agents showed little sense of urgency/bordering on arrogance in servicing the line of renters. During the wait two additional parties showed up, my position came up as next and the agent asks the 2 new people if they had previous reservations and if picking up, one responded yea to previous reservation while the last person in line had just that day made a reservation. She bypassed myself and next in line and started dealing with the last person to arrive and work on some issues due to same day reservation. We were in dis-belief, after a few minutes she resumed processing the next in queue. Presented typical forms that required signature/initials without any sort of explanation. At least the other agent provided insight to customer's what they were signing/initialing. Went out to do normal inspection as to scratches/defects. No issues there however the car certainly wasn't cleaned, hadn't even bothered to remove items left over from the previous use. There was change and trash left in the forward console area and eventually found a USED cloth face covering in the driver's side storage area. In today's climate of COVID all companies from restaurants/hotels/ride-share are elevating the need for cleanliness/sanitizing, this location didn't follow at least minimum standards of cleanliness. My travel companion had a sanitizer that I used to clean the steering wheel/dash etc. Upon returning the vehicle on the following Wednesday, again experienced what seemed to be a longer delay then needed at ~23 minutes, same two agents. Speaking to the person in line in front of me he mentioned the airport location stated he could return the his rental to any location, presumable without an added fee. I asked the agents if I could return my rental to the airport. The first agent said it was a charge, I asked how much and she responded $100.00 to $500.00, $500.00? She then stated that was what one renter was charged to return to New Jersey, so I said to RDU. She returned to the $100.00 fee, the other one spoke up and stated $25.00 - $75.00 for airport return fee. According to Google it's 11.3 miles via I-40W. My assumption if there's a definitive number of miles according to Google why can't AVIS provide a definitive dollar amount to return it to the airport? Highly suggest to avoid renting from this location, go to the airport and hopefully they will provide a better rental experience! Raleigh Airport Avis Car Rental: I was very disappointed with the level of service I received. I reserved a 7 passenger SUV and the location was unapologetic when they told me that they did not have that vehicle available. I stood there dumbfounded because I had called the day before to confirm the reservation, and was assured that it was available. The clerk and manager offered me a 5 passenger SUV as if that was all they could do as I stood in front of their counter with 7 people and 4 large suitcases. They told me that this was an issue they were having and that there was nothing else they could do. As I continued to stand there still dumbfounded about what we were going to do after traveling thousands of miles to be at a ceremony in less than two hours they insisted that they were deadlocked and still offered no apology. I had no other alternatives and they were willing to cancel my reservation and send me on my way without offering any compensation or solution. I asked to speak with the manager again as he tucked himself away in the back as several customers continued to be disappointed about their requested vehicles not being available. When he resurfaced I asked if he was able to give us two vehicles for the price I was quoted for the 7 passenger. He agreed to give us the 5 passenger SUV and Nissan Altima at the agreed price. I was told that I would not be charged for the Nissan and that there would a zero balance when we returned the car. After returning the cars I have multiple charges one for the SUV and another for the Nissan. This company has been a joke from beginning to end. I will be contesting the amount I was charged for the Nissan because it was not what we were told. I will not be using this company anymore due to its lack of professionalism and integrity. read more

After reading terrible reviews with photos, I decided to cancel my reservation (this was at 9:30 am). Before I could proceed to the final step, I had to check a box accepting cancellation fees. The amount was not listed. On the next page I was informed that I was charged a "no show" fee of $150. The agent would not waive the fee. Avis received $150 from me for an hour of their time. Worst rental experience ever - didn't have my car and didn't give a $hit! I rented a convertible and was called the morning of my rental and told that they had to substitute another car - this wasn't what I wanted, but it was fine by me. I told them that I would be arriving a few hours after my scheduled pickup and confirmed my reservation. I called on my way to the office to let them know I'd be there before closing and they said that there were no cars available and my only option was to call Budget's 1-800 customer service and try to book another reservation the next day. The morning of our trip we went to pick up our rental car from the Avis on Glenwood Ave at the Crabtree mall, when we got there we were told our vehicle was no longer available, despite confirmation. Was given an upgrade, ok cool. We were going out of town that day and could not turn back. First, we ended up with an SUV so of course gas was more. Second, the car was filthy to the point we needed to clean it ourselves. Third, the car had issues to the point we thought we'll have to trade it in or fly back home from out of state. 1st off the car had tons of dings, dents and scratches a worker at Raleigh said to take a picture of them because they where not marked but she would not give us anything that allowed us to note the damage with her as a witness. We left the Raleigh nc avis car rental and with in 5 miles the maintenance required light came on, we attempted to call numerous times to the location we picked it up with no answer attempted to call the customer service main line number and could not get through or it would disconnect when it sounded like someone finally answered. At this point we resorted to email, well we do not speak other languages besides English and repeatedly got responses in another language after explaining we do not understand and requested to have it translated. Then we finally got a response in English requesting our rental information I responded same day if not with in minutes and I heard nothing more. We also put the arm rest down for our little children to use for there drinks on our way to our hotel and it loomed like someone threw up all over it as there was pink and white dried up mystery fluid all over it. They should win the Jd Power Award for customer service. They should have a much higher rating on Yelp, but I suspect people mostly only review when things go wrong, and don't give enough credit. For the I don't even know how many time they have had my back when everything has gone wrong. They worked past their own policies to make up for a mistake an auditing company made on a rental car I was renting that was hit by another driver, and got me into a car even after I was accidentally put on a Do Not Rent list. So they steered me over to the Glenwood location. We drove with the tow truck and vehicle in tow. There they tried all of my cards and for one reason or another would not except any of them. The reasons ranged from: this is not a major United States bank, to this is a debit card and cannot be used - only credit cards. Just wasted our entire afternoon over three hours Plus the hour drive to get there and the hour drive to get back.
