I've had bad experiences with this company but United mileage plus program continues to promote them and since it had been 3 years I decided to try them again. Huge mistake. I brought my 85 year old mum to Calgary for my niece's wedding. We're supposed to be celebrating with family-instead I have spent 2 hours standing in line, and probably have another hour to go. It's unbelievable. No other car rental company in the airport even has a line. Avis might be the most incompetent company I've ever dealt with. I will never deal with them again. Wow. I'm a Preferred member. Rented a BMW X1. It came with features DISABLED, including navigation! So I had to use Andriod Auto the entire time. Didn't get what I paid for. Then, they charged me for a full tank of gas when I had returned it FULL. These people don't deserve single star. They deserve a poop emoji. read more

Why 4 stars? Because the whole experience was pretty convenient for us. --- --- --- I normally don't write reviews for rental car companies, but I noticed the sub 2-star rating for Avis and wanted to chime in. We had a totally fine experience here. We waited a bit longer than anticipated when we arrived to grab the car, only because my wife has Avis status and assumed we would just walk straight to our car like she has at other locations. That was not the case, and we actually had to wait in the Preferred line behind someone who the staff was dealing with for about 10-15 minutes. The only other thing I can think of is that I wish we had been given an option to choose between different vehicles, but we were just handed keys to a Dodge Durango. It got the job done though. And drop-off was "done" before we could even grab our bags out of the car. I actually laughed when the associate told us we were good to go. I'm not sure if we just caught them on a good couple of days or if most of the negative reviews are really old, but our Avis experience was perfectly fine here. read more

Scam artists with additional random fees they dont tell you beforehand (see the concession recovery fee). Also forced upgrades to vehicles that use higher MPG because they're garbage at planning vehicle reservations. I wanted a small vehicle bc I'd be on the highway a lot and was given... a pick up truck! what a great upgrade right? Also, don't believe their lies in their fuel service option saying we'd get a better rate than local rates per our corporate discount, even though it's written no where. Wow, what horrible customer service. The agent who helped receive the car when we returned it was extremely rude. Without checking what we had arranged, proceeded to treat us as if we 1. Damaged the car 2. Drove beyond the mileage limit 3. Neglected to fill the tank 1) We took photos and video of the rental prior to driving it off the lot so we showed the guy that the damage was there to begin with. It was also in the app. 2) The guy didn't realize we had no mileage limit before giving us grief about it 3) We prepaid for fuel so we didn't need to fill the tank, but he gave us grief about that too. Get preferred. It will get you through the line quicker. I think if you book through their app and not some discount broker everything goes smoother. No extra surprises on the cost. Shorter lines. Etc. The car I got was admittedly very dirty. I don't know why. But it functioned fine. There's no gate attendant to go over the damages to your car before you drive out. You can just drive right out. No gate. But there are attendants walking around. I gave the pre-existing damage markup to them. Checkin was smooth. I filled up close to the airport. And I didn't get hit with any bogus charges when I gave it to them. So overall, I get that it's not the best Avis I've been to, but it was acceptable. read more

