Bottom Line: A small Avis location with cars just a short stroll from the counter. I regularly rent through Avis so that is who I booked my car rental through when visiting Durango. Unlike much larger Avis locations, there is no electronic sign board with Avis Preferred members' names and parking spaces and there is no automation at the exit gate. Instead, here things are very nostalgic where you talk to a real human at the counter and as a bonus they print your rental agreement on a dot matrix printer! Yes, one of those printers from the 1980s that makes all of the noise and takes spools of paper with the holes along the edges. Once I had my rental agreement I think it was probably only a 25 yard walk to the car. There was only one other person in line in front of me and service was friendly and efficient . . . well other than the agent waiting for the dot matrix printer. FIRE CINNI!!! DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS! I have been coming to Durango for 20 years renting cars at the airport. But I've NEVER experienced the HORRIFIC customer service by Cinni the rep behind the counter. I rented my car for a noon pickup, but our flight got in early so I was at the counter at 11:30. I was the first in a long line, but when I got there he told me that I couldn't get the SUV I rented but they would give me a minivan instead but if I waited he might be able to get me into something else. We waited for a half an hour until the line subsided. In the meantime I made a new reservation for a standard car and canceled the SUV as I didn't want to pay for an SUV and get a minivan. When I got back up to the counter he told me that he would not rent a car to me because I switched the reservation. At this point no one had any cars left so I couldn't rent a car. I had to pay $100 to an uber driver to get to Farmington. At no point did I raise my voice or speak unkindly (though I wanted to). I was mostly in disbelief trying to figure out why he decided to treat me this way. Bottom line AVIS lost my business for good. Looking at the reviews for Avis Durango, I'm not the only one. I also think that management is part of the problem as they encouraged his behavior. HORRIBLE experience. read more

Consumer FYI... we used #AvisCarRental on our trip to Colorado. I had pre-paid for our car rental prior to the trip happening. No problems until the first car the gave us had a horrible smell, without issue, they switched it out. Second car didn't smell much better but tolerable. During our trip we decided to extend one day. However, we would need to return to car in a different city instead of the original in the pre-paid agreement. I expected a fee from this, understandable. The problem was they told us for the additional day and returning to another city that will be an additional $655.17. The original prepaid rental for 4 days was $377.83. Mind you... we wereq driving a Ford Focus. We we're in a small town and very limited on alternative options. I just tried to call Avis Customer Serivce and they said there was nothing they could do at this time since the rental contract is still open (we returned the car over 24 Hours ago). They said to give them another 36 hours. We tried to work this at the counter but the attendant there said he was limited to issuing rentals and returning them. This was our first time using Avis and very obviously our last. read more

Do not rent here. Please use Hertz or Enterprise. In Durango for work in January in the snow and was told repeatedly that the Kia Sorento he was going to put me in was an all wheel drive. I fell for his line of BS and it's was a front wheel drive. It drove like a front 2 wheel drive, and I call their crappy helpline, which did absolutely nothing, and they verified it was a 2 wheel drive. Now they are sold out and I'm SOL. read more

NEVER NEVER NEVER GO HERE. I can give you some great tips.... first of all DONT GO HERE. Terrible service, and i really think i should just copy and paste the e mail i sent to avis, to give an idea what they are like. I rented a car from avis from Durango airport. The closest gas station is 8 miles from the airport. U also charge 9.29 per pergallon to fill up the gas. I found it incredibly inconsiderate that I was not told before I picked up the car that the closest gas station is so far. I know I am not alone in this. Another avis customer had the same issue. I believe that I was purposely not told this because because the hope is that I arrive on time for my flight and realize that I am too far to go fill the car as I will miss my flight. Your staff is poorly trained and I guarantee they come across this problem everyday. I am not rushing to make my flight. This is unacceptable and I except much better from a company read more

Worst customer service ever. Our flight got cancelled and rescheduled to next day. Called Avis to let them know we would be picking up car next day due to flight change - advised we would still pay full amount even though we were getting it a day later. We were told sorry we have no cars available for you tomorrow. Tried to explain situation again. Lady just kept repeating herself "sorry we have no cars available for you" They refused to give us the car we had reserved months in advance. We called around everywhere in Durango trying to get a rental car and all were booked so Thanks to Avis we had to cancel our vacation all together because we would not have a car to get around. Horrible business! We will never use them again! read more

Family of eight going to Durango and rented large, accommodating vehicle, but upon arrival discovered that our reservation was gone. We were given a Chevy Malibu and told to come back the next morning to pick up a large Tahoe. The next morning we called which had gone unanswered and drove the thirty minutes back only to be told that all the Tahoes got rented out during the evening and we would be stuck with a small car to transport a family of eight on all our adventures. Thought done deal when left with Malibu that our Tahoe would be saved for us. We were never apologized to or given another car. read more

Worst customer service and experience! We prepaid for a car that we rented for 18 days. Unfortunately, we had to cut our trip short due to a family emergency and return the rented car 2 weeks early. We were promised a refund for the 2 weeks that we prepaid for. It has been a month a no refund yet! We have been calling their customer service and we've been told a lot of different things! Avis!
