When renting our car at the Calgary airport the gentleman at the front counter was no helpful or pleasant to deal with. It was like pulling teeth trying to get the information that was needed. Also the insurance did not make any sense but was needed especially with the rocky roads and snow storm so there was no choice in getting it. When dropping off the car we were 30 mins late because there was a winter blizzard outside we drove slower and were charged $80 for an extra hour!! Overall very poor customer service and not helpful when asking questions, I felt very ripped off and my money taken from me. Next time it will be another rental company for sure. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Our flight was delayed 5 hours so our arrival was pushed to 4:30AM. We called ahead of time to ask if we could still get our rental car when we arrived. The representative assured us that there would be someone tracking our flight and waiting for us to help us get our car. We arrive at 4:15AM, no one at the counter. Rental procedure: ok. Return: ok. Forgot my cell phone in the driver side door and didn't realize it until after going through security and customs. Shame on me, but here's where my experience became sour. When my wife tried to call the Avis desk no one would answer for a solid 8-10 minutes. When she finally talked to a representative they said they would send someone down to grab it and call us back. 45 minutes after our first call with multiple attempts to call them back we hadn't heard from anyone. A nice couple from Chicago answers the phone when I notice it moving down the highway. They tell me they will be heading to Banff and returning in 4 days. Not wanting to wait that long I give them my email to coordinate a drop-off location. The fact that Avis had about an hour retrieve my property before the next renters took the car - and didn't pull through - is lazy and unacceptable. They either flipped the car so fast that someone couldn't get to it in time or they just didn't even try to get it. Avis YYC, Avis Banff, and Avis Calgary Main Office were all ZERO help. When we could actually get through to someone they just kept pushing us off to another office or another person. NO ONE would take responsibility or help coordinate drop-off and shipment that didn't involve me waiting 4 days, coordinating shipping myself, or bothering the vacationers. I can usually handle complex coordiation problems, but this became an unnecessary headache trying to go through Avis. What should have happened after the phone was on its way to Banff is that Avis should have stepped up and said "Ok, we'll contact the current renters and ask them drop off the phone at our Banff location. We will then take care of shipping and charge your credit card on file. Thanks for choosing Avis, we appreciate the business." I reached out to the hotel the couple were staying at and asked if they could help. Their paraphrased response was, "Absolutely, just have them drop off the phone at our front desk and we'll contact you to coordinate shipping and payment." DONE. It is on it's way home now. My friends and I booked a SUV Durango for our trip to Banff and Jasper. We had done the booking since June. On 23 July, 2021 my friend called them and told them she won't be driving and she needed the name change to someone else. They refused to change any details and asked us to cancel and re-book it. We went ahead and cancelled because their policy said that the person driving should match with the credit card details. After we cancelled, we were not able to see the car on the system. We called them more than 10 times asking them to give us the same car which we just cancelled, and their response was its sold out. How the hell did the car get sold out, when it was not even on the system and we literally called just few seconds after we cancelled. Honestly, we have rented cars from AVIS for all our trips but this was the most pathetic service we received. They didn't have a proper explanation. DO NOT TRUST!!! DO NOT USE!!! GO ANYWHERE ELSE!!!! Over 400 global car hires with various companies in many countries, never had such a blatant and greed driven experience. Booked sedan, as I always do, was taking longer than usual to clear and sign over to me, as the 'attendant' changed my vehicle from sedan to compact. .... And kept the same price; thereby increasing her commision for the transaction. I was told there weren't any cars (Like the model I'd pre-booked four months in advance and walked past several of on the way to the compact (34% cheaper than what i'd booked and paid for yet still charged full amount of car I didn't have access to. Charged additional 'premium' for airport. Which I expected; as I'd already paid the 'premium' fee online. and charged for credit card processing - the only payment method their outdated site takes. The car I was (downgraded) to was apparently new, and flawless... When I eventually found it on my own; and photographed the massive dents, scratches, and dirt over it; had to go back to the 'attendant' and tell her it was not as she'd (lied) described. Her deplorable attitude and lack of skills to engage with customers went on and on until I walked away. Assumed that management would fix all these issues and poor service. In the vehicle, the evidence of appalling standards continued; with many disturbing points yet to save more of my time and your future burden if you we're planning on using this outfit; the last driver had left their contract in the car as well as receipt. .... They we're billed (From same location, and not as 'Preferred' member like I WAS) 42% less than I was. Including the overcharged amount I was slogged, yet they still got a lesser rate. With their contract are other documents that of course was "Cleaned and sanitised between clients" Yet, I have their address, flight info, contact detail, FULL CREDIT CARD INFO, and a range of other personal information because AVIS are useless at anything aside from gouging people for a quick buck. Insult to injury, I was forced to travel OS on short notice and rushed car back early. Now, ... aside from being charged $140 EXTRA for bringing their tiny car back early, i'd left Oakley sunglasses in a branded case, along with a couple of other items. ... When I noticed the missing items the following day and contacted them, told that nothing was found..... I was told they would follow up with me the following day once they'd rechecked. .... Three days later after not hearing anything, I called back and was told they had found some items but I would need to come and identify and couldn't tell me what they had... The car was with AVIS the entire time since I left it with them early, for fee, of course! Of the valued $870 USD of items that was in the car, I was 'given' a CD they'd "Found" in the car (After I was originally told there was "Nothing" in the vehicle on first search") - I got back a $8 USD disk that I brought due to the radio being 'broken', so the low skilled yet enterprising thieves at Calgary Airport AVIS made off with $862 USD of STOLEN PROPERTY, As well as the company profit and 'attendant' commision excesses of $1260 USD... Deplorable..... I have told hundreds this story and caused potential customers (Victims) to hire elsewhere. And not simply for the AVIS Calgary Airport Location, but world wide. This includes some large corporate customers and contract groups. Rented from Avis through Expedia. Was to pick up car at airport. When got there told car was off airport and that they had no shuttle to take us to the car. Took a taxi cost $30,00 cdn. At the rental office of Avis the girl stated that she was closing for the day and shoved a key over to my wife while she printed out the forms. Which she asked me to sign without explaining them to me. When I protested, she looked me in the eye and said I'm after closing time. Sign the papers or come back tomorrow morning when I'll be open again. I quickly signed and luckily my wife found the car. The agent didn't know were it was on the lot or what colour it was. It was -30C and we didn't want to come back the next morning. So I signed and we left. No inspection of the car or anything. When we returned the car at the Airport. Charged $15.00 extra for that priviledge. The supervisor after hearing our story. Admitted , that they did have a FREE Shuttle bus that we could have used. Now they refuse to refund the money we had to pay for the Taxi. I'll never us Avis again. read more