This rental was terrible. I've rented from Calgary over Christmas for almost a Decade. I'm moving onto Hertz. Rented one of the top car lines rental. Driver side door handle was frozen when I rented it. Went back into office. They acted annoyed I had this problem. I mean I can't open the door this could be an inconvenience during my trip. Some worker came up and said "I fixed it". So the office staff was like problem solved. Okay went back to the car it did work. Then later in the night. Stuck again. Almost the whole trip I had to crawl through the passenger side. The rental company did a terrible job getting this car ready. No one cares here. They didn't even inspect the car. Then returning it. They nickel and dimed me. i filled up with gas. Oh no it's only 7/8th full. Oh there is a ding on the windshield. Now they want to inspect the car. No one inspected prior. I also have status at Hertz like Avis. After this experience I'm done with Avis. I don't like to feel taken advantage of. So Sorry Next Time your company won't have to worry about customers that are busy bothering the staff about doors. I had a horrible experience with Avis to start off my family vacation in Calgary. I prepaid for my rental ahead of time, at least three weeks before my trip. I purposely did this to save money on the rental and to guarantee I would have a minivan available upon my arrival. When I arrived at the counter, there was a long line of customers. Apparently, it didn't matter if reserved and paid beforehand, they made you wait in the same line. After 25 minutes, I was called next to talk to the agent. The agent fumbled around with my paperwork and disappeared in to the back room for about 15 minutes and left me standing at the counter. She returned, only to connect with someone on the phone for another 10 minutes. I knew what was happening before she returned to me. And she confirmed what I knew- the minivan I reserved was not available and another one would not be available for at least another 30 minutes. I asked how this could be when I reserved it three weeks ago and I prepaid in advance and the only response I received from her was, "These things happen." What an asinine response! I could not wait that long because I had two seniors traveling with me and an appointment I was already 10 minutes late for. I asked if they could give me an equivalent car and I specially asked for a car that would fit 6 to 7 people. She said she would arrange that. She takes another 15 minutes to process the paperwork and hands me keys to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We walk all the way to the where the cars are parked, seniors with mobility concerns and all the luggage in tow, locate the car I was assigned, only to find it was a 5-seater car. I thought there was an extra third row but NOPE, none. This car was NOT comparable to a car I originally reserved. I had to tread back to the counter to swap for another car. When I arrived back, I had to wait another 20 minutes to be helped. I explained to the same agent who assisted me the first time and she kept telling me she personally checked the car to ensure it was a 6-7 person seater. We went back and forth, me telling her that is not the case. She finally decided to look into what she had available to exchange and gave me another Jeep Grande Cherokee. I asked her again to make sure it was a 6-7 seater because I was not going to drag my senior family members around any more. She writes the parking space of the vehicle down on the paperwork and I take that paperwork into the garage. I asked the attendants there where the parking space was and they instructed me to far side of the garage. Senior and luggage in tow again, we make our way down there, only to find a DIFFERENT car parked in that space. Keys and car did not match. Absolutely frustrated at this point, I didn't want to drag the seniors and luggage around the garage looking for the car. I went to ask the same garage attendant to help me locate the car. We went up and down all the lanes hoping to hear the sounds of the car alarm unlocking and looking for the matching plates. After about 10 mins, we locate the car, definitely parked in a different spot than was told to me. Worst car rental experience I've ever dealt with. No sympathy or apologies from the agent or her manager. I definitely recommend you do business with the other car rental companies at the airport. read more

If you love wasting time on your hard earned vacation, this is the place to be! I arrived to the Avis line around 12pm to be met by a huge line only in Avis with no line for Enterprise or Hertz. After 27 minutes (and counting) of waiting in line, I was informed I can go to the Avis preferred member line in the garage if I was a member. I left my place in line to walk over. I waited 5 minutes to have the woman say she can't check me out because I booked the reservation through Expedia and not Avis preferred. I walked back to the regular line to find it even longer. I waited 51 minutes (and counting) to then talk to a representative. The guy was nice so I will give the company that. After 10 minutes I got the keys to my car. Walk over to the garage and find it's not even the car I booked... I booked a Nissan Altima and received a Hyundai Venue. Luckily no issues with the car, dropped it off and will never use Avis again. I've informed every family member and friend I could to choose a different car rental company. I wish I was able to get a refund and book elsewhere... P.S. don't use the gas "savings" pitch they have. I fell for it thinking I was saving money. Paying for their tank of gas was $.34 more expensive per gallon than any gas station I saw. Avis scammed me out of almost $500 in additional fee (accident coverage and gas fee) i did not consent to. Sandeep was the attendant and I believe added accident coverage without my knowledge, there was no discussion, and i had previously declined it on multiple occasions. I also brought the car back with a full tank of gas and customer service has not been helpful. I will never rent from Avis again and notice now all of the bad reviews and class action lawsuits against Avis. I will never give them business again. My wife and I grew up in Calgary and Patrick is the exact kind of person that we miss while we're away from home, I strongly recommend that a hire more people like him. I had a very bad experience with Avis at Calgary Airport, I wanted a nice full size car , paid full price for a top of the line vehicle, that is not what I got at all , i got a Chrysler 300 which should be good, except it had over 84000 k on it, still had road salt stains on rear window, old technology. not even car play on it , far from being a nice car, I bought insurance for my four day rental which I never do as I have insurance , but this time i did for four day my bill came to over $800. On returning the vehicle the attendant walk up to the right hand side of the windshield lift the wiper blade and said how did this happen , there was a chip hiding under the blade, funny he went to that first on his inspection like he knew already, I didn't drive the car much at all just local driving in Calgary, I told him I knew nothing of that and didn't care as i had full insurance, and the car was miled out anyways so deal with it, and to mark it down as damage, they never did put a claim in for the windshield , I suspect other drivers have paid for it more than once, Never expected to be treated so poorly, or charged so much for a old vehicle , and accused of damaging it. The lineup was decent for the airport. Pleasant employee told us that we should have gone to the preferred line. My husband had a corporate discount and we ended up getting a free upgrade too! So we ended up getting a terrific deal into the same SUV that my husband drives at home - making it easier for him to drive in a strange place. Lines will vary as it is an airport. Availability if cars may be affected by others returning the vehicles later than intended. We had good luck this day. read more

