BUCKET LIST! 5.0…read more In my fairytale dreams, I've always wanted to take a helicopter up to a glacier and go dog sledding atop a snowy mountain. The reality of fulfilling this dream almost vanished as fog hovered too low throughout the day, resulting in tour after tour being canceled (with refunds issued). Even though our scheduled departure time of 3:30 had come and gone, there was still a glimmer of hope, although nothing was guaranteed. We were transported to the airport, about 10-15 minutes away, to await the pilots' decision on whether it was safe to proceed. I felt confident that we would get to go up and that everything would be okay, and it was! We gathered in the briefing room for a quick overview of what to expect and were issued waterproof boots to wear. This was also our last opportunity to use the restroom before heading out. The next thing I knew, we were being harnessed into our seats, with my husband and me seated up front next to the pilot. To balance the helicopter, passengers were assigned seats according to their weight. It worked out perfectly for us! The aerial views of Glacier National Park, Dawes Glacier, and the surrounding Juneau landscape were absolutely amazing. The helicopter ride itself was about 15 minutes, from takeoff to landing. As we approached Herbert Glacier and looked down at our landing site at base camp, it felt like something straight out of a movie. We were on a mission to meet those pups! The weather was cold, but we never felt a chill. As they say, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing." We were definitely prepared with our down jackets, gloves, and waterproof gear. Once at base camp, we were introduced to the mushers and their working dogs. We learned about life at base camp and how these dogs are most comfortable in temperatures at -20 degrees Fahrenheit. We then enjoyed a good 30 minutes of dog sledding, switching positions at a stop midway through the ride while our musher called out commands to the dogs. After our sledding adventure, we chatted with the mushers, petted the very excited dogs, and took in our surroundings from the mountaintop. The sheer enormity of the peaks and the abundance of snow and ice were breathtaking! When the helicopters arrived to take us back to the airport, we boarded just as we had earlier. Taking off once again was phenomenal! The entire round-trip experience lasted about two hours. There was never a boring moment as we took in the breathtaking landscape from above, imagining what it must be like to spend months at a time at base camp and go dog sledding with these amazing dogs. If you've ever dreamed of doing this, just DO IT and check it off your bucket list! A Few Things to Keep in Mind: 1) Plan your cruise early in the season. If you're hoping to book this excursion, consider traveling during the months before July. We went in mid-late June. Because of the melting snow and ice, operators generally cannot offer this experience after the end of June, although the timing may vary from year to year. Just don't cut it too close to the end of the sledding season! 2) Be prepared for weather-related cancellations. With the unpredictable weather, there is a high chance that this excursion may be canceled. These decisions are made for everyone's safety, including yours and the crew's. Fog and rain can roll in quickly, making visibility too poor for safe flying. While a cancellation may be disappointing, safety comes first. I hope you get the opportunity to experience this once-in-a-lifetime adventure! We're so glad we did!

Autumn clearly has a passion for whales and gave us enough education to fuel our fire for the animals. We saw calves and Sasha and we were treated with the experience of a whale breaching right in front of the boat! Overall a wonderful experience and looking forward to another tour with ATA! Also to mention the wonderful salmon bake! Fresh fish and live music with covered seating and a creekside view. The short hike to the waterfall was fun too! Special shout out to our wonderful bus driver too! She drives the "sunshine" bus and while her name escapes me, her impression does not! From MENDENHALL GLACIER to CRUISE port…read more Just wanted to share my story here is the pointers to get the quick over view: -Cheaper than the "bus tour" -May be cheaper than Lyft -Convenient -Courteous -Call ahead to see if they have a vehicle that fits everyone in your party -The taxi can pick you up in the parking lot nearest to the visitor center. Lyft has a designated pick up and drop off that is farther away. People the Taxi might be Cheaper!! Used the taxi from Mendenhall Glacier to our cruise. I checked on Lyft and it would have cost $78 (around 5 pm) for our party of 6. I called Juneau Taxi and the person speaking to me was kind, patient and informative. I asked if she could give me a quote for two stops and suggestions for a place to buy heels. Then I asked how long it would take for a taxi to get to us. I saw a taxi and told her I would call back if he was waiting for someone. As I was approaching his van another group came up to him. Thankfully the operator I was talking to earlier radio someone to drive over just in case. Carlita (taxi driver) was waiting for us :) as I was approaching her she asked if I was Kimberly. Just before we got into the taxi a man approached our driver and asked how much it cost to get back to the ship and she quoted give or take $45. We had 6 people in our party and we comfortably fit in to the van. He got charged $70 PER PERSON!!!! He was sitting with other people he didn't know and waiting for the bus. I forgot to pack my heels for formal night. Carlita had a suggestion to buy heels and asked over the radio where we should go. Someone over the radio suggested Alaskan Dames Consignment. Omg, this store had so many cute well taken care of items. The heels that I bought looked like it never had been worn. I had to will my self not to go crazy and only buy what I came for. This impromptu stop cost $5. In total it cost us $50. Carlita asked us if we finished shopping and suggested Alaska T-shirt's. It was a good suggestion because it was near the cruise ship and offered a variety of items. Overall it was worth it for us. This was our second time coming to Mendenhall Glacier. First time we use a bus shuttle to and back. We booked it when we got off the ship. This time we used the public bus $2 each person to get there over a mile walk from port to bus stop. When you get to the bus stop it's over a mile walk to get to the visitor center.

At first it was okay experience, we got on a school bus that brought us to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, we got only one hour to walk around, it was good but wish that we have 30 more minutes. We did see the Nugget Fall, it was amazing. Then they brought to do the Whale watching, this was amazing, we have the perfect weather. The boat that we were on was nice and clean, also it was steady that no one just seasick or anything. At a moment our boat captain did couple of faster turns, it felt great didn't even felt like anything happened. Yes we saw lots of whales and it was great to see our tour guide and captain excited with us to see the amount of whales. Also once we stopped we were able to go outside of boat to see the whale. The best part is really our Captain Austin, he was amazing. My elderly mom was not able to move that much so he make sure that we parked the boat on the side where she can watch it. Also, with his great experience he can predict around when or where the whale will come out. It was amazing. The tour group with Jake the party bus and our captain Austin, they are some of the best. Also we were cutting close to get back on the cruise, Jake dropped us off right in front of the cruise with 15 mins left to spare.

Also, while on the glacier, they let us drink the water and I was seasick during our cruise and when I drink the water I was healed. The helicopter is way better than the ones at home in India. I will definitely want to go back here again. I loved the glacier shout out to the staff, Hunter and Colin for being so hopeful to all the people that were on the glacier.

Cold rainy day but the inside seating was comfortable and the windows are perfect huge size for sightings. The naturalist guide was clearly in love with her job. She was as excited as we were at each siting. We came across a family of sea lions napping on a buoy. So cute to see the baby poke his head out from under mom. Worth the money for sure. Even though we had seen more whales off the coast of VA, these were Alaska whales!