Beware of the weasel clause small print and online prepay. Was in a hurry and booked online, did not notice any rules or anything. Rented for a week, but after 2 days my plans changed so wanted to take back. Called customer service and they looked up my reservation and said just take to the same place i picked up at. 5th ave. Calgary. And likely be charged $15 early drop off fee? I thought okay, so took off couple hours of work to beat rush hour downtown. When I went there they told me rudely that I would have to keep it for 5 days more and no refunds? He didn't care what customer service told me and refused to even call them? He told me in the fine print weasel clauses it said no refunds on prepay? I never heard of this, if I had of know I would have rented otherwise. No where on the site does it warn you....except at weasel clauses at end of lengthy signup? Buyer beware. Salt in the wound for customer service to tell me they would only charge $15 for early drop off, so I drove from Deep South to downtown 5th ave and lost a couple hours of work time as well. Lots of mixed reviews here.. Going to try to clear things based on my experience here. First of all the prices they charge is overpriced but I came here cause I had a discount with my company but the discount was also available through my TD credit card, and the aeroplan miles was a plus. I booked my car well in advance, probably over a month in advance and also PAID for it in advance, there was something in the disclaimer saying if you don't pay for it there is no guarantee you will get what you booked. Now i got the the airport after my delayed flight and they told me my car was not available and gave me something else.. Though I didnt have to pay extra.. i was not happy. Now, as the rep was explaining the contract, the lady asked if i wanted them to refuel the gas tank back to the top, so i wouldnt need to return the car with a full tank. She added if you return the the car with a full tank, we will just rebate you the money. Since i didnt know the area very well and didnt know if there are any gas stations nearby, i agreed to it. After paying for a full tank of gas before returning my vehicle, they went ahead and charged me another FULL tank of gas on my credit card several days after. I call them up and they now tell me I need proof/receipt/bank statement from the gas station showing that i paid for the fill up in order to get a rebate back.. Had to go through a few phone calls to get my money back. Overall i would probably come back to this company and NOT choose their refueling option.. The car was clean the most importantly, they didn't charge me for any damages for a 7 day rental. Just as a tip, you can mark down all the damages on the car BEFORE you drive off, there are actually people there to help you mark them down so you don't end up paying for damages that are not yours. read more