First time here in Calgary with my Family, and I booked my reservation over a month ahead so we can drive to Banff. Checking out was not a problem as a preferred customer, but they gave me a car that has stone bruise cracked on the windshield. I was very worried so I asked to get it replace. The employees at the garage was rude and directed me back inside for replacement. Talked to the manager and he basically told me that it is marked and I'm not going to get charge and it's safe to drive. He also said that they don't have any available car left. Breaking my experience into good and bad side: Good side: Very pleasant experience of checking in as it wasn't crowded and the car collection is awesome. I did see lot of standard suvs with M+S tires in the lot. Bad Side: It is your job to communicate that $25 is the surcharge for winter tires. I knew it back off my mind by reading a prior review here but the agent never told me that it's $25 a day. The rental agreement doesn't even mention it as snow tire surcharge so it's very easy to miss that by any customer. Please Work on that to boost your rating. It is extremely difficult to extend rental here. I was given a direct line as well and no one picks up the call. I tried 7-8 times at different time of the day on multiple days. Further, budget Canada customer care doesn't even recognize this location and cannot extend the rental for you. read more

I have never had such a horrible car rental experience in my life. We turned the car in with damage--which is our fault, obviously. We were told to wait to hear from them and that they would contact our insurance. They never contacted insurance, never sent me any notification, and charged my credit card nearly $8,000 for repairs. Then, when I was trying to get reimbursement from my insurance, it took about 6 months to get all the documentation I needed from them. They would not answer or return phone calls or emails for weeks at a time. They continued to claim they could not provide certain documents that insurance said were standard and required for reimbursement. I did eventually get it, but in the meantime, I was out thousands of dollars for about 6 months and called and emailed them over and over that entire time. NEVER use AVIS. read more

The staff was very accommodating at the desk however their system goes down monthly and when it does you must wait for them to call in your cc details so that it can be authorized. Filled out all the paperwork online and couple of days ago so I could grab the keys and go but HEAD OFFICE MAKES THAT IMPOSSIBLE. Never use this company or location!! It took an hour to get a car & the customer service was awful. There was a very tiny chip in the windshield when we got the car, but when we returned it they tried to blame it on us. We disputed it, so they said they would be able to go back & see that it was already there, so there shouldn't be any problems. Almost 3 months later we got a bill saying we have to pay for a new windshield. This is clearly a scam for people not from their country. Lesson learned, we will always take a full video of any future car rental locations. We travel often & have never run into any problems like this. Avis has lost our trust forever!! read more

After reading the reviews on Avis Calgary Airport car rental, there seems to be a trend and I'm wondering if it is racially motivated but for sure this place is looking to scam people. My husband used his corporate company family and friends discount code to prepay and reserve our rental car. A benefit that his company specifically expressed can be used between employee, spouses, family, and friends. We were actually able to get our rental for a lot cheaper than Costco travels. When we went to check-in, the lady didn't greet us or anything, she just looked at the reservation and asked which one of us was the employee. My husband immediately responded and she went on to ask for proof of his employment. The thing was, he works for a company that handles government contracts so he cannot access his work email or portals outside of the company. They insisted that they have to verify all employees and kept asking us to prove his employment or else they will rescind the discount and charge us full price. After explaining this to several employees and finally the manager, we were able to move on from it and the manager just gave in. There was really just an issue with one lady (so mad that I didn't get her name) but she kept giving us a hard time even after her manager approved the usage of our code. The thing is, we did the same thing in Vancouver and they didn't even question us and we've used this code before and never was questioned. But this lady was interrogating us like we stole something when it was just a corporate code discount that my husband rightfully used. read more