One of the worst experiences I've had with rental car companies! Where do I start? Try not to rent from airport location because they charge a premium. Our rental was already "mostly" prepaid with a tour package and we had no choice with which company. If I knew this ahead of time, I would have booked my own. First of all, the lineup was really long and once we got up to the desk, we were told that it would take 15-20 minutes for our vehicle. We were offered to "upgrade" to a larger vehicle but we declined. After waiting over 40 minutes, I approached the desk to inquire about our car since we were told it would only take 15-20 minutes and we were told that it was being "cleaned". When we finally got our rental, it ended up being the larger vehicle that we had politely declined. I was going to complain but my partner just wanted to get out of there after our flight. read more

Horrible experience with Avis. We reserved a mini van at Avis through Expedia. When we were at the counter, Avis had a totally different set of interpretation on the reservation: 1. The Expedia reservation says this rental has unlimited mileage. But Avis put a 200km/day limit on it. 2. The Expedia reservation says all tax and fees are included. But Avis charged additional tax and fees anyway. 3. Avis charged $10/day for an extra driver. While we rented a car later from another rental car company, there was not such fee at all. The Avis staff was very rude and unfriendly. We could not agreed on Avis interpretation and ended up cancelled this reservation with no choice. We had to rent a car from another company in hassle. We contact Expedia later. Expedia representative confirmed that the rental had unlimited mileage and all tax and fees are included. read more

NEVER EVER EVER rent a car from them!!!!! I will make my multiple hour, horrible experience review short. They charged me $150 in fees that they never informed me of at the time of rental. They charged me an "underage" fee, even though the legal rental age is 21. My boyfriend, who is 25 was supposed to be the primary driver- but Avis told us that I had to drive because it was my credit card used for the deposit. When they told me I was to be the primary driver- they NEVER mentioned I would be charged. They set us up for this and took advantage of us! When we returned the car, we were supposed to change the credit card used to charge the rental. Of course, no one was there when we returned. We couldn't discuss our fees, or get the rental charged on the credit card we wanted. I had to make international calls back to this location from California to try to get it resolved. They didn't resolve it, they just argued with me that I "signed for the fees". Um.... when the money stealing asshole was explaining what I was signing, he said I was signing for JUST the deposit- NEVER were these ridiculous fees mentioned. MONEY WASTED! Miserable and abusive staff that has no idea what customer service means. They put my life in danger during a snowstorm in a tiny car with no snow tires in order to try to upsell me to the SUV. I arrived to pick up my car late at night during a snowstorm. Had reserved a midsized car, and was told all they had was a tiny geo Prism (economy) with no snow tires or one of many SUVs. A Geo Prism is dangerous in the snow and is NOT a midsized car. I was offered an SUV for three times the price I had reserved. I declined the SUV and reiterated that I simply wanted the midsized car that I had reserved. Was told they had no other cars. I glanced behind the counter and saw keys for a Volkswagen Golf. How about that one, I asked? It has snow tires, so we would need to charge you extra, I was told. That's not my problem, I replied. I reserved a better class of car than a tiny Geo. After 20 minutes back and forth, they gave me a NIssan Versa, tiny car with no snow tires. It was NOT a midsized car, but I was exhausted and tired of arguing. Decided I would dispute it with my credit card company later. I had to drive this piece of x#@! over several mountain passes during blizzards and nearly went over a cliff. It was terrifying. This office has a regular practice of trying to manipulate customers into upgrading to an SUV by not honoring the reserved car and by claiming to have run out of cars. It's a dishonest practice. Eight counter positions, but only two or three people working, so a 30+ minute wait to get to the counter only to be told that they don't have any cars ready, so it will be another 25 minute wait. Now if I didn't have all the extra time to kill at the airport for my red-eye flight, I would DEFINITELY have rated this as a 1 star. The entire process took running around a good hour or so regarding their mishap and another half an hour for my mishap - So this is the first time someone tried to write me for the most minuscule thing. The inspector claims there were hail dents all over the roof. Another Avis agent, a driver, checked afterwards and disagreed. After being told I'm to sign an incident report, I went in to speak with a sales representative. He himself went outside to check the car and confirmed there are no noteworthy damages. They took care of the case and told me not to worry about it. Great team, first time experiencing such chaos though. read more

We prepaid for our rental in Feb 2019 for a 6 day June trip. All was well with the vehicle. The day we returned home Avis charged our credit card an additional amount of $2,074 USD for mileage. They posted we drove over 9,000 miles! Impossible for a 6 day trip to Banff. I credit this mistake to the guy that checked the car in and whoever posted that info into their system. We actually used 794 miles out the 1,242 miles included in our contract. What a mess to fix. read more

Pretty disappointed with my experience here. First of, they didn't have the car I reserved so I upgraded for and extra $20 a day. At the desk I was told that if I returned the car empty I would only be charged $1/L by them to fill it. Upon returning it they charged me $3.20/L. Person working here was a scam artist, must get commissions on up grades. prepaid for a large SUV because there were six of us. The customer rep said our luggage wouldn't fit so suggested a larger GMC Yukon. Said it normally rents for $150 per day but I could get it for $50. Sounded great so we took the Yukon. Noticed later that my original charge and the Yukon charge were still on my visa. I called in and was apologized to and the original would be credited. Next month no credit. Called back and was told the refund was canceled because I agreed to an upgrade. ended up paying over $200 per day for a rental I was made to believe was a deal at $50. Never again read more

I rented a car from Avis earlier in the morning, and it was still dark out. I walked around the car and checked for any dents, scratches, chips in the windshield, etc. and found none. The lighting in the garage was really poor so I did the best inspection I could. I returned the car later in the day. When I returned it, they put a very bright light on the car and inspected it from every angle. The employee who inspected it said it had a dent and I was responsible for it. I disagreed with him as I made it clear the car was never parked anywhere that it could have received a dent. I explained this again to the employee at the desk. I requested that he go and inspected the dent. He did not and made up a damage report and filled it out and signed it. I did not. I was running late for my flight so I had to go. I was sent a bill for it. I know for sure I was not responsible for the dent. It was very small and the bill to repair it was $ 149.96. It was covered by my insurance. Was this a case of being scammed or not? I can't say for sure, but the way they behaved made me believe so read more

Booking a car for the first week of August 2019 at your location on 9th avenue downtown Calgary, I was told when checking in that the model I asked for was not available (booking was made two months ago).I had to choose to either downsize to a cheaper car for the same prize ($1100), or book two smaller cars for a more expensive total I would have to pay the difference!!! In the end, the girl at the counter asked me to call their location at the airport (what kind of customer relationship is that??) to check whether they have an upgrade available or not and assured me that I would not be charged the difference. They did. I drove to the airport, got the car and was charged for the full amount of the new rental ($1500 instead of $1100) saying that the discount would have to be made by the office on 9th avenue and not by the aiport's. A note was made on my reservation. Returning the car, they want to debit my credit card for the full amount ($1500), so I explain the issue again. The guy at the counter tells me that it's understood but that he will need to wait for his manager to approve the discount (more than $400!!) and that they will keep me updated about this matter by email or phone (I gave them both). Not only was I never updated about this but I was debited of the full amount ($1500) this morning August 13th 2019! Calling the 9th avenue location this morning, I kindly ask to speak to the manager as it is what it takes. The guy who answered me could not tell when he would be back to the office, or how to reach him. What kind of organisation is that ?? This is unacceptable to be that careless about your customers and saddening that it takes official social media posting and angriness instead of calm and courteous face to face talks in order to get basic services and trust restored, if it ever can. In the meantime, Budget Car Rental is right next to your location. There is no need to say that my network, every people I can speak to and I will know where to rent our car from now on. En voulant récupérer la voiture, on me dit que le modèle que j'ai demandé n'est plus disponible et que les choix suivants s'offrent à moi : rétrograder sur un modèle moins cher (tout en payant le même prix que pour le Full SUV) ou louer deux voitures, pour un total excédent le Full SUV et dont je devrai payer la différence !!! Finalement, la personne au comptoir me demande d'appeler leurs bureaux (quelle sorte de relation client est-ce là ???) à l'aéroport et que, dans l'éventualité où un modèle serait disponible, on me surclasserait sans que je ne paie la différence pour compenser le temps perdu. Ils avaient effectivement un modèle en surclassement. Je conduis donc jusqu'à l'aéroport, récupère le nouveau véhicule et l'on me dit alors que ma carte de crédit va être chargée du montant sans réduction ($1500) car le rabais devra être fait au moment de rendre le véhicule, par le bureau de la 9e avenue. Une note est faite sur mon dossier pour la traçabilité. Une fois le véhicule rendu aux bureaux de la 9e Avenue, la personne au comptoir me montre une facture pour un total de $1500. Restant calme, j'explique à nouveau le problème. Très compréhensive, cette personne m'assure que ce sera pris en charge mais qu'elle doit attendre son manager pour approuver la réduction de $400, on me tiendra au courant du déroulement de l'affaire. Je donne mon adresse email, et mon numéro de téléphone pour être joignable si besoin. Ce matin, 13 août 2019, non seulement personne ne m'a tenu au courant, mais en plus j'ai été débité du total de $1500 !! J'appelle le bureau de la 9e avenue, le manager n'est pas là et la personne au comptoir ne sait me dire ni où il est, ni quand il reviendra que ce soit aujourd'hui ou demain ! This staff here were out of this world. I had called to say that my flight might be late and Erik stayed till almost 3 am (supposed to be 2 am closing) to make sure that I was able to get my vehicle. Then he stayed till I got my luggage and did a walk-around, which was lucky since there was a chip in the windshield which we were able to put on the report. The staff there when I returned the vehicle were equally helpful. Erik also upsized my vehicle when he saw that I wouldn't be comfortable in a the compact that was reserved. Nothing but AVIS for me now! Incredible service like I have never experienced in 35 years of renting vehicles. I've never rented from AVIS before and hope to never use anything else again. Do not depend on Avis. I reserved a Chevy Suburban for pickup on December 31, 2018. When I arrived at the Avis counter there was no one there, no closed sign, no info on how to get your car. I contacted Avis and the person I talked to was very RUDE. He asked me if I knew it was New Years Eve and told me I could get my car the next morning. I told him I was staying 1-1/2 hours away and the said not my problem. If I could give them less than 1 star I would. Rent with Alamo. They saved the day and even matched the good price that I had for booking early with Avis. read more

Absolutely absurd service. Had reserved a car which wasn't available. Went to pay but didn't accept our debit card (Visa card which acts as a credit card anyway) No travel cards are credit cards! You are a rental company that doesn't make sense. We reserved this car 4 months ago because it suited and for a reasonable price. They then refused to rent to us even though we offered to pay outright or in cash. Had to go elsewhere and pay twice as much as our original rental price. Not worth the hassle to deal with them at all! They won't have the car you reserved and won't even rent to you anyway! read more

When I rented a car on May 31, I was told that I must take the fuel option (64.50+) but, if I returned it full the $64.50 would not be charged. I reconfirmed that I would not be charged if I returned the car full of gas with the 2 gentlemen who were providing service, and reluctantly agreed to accept the fuel option term. Before returning the vehicle I filled the car + added an extra litre of fuel to ensure that it would be completely full after I drove the short distance to the car return. When I returned the car, I was charged the full amount of the agreed upon rental + the fuel surcharge. I explained to the young lady that I had been told that if the car was returned full that I would not be charged for the gas option. She said that was true, and once the gas option would not be charged once the fuel level was verified. The full amount was charged to my credit card and I have not received a refund. I have tried to call Avis at YYC but cannot get through location. I also contacted head office, but have not received a reply. read more

Deceitful! We prepaid for a fullsize vehicle with zero excess complete cover. Erik at Avis firstly tried to manipulate us into paying for an SUV upgrade insisting that it was flooding in the Rockies (untrue!); then when we didnt bite he said he only had a rear wheel drive Dodge left. He even made a show of calling "his guys" up to confirm this. We insisted on waiting for a front drive vehicle ( pickup early afternoon and we weren't in a rush). He came back less than a min later to say he had a VW Passat. Deceitful. He then tried to sell us more insurance and roadside assistance. Rented a car from one location to be returned to another, was under the impression that I had the car for 24 hours and it was not communicated to me that I had to have the car back before the office closed/by a certain time. Tried to verbally confirm that I had the rental for 24 hours with the Avis representative and he confirmed/did not correct me (that the vehicle should be returned by a certain time) Charged me hundreds of dollars more than needed to be charged because I returned the vehicle "late". They exploited me by charging me an HOURLY CHARGE OVERNIGHT! So between the hours of midnight and 8am I was being charged 22+$ an hour!! They refused to give me a refund or any sort of Avis credit. WILL NEVER RENT FROM THEM AGAIN, I suggest HERTZ for future rentals. read more

We had a pre-booked and paid car hire package arranged through Canadian Affair (in the UK), this package allowed up to 4 drivers to be picked up at Calgary Airport. On pickup we wanted two drivers able to drive, licences were presented to reception. We wanted to add tyre protection and were quoted C$173 for this extra which we agreed. We were also given a free upgrade - great we thought. Given a package of paper and the keys. On arriving at our first location (around an hours drive) found only one of us was listed as the driver - rang the help number in the paperwork to try to resolve it - absolutely no help at all. Asked to speak to someone more senior - same result no help, told to ring Calgary (on the same number - when told them this is the number we had rang on were given another number, this was for Budget rentacar not AVIS). At this point rang Canadian Affair in UK - they emailed back within 2 hours and stated we were covered for the two drivers and confirmed the charge for the additional tyre cover. Still a little concerned as we had no real paperwork. By chance we spotted an AVIS dealer in Banff who confirmed that it was a legal requirement to have AVIS paperwork in both names for both of us to drive. Helpfully the Banff staff sorted this out. However, on returning the car at the end of our holiday to Calgary we were charged C$253 not the C$173 quoted for the additional tyre cover. On asking for an explanation (expecting to pay some tax but not nearly 50%) we were unable to get any explanation at Calgary so had to pay. On return to UK we received a formal invoice for the C$253 - again a number of in-explicable items present. emailed AVIS asking for a detailed breakdown, their acknowledgement stated a reply within 15 days - to date after 19 days no reply. At the same time copied my email to Canadian Affair who followed it up with AVIS - the response they had still failed to provide any real explanation. My conclusion - AVOID AVIS AT ALL COSTS. read more

Bad customer service, lazy staff... Did not explain rental agreement properly. Go rent somewhere else!

Horrible! They take advantage of unforeseen circumstances. On our travels back to the Calgary Airport last week there was a major collision on the highway bringing traffic to a complete standstill. I called ahead to Avis to let them know we were running late and therefore unable to refuel our rental vehicle. I was assured Avis was aware of the accident and refuelling would not be an issue. Sure, no issue at $3.80 per litre. We dropped our rental and ran across to check in where we were informed that we made the check in with three minutes to spare. Avis charged $289.18 to refuel my rental (fuel cost was $0.94/litre at the time) What other choice did we have at time? Refuel our rental or miss our flight.... They take advantage, this fuel charge was more than the standard rental charge for the week. I spoke with Avis head office and the gracious offered to adjust the fuel cost to $2.80/litre. NEVER rent from this company! Arrived in Calgary at 2 pm - went to the Avis rental car agent and was told that I would have to wait 45 minutes for my car along with the 50+ other angry people waiting. The agent was 'matter of fact' attitude, no apologies, no compensation for my wasted time! An hour and 35 minutes later I was given the keys - again no apologies - nothing! This will be a lesson learned for me - don't make the same mistake I did. read more

Horrible company. Book a car online for spouse's trip, quote was $112.60. They added a bunch of declined coverage, did not discuss with my lady when she picked car up, total bill $265.51. Additional coverages were never discussed, just asked to "sign here". My lady was very distraught as she was visiting a sick grandchild, so I had never discussed cost of rental previous, but I did mention we were not accepting collision coverage($90 plus tax, was never discussed with her). After the fact when I called to discuss bill, I was told "well, she signed it, too bad, bill stands". Was fairly obvious they get calls like this often as he had his response pretty well rehearsed.
